Session Abstract

At the intersection of sustainable development research, practice and policy

guidance, Type II Social LCA offers us a new tool for anticipating and

assessing impacts in complex, developing country contexts that are

notoriously difficult to evaluate with econometric methodologies alone. In

this session, a small panel will present case studies in which Type II S-LCA

was/is being adapted in the Global South, across sectors and at local,

regional and/or national levels. Following from the panel presentations,

attendees will participate in structured group breakout discussions to explore

the opportunities and challenges to using Type II S-LCA in sustainable

development research and practice, unpack ways to adapt the methodology,

discuss how to handle data limitations, and address other issues relevant to

applying Type II S-LCA in this uniquely high-impact context. The session will

be closed with feedback from the breakout groups and suggestions for future

R4D activities.
