Session Abstract

How to assess the social sustainability of products and materials? Fortunately, by addressing the complete supply chain and considering all relevant life cycle stages. Social life cycle assessment (S-LCA) strives to give a holistic picture of the social impacts occurring along a products life cycle. It, however, deals with challenges of data availability and uncertainty as well yet uncovered aspects in the social sustainability context.

In parallel, we have assessment methods with different scopes (e.g. due diligence assessments) or focusing on specific life cycle stages (e.g. conflict minerals assessments). Especially for the latter the interlinkages with S LCA appear to be very relevant in the context of comprehensive supply chain assessments and for considering the goal of conflict free products.

In S-LCA the far upstream end of supply chains is often a phase with high uncertainties. Thus, a combination of findings from conflict minerals assessment may enrich the S-LCA practice and significantly reduce the results uncertainty, e.g. also related to changes in material origin or illegal sources of materials . On the other hand, the conflict mineral assessment practice may benefit from the broader indicator framework used within S-LCA, e.g. to also include new categories such as indigenous rights etc.
