Session Abstract

To deal with the biodiversity crisis we need to find a way to give nature more space. But how can we do this in a way that honors both the needs of other species and humans at the same time? Some leading conservationists propose to save other species we need to give 50% of the Earth back to nature. Critiques say the grand plan would be unfair to local peoples, and poor landowners. The challenges of a global conservation plan go well beyond anything we have considered as a global land community in the past. If we are to discuss the possibility of Half-Earth we need to do it in a way that is rigorous, and fair. And we need to acknowledge the multitude of different perspectives.

Join us for a roundtable discussion with people mobilizing Half Earth, alongside experts from the GLP community in land use, biodiversity mapping, conservation, multifunctional landscapes, agriculture, ethics, sociology, and land tenure. We will ask the expert panel hard questions on the challenges, opportunities, trade-offs, of giving half the planet back to nature, with the aim of navigating the gap between “visions for the planetary land system”, and “what people want from the land”.
