Session Abstract

Building on the success of the Science-Based Targets Initiative for climate - which has over 500 companies setting targets in line with 2-degree pathways, the Science-Based Targets Network is developing voluntary targets for Land, Freshwater, Oceans and Biodiversity. These efforts aim to motivate leadership companies on these issues and put their corporate goals in line with international policy conventions (e.g., UNFCCC, CBD, SDGs, UNCCD).

We propose to develop the context-based land targets in three stages:

1. Zero Conversion of Natural Habitat - building on the zero-deforestation agenda under the UN New York Declaration on Forests and Consumer Goods Forum.

2. Zero Degradation - aligning with the land degradation neutrality targets under UNCCD

3. Regional Targets based on maintaining or restoring ecological function

In this session, the SBTN Land group will provide an overview of the proposed approach, share insights on corporate target setting and supply chain accounting and identify specific needs for science and tool development to support of these efforts. After this context is presented, we would like to hear from this expert research community on existing or developing research and ideas that could support the development of SBTs for Land.

Table discussions focused on the five areas outlined will be organized (contingent upon participation): 3 Groups: For Conversion, Degradation & Ecological Function; Translational Science Group; Out of the Box Group.

If successful, this session could potentially lead to additional workshops to embed research from the GLP in to SBTN Land intervention design and implementation.
