Waste and its management are common aspects considered across industries, however, the waste management sector as a whole is less prominently discussed. Particularly food waste is currently discussed in many fora and central to national, European (EU action plan for the circular economy) and international initiatives (U.N. Sustainable Development Goal 12).
This session is focused on food waste and aims at exploring the role the waste management sector plays as industry and society moves towards a circular economy model. Case studies and research pieces as well as expert views and predictions/prognoses are welcome.
The term waste management sector is used here is the loosest possible way, including companies dealing with prevention, re-use, valorisation, treatment and disposal as well as companies that use secondary material as a resources.
Some potential questions to explore are:
The future of food waste management sector – what will its role be in a circular economy?
Is the food waste management sector sufficiently integrated and involved (as equal partner) in value chain considerations?
How does the food waste management sector interact with other industries?
Is there an ideal circular economy model for food waste?
What is needed to move food waste management to a circular economy model e.g. policies, regulation, communication, or other instruments?
Will the interactions between stakeholders along the value chain have to change?
What are the synergies and trade-offs with social and economic dimensions?
How well do supply and demand in food waste align?
What is the role of the consumers in food waste management?
