Young People’s diverse Perceptions of Alpine Landscapes and Nature's Values Universität Innsbruck, Österreich Zusammenfassung Alpine landscapes are rapidly transforming due to climate change and human pressures, affecting biodiversity and community well-being. These shifts highlight the need for transformative change that includes diverse perspectives and values of nature. Yet young people remain underrepresented in research on nature value perceptions, especially in Alpine environments. This study uses the Nature Futures Framework to examine how young people (n = 68, aged 14–16) perceive and value Alpine nature in the Gaisberg Valley, Austria. We analyzed more than 450 short narratives and visualized their intrinsic, relational, and instrumental values. The results show that young people mainly emphasize intrinsic values (e.g., glaciers, landforms) and relational values (e.g., memories, personal connections), while instrumental values (e.g., water provision, energy production) appear less frequently. This indicates strong appreciation of natural features and personal connections but limited awareness of broader ecological and societal functions. The findings underline the need to strengthen knowledge of instrumental and relational dimensions through, e.g., environmental education, participatory activities, and nature-based experiences, supporting sustainability and nature connectedness, and environmental awareness in mountain regions. 14:00 - 14:15
«Form-follows-Relations!» 14:30 - 14:45
Perception of landscape changes by local population in Minusio (TI) 1: Institue of Geography and Sustainability and Interdisciplinary Centre for Mountain Research, University of Lausanne; 2: Department of Geography, University of Zurich; 3: Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development , ETH Zurich; 4: Stiftung Landschaftsschutz Schweiz; 5: Steiger texte konzepte beratung Zusammenfassung Fostered by social and economic globalization, standardised urban and infrastructural development is dissolving the character of landscapes with their Baukultur qualities (Grêt-Regamey and Galleguillos-Torres 2022), eventually leading to a loss of sense of place and place attachment (Jorgensen and Stedman 2001). Questions therefore arise concerning the perception of landscape changes: How do local stakeholders and residents perceive landscape quality and its evolution over time? What are the consequences of landscape changes on place attachment and active engagement with the place? Based on empirical work in Minusio, along the Laggo Maggiore (Ticino), we propose a comparison between the “objective” changes of the landscape and their perception by local residents. We documented the changes over the last 80 years using a cartographic approach and conducted transect walks to assess the perception across space and time. This research is part of the project Qualiscapes - Assessing tipping points in Baukultur qualities of the NRP 81 “Baukultur”. References: Grêt-Regamey A., Galleguillos-Torres M.
