Biography
Peter Magni is a researcher at the South African City Network. His researched is focused on urban land, spatial planning and land use management and public infrastructure. He has over ten years’ experience in local and national government.

Sophie’s academic background include a BSc in Sociology and African Studies, and MSc in Town and Regional Planning with a focus inclusive housing and urban regeneration initiatives in inner-city Johannesburg. Sophie first came to Durban on a Rotary International Scholarship and has since been working in Durban on issues around low-income housing, enterprise development and inclusiveness.

Big Data Approaches to Market Analysis: SE Asian Palm Oil

Biography
Gabriel Thoumi, CFA, FRM is a Senior Fellow at Climate Advisers where he provides global financial analysis for mitigating systemic climate risk while advising on “greening” capital markets for clients and coalitions.

He has 15 years of experience managing and deploying frameworks to improve global capital markets sustainability through risk mitigation and return enhancement. Previously, for Calvert Investment Management, he valued global equity, index, and fixed income portfolios and their component positions in the utilities, energy, materials, chemicals, and financial sectors. He worked on quantitative index construction and asset allocation strategies. He engaged Fortune 500 CEOs on approaches to mitigating climate risk using financial risk management tools. He led initiatives to improve financial accounting of exchange-listed products and incorporated natural capital into financial tools. He wrote the winning Agriculture Supply Chain Adaptation Facility for the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance.

His research on capital markets has been cited by Forbes Magazine and the Guardian as key reasons why markets can improve our societies’ collective ability to mitigate climate change. He has co-authored numerous papers including a recent paper in Science on standardizing payments for ecosystem services.

Formerly, for the U.S. Government, as Senior Director Finance and Carbon Markets, he led a team publishing confidential analysis on Latin American REDD+ financial readiness. At Morgan Stanley’s climate change mitigation company, he conducted due diligence on derivatives and financed infrastructure projects. At Wells Fargo, he managed $4 billion daily in commercial bank lending and priced financial risks for over 2,000 financial counterparties while managing a $16 billion fixed income portfolio to protect public deposit accounts, and he sold financial products while supporting fixed income trading.

He has an MBA and MSc from the University of Michigan where he was a Consortium and Erb Institute fellow. He is a frequent speaker, author, and lecturer for various universities. He also is a Certified Ecologist by the Ecological Society of America and LEED AP (BD+C) and LEED AP (O+M).

Biography
Nick Hubing has more than 20 years’ experience working in the geospatial technology field. He has served as the President of LAND INFO Worldwide Mapping since 2004. Under his leadership, the company has developed one of the world’s largest commercial digital map archives, become widely recognized in the area of remote sensing, and achieved 12 years of consecutive growth and profitability. Mr. Hubing has been heavily involved within the commercial high-resolution satellite imaging industry since its inauguration with the launch of IKONOS in 1999; he has helped pioneer new satellite imagery applications for NGOs, government agencies, utilities and environmental organizations. Mr. Hubing is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Economics, International Relations and Latin American Studies.

Arnulf Christl is a geospatial systems architect and provides consultancy for clients throughout the world such as the United Nations, Ordnance Survey Great Britain, Siemens and IBM. Arnulf provides consultancy for geospatial systems through his company Metaspatial. He has a thorough background in secure and quality assured Open Source products based on Open Standards and is knowledgeable in Open Data models. Arnulf is President Emeritus of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) and a member of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Architecture Board. He is also founding member of the OSGeo initiative GeoForAll and sits on the advisory board of the GLTN project Social Tenure Domain Model (STDM).

Peter Baumann is Professor at Jacobs University [1] and hitech founder and CEO. With his research on flexible, scalable multi-dimensional Big Datacubes he has coined the research field of Array Databases [2] and is Principal Architect of the worldwide first complete and operational Array DBMS, rasdaman [3].

Peter Baumann has authored and co-authored 120+ book chapters and papers on raster databases and related fields, and holds international patents on array databases. He is regularly invited to program committees of Big Data related conferences, and is on the board of several journals.

In RDA he is co-chairing the Big Data, Geospatial, and Array Database groups; in OGC he is co-chairing the Big Data, Coverages, and WCS group. Based on his 20 years of experience he is actively shaping Big Data standards, such as the OGC Big Geo Data suite, WCS, suite and ISO Array SQL. In recognition of his entrepreneurial work in the field he has received a series of national and international innovation awards, such as the renowned OGC Kenneth Gardels Award.

He is co-founder of the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, co-founder of Map Kibera and GroundTruth Initiative and founding member of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. He holds a master’s degree in Evolutionary and Adaptive Systems from the University of Sussex, and bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from UC Santa Cruz.
