Alan McKinnon is Professor of Logistics in the Kuehne Logistics University, Hamburg and Emeritus Professor at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. He has been researching and teaching logistics since the late 1970s and published extensively in journals, books and reports on many different aspects of the subject. He has held visiting professorships at universities in the UK, Sweden, China, Malaysia and South Africa. He has advised several governments, parliamentary committees and international organizations, including the World Bank, International Transport Forum and European Commission. He was chair of the World Economic Forum’s Logistics and Supply Chain Council and the Transport Advisory Group of the EU’s Horizon 2020 research programme. Much of his research over the past 20 years has focused on the environmental sustainability of logistical activities, particularly their decarbonization. He was a lead author of the transport chapter in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 5th Assessment report, has published a book on Decarbonizing Logistics (2018) and recently wrote a report for the World Bank on logistics decarbonization in lower income countries.

From 2008 to 2011, he held the position of Global Key-Account Director at Nestlé.
Before his tenure at Nestlé, Timothy was a Member of the Board of Directors at Markenverband, the German Branded Goods Association. His earlier career included a role as the Head of the Environmental Department at Handelsverband Deutschland (HDE), the Federal German Retail Association.
