Session Abstract

BACKROUND

Schools suffer from poor indoor air quality (IAQ), impairing children’s learning ability and health. Literature claims an urgent need to implement mitigation strategies to reduce indoor air pollution (IAP) in schools. Recent studies propose actions using emerging low-cost technologies (low-cost sensors, portable air cleaners). Nevertheless, there is no universal methodology to quantify the impacts of the application of mitigation strategies to reduce IAP in schools, literature is scarce and scattered, and some questions remain. Which low-cost solutions can be implemented? What are the challenges of their implementation? What can be the role of children/staff? How can we quantify the impacts of those solutions in IAQ and health burden?

AIMS AND SCOPE

Organised by the SENSINAIR project team (https://sensinair.fe.up.pt/), this workshop intends to contribute for the development of a methodology to quantify the real impacts of IAP mitigation solutions in schools. Participants will: i) learn state-of-the-art low-cost mitigation solutions; and ii) discuss and contribute for a methodology for quantifying the impacts in terms of IAQ and health benefits. Learning from world-renowned experts and from the experience of SENSINAIR project, participants will also have the opportunity to share their own experience.
