Globally concerns for first the digital divide and then the grey digital divide have been expressed over several decades. Rapid technological development and in particular the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), artificial intelligence (AI) and Society 5.0 is increasing concerns for older generations to fall behind in all contexts of life involving the use of technology ranging from mobile phones, digital information access and social media. The grey digital divide represents elderly people at retirement age and even younger (50+) who have access to technology but who struggle to master all the knowledge and skill sets to effectively benefit from digital opportunities. This panel will discuss the phenomena of the grey digital divide, reasons and urgency for concern (illustrated with examples from various contexts), types of divides, intergenerational approaches as solutions (scope, applications, examples), mutual benefits with intergenerational research, learning and support, and initiatives applicable in different contexts.
