Gender inequality in the information technology (IT) industry varies geographically, especially between the Global North and South. While cultural biases, school prejudices, and workplace norms contribute to gender disparities in the North, the South faces limitations in education, socioeconomics, and deeply ingrained gender roles. These disparities, influenced by socio-cultural and economic factors, demand tailored solutions. Achieving global gender equality in IT necessitates an understanding of these nuanced distinctions. This panel offers an overview of IT gender disparity and explores key themes: the perspectives of developed nations in the Northern Hemisphere and developing nations in the Global South, the challenges women in the South encounter in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education and IT opportunities, the gender divide in digital publishing (in production and consumption), and the impact of government policies and educational initiatives in the North on promoting gender equality in IT.
