W 01: Workshop: Delivering an Entire Course Through Remote Experiments - An Exemplary Introductory Course on Electric and Electronic Circuits Location: U05-215 The aim of this workshop is to give participants insight into how to design an entire course on a specific engineering field using remote experiments and an enquiry-based teaching and learning approach as the two major instructional strategies. A practical example in the specific area of electric and electronic circuits supports the workshop, together with the newly launched VISIR handbook. VISIR stands for Virtual Instrumentation Systems in Reality, a remote laboratory originally designed by Ingvar Gustavsson† that enables doing (real) experiments with electrical and electronic circuits. Attendees should bring a tablet, notebook, or laptop. |
W 03: Workshop: Hacking a Hackathon Location: Room U04-103 The "Hacking a Hackathon" workshop at ICL2024 aims to harness the transformative potential of international EdTech hackathons in digital education. Over 1.5 hours, participants will exchange best practices, develop high-quality hackathon strategies, and explore their role as a challenge-based learning format amid rising AI use in education. Targeting educators, administrators, EdTech innovators, and policymakers, the workshop requires no specific prerequisites and will host up to 50 participants. The session includes a 15-minute mini-lecture, 30 minutes of group work, 15-minute presentations, and a 30-minute moderated discussion to foster interactive learning and experience sharing. Expert Janika Leoste will lead the workshop in-person, bringing extensive experience in educational robotics and online learning. Join us to discover how EdTech hackathons can drive innovation, collaboration, and educational excellence across Europe. |
W 08: Workshop: KICK 4.0 – AI Chatting Skills in the Engineering Laboratory Location: Room U06-401 The workshop aims to explore and discuss the connection of two current educational developments: the rise of cross-reality labs in engineering education and the pedagogical challenges, opportunities and limitations of extending students' lab work with generative AI like ChatGPT. While cross-reality labs can promote collaborative, self-directed, and agile learning when well developed, the main novel challenge here is how laboratory instruction can be redesigned in such a way that it still enables deep learning despite the use of generative AI as an assistance system to efficiently complete lab tasks. The workshop aims to clarify this pedagogical challenge and outline initial solutions. |

W 07: Workshop: Synergising Problem and Project Based Learning and Design Thinking Location: Room U01-202 Independent pedagogical practices over a period reach their saturation points and start providing diminishing returns due to zealous implementation, verbatim interpretation, unknown blind spots, and similar limitations. One of the pragmatic approaches is to appropriately synergise such pedagogical practices. This Tutorial/Workshop highlights the benefits of synergising three widely practiced independent pedagogical approaches; Problem Based Learning (PBL), Project-Based Learning (PBL), and Design Thinking (DT). How to utilise the strengths of each of these pedagogical practices for optimizing teaching & learning resources is the theme of the proposed Workshop. Key challenges and implementation strategies with case studies will also be deliberated. A sample template on Synergising Problem & Project Based Learning (P2BL) & Design Thinking (DT) will be discussed with the participants |

W 04: Workshop: Sociogamify Workshop: Boosting User Engagement in Industrial Applications through Social Networking and Gamification Location: Room U04-103 This workshop will equip researchers, developers, and industry professionals with innovative strategies to boost user engagement in their projects. Based on the successful implementation and findings of the ROSNUB project and the GPS module, this workshop will provide practical insights into integrating social networking and gamification (sociogamify) into software research, development, and innovation. Participants will explore the benefits of sociogamify, learn from real-world case studies, and understand the impact of the collaborative efforts between Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and Rexuniversal S.L. through a combination of keynote presentations, ideation sessions, and practical workshops. Attendees will develop actionable proposals and foster interdisciplinary collaboration, especially between industry and academia. By the end of the session, participants will gain practical knowledge on applying sociogamify in their research and industrial work to enhance user engagement.

W 05: Workshop: Integrating Executive Function Processes in Higher Education Classrooms: Strategies to Foster Students’ Self-knowledge and Academic Success. Location: Room U05-216 As responsible for students’ academic success, we need to be aware that in this digital, globalized era, learners need technological expertise and, more importantly, mastery of processes such as goal setting, planning, prioritization, organization, flexibility to change, manipulation of information in working memory, and self-monitoring. These processes are called executive function (EF) processes. It is essential to use strategies that systematically address these processes in the classroom to help students understand how they think and how they learn, while helping them acquire and develop key soft-skills for academic success. This paper 1) provides, using a pedagogical engineering approach, a paradigm for teaching learners strategies that integrate EF processes; 2) describes models and strategies that can be used to learn different materials; 3) provides space to test these methods; 4) allows participants to share plans to integrate their workshop experience in their practice.

W 06: Workshop: Makerspace - Training On Soft-skills and Entrepreneurial Thinking Location: Room U06-401 This special session is built on the Erasmus+ co-funded Project on Ethiopian-Djibouti - Females at Makerspace (EtD-FaM). Besides establishing makerspaces at 5 Ethiopian Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) and at the University of Djibouti. This special session will create a lighthouse effect by providing insights to: (1) the importance for female lecturers/researchers/students; (2) an extended needs analysis to learn about the shortcomings in vocational training; (3) the learning from the European experiences; (4) to complement the theoretical leaning at UAS; (5) the specific teaching and learning methodology; (6) overcome the shortage on internship/externship placements; (7) to train female students in entrepreneurial skills and mindset; (8) consider a makerspace as a center for R&D. |
W 09: Workshop: The ABET Perspective Programmatic Accreditation in the STEM Disciplines Location: Main Hall (Aula) room U01-201 This seminar will focus the approach ABET uses for accrediting STEM academic programs. Topics include the philosophy, principles and tools for the accreditation process as well as the use of assessment methods for demonstrating compliance with criteria. |
