Self-criticism as a dialogical process: Matching together Emotion-Focused Therapy and the Dialogical Self University of Maia, Portugal & Center of Psychology at University of Porto Dialogical Self-Theory (DST) and Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) have developed as parallel approaches that emphasize the multiplicity and relational nature of the self. Despite these shared assumptions, they have largely evolved in distinct ways. This presentation explores both the tensions and the commonalities between these approaches in order to find potential benefits of their cross-fertilization. Self-criticism will be used as a focal phenomenon for this analytic effort. In EFT, self-criticism, when involved in clinical problems, is typically conceptualized as a maladaptive internal process implicated in major clinical difficulties and addressed through two-chair interventions. Within DST, self-criticism can be understood as a tension between dialogical self-positions. Through the comparison of brief clinical excerpts illustrating two-chair work, the presentation will identify convergences and divergences between the two approaches. Finally, implications for theory development and clinical practice in both approaches will be outlined. | |
