This presentation provides an overview of the creation of the Best Practices for Electronic Score Licensing in Music Libraries Project Group, an initiative sponsored by the Libraries in Music Teaching Institutions Section (LIMTI) and approved at the IAML 2025 business meeting in Salzburg. The Project Group is led by the Steering Committee composed of: Houman Behzadi, Chair; Birgit Lechner, Secretary; Carla Williams and Charles Peters, ex officio members (LIMTI). Established to address the growing complexities of electronic score licensing, the project aims to develop comprehensive best practices that support equitable access, legal compliance, and fair compensation across music libraries worldwide.
Williams and Peters will begin by outlining the origins of the proposal and the motivations that shaped the initial vision for the project. Behzadi will then present the project charter in detail, including the governance structure, timelines, deliverables, and risk-management strategies. This section will also introduce the mandates and thematic focus of the nine subgroups: public libraries; orchestra libraries; conservatory libraries; academic libraries; metadata and cataloguing; acquisition and lifecycle; controlled digital lending; ethics and advocacy; licensing and copyright; and user education. The coordination between these subgroups and the Steering Committee, as well as the plan for synthesizing their outputs into model licenses, best-practice guidelines, and educational resources, will also be outlined.
Lechner will provide an update on subgroup recruitment and early progress, highlighting the formation process and initial activities. The session will conclude with time for questions and feedback from the IAML community.
