Fostering Sustainability Transitions: Multilevel Scaling Dynamics in Community Enterprises and the Commons

Community enterprises play a crucial role in sustainability transitions as they develop locally embedded solutions to address global challenges. Rooted in cooperative and participatory governance models, these organizations foster social innovation, support energy transitions, and manage shared resources. However, their ability to scale remains shaped by institutional frameworks, power dynamics, and macroeconomic and policy forces, making the process complex and not yet fully understood. To address these gaps, this 90-minute symposium features 3 papers that examine the drivers, mechanisms, and challenges of scaling community enterprises across different contexts and levels of analysis. The studies explore regional variations, macroeconomic influences, grassroots-driven expansion, and governance structures that impact scaling dynamics. Following the presentations, an interactive discussion with the audience will provide critical insights and feedback on strategies to further stimulate the scaling processes of these enterprises
