Socio-Ecological Drivers of 24-hour Movement Behaviours: From Guidelines Adherence Studies to Methodological Advances in Compositional Data Analysis The 24-hour movement guidelines represent a paradigm shift in public health, integrating physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep. Despite their growing adoption, significant gaps remain in understanding how socio-ecological factors influence guidelines adherence, particularly within European contexts. This symposium aims to address these gaps by presenting comprehensive evidence from a global literature synthesis to findings from a large-scale Slovenian survey and device-measured insights. Furthermore, it intends to showcase how advancing from traditional isolated-behaviour analysis to Bayesian compositional data analysis provides a more nuanced understanding of time-use patterns. Summary of Contributions: 1) Systematic Review: A synthesis of 18 studies identifies a significant guideline adherence gap among several sociodemographic groups, while highlighting a critical lack of European-based evidence. 2) Slovenian Population Study: Analysis of 2,333 adults reveals a low guideline adherence rate and identifies regional and socioeconomic disparities, providing a baseline for national public health policy. 3) Occupational Factors: Using activPAL accelerometers, this study demonstrates how shift work, longer working hours, and lower levels of occupational physical activity significantly hinder the likelihood of meeting guidelines. 4) Ageing Patterns & Methodology: This contribution introduces Bayesian Dirichlet regression within a case study, showing how ageing is associated with specific shifts in 24-hour movement behaviour composition. 5) Natural Environments: Exploring environmental drivers, this research suggests that green and outdoor time are important correlates that may facilitate a healthier movement composition. This symposium is unique in including evidence on 24-hour movement behaviour correlates across the socio-ecological framework and moves beyond guidelines adherence studies by introducing advanced Bayesian compositional modelling to account for the perfect multicollinearity of 24-hour data. Conclusion and Key Take-Home Messages: 1) Adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines is generally low and strongly patterned by sociodemographic, occupational, and environmental factors. 2) Socioeconomic inequality, workplace factors, and outdoor time are important targets for interventions aimed at optimizing 24-hour movement behaviours. 3) Methodological advances, such as Bayesian compositional data analysis, enable a more nuanced understanding of 24-hour movement behaviour correlates. This symposium contributes to the understanding of socio-ecological drivers of 24-hour movement behaviours and introduces advanced methodological approaches, providing better evidence to inform public health policies in Europe. Presentations of the Symposium Sociodemographic Correlates of Adherence to 24-hour Movement Guidelines among Adults: A Systematic Literature Review Purpose: Over the last decade, several countries have issued 24-hour movement guidelines that integrate recommendations for physical activity, sedentary behaviour, and sleep. The aim of this study was to review the literature on the associations between guidelines adherence and sociodemographic factors among adults. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted for the period from January 2016 to June 2024. Studies were included if they: (1) were peer-reviewed and published in English, (2) included adults aged 18 years and over, and (3) reported associations between at least one sociodemographic factor and meeting the recommendation(s) of established 24-hour movement guidelines. Results: Out of 746 unique records, 18 studies met the inclusion criteria. Studies were conducted in North America (n=9), South America (n=4), and Asia (n=5). Sample sizes ranged between 15–165,577 participants. All but one study referred to the Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines for adults. Adherence to overall 24-hour movement guidelines ranged between 0%–27%. In general, studies reported that being male, younger, married, white, highly educated, and having a higher socioeconomic status was associated with higher odds of meeting combined 24-hour movement guidelines. Conclusions: Adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines is significantly influenced by sociodemographic factors. The findings highlight an adherence gap among female, older, unmarried, non-white populations, and those with lower levels of education or socioeconomic status, necessitating targeted public health interventions. The lack of research from European populations indicates a clear need for future studies in this region. Slovenian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines: Adherence and Sociodemographic Correlates among 2,333 Adults Purpose: Slovenia recently issued its first 24-hour movement guidelines for adults. Currently, data on adherence and correlates are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of meeting these guidelines among Slovenian adults. Methods: Participants (n=2,333, 74% females, 18-92 years) completed an online survey including the Daily Activity Behaviours Questionnaire (DABQ) and sociodemographic characteristics. Adherence was assessed for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA: ≥150 min/week), sedentary behaviour (SB: ≤7h/day), sleep (7-9 h/day for adults aged 18-64 years; 7-8 h/day for 65+ years), and the combined guidelines (all three recommendations in a combination). Results: Adherence rates for MVPA, SB, sleep, and combined guidelines were 63.7%, 45.1%, 62.5%, and 20.1%, respectively. Adjusted multivariable logistic regression revealed that middle-aged and older adults had lower odds of meeting sleep recommendation. Males were less likely to meet SB recommendation, while older age and lower education were associated with higher SB adherence (p<0.05 for all). Low socioeconomic status and living in eastern region were associated with lower odds of meeting MVPA recommendation, while urban residency showed higher odds. Lower odds of meeting the combined guidelines were found among young adults, those with low socioeconomic status, and those with higher education (p<0.05 for all). Conclusions: Adherence to the 24-hour movement guidelines was relatively low, with significant sociodemographic disparities. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions. Further national representative studies are required to confirm these findings and guide evidence-based public health policies in Slovenia. Occupational Demands and the 24-Hour Day: Examining the Association between Work-Related Factors and Device-Measured 24-hour Movement Behaviours Purpose: The objective of this study was to explore the associations of work-related factors with meeting the 24-hour movement guidelines among employees across different occupations. Methods: A total of 178 employed adults (39.7±8.3 years, 30.9% females) wore an activPAL for seven days to objectively measure their 24-hour movement behaviours. Using adjusted multivariable logistic regression, we analysed the associations of job type, work schedule, work duration, and movement behaviours at work with meeting the 24-hour movement guidelines. Results: Shift work, including night shifts, was associated with a 4.23-fold higher likelihood of not meeting any recommendation (95% CI: 1.40–14.5) and a lower likelihood of meeting sleep recommendation (OR=0.38; 95% CI: 0.16–0.85). Longer work duration (OR=0.92; 95% CI: 0.85–0.98) and higher occupational sedentary behaviour (OR=0.94; 95% CI: 0.91–0.97) were associated with lower odds of meeting the sedentary behaviour recommendation. Conversely, higher occupational moderate-to-vigorous physical activity was associated with a lower likelihood of not meeting any recommendation (OR=0.60; 95% CI: 0.41–0.80) and higher odds of meeting sedentary behaviour (OR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.13–1.61), moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (OR=1.95; 95% CI: 1.52–2.64), and all three recommendations combined (OR=1.39; 95% CI: 1.15–1.71). No significant associations were found for job type. Conclusions: Employees with standard work schedules, shorter working hours, and higher levels of occupational moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were more likely to meet recommendations. Based on the presented research, workplace interventions should address work schedules and occupational activity to promote a healthy balance of 24-h movement behaviours. Age-Related Patterns of Self-Reported and Device-Measured 24-Hour Movement Behaviours: A Bayesian Compositional Data Analysis Purpose: Previous studies described how movement patterns vary across the lifespan by exploring each behaviour in isolation. The objective of this study was to examine the 24-hour movement behaviour composition that is associated with ageing. Methods: A subsample of 104 Slovenian adults (58% females, age: 18–73 years) from the 2024 National Health-related Lifestyle Survey was asked to complete GIB24-Q questionnaire and to wear an activPAL to assess their self-reported and device-measured 24-hour movement behaviours. We analysed the association between age and 24-hour movement behaviour composition consisting of sleep duration, sedentary behaviour (SB), light-intensity physical activity (LPA), and moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) using Bayesian Dirichlet regression. Results: We observed that LPA increases gradually with age, mainly at the expense of decreasing SB and sleep. The age-related pattern was consistent across both self-reported and device-measured data. For example, the self-reported (and device-measured) composition for a 25-year-old participant was 7.7 (7.5) h of sleep, 6.2 (10.9) h of SB, 8.6 (4.3) h of LPA, and 1.2 (1.2) h of MVPA. In comparison, for a 50-year-old, the composition was 7.5 (7.4) h of sleep, 5.6 (9.9) h of SB, 9.6 (5.3) h of LPA, and 1.3 (1.4) h of MVPA. Conclusions: Ageing was associated with a shift towards higher LPA and lower SB and sleep. While these findings warrant further investigation due to the small sample size, the introduced Bayesian compositional data analysis can also be used to explore other sociodemographic factors (e.g. in population surveillance). Time Spent in Nature and Device-Measured 24-Hour Movement Behaviour Composition: A Preliminary Findings from the GIB Study Purpose: Time spent outdoors, particularly in natural environments, improves physical and mental health through various mechanisms. This study examines the associations of time spent in nature and time spent outdoors with 24-hour movement behaviour composition among adults. Methods: A total of 104 Slovenian adults (58% females, age: 18–73 years) from the first wave of the GIB study completed the Healthy Built Environment Questionnaire (HeBEQ) to assess time spent in natural environments and time spent outdoors over the past seven days. They wore an activPAL continuously for seven days to assess 24-hour movement behaviours. Results: Participants reported spending on average 110 min/day in natural environments and 180 min/day outdoors. Using Bayesian Dirichlet regression, we found that spending more time in nature was associated with higher levels of light-intensity physical activity (LPA) and lower levels of sedentary behaviour (SB), while sleep duration and moderate-to-vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) remained relatively constant. For example, spending 120 min/day in nature compared to 30 min/day was associated with an increase in LPA of 12.3 minutes (95 % highest density interval (HDI): 3.0 to 21.0, probability of direction (PD): 99.4 %) with a corresponding reduction in SB of 13.8 minutes (95% HDI: -26.1 to -1.2, PD: 98.6 %). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that time spent in nature and outdoors is an important correlate of 24-hour movement behaviours, specifically by displacing SB with LPA. These results highlight the potential of green spaces as a viable public health strategy to support a more favourable movement pattern. | ||
