Physical Activity Level Measured by Devices among Urban Population in Country of Georgia, 2024 1: National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, Tbilisi, Georgia; 2: World Health Organization Country Office, Georgia; 3: University of Wollongong, Australia; 4: Division of Prevention and Health Promotion, World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe Introduction Physical activity (PA) is key to preventing diseases, especially cardiovascular conditions, yet it is difficult to measure accurately through self-report. This is the first study in Georgia to determine feasibility of accelerometers use to objectively measure PA as part of the WHO STEPS survey. Methods Between February and March 2024, 306 adults aged 18-69 in Tbilisi were recruited by convenience sampling from the interviewers’ social circles. Among them, PA was measured using wrist-worn Axivity AX3 accelerometers for 7 consecutive days. Sociodemographic data were collected via interview and accelerometer data analyzed using R GGIR package. Results Accelerometer was worn four days of more among 288 participants (94.1% response rate). Their mean age was 47.7 years (SD = 15.5), and the majority were female (76.0%). The overall mean daily moderate to vigorous PA (MVPA) was 100.9 minutes (± 95%CI 91.4-110.4) and 96.9% of participants met the WHO recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate PA per week or equivalent amount of MVPA. Participants aged 18-29 had the highest mean daily MVPA (119.5 (± 95%CI 100.5-138.5) while those aged 60-69 had the lowest (79.6 (± 95%CI 65.1-94.1). Females had higher daily MVPA than males (103.0 vs. 94.2 minutes; p value = 0.44). Discussion This pilot study showed that objective measurement of PA is feasible in Georgia as part of the WHO STEPS survey. Large majority of participants attained the WHO recommendation for daily MVPA. Objective measurement of PA using accelerometers in a nationally representative sample is needed to determine true prevalence of insufficient PA in Georgia. | |
