Associations between different intensities of leisure-time physical activity and subsequent psychotropic medication: a 3-year follow-up study University of Helsinki, Finland Background and aim of the study Physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of future psychotropic medication. However, previous studies have not examined the role physical activity intensity. Consequently, this study aimed to examine associations between different intensities of leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and subsequent psychotropic medication purchases. Methods The study was conducted on Helsinki Health Study (HHS) questionnaire data collected from 19–39-year-old employees of the City of Helsinki in 2017 and linked register data from 2014 to 2020 on psychotropic medication purchases (82.5% gave linkage permission). Those with ongoing psychotropic medication (n=334) were excluded. The final analytical sample consisted of 3766 participants (80.5% women). Weekly hours for light (LPA), moderate (MPA) and vigorous (VPA) LTPA were examined as separate variables. Mean follow-up time was 3.2 years. Cox’s regression results are reported as hazard ratios (HR) for the first psychotropic medication purchase. Results Of the participants, 15.6% had a recorded psychotropic medication purchase during the follow-up. Similarly, 11.8% had purchases in the prior 3 years. Adjusting gender and age none of the intensities of LTPA were associated with future psychotropic medication. Further adjustment for prior psychotropic medication did not change the results (HR = 1.01, 95% CI, 0.99–1.02 for LPA; HR = 1.00, 95% CI, 0.97–1.03 for MPA; HR = 0.97, 95% CI, 0.93–1.01 for VPA). Conclusions Regardless of intensity LTPA was not associated with future psychotropic medication purchases. More research is needed to clarify the role of specific intensities of LTPA. | |
