Session Abstract

This special session focuses on STI research and policies and how these may contribute to the implementation of the SDGs.

Given its focus on (technological) learning, innovation and competence building systems the Globelics community has a special advantage in supporting the implementation in particular of the SDG 9 (‘Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation’) and SDG 17 (‘Partnerships for the SDGs, including the Technology Facilitation Mechanism), but STI research remains highly relevant also for the implementation of other SDGs.

The panel will focus on a range of related questions: What progress and which challenges are related to the integration of industrial development milestones in the SDGs? How can the scientific community develop a research agenda that supports the implementation of the SDGs and engage more actively in developing indicators and setting targets for the STI related sustainable development goals? And finally: what should be the role of research funders (domestic and international) in the process?
