Session Abstract

The Agricultural Innovation System (AIS), a derivative of innovation system perspective, attributes the backwardness of agricultural sector to the absence of systems that facilitates interactive learning, innovation and competence building among the various actors involved. Hence agrarian transformation calls for building systems that facilitates, among others, technological, organizational and institutional innovations through interactive learning in the varied spheres of agriculture ranging from research, extension, production, processing, marketing, trade and other activities. The problem gets compounded because of multiple actors and emergence of new ones, especially the finance capital, and the changing institutional architecture at the global level. Further new issues arise, at varying intensity, out of environmental changes in general and global warming in particular, which makes the task of agrarian transformation more difficult than ever before. Addressing these issues calls for a vibrant agricultural innovation system. This session will convene experts from Africa, Asia and Latin America with the aim of achieving the following objectives:

• Understand the AIS and embedded institutional configurations in different contexts and sectoral areas in developing countries;

• Share experiences in different contexts on how the AIS has perceived the concept of inclusive innovation.
