Session Abstract

The aim of this session is to explore some of the challenges universities are presently facing. Among them, several are distinctly specific of developing countries, while others affect universities all over the world. How to foster quality knowledge production that responds to some extent to locally decided research agendas? How may social commitment become an integral and legitimized part of research, teaching and community engagement or extension? How to balance the diversity of interests at stake to preserve at the same time the most of the intellectual autonomy of the university institution and the capacity to respond to stakeholders demands? Addressing these questions was never simple; moreover, answers cannot but be exploratory, tentative and provisional, because contexts change.

The reason why this issue matters for the Globelics community relates to the role that universities may play in the emergence of inclusive and sustainable innovation systems. In a world of growing socio-economic inequalities and environmental-related dangers, all countervailing forces are important; transforming universities in one of them is a goal worth Globelics's attention. Transforming universities needs forces from within and from outside. The National Systems of Innovation approach is particularly apt to analyze the interplay of internal and external actors that form the wider space where universities work; it is good time to direct this focusing device to the challenges faced by universities as a contribution to theory and, hopefully, to action.
