Dissemination and Disinformation in Social Media Mapping
The Pennsylvania State University, United States of America
Social media platforms make it possible for maps to quickly become visible to very large audiences. We know relatively little however regarding how such maps originate. For example, how often are socially-shared maps created from scratch as original works, versus repurposed from existing map images? We can also be sure that maps remain potentially powerful vehicles for spreading disinformation. In this presentation we describe recent efforts to use reverse image search and image analysis systems to visualize the origins of maps in social media and to identify potential modifications of maps that may be intended to spread disinformation.
Outwitting Algorithms: Autonomy and Resistance in the Postdigital Age
Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Germany
How can spatial education foster creative and autonomous acting in the postdigital age? In this context, the ability to resist algorithms that restrict democracy and to find creative ways to outwit them has become increasingly important. This presentation discusses possible strategies using the example of online participation platforms.
