Session Abstract

The rise of digital geomedia as a cultural technique for multimedia-based communication of geographical knowledge causes altered educational requirements. Besides technical skills and data literacy, competences of argumentation, reflection, and participation also become crucial for empowering people for a critical use of open data, media, and technology related to geospatial computing in society. Thus, there is a need for new concepts of digital teaching and learning in schools and, thus, in the field of geography teacher education to take into account the demands of real world-centered, context-based and participatory geomedia applications as a transdisciplinary media language.

Our workshop will explore to what extent the dominating technical concept of digital geomedia can be transferred to a "digital pedagogical concept" for geomedia education in geography. We welcome participants who are interested in working on the following questions:

  • What subject-specific and media pedagogical principles can we define for the configuration of digital geomedia as media of digital teaching and learning in geography?
  • How can we embed geographic content knowledge into appropriate learning contexts within open and participatory digital knowledge structures, so-called Open Educational Ressources (OER)?
  • How can we change teachers' pedagogical practices for the innovative use and design of open digital learning environments in terms of Open Educational Practices (OEP)?

Topics: Learning Environments in Schools, Spatial Citizenship

Keywords: Digital Pedagogical Concept, Teacher Education, Geospatial Technologies, Digital Geomedia, Open Educational Resources
