Zusammenfassung der Sitzung

The workshop aims to present and open to discussion the theoretical, methodological and practical uses of “Urban Consciousness” (www.concienciaurbana.com), an interactive educational platform that promotes critical spatial consciousness in secondary students in Santiago de Chile, the main metropolis of the country. By integrating public quantitative data, spatial georeferencing, and daily life experiences expressed in personal stories [relatos], the project seeks students to be able to understand that space is an important dimension for people’s quality of life; therefore, it cannot continue to be omitted anymore when analyzing social problems and developing proposals for social transformation.

The basic question is, why with maps? Because maps allow us to read general data and “link” them to a real space. By doing this, youth students (and eventually any citizen without specialized knowledge) can achieve a more concrete understanding of daily urban life and imagine better future alternatives. Students discover new ways to connect different social problems, which would otherwise remain hidden from their view.

Topics: Empirical Research in Spatial Education, Learning Environments in Schools, Spatial Citizenship, Spatial Approaches in Innovation Education

Keywords: Critical Spatial Consciousness, Secondary Students, Spatial Citizenship, Chile, Critical GIS, Global South Technology Challenges
