The use of subwavelength grating structures in silicon waveguides have fuelled the development of integrated optical components with superior performance. By a judicious lithographic patterning of the grating, the optical properties of the synthesized metamaterial can be accurately tailored. In this work, we review our latest advances in subwavelength-grating-engineered silicon and germanium planar devices.

Silicon nanostructures for sensing and spectroscopy

The scalability of silicon photonics offers major opportunities for the healthcare market, where large volumes and low cost are key attributes. We will discuss applications in immunosensing, where we have used resonant silicon nanostructures to demonstrate pg/ml sensitivity, i.e. as good or better than the ELISA laboratory standard, while being compatible with handheld operation. We also see exciting opportunities in the mid-IR, where silicon photonics has the prospect to play a major role, such as "FTIR on a chip".

Broadband photonic devices are required to realise mid-infrared spectrometers in silicon and germanium,. In this abstract we present broadband waveguides, splitters and detectors. These devices have been fabricated on the silicon-on-insulator and germanium-on-silicon platforms and showed good performance over large wavelength ranges.
