Nanophotonic lasers on a graph

I will discuss our recent efforts to control light emission in metamaterials with network architectures, where light flows and get amplified on a random graph, which is random lasing in nanostructured sub-wavelength networks.

I will show how unbalancing the mode competition is an effective strategy for spectral selection of the lasing emission and single-out a lasing frequency out of the spectral haystack. I will conclude with some thoughts on how network lasers have potential for neuromorphic signal processing and computing.

Highly symmetric aperiodic structures

The symmetries of periodic structures are severely constrained by the crystallographic restriction. In particular, in two and three spatial dimensions only rotational axes of order 1, 2, 3, 4 or 6 are possible. Aperiodic tilings can provide ordered structures with arbitrary symmetry properties. Some key examples and their diffraction are discussed.

Multifractal nanophotonics: engineering light scattering and localization phenomena in multiscale dielectric environments

In this talk, we discuss our recent results on the design and engineering of aperiodic nanostructures with multifractal properties for enhanced light-matter coupling and rouge wave phenomena. We focus on arrays of dielectric nanoparticles arranged on planar substrates according to the distributions of prime numbers in imaginary quadratic fields. In particular, by performing diffraction and leaky-mode imaging experiments at a high numerical aperture, we demonstrate the excitation of critically localized optical resonances with non-Gaussian statistics and controllable multifractal spectra for the manipulation of rogue wave phenomena in deterministic aperiodic environments.
