Poster ‘Turning the Tables‘: Exploring How Children Influence Middle-Aged Adults‘ Participation in Contemporary Art Museums through Family Interactions University of Glasgow, United Kingdom Presenting Author:This paper constitutes the literature review component of an ongoing doctoral research project. It responds to the context of contemporary social and cultural transformation and explores the reconfiguration of intergenerational interaction within cultural learning settings from an adult perspective. Intergenerational interaction is understood as a mechanism through which participation relationships and shifts in subject positions are shaped within cultural learning practices. Drawing on a constructivist perspective and adopting Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital as the analytical framework(Bourdieu, 1984), the study focuses on whether children’s perceptions of art and their behaviours during interaction can exert a reverse influence on middle-aged adults’ motivation and their understanding of art. It further considers whether this process challenges pathways of cultural capital accumulation and transmission. Since the emergence of New Museology theory (Vergo, 1989), public participation has increasingly become a key focus in museum research. Museum learning is now more commonly understood as a cultural practice that extends across the life course (Trujillo-Torres et al., 2023). At the same time, demographic changes, cultural democratisation, and lifelong learning–oriented educational policies have reinforced intergenerational participation in museum education as an important field of research. Existing studies on intergenerational education have demonstrated positive effects in supporting children’s zones of proximal development (ZPD) (Vygotskiĭ et al., 1978) and older adults in rebuilding social connections. (Webster et al., 2024, Krok-Schoen et al., 2025). While acknowledging these contributions, the study further asks whether the generative intergenerational potential of midlife, often viewed primarily as a stage of transmission rather than generation of value, has been consistently underestimated in research on artistic and cultural participation? Midlife is commonly understood as a life stage that carries responsibility for maintaining continuity and consolidating existing cultural resources(Infurna et al., 2020). At the same time, it represents a key stage for the accumulation, transformation, and redistribution of cultural resources. Individuals at this stage are often positioned at the centre of intergenerational relationships and experience frequent intergenerational contact ((Kim et al., 2024). It is precisely from this intergenerational nexus that middle-aged adults’ cultural participation experiences are not only related to their own learning and development, but also shape family-based cultural practices (van Hek and Kraaykamp, 2015). In this context, contemporary art museums, as cultural institutions characterised by future-oriented perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches, demonstrate distinctive potential in enhancing public cultural literacy and stimulating critical thinking and social engagement. However, compared with traditional museums, contemporary art museums demand greater cultural capital and present more challenging interpretive processes(Stallabrass, 2020). Within this orientation, younger audiences have become the primary focus of research, In response to this and further critiques (Burns et al., 2025), this research asks whether approaches might enable more inclusive engagement with contemporary art museums, allowing a wider range of groups to become meaningfully involved? As research perspectives have gradually shifted from individual visitors to more situated and process-oriented understandings of cultural participation, family education has increasingly entered the field as an important unit of analysis. Nevertheless, existing studies in this area remain predominantly child-centred. Building on this, the study further considers whether children can be understood as agentic nodes within family learning contexts, and, adopting a decentring of child-focused perspectives, how intergenerational education might operate through children’s perceptions of contemporary art to influence and reshape middle-aged parents’ understanding of contemporary art? To address these questions, this study reviews current research on museum education, intergenerational learning, middle-aged adults, and family participation in art museums. Through sustained analysis, it seeks to identify and clarify learning subjects, roles within intergenerational interactions, and modes of participation, thereby providing an analytical foundation for subsequent discussion of middle-aged adults’ participation experiences in art museums. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts an interpretivist ontological position(Crotty, 1998) and a constructivist epistemological stance(Hallberg, 2006). Meaning is constructed through the analysis of participatory learning processes, contextual experiences, and specific interaction patterns, with the overall aim of examining how new modes of interaction influence middle-aged adults’ participation, learning experiences, and role understandings within intergenerational education. The literature analysis is conducted using a constructivist grounded theory (CGT) approach (Charmaz, 2006). Previous studies are treated as interpretive materials through which intergenerational learning in art museum contexts is conceptualised. Particular attention is paid to the positioning of learning subjects, shifts in roles, and the forms and experiences of intergenerational learning, in order to support the development of the research focus. This study selected literature published between 2016 and 2025, drawing from databases including Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles that were thematically relevant and representative were chosen as analytical materials and examined in conjunction with research data obtained through field observation. The literature search involved systematic combinations and arrangements of keywords related to the research topic. Core search terms included Museum Education, Intergenerational Education, Midlife, Art Education, and Learning in Contemporary Art Museums. In addition to identifying keywords and phrases closely aligned with the research context, synonyms and conceptually related expressions were included to ensure both breadth and relevance of coverage (Fortuna et al., 2025). The initial search yielded thousands of articles. After excluding articles with titles and abstracts unrelated to the research focus, this study included 89 studies for in-depth analysis. Each selected article was read in full and subjected to open coding and conceptualisation, with particular attention to intergenerational interaction, family-based museum learning, participation pathways of children and adults, and role positioning. Through comparative, integrative, and cross-text analysis, the main themes were identified as follows: parental support for children’s understanding of and participation in museum learning; the ways in which family interaction shapes children’s participation pathways; the influence of art experiences on children’s cognition; the positioning of adults primarily as companions; and the role of younger generations in helping older adults alleviate psychological difficulties in intergenerational learning contexts. Through this process of collection and analysis, the study discusses subjects and forms within intergenerational museum education research, providing an analytical basis for identifying gaps and questions for subsequent investigation. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Research in intergenerational learning in art museums reveals limitations in existing studies and important conceptual and methodological foundations for the present research. Studies focusing on contemporary art museums remain scarce, often restricted to aesthetic experience or exhibition content (Chalas, 2016). Furthermore, family museum education frameworks display a strong child-centered orientation. While research provides insights into children’s perception and interaction (Willard et al., 2019), it has also constrained the perspective by framing parents as supportive roles. In addition, field observations show that adult programming remains limited by a reliance on lecture and dialogue-based formats, restricting diverse participation. There still remains a lack of in-depth understanding of middle-aged adults’ participation in museums. Compared with others, this group has long occupied a marginal research position. In response, this study adopts a problem-oriented approach that foregrounds the necessity of addressing “midlife issues” by centering on middle-aged adults as subjects rather than contextual conditions. By foregrounding children’s influence on parents, exploring new participatory models for middle-aged audiences in contemporary art museums. Using a qualitative approach within an action research framework, along with art-based methods, meaning is constructed through the analysis of children’s reverse influence on middle-aged adults, and the interaction processes and specific interaction patterns that emerge in situated contexts. This study examines how children’s perceptions of contemporary art reshape middle-aged adults’ participation and learning, and further considers whether this influences cultural capital patterns and opens new engagement pathways. This research seeks to address age-related imbalances in art museum studies and their limitations for research perspectives. It offers a new analytical lens for intergenerational educational practices in art museums and, on this basis, explores possible forms of pedagogical strategies in museum education. It further examines whether, and how, such strategies may provide new directions for future practice by fostering more interactive and sustainable intergenerational learning. Poster A World to Win with Education for Sustainability: Enhancing Student Teachers’ Professional Action Competence. 1: Utrecht Univeristy, Netherlands, The; 2: Marnix Academie University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands, The Presenting Author:Education plays a crucial role in preparing new generations for global challenges, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (United Nations, 2015). There is broad consensus that education should help learners develop competencies for a more sustainable future (UNESCO, 2020). The call by Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, underlines the urgency of action-oriented education: “It’s time to mainstream … education with an action-oriented approach that helps young people understand their power to make a difference” (UNESCO, 2024). This highlights the need to equip primary school teachers with the competencies required to foster such transformative learning processes. However, many teachers are still insufficiently prepared in this area (Boeve-de Pauw et al., 2022; Rieckmann, 2019). Teachers and teacher educators experience challenges in designing education that strengthens social engagement and participation, particularly in relation to sustainability issues (Van Poeck et al., 2023). Within teacher education, students should be able to develop competencies in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), aimed at fostering knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes that contribute to a more sustainable society (UNESCO, 2020). Sustainability is broadly defined through five interrelated pillars: People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership (Rahm et al., 2025). Teacher education can play a key role in promoting ESD in primary education (Rieckmann, 2019). Like other young people, student teachers often experience emotions such as concern, anxiety, and paralysis when confronted with complex societal issues, such as climate change and inequality of opportunity (Ojala, 2016). Professional action competence for ESD enables (prospective) teachers to channel these emotions into action. A professionally action competent teacher is committed, demonstrates confidence in their own abilities, and possesses the pedagogical knowledge and skills required to teach ESD (Sass et al., 2022). An individual’s values play an important role in sustainable behavior and influence so-called environmentally significant behavior (ESB), defined as behavior that has direct consequences for the quality of the natural environment (Stern, 2000). Three value orientations - egoistic, altruistic, and biospheric- are considered relevant in the literature for understanding environmental awareness and intentions (De Groot et al., 2008). These value orientations may function as an important moderator of variation in the development of professional action competence among student teachers. Teacher education has a crucial role in stimulating teachers’ professional action competence; research shows that many teachers experience difficulties in implementing ESD (Sass et al., 2022; Boeve-de Pauw et al., 2022). This PhD research explores how the professional action competence for ESD of student teachers develops over a three-year period during their study. It examines which factors related to coursework, internships, and social experiences are associated with this development, and what role students’ value orientations play. The study will also clarify which subject-didactic design principles contribute to strengthening the professional action competence of student teachers. The aim is to optimize teacher education in order to better prepare future student teachers and the primary school pupils they will teach, for the challenges of their time. This PhD research addresses the following main questions: How to enhance student teachers professional action competence in ESD? And the following sub-questions: 1. (a) How does the professional action competence of student teachers develop throughout their teacher education, and (b) how are aspects of coursework, internships, and other social experiences related to this development? 2. How does student teachers’ value orientation (egoistic, altruistic, biospheric) influence the development of their professional action competence during their teacher education? 3. Which subject-didactic design principles for ESD create the conditions for teacher education that enhance the professional action competence of student teachers? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This PhD research follows pre-service primary teachers over a period of three years and adopts an explanatory sequential mixed methods design (Creswell, 2015), in which quantitative and qualitative methods complement one another. The study comprises four complementary sub-studies that together provide insight into the development of professional action competence in ESD among student teachers and how this competence can be strengthened. Study 1 consists of a scoping review conducted following the PRISMA-ScR framework and focuses on subject-didactic design principles and effective approaches in ESD that strengthen the professional action competence of student teachers. It builds on earlier studies on ESD competencies. The results inform Study 3 and contribute to sub-question 3. Study 2 examines the development of professional action competence among student teachers through a quantitative longitudinal analysis of a cohort of 200 students, starting in the academic year 2026–2027. Within the programme, students learn to design and implement ESD in their internship classrooms in primary education. Data collection uses two validated instruments; Professional Action Competence in Education for Sustainable Development (PACesd) (Sass et al., 2022), measuring professional action competence in ESD and Value Orientations Scale (VOS) (De Groot et al., 2008), measuring value orientations. Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis identify latent dimensions of professional action competence, and SEM and latent growth models analyse its longitudinal development, including the role of values and study, internship, and social experiences. This addresses sub-question 1. Study 3 includes two qualitative sub-studies: cross-sectional interviews across cohorts and a three-year longitudinal focus group study. Together, they examine the development of professional action competence (sub-question 1) and students’ value orientations (sub-question 2). Study 4 develops a student typology, based on integrated quantitative (Study 2) and qualitative (Study 3) data, to formulate subject-didactic design principles for ESD. Using a person-centred, cluster-based approach enriched with qualitative insights, it links developmental patterns in professional action competence and value orientations. Together with Study 1, it informs coherent ESD design principles, addressing sub-question 3 and guiding implementation in teacher education. A sounding board of teacher educators and field partners refines the student typologies and ESD design principles through ongoing, practice-based input. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As this PhD project is currently in its initial phase and conducted by a teacher educator within the teacher education programme, the study is expected to generate both theoretical and practical contributions. Developed in close collaboration with supervisors and the teacher education programme, the research aims to identify student typologies in the development of professional action competence and to formulate subject-didactic design principles for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). By integrating these insights, the project is expected to strengthen the professional action competence of pre-service primary teachers, enabling them to integrate ESD effectively into their teaching practice and thereby contribute to meaningful and sustainable learning for future generations. The longitudinal design and close integration with the teacher education programme, offers methodological innovations that provide insight into student development and the underlying influencing factors. Furthermore, by connecting developmental psychology and educational sciences, the study is expected to offer both theoretical advancement and practical guidance, thereby enriching the scientific evidence base on professional action competence in education. In addition, the project seeks to address a persistent gap in ESD research: while policy and curriculum frameworks increasingly emphasize action competence, empirical insights into how this competence develops in teacher education remain limited. By tracing student teachers’ development over time, the study aims to make the process of becoming an action-competent teacher more transparent and theoretically grounded. The findings are expected to inform curriculum design within teacher education programmes, support teacher educators in scaffolding transformative learning processes, and contribute to international discussions on preparing teachers for sustainability transitions. Poster Developing a Design-Thinking Based Game to Support Sustainability Education in Middle School HEP Vaud, Switzerland Presenting Author:We are in 2026, and we are feeling the planetary boundaries affecting our everyday physical and mental health (Patz & al., 2005; Climate Change and Human Behaviour, 2022). What and how do we feel when we are in our workplaces in July and need air conditioning (IEA, 2023), or when we receive a notification on our phone that temperatures will continue to reach record highs this year (Minet, 2025)? According to Crutzen and Stoermer (2000), the Anthropocene era, which began around the 1850s, has seen an escalation in the carbon impacts and effects of human society in everyday life and across biodiversity. Sustainability discussions began in 1972 with the report The Limits to Growth (Meadows et al., 1972), moving from shyness to “mainstream” subjects (Castro, 2004), to now being back in the daily news, creating controversial discussions, and becoming a challenge (Fischer & al., 2023). Society continues to follow the “business as usual” approach, as if there were sufficient resources, causing sustainability goals to fail (Palomo & al., 2024). It’s time for change. Human learning influences everyday behaviours and decisions, including social interactions, consumption, travel, and psychological well-being (Green & Bavelier, 2008). Education has the mission of enabling children to manage their future and to play an active role in society (UNESCO, 2015). Adaptation and sustainability have entered educational debates. In Switzerland, policymakers acknowledge the need to integrate these topics into schools. However, the aspects teachers should address, the depth of classroom discussions, the methods for implementation, and the time allocated to these themes have not yet been clearly specified (Curnier, 2017, pp. 293, 377). One possibility for integrating these interdisciplinary topics could be games. Collaborative game-based approaches allow children to develop both hard and soft skills (Abdul Jabbar & Felicia, 2015; Hui & Mahmud, 2023). They also offer opportunities for collective reflection and teamwork (Abdul Jabbar & Felicia, 2015), while opening the door to creativity (Daniau, 2016), which can support pupils in their future lives (Romero & al., 2015). “Games of imagination” (Karwowski & Soszynski, 2008) allow pupils to immerse themselves and engage in different situations (Huynh & al., 2020; Zhang & al., 2025). In the school context, Edu-RPGs (Educational Role-Playing Games) enable students to enhance identity-building, critical thinking, and expression, while fostering motivation, communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills through experiential and reflective learning (Martinez-Lejarreta & al., 2024). Communicating and playing together, in new situations and through problem-solving, develops teamwork habits (Daniau, 2016). Problem-solving can be approached in various ways, depending on the nature of the problem itself (Csapó & Funke, 2017). Well-structured problems are characterized by a clearly defined initial state, a known goal state, and a constrained set of logical operations that lead to correct and convergent solutions. They follow a direct and linear path, guided by strict parameters and defined outcomes. In contrast, Ill-structured problems are open-ended and complex, resembling real-life dilemmas with unpredictable outcomes. Their resolution is iterative and adaptive, requiring creativity and the integration of diverse knowledge domains (Jonassen, 1997), innovative minds are precisely what our society needs now and in the future, to hold challenges. To build problem-solving skills through iterative and creative processes, Design Thinking methods represent a powerful tool when implemented at work and in classrooms (Henriksen & al., 2017; Foster, 2021). These methods can focus on exploring all aspects of problems through multiple sources and iterations (Carroll & al., 2010), while encouraging creativity and idea-sharing. This research investigates the potential of a collaborative table-top game to introduce sustainability in primary education, while using Design Thinking to foster creativity, problem-solving, and essential soft skills. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research adopts a design-based research (DBR) methodology, which is suited to investigating learning processes while simultaneously developing and refining educational interventions in classroom contexts (Sandoval & Bell, 2004b; Collective, 2003). This approach supports the iterative design, implementation, analysis, and redesign of a collaborative table-top role-playing game designed to engage pupils in sustainability-related problem-solving scenarios. Through the use of fictional yet realistic situations, the game encourages collaboration, discussion, and creativity, brought by Design Thinking tools through play and supporting pupils’ reflection on decisions and outcomes. The study will be structured around two gameplay sessions with the same groups of pupils, allowing for the observation of both initial engagement and subsequent evolution in understanding, collaborative dynamics, and problem-solving strategies. In line with DBR principles, insights from the first session may inform adjustments to the game design before the second session. This research will focus on pupils aged 8 to 10 years old (5H–6H) in Switzerland, as children become aware of sustainability-related challenges at an increasingly young age (Erol, 2024), and eco-anxiety already affects 42% of primary school–aged children (Hensler & al., 2025), it is essential to equip them with tools to understand and address these challenges. According to Bruner (1963), any subject can be taught to any child in an intellectually honest form. He argues that learning should begin as early as possible, as children develop by being confronted with meaningful problems that stimulate thinking, promote growth, and support their cognitive development. Data collection will combine qualitative and quantitative methods to capture changes over time. Pupils will complete a questionnaire before and after to the two gameplay sessions, enabling an examination of the evolution of their understanding of sustainability-related challenges, their attitudes toward collaboration, and their perceptions of problem-solving processes. These questionnaires will be complemented by classroom observations, audio and video recordings of gameplay sessions, and the analysis of pupils’ interactions, decisions, and game-produced artefacts. Semi-structured interviews with teachers and reflective feedback from pupils will provide additional perspectives on engagement, usability, and perceived learning outcomes. Data analysis will rely primarily on qualitative thematic analysis, focusing on patterns of collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving, as well as the ways in which pupils appropriate Design Thinking practices through play, while pre- and post-questionnaire responses will be used to contextualise and comment on observed developments across the two sessions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This research is expected to provide an idea of how Design Thinking can be introduced to pupils aged 8 to 10 and to assess its potential within a school context. The collaborative tabletop game is anticipated to encourage discussion, reflection and idea-sharing among pupils, potentially extending beyond the classroom to spark conversations within their families. The study will explore whether collaborative Design Thinking games in education should be investigated further as a means of strengthening sustainability awareness, supporting active problem-solving skills and reducing eco-anxiety in children. Through classroom practices designed around children’s literature, the study addresses the following research question: How do art-based learning processes influence students’ understandings of cultural participation, equality, and expression? Rather than transmitting cultural rights through didactic instruction, the study seeks to examine how experiencing culture through artistic processes affects children’s subjective meaning-making. Drama and thinking strategies are positioned as pedagogical tools that enable children to develop interpretations, engage in non-verbal expression, and make their cultural experiences visible. The purpose of this study is to investigate how art-based classroom activities developed based on Alain Serres' children's book Tous les enfants ont le droit d’être cultivés (Every Child Has the Right to Be Cultured) reflect primary school students' definitions of culture, their perception of culture as a right, and the ways in which they relate artistic and cultural participation to their daily lives. Based on an experiential approach to cultural rights, the study highlights children's meaning-making processes expressed through verbal, non-verbal, visual, and bodily forms, emphasizing learning through experience rather than transmission. Conceptual Framework The study is structured within the framework of Art-Based Learning, which recognizes knowledge production as not only cognitive but also sensory, embodied, and emotional (Anderson, 2004; Eisner, 2002). Children’s literature is conceptualized as a pedagogical gateway to abstract notions of cultural rights, while drama and visual thinking strategies are employed to support multiple interpretations, non-verbal expression, and the articulation of subjective experience. Within this framework, culture is not treated as a normative body of content to be transferred, but as a rights-based domain constructed through children’s experiences, interpretations, and participation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative case study design (Yin, 2018). The drama process functions simultaneously as a learning environment and a site of data generation. The study group consists of third-grade students attending a public primary school, selected through purposive sampling. To ensure data triangulation, multiple data sources are used, including drama process observations (researcher field notes, verbal and non-verbal expressions, and participation patterns), student artifacts (post-drama drawings, collages, and visual productions), and semi-structured group interviews conducted before and after the intervention with small groups of four to five students. The collected data are analyzed through qualitative content analysis. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Expected Outcomes The findings of this study are expected to show that primary school students' understanding of culture and cultural rights has shifted from a didactic knowledge level to an experiential and subjective one. The idea, highlighted in Alain Serres's book, that "culture is not a privilege but a right of every child," is likely to be expressed in students' discourse and artistic productions through personal meanings rather than definitions.In this context, drama is envisioned as enabling students to define cultural participation not only through access to museums, books, or art events, but also through actions such as playing, imagining, creating, and sharing. It is particularly expected that nonverbal expressions (drawing, body language, role-playing) will open up more inclusive and free spaces for children to express concepts of culture and rights; and that some students will make visible, through visual and dramatic means, thoughts they cannot articulate verbally. The findings are expected to enable students to concretize the concept of cultural equality and discuss it through awareness of who has access to culture and who is excluded. This study is important because it shows that art-based approaches in teaching cultural rights at the primary school level offer alternative pedagogical possibilities that center on children's subjective experiences.
