Paper The Use of Autonomy Among Physical Education Teachers 1: Nord University; 2: University of Jyväskylä; 3: University of Duhok; 4: Tampere University Presenting Author:While numerous studies have explored teacher autonomy within the PE context (Haerens et al., 2010, 2018; De Meyer et al., 2016; Huhtiniemi et al., 2019; Lonsdale et al., 2013; Oldervik and Lagestad, 2021; Van den Berghe et al., 2015), there is limited research that specifically examines the perceptions and reflections of PE teachers, particularly in a comparative manner with other regions. Furthermore, there is a paucity of research investigating the perceptions and reflections of PE teachers in KRI. Therefore, this study specifically focuses on autonomy in PE lessons by examining how PE teachers in both Finland and KRI utilize and reference autonomy in their teaching practices. The aim of the study was to examine fifth-grade physical education (PE) teachers’ reflections and perceptions about PE teaching in Finland and Kurdistan region of Iraq (KRI), using analyses of in-depth interviews with a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. When examining the use of autonomy in PE, Deci and Ryan (2000) self-determination theory constitutes an important theoretical lens. Deci and Ryan (2000) assert that three basic psychological needs exist in all humans: autonomy; relatedness; and competence. This article focuses on autonomy. Indeed, autonomy is essential for optimal motivation, integration, wellness, and well-being in PE, which leads to intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation refers to performing an activity because it is inherently interesting and provides its own reward by satisfying one’s basic needs for autonomy, competence, and/or relatedness (Deci and Ryan, 2000). Intrinsic motivation comes from within and leads to the kinds of behaviors that one wants to perform. If students feel that an activity has an inner value for them, this can lead to increased inner motivation, as indicated by Deci and Ryan (2000). We argue that intrinsic motivation is especially essential for students to create lifelong delight in movement. Intrinsic motivation is also closely connected to learning. Previous research has demonstrated that autonomy has a particularly positive effect on motivation in PE, and especially inner motivation (Deci and Ryan, 2000). According to Cheon and Reeve (2013), students will benefit from teachers’ adoption of an autonomy-supportive teaching style. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employs qualitative design, utilizing semi-structured in-depth interviews and a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach to investigate the research question (Tjora, 2017). This approach involves examining the opinions, attitudes, and reflections of Finnish and KRI fifth-grade PE teachers concerning their roles, as well as their insights on an indoor and an outdoor video showcasing typical PE teaching sessions from the other respective country. The participants were recruited using strategic selection (Thagaard, 2013) based on the inclusion criteria, which were being PE teachers for fifth-grade students in Finland or Kurdistan region of Iraq and having a candidate’s or master’s degree in PE or a master’s degree in education (class-teacher). In total, eight Finnish PE teachers (four male and four female) and six KRI PE teachers (three male and three female), agreed to participate in the study, after being contacted by the researchers. Recognizing the relevance of gender equality in data collection, a concerted effort was made to ensure balanced participation from both genders. Both a typical indoor and a typical outdoor PE lesson (45 min each) were filmed in both countries, and these videos were abridged to a 30-min video in each country, showing the essential parts of the typical indoor and outdoor PE lesson. A semi-structured interview guide with open-ended questions was created. The interview guide included two parts, i.e., questions at the start and questions after the participants had seen the video from the PE teaching outside of their country. A pilot interview was conducted in Norway to test the interview guide. The pilot interview indicated that the questions seemed relevant. However, small changes were made to the questions and the order of the questions. The interviews with Finnish PE teachers were carried out face-to-face in the Pirkanmaa region, except for one which was conducted online using Microsoft Teams. The interviews with the KRI PE teachers took place face-to-face at schools in the Duhok region. Most interviews were conducted in the participants’ native languages (Finnish or Kurdish), although three interviews with Finnish participants were conducted in English. However, these participants were also given the opportunity to communicate in Finnish toward the end of their interviews. All interviews were translated into English, facilitating their readiness for joint analysis. Each interview lasted between 90 and 100 min, including a 30-min segment in the middle that was dedicated to viewing videos. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings While the analyses showed that all the Finnish PE teachers highlighted the importance of providing student autonomy within the open-ended questions related to PE, PE teachers in KRI seldom discussed autonomy during the open-ended questions. Instead, they seemed to organize their teaching in a way that decreased autonomy. The Finnish PE teachers indicated that the use of autonomy was central in the curriculum, and that they used autonomy to increase the students’ motivation and to make PE more meaningful for the students. With such a strategy, the use of autonomy would also activate and include more students, even if Finnish PE teachers reported certain challenges with students’ autonomy. The PE teachers from KRI, however, related PE to be mainly focused on performing sport activities and reflected a strategy of “just do as I do” - a strategy that created little room for autonomy, even if the findings pointed to some traces of autonomy among the PE teachers in KRI. Considering the findings and the theoretical concept of self-determination theory that highlight students’ autonomy as essential for students’ motivation, integration, wellness, and well-being in PE, our findings suggest that new perspectives and practices are needed among teachers in KRI to ensure autonomy in PE teaching. Paper The ‘Good!’, the ‘Great!’ and the ‘brilliant!’: Exclamations and Teacher Artwork in Volleyball Teaching 1: Malmö University, Sweden; 2: Uppsala University Presenting Author:Over the past two decades, research in physical education (PE) has increasingly emphasized learning‑oriented perspectives that attend to the why, what, and how of teaching movement in school contexts (Larsson, 2021). This shift has broadened the field by incorporating perspectives on movement learning (Barker, Bergentoft & Nyberg, 2017), meaningful PE experiences (Beni, Fletcher & Ni Chróinín, 2018), and aesthetic experience (Maivorsdotter & Lundvall, 2009). Despite this expansion, ball games continue to be criticized for reproducing traditional sport discourses that emphasize competition rather than educational purposes such as equity, inclusion, or the cultivation of movement capability (Mustell, 2025). A substantial body of research highlights the complexity of teacher communication during PE lessons. Teachers often rely on both direct teaching behaviors (e.g., explicit instructions or demonstrations) and indirect behaviors such as tone of voice, encouragement, and intonation (Jung & Choi, 2016). However, studies suggest that PE teachers frequently struggle to articulate learning objectives in ball‑game contexts (Modell & Gerdin, 2022) and tend to prioritize student activity over movement quality (Larsson & Nyberg, 2017). Research on communicative practices in PE has also shown that teachers’ motivational cues (such as “go faster!”) can unintentionally reinforce a governmental logic privileging activity levels over conceptual or aesthetic understanding (Öhman & Quennerstedt, 2008). Within this broader research landscape, spontaneous teacher exclamations, such as “good!”, “great!”, and “brilliant!”, constitute a pervasive yet under‑examined feature of PE teaching. In the lesson analyzed in this study, the teacher expressed 228 such exclamations within 60 minutes. Rather than dismiss these exclamations as incidental “cheering,” the present study situates them as potentially meaningful elements of PE pedagogy. The study has two central aims. First, it seeks to describe and explain how teacher exclamations function transactionally during a volleyball lesson and how they contribute to the co‑creation of purposeful learning contexts shared by teacher and students. Second, it aims to identify how exclamations support student learning of PE content and foster aesthetic sensibilities related to ball‑game participation. By examining exclamations as part of a dynamic instruction–action–expression structure, the study conceptualizes them not as peripheral comments but as pedagogical acts that help shape the rhythmic, emotional, and meaning‑making dimensions of PE lessons. The study is grounded in John Dewey’s concept of aesthetics, developed in Art as Experience (1934/1980), where aesthetics refers not to beauty but to the quality of experience—how individuals meaningfully engage with their environment on emotional, cognitive, and embodied levels. From this perspective, learning emerges through organism–environment transactions in which actions and perceptions form a unified, purposeful whole. Building on Dewey, Garrison (2010) characterizes teaching as an aesthetic and ethical endeavour, in which teachers “call into existence” the educational good they seek for their students. Teaching is therefore not merely the transmission of content; it is a creative, relational act through which teachers shape environments that enable shared, meaningful experiences. Applied to ball‑game teaching in PE, this framework highlights that teachers must do more than provide technical instruction. They must stage purposeful contexts, drawing students’ attention to moments where they can respond aesthetically and emotionally to unfolding play. Within this study, teacher exclamations such as “good!”, “great!”, and “brilliant!” are conceptualized as micro‑actions that help call specific qualities of experience into existence. These exclamations operate as expressive cues that orient students toward the intended purpose of the activity and contribute to the shared construction of a cohesive learning environment. In this sense, PE teachers act as artists working with students’ experiences as their medium, co‑creating the aesthetic and pedagogical contours of the lesson Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employs a video ethnographic approach, a method well suited for analysing embodied interaction, instructional communication, and moment to moment pedagogical decision making in physical education settings. Video ethnography enables repeated viewing, close transcription, and nuanced interpretation of events that unfold rapidly during lessons, making it particularly valuable for studying PE teachers’ expressive communicative actions (Heath, Hindmarsh & Luff, 2010). The empirical material was originally collected within a broader research project focused on understanding students’ learning of embodied, practical knowledge in PE. Data collection took place over approximately five school terms, involving the recording of around 50 lessons, and followed the ethical guidelines of the Swedish Research Council (2017), including informed consent and ongoing procedural consent through sustained dialogue with participants. Ethical considerations also included building trusting relationships with students over time, consistent with established methodological recommendations in qualitative and video based research (Heath et al., 2010). To document the complexity of teacher–student interactions, the study used a stationary camera capturing the full gym environment, as well as a wireless GoPro camera mounted on the teacher’s chest, providing direct access to the teacher’s visual and auditory perspective. Wearable cameras such as GoPro devices have been successfully used in previous educational and visual social science research to capture situated perspectives and naturally occurring communication (Chalfen, 2014; Andersson & Risberg, 2018, 2019). This dual camera arrangement allowed the researchers to analyse the teacher’s verbal exclamations alongside non verbal dimensions such as gaze, movement rhythm, proximity, and spatial positioning. During initial reviews, the research team noted a striking pattern: in a 60 minute volleyball lesson, the teacher used 228 positive exclamations, averaging four per minute. These were initially dismissed as sport like cheering but were reconsidered two years later as analytically meaningful, prompting a systematic re analysis focusing explicitly on their pedagogical function. This re analysis aligns with recommendations for recursive, interpretive work in qualitative video studies (Goldman, 2007). The analytic process unfolded over monthly research meetings spanning one year, supplemented by individual viewings where each researcher engaged with the video independently. Three guiding questions framed the analysis: What do we see? What do we hear? How can we understand this? Through iterative examination, the researchers identified transactional patterns linking instruction, student action, and teacher exclamation. Particular attention was paid to timing, tone of voice, spatial movement, and interactional positioning, consistent with earlier work on embodied teaching (Andersson & Risberg, 2018; 2019). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The methodological approach and theoretical framework made it possible to interpret teacher exclamations not as isolated utterances but as integral components of a dynamic instructional ecology. In so doing, the PE teacher’s frequent use of exclamations such as “good!”, “great!”, and “brilliant!” were reintepreted through a detailed analysis of their pedagogical function during a volleyball lesson. The findings demonstrate that exclamations are not merely motivational techniques or connected to a sport discourse behavior, rather, they act as meaningful tools within the art of teaching physical education. Through their tone, timing, and contextual placement, these exclamations actively contribute to the creation of purposeful learning environments, supporting students’ engagement with PE content on individual, local, and general levels. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of examining micro expressive teaching behaviors, which have often been overlooked in research focused on instructional clarity or motivational strategies. The findings suggest that exclamations can support the development of aesthetic sensibilities in ball game contexts, offering students opportunities to experience fulfillment, coherence, and purpose in their actions. However, such pedagogical artistry requires teachers to navigate complex tensions involving sport logics, students’ cultural dispositions, and the need for clearly articulated learning goals. Overall, the study highlights exclamations as integral elements of PE teachers’ expressive repertoires and as creative tools that help structure meaningful, aesthetic learning experiences during ball game activities. Paper With What Do We Break the `Silence`? The Art of Teaching in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) Oslo metropolitan University, Norway Presenting Author:The mandate of teacher education is to prepare future teachers for the complex realities of school teaching, and teacher education is widely regarded as playing a crucial role in enhancing the overall quality of education (Korthagen, 2016). Education always involves teaching. And as Biesta (2019) underlines teaching is about bringing something to the educational situation that was not already there - something the students were not asking for going into the education situation. Biesta (2013) emphasizes the importance of risk in pedagogical practices to awaken students for the world – in other words, education needs to break the silence. However, the silence in PETE seems to be continuous. Research on Physical education teacher education (PETE) documents that PETE education (often) confirms rather than challenges the students’ understandings of physical education (PE) and what the teachers role is and should be (Mordal-Moen & Green, 2012; Østerlie & Kristensen, 2023). The PETE program`s seems to have limited impact on PETE students` established beliefs (Mordal-Moen & Green, 2012; Philpot et al., 2020), even though their perceptions of their role as a PE teacher seems to change during the PETE program (Westlie et al., 2024), many PETE students struggle to open themselves to new and alternative ways of practicing and thinking about PE (Hordvik et al., 2020). In line with this, PETE program traditionally has focused on “physical-education-as-sport-technique” (Kirk 201) as the dominant idea of the idea of PE, which emphasizes the technical, reproductive and quantitative approach in PE in general and PETE in particular. Quennerstedt (2019) underlines that PE becomes a drama, where both teachers and students work to keep up the appearance of “effective” PE – trying to uphold something that should look like PE in terms of what and how. Moreover, research highlights PETE students’ athletic background and how it continues to be rewarded in PE (Aasland et al., 2019; Evans, 2004; Mordal-Moen & Green, 2012). Hence, many students begin the PETE program without any experience of failing – not mastering – activities done in PE. In this presentation and in the context of PETE education, I invite pushing and breaking the boundaries with which PETE educators and students are comfortable. By borrowing Nancy Stark Smith's concept of "Failing successfully" I discuss how we can break the silence of PE and PETE and how a focus on the fear of failure and risk-taking can become a significant asset for gaining teacher competence in PETE. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper presents findings from multiple teaching and research projects by the author that investigates preservice teachers’ professional development in PETE. All studies are qualitative with data material consisting of PETE students reflections as they are challenged with new perspectives during the PETE program, such as FlashMob (Langnes & Rustad, 2019), creating break[danc]ing series (Fjogstad Langnes & Rustad, 2024), Hobby horsing (Porsanger et al, 2026), Forum theater (Walseth et al in review), peer teaching (Langnes et al in review) . A thematic analysis was used in a process of constant comparison. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes to research on how physical education teacher education can support the professional development of pre-service teachers. The research highlights the importance of incorporating new perspectives in PETE programs that generate emotional experiences, to facilitate reflection and challenge perceptions rooted in a traditional understanding of PE. Paper A Cartography of an Academic Life: A 35-Year Self-Study University of Auckland, New Zealand Presenting Author:This self-study examines my 35-year career as an academic working within a research-intensive university that has been progressively reshaped by neoliberal logics of performativity, competition, and managerial control. Over three decades, I have inhabited the ambient atmosphere of precarity marked by restructurings, redundancies, and the encroachment of audit culture. These experiences have produced both vulnerability and creativity; moments of capture by bureaucratic apparatuses and moments of escape through relational, intellectual, and pedagogical lines of flight (Deleuze & Guattari, 1987). Theoretically, the study draws on Deleuze and Guattari’s (1987) concepts of the apparatus of capture, plane of consistency, and rhizome to re-imagine how an academic life is continually territorialised and deterritorialised within a neoliberal institution. The apparatus of capture describes how universities codify and measure diverse forms of academic work through rankings, metrics, and performance-based funding (such as New Zealand’s PBRF). The plane of consistency offers a counter-image of becoming; an open, relational field where new assemblages, collaborations, and ideas can emerge despite institutional pressures. The rhizome provides a metaphor for mapping the unpredictable, non-linear, and proliferating pathways of an academic career: connections made, ruptures endured, and creative survivals enacted. As a self-study of teacher education practice (S-STEP) (LaBoskey, 2004; Ovens & Fletcher, 2014), this project extends the methodology by interrogating the material and political conditions under which Physical Education Teacher Educators themselves labour. While much self-study research has explored identity, pedagogy, and reflection, this project situates those concerns within a broader analysis of precarity, understood as both a structural condition and an existential experience of contingency, vulnerability, and care. Following Dewey (1938), self-study here is not conceived as a bounded reflection on practice but a process of engaging in a “continuous mapping” that traces how self, practice, and context co-evolve over time. Aim and Objectives The central aim was to examine how precarity, as a defining feature of the neoliberal university, shapes and reshapes the academic self over time. Specifically, the study asks:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Framed within S-STEP’s commitment to studying one’s own teacher-education practice (LaBoskey; Russell, 2008; Kitchen, 2023) and recent syntheses (Pithouse-Morgan, 2022), this autoethnographic self-study (Hamilton, 2008, 2021) traces a 35-year academic life. Over my career I have accumulated extensive personal and institutional archives such as teaching portfolios, emails, policy documents, meeting notes, and reflective journals. These materials provide a longitudinal data set tracing the intensification of audit culture and its impact on professional identity. Participants and data sources. While the primary participant is myself, the inquiry acknowledges the relational nature of academic life. Correspondence and interviews with colleagues, students, and professional networks constitute relational data (Boylorn & Orbe, 2014). Publicly available institutional texts (strategic plans, restructuring reports) are treated as contextual artefacts that mediate experience. Data analysis. Analysis proceeded through three iterative stages: 1. Mapping apparatuses of capture - identifying how managerial and policy mechanisms codified my work (metrics, PBRF rounds, restructuring cycles). 2. Tracing planes of consistency - noting spaces and relations that sustained practice: mentorships, communities of inquiry, collaborative research, and acts of care. 3. Following lines of flight - attending to creative ruptures: shifts in research direction, adoption of post-qualitative methodologies, and experimental teaching practices that deterritorialised institutional norms. The analysis employs Deleuzian cartography (Bonta & Protevi, 2004) as both method and metaphor, producing a map of becoming rather than a chronological timeline. Narrative fragments, reflective vignettes, and institutional texts are layered to depict intensities, breaks, and emergent connections. Trustworthiness is supported through peer dialogue with a critical friend familiar with self-study and qualitative inquiry who reviewed interpretations for resonance rather than “validity.” Ethical considerations include maintaining confidentiality of institutional actors and framing critique as systemic rather than personal. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Although the study is ongoing, several insights have emerged: 1. Precarity as durational condition. Rather than a temporary state, precarity has been experienced as a constant background rhythm that shaped my teaching, relationships, and identity. 2. Apparatuses of capture as pedagogical force. Audit mechanisms such as PBRF and teaching evaluations have reconstituted what counts as valuable academic work. They recalibrate ‘what counts’ in performances of productivity. 3. Planes of consistency as spaces of relational survival. Across three decades, continuity has been sustained through communities of practice: collaborative research groups and mentoring relationships. These have operated as refuges that allow scholarly energy to circulate beyond managerial enclosures. 4. Lines of flight as creative scholarship. Episodes of deterritorialization - adopting post-qualitative inquiry, engaging with new materialism, or developing socially just pedagogies – have functioned as lines of flight. They represent movements of becoming that exceed the capture of metrics, reconnecting scholarship to ethical and affective commitments. 5. Self-study as continuous mapping. The act of mapping is itself a method of survival - a way to render visible the shifting assemblages of power, desire, and relation that compose academic life. In this sense, S-STEP becomes a technology of care: an ongoing practice of attending to one’s becoming in context. Conclusion: This self-study shows that precarity is not a temporary condition of academic life but a durational one, produced through pedagogical apparatuses of capture that recalibrate what counts as valuable work. Across three decades, survival has been sustained through planes of consistency (relational spaces where scholarly energy circulates beyond managerial enclosures) and through methodological lines of flight that reconnect inquiry to ethical and affective commitments. Conceived as continuous mapping, self-study emerges here as a practice of survival and care: an ongoing attentiveness to becoming within shifting assemblages of power, relation, and possibility.
