Paper Educational aspirations and institutional realities: An Analysis of Alignment and Mismatch in Youth Pathways AAB College, Kosovo Presenting Author:Topic and objective Young people are urged to set high standards for their education and careers throughout Europe. However, these goals frequently materialize in institutional settings characterized by structural constraints and unequal resource access (Cieslik & Simpson, 2013; Walther, 2006). The primary objective of this research is to evaluate how institutional constraints in Kosovo influence, and often distort, youth aspirations and their psychological agency. The research explores the alignment and mismatch between young people's educational and career goals and the institutional realities of the labor market and education systems. By examining young people’s lived experiences, perceptions, and narratives across diverse educational and employment pathways, the research seeks to uncover the meanings and perceived gaps between aspirations and institutional contexts. The educational and professional aspirations of young people, the institutional realities they encounter, and the cognitive-motivational processes influencing their career development (SCCT) are the three primary analytical pillars of this study. This analytical method enables us to comprehend not only what young people desire and idealize for their future (aspirations), but also the opportunities and limitations that the labor market, educational system, institutions, policies, and socioeconomic conditions present (institutional realities). Research questions The study is guided by one central question and two supporting sub-questions: RQ1: RQ2: How do young people articulate their educational and professional aspirations and imagined future pathways? RQ3: Theoretical Framework: The study takes a multifaceted approach by synthesizing Bourdieu's Theory of Capital (Bourdieu, 1986, as cited in Reay, 2019), the Capability Approach (Sen, 1999; Nussbaum, 2011), and Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) (Lent et al., 1994). Bourdieu’s Theory of Social and Cultural Capital - According to Thatcher et al. (2015), Bourdieu's Theory of Capital (1986) asserts that aspirations are influenced by social, cultural, and economic capital. This study looks at how inherited resources, such as parental education, affect career goals, overcoming institutional obstacles, and social mobility through the lens of "habitus" (Semo & Karmel, 2011). Thus, systemic mismatches are seen as the result of uneven capital distribution and a lack of institutional support. The Capability Approach (Sen, 1999; Nussbaum, 2011) assesses individuals' "real opportunities" to fulfill ambitions, emphasizing their genuine flexibility to attain particular "functionings" rather than mere access to resources (Walker & Fongwa, 2017). This study uses the framework to identify how institutional barriers—such as program scarcity, lack of support, or financial obstacles—and structural inequities (gender, location, disability) prevent youth from converting potential into true opportunity. Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) - The study uses SCCT to close the gap between realized capabilities and structural capital (Lent et al., 1994). This theory focuses on outcome expectations (beliefs about the results of their efforts) and self-efficacy (youths' confidence in their capacity to succeed). It clarifies why some young people "downsize" their goals in spite of their potential. Systemic mismatches in Kosovo reduce self-efficacy through negative feedback loops. By synthesizing Bourdieu’s Theory of Capital with Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) and the Capability Approach, the research innovatively bridges sociological and psychological perspectives creating a multi-dimensional framework to analyze how institutional mismatches in Kosovo fundamentally reshape youth agency, self-efficacy, and the actual freedom to realize aspirations. International dimension: By incorporating these local findings into the overarching EDU-LAB framework, the research enhances European-level discussions on constructing more resilient transition systems that correspond with the actual aspirations and varied life conditions of today's youth. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methods: This research is undertaken as a qualitative case study within the Horizon Europe EDU-LAB project, concentrating primarily on the transition pathways of youth in Kosovo. The methodology adheres to the standardized WP4 framework to ensure cross-case comparability while accommodating local nuances. Research design and Case selection: The research utilizes a comprehensive, cross-comparative analysis centered on Prishtina location in Kosovo, conducted by Local Research Teams (LRT). These locations were chosen to show the country's varied socio-economic dynamics, making it possible to fully map both normal and atypical (non-linear) paths. Sample (Participants and recruitment): The sample includes young people aged 15–30, categorized into four specific groups to capture diverse transition experiences: - Students in general and vocational education; - Students in Higher Education; - Employed youth (including those working outside their field of study). - NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training). To date, the Kosovo local research team has conducted 11 focus groups via Microsoft Teams, each comprising 5–8 participants, totaling 70 individuals. This sample of youth from Prishtina reflects diverse socio-economic backgrounds and serves as a case study within the broader EDU-LAB project, providing comprehensive insight into local transition experiences. Research techniques and Data collection instruments (WP4 Tools): Following the EDU-LAB protocol, the Kosovo case uses a coordinated set of instruments designed to capture both individual "aspirations" and structural "barriers", as follows: - Semi-structured Focus groups (FGs) interviews: These served as the primary tools for identifying the "habitus" and aspirations of youth, as well as shared institutional barriers. - Coordinated FG interviews protocol: A tool developed with WP4 partners to standardize the identification of "conversion factors"—the local conditions that help or hinder the realization of aspirations. Data Analysis: The analysis follows the qualitative data analysis spiral (Creswell, 2012; Creswell & Guetterman, 2019), moving from raw data to a multi-perspective synthesis that situates localized Kosovo findings within the broader European EDU-LAB project framework. Procedure: From Microsoft Teams the digital transcriptions were imported into MAXQDA software, which served as the central platform for organizing, segmenting, and summarizing the data, ensuring a rigorous and transparent audit trail. Following Creswell’s inductive approach, we analyze MAXQDA summaries to capture youth experiences in Kosovo. We code aspirations (Bourdieu), motivation drivers (SCCT), and conversion factors (Sen), then develop themes of Alignment and Mismatch by connecting psychological factors with Kosovo’s labor market realities. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The anticipated results of this study will offer a critical mapping of Kosovo's youth transition landscape, emphasizing the discrepancy between institutional realities and idealized aspirations. The study expects three main results from the data collected from 70 participants in Prishtina location using a multi-perspective analysis: 1. Identification of Systemic Mismatches - The analysis will reveal systemic mismatches where Kosovo’s education and labor market fail to convert youth cultural capital into stable careers. Using SCCT, it shows how structural barriers—like limited vocational programs and weak career guidance—cause a crisis of agency, pushing youth into non-linear paths and lowering their future expectations. This shifts blame from individuals to institutional failures. 2. Mapping "Non-Linear" Resilience - The creation of illustrative narratives detailing how Kosovar youth deal with disruptions in their education and forced career changes will be a key result. Using the Capability Approach, the study will show how local "conversion factors" and financial limitations restrict young people's actual freedom to follow their dreams. These stories will give the Balkan region's NEET and underemployed youth statistical trends a human face. 3. Policy Implications for European Equity - The study will ultimately provide evidence-based recommendations for enhancing institutional support mechanisms. The conclusion will assert that to attain educational parity in Kosovo, policy must transition from a standardized framework to one that acknowledges and facilitates non-linear pathways. Paper Nature, Nurture, and Culture: Unraveling the Global Relationship Between Parenting Styles and Academic Achievement through Meta-Analysis ***WITHDRAWN*** Institute of Curriculum and Instruction, East China Normal University, China, People's Republic of Presenting Author:The debate sparked by Amy Chua’s Tiger Mother narrative extends beyond parenting controversy to a central question in developmental and cross-cultural psychology: are the effects of parenting on children’s academic outcomes universal or culturally contingent? From a universalist perspective, core parenting dimensions—positive (e.g., authoritative, warm, responsive) and negative (e.g., authoritarian, harsh, neglectful)—exert broadly consistent effects on achievement through fundamental socialization and cognitive mechanisms. Conversely, a cultural-relativist view treats parenting as a socially constructed practice, with behaviors interpreted and evaluated differently depending on cultural norms and institutional contexts. What is supportive in one society may be intrusive or ineffective in another. Despite decades of research and meta-analyses confirming a general association between parenting and academic performance, critical gaps remain. Existing syntheses often estimate average effects without systematically examining how national cultural values moderate these relationships. Moreover, few studies assess whether cultural moderation differs for positive versus negative parenting, or whether culture retains influence after accounting for socioeconomic development and demographic factors. This meta-analysis addresses these gaps, investigating the asymmetric moderating roles of cultural dimensions on parenting–achievement links while controlling for structural variables, moving beyond a polarized universalist–relativist framework toward an integrative, ecologically grounded understanding of parenting’s role in academic success. Literature Review Extant research consistently links parenting styles to academic outcomes (e.g., Brown & Iyengar, 2008; Masud et al., 2015; Pinquart, 2016). Positive parenting—warm, responsive, autonomy-supportive, and authoritative—promotes achievement by fostering intrinsic motivation, self-regulation, and adaptive learning strategies. Negative parenting—harsh, psychologically controlling, or authoritarian—undermines performance by increasing stress and frustrating basic psychological needs (Pinquart, 2016; Spera, 2005; Tan et al., 2025). Cross-cultural evidence complicates this picture. The strength and even direction of effects vary across contexts: authoritative parenting is more strongly linked to achievement in individualistic Western societies(Park & Holloway, 2013), whereas in some collectivist Asian contexts, certain authoritarian practices may align with normative expectations of obedience and discipline. These patterns suggest parenting efficacy is filtered through cultural meanings (Leung et al., 1998). Hofstede’s (2011) multidimensional framework provides a lens for theorizing this moderation. Dimensions such as Individualism–Collectivism, Power Distance, Long-Term Orientation, and Indulgence–Restraint shape how children perceive parental authority, autonomy support, and warmth. Prior meta-analyses hint at cultural moderation but are limited by single-dimension focus or failure to separate cultural effects from correlated socioeconomic factors. Parenting also interacts with structural conditions. Macro-level indicators (e.g., GDP per capita, Human Development Index) and demographics (e.g., parental role, child’s developmental stage) influence how family practices affect outcomes. Socioeconomic development may buffer or substitute for parental input, while developmental stage determines sensitivity to parenting (Tucker-Drob et al., 2014). Because cultural values often correlate with economic development, multivariate approaches are necessary to isolate culture’s unique moderating role—a complexity rarely addressed in previous reviews (Zhao et akl., 2024). Previous research and Research Question Prior meta-analyses have focused on average parenting–achievement effects, often neglecting cultural contingencies, differential moderation of positive versus negative parenting, and the role of socioeconomic and demographic factors. These gaps underscore the need for a comprehensive meta-analysis examining how culture and structural conditions jointly shape parenting’s impact, motivating the present study’s four research questions: RQ1: What is the overall global relationship between positive and negative parenting styles and academic achievement? RQ2: To what extent do cultural values moderate the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement? How do cultural values moderating effect differ for positive versus negative parenting styles? RQ3: Beyond culture, how do socioeconomic indicators and demographic variables independently moderate the strength of the relationship between parenting styles and academic achievement? RQ4: When considering cultural dimensions and structural factors simultaneously, to what extent is the role of culture independent of economic development levels? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The methodological approach for this study was a meta-analysis, designed to systematically integrate quantitative findings from existing research on the links between parenting styles and academic achievement across diverse settings. The review process rigorously adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines to ensure transparency and reproducibility. An extensive literature search was executed across four major scholarly databases: Web of Science, Scopus, ProQuest, and ERIC. This search employed a structured strategy combining keywords related to core constructs. The scope was limited to peer-reviewed journal articles available in English, with publication dates extending up to July 2025. Following the identification and removal of duplicate records, studies were screened sequentially based on their titles, abstracts, and finally full texts against predetermined eligibility criteria. To be included, a study was required to present a quantitative examination of the association between either positive or negative parenting styles and a measure of academic achievement, involve participants from elementary, secondary, or tertiary education levels, and report sufficient statistical data—typically correlation coefficients—to permit the calculation of an effect size. This process culminated in a final sample of 37 studies. A comprehensive coding scheme was developed and applied to extract relevant data from each included study. Two trained coders independently extracted information, achieving a high level of inter-rater reliability. The coded data encompassed basic bibliographic details, the central effect size correlations, and a suite of potential moderator variables. These moderators included national cultural values, operationalized using country scores from Hofstede’s six-dimensional framework; socioeconomic indicators such as GDP per capita and the Human Development Index, obtained from United Nations databases; and key demographic characteristics like student age, educational level, and the type of academic achievement measure used. The statistical analysis was conducted using R software with specialized meta-analysis packages. The extracted correlation coefficients were transformed using Fisher’s Z to stabilize their variance before analysis. The overarching analytical strategy employed a random-effects model to compute summary effect sizes for both positive and negative parenting, acknowledging and modeling the anticipated heterogeneity among studies. To investigate the influence of the coded moderators, a series of mixed-effects models and hierarchical meta-regressions were performed. Furthermore, MASEM was utilized to test a path model while simultaneously evaluating cultural dimensions as moderators. The robustness of the findings was assessed through sensitivity analyses and multiple diagnostic tests for publication bias, including Egger’s regression test and visual inspection of funnel plots. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This meta-analysis offers nuanced insights into the parenting–achievement relationship across cultural contexts. Empirically, it confirms a robust positive association between positive parenting styles—marked by warmth, support, and responsiveness—and academic achievement (r = 0.167), alongside a weaker but consistent negative association for negative parenting styles (r = −0.082). More importantly, the findings reveal an asymmetric pattern of cultural moderation. The benefits of positive parenting are highly culture-sensitive, being significantly shaped by cultural values such as power distance, individualism–collectivism, long-term orientation, and indulgence–restraint. In contrast, the detrimental effects of negative parenting exhibit greater cross-cultural stability, with moderation observed primarily along the masculinity–femininity dimension. The analysis further shows that socioeconomic development indicators (e.g., GDP per capita, HDI) and demographic factors (e.g., parental role, educational level) independently moderate the positive parenting–achievement link. Crucially, however, hierarchical meta-regression and Meta-Analytic Structural Equation Modeling (MASEM) demonstrate that cultural values exert a unique moderating influence beyond economic and demographic factors. This finding challenges simplistic interpretations that conflate cultural effects with levels of socioeconomic development and moves beyond the traditional universalist versus cultural-relativist dichotomy. Theoretically, the results support an integrative, multi-layered framework. Parenting affects academic achievement through intertwined pathways: the effectiveness of positive parenting is culturally contingent, shaped by local norms and value systems, whereas the harms of negative parenting appear to violate more universal psychological needs. This perspective transcends polarized debates—such as the “Tiger Mother” discourse—by recognizing parenting as both culturally embedded and developmentally consequential. Practically, interventions should adopt a dual approach: promoting positive parenting in culturally responsive ways, while addressing negative parenting through broadly shared standards of child well-being. Paper Children’s Naive Economic Theories and Family Economic Socialization: Implications for Educational Action Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy Presenting Author:Economic education is a lifelong process through which citizens develop competences enabling them to make informed decisions, critically understand economic phenomena, and act responsibly within their socio-economic contexts (Fornero & Lo Prete, 2023; Lusardi & Mitchell, 2023). In a complex global context, characterised by rapid economic and technological change and the transfer of financial responsibility to individuals (Amagir et al., 2018; Kaiser & Lusardi, 2024), economic education has become a central focus of international education policies (European Commission/OECD, 2023; OECD, 2020). In Italy, this thematic area was formally introduced as part of the “Citizenship Education” curriculum in 2024: from primary school onwards, children are expected to develop economic competences aimed at individual and social well-being, and at the exercise of active and responsible citizenship (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 2024). However, the implementation of these policies is not always underpinned by a deep understanding of the social, political, economic, and cultural ecosystems in which they are embedded. Children’s economic knowledge often remains marginal in educational debates, still relying on outdated empirical evidence (Berti, 2004). Curricular decisions are frequently made without sufficient consideration of children’s interpretative models of economic phenomena and the everyday practices that stem from them. At the same time, the role of the family, as the primary agency of economic socialisation, is often underestimated, despite its influence in mediating meanings and practices that interact with school-based education (Kardash et al., 2023; Zhao & Zhang, 2020). Moreover, teachers often lack the competences required to address economic education in a reflective and structured manner (Compen et al., 2019; Jayaraman et al., 2022). National and international studies report generally low levels of economic and financial literacy across age groups and contexts (Kaiser & Lusardi, 2024). In Italy, opportunities for initial and in-service teacher education in this field remain limited, increasing the risk that economic education is introduced in a largely formal way, without solid theoretical and methodological foundations. Many teachers lack both disciplinary knowledge in economics and the pedagogical competences needed to design, implement, and assess meaningful learning pathways. Within this framework, a central question emerges, directly addressing the relationship between knowledge and educational action: how can effective educational interventions in the economic domain be promoted if children’s prior knowledge and representations are not understood, if appropriate teaching methods are not critically examined, and if assessment tools sensitive to knowledge-construction processes are lacking? In response to these challenges, the present study investigates primary school children’s naïve economic theories and analyses how family economic socialisation processes contribute to their construction. The study aims to examine how children’s economic knowledge develops in a situated and relational manner, while also providing empirically grounded insights to inform educational policy and support teachers in introducing economic education in epistemologically sound, pedagogically coherent, and developmentally appropriate ways. The study is guided by the following research questions: (RQ1) What naïve economic theories do children aged 6, 8, and 10 hold regarding money and currencies, work and income, and prices and payments? (RQ2) Are there differences in the development of these theories between rural and urban contexts? If so, what are they? (RQ3) How do family economic socialisation processes intertwine with children’s models of economic knowledge? This study conceptualises economic education as a complex process of knowledge construction involving subjects, contexts, and practices (Fornero & Lo Prete, 2023). Children are viewed as knowing subjects, whose naïve economic theories represent situated and contingent forms of bottom-up knowledge production – often invisible within accountability systems, yet crucial for understanding how economic knowledge is interpreted and enacted in educational and social contexts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study was conducted in Northern Italy and involved a stratified sample of 200 primary school children aged 6, 8, and 10 years and one parent for each participating child (N = 200 adults). Families resided in both urban contexts, characterised by greater access to services, and rural contexts, located in mountainous areas with lower population density. The study has an exploratory design and adopts a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative data to capture the complexity of children’s economic knowledge construction and the role of family economic socialisation. Data collection took place in spring 2025. Regarding the qualitative component, children participated in semi-structured focus groups lasting 60 –90 minutes. Focus groups are considered particularly appropriate for research with children, as they foster a psychologically safe environment and encourage spontaneous expression of ideas and peer discussion, while respecting participants’ needs and rhythms (Vogl et al., 2023). During the focus groups, children’s naïve economic theories were explored in relation to money and currencies, work and income, and prices and payments – topics identified as foundational conceptual domains for the development of more advanced economic competences (Amagir et al., 2018; Bernedo-Moreira et al., 2024; European Commission/OECD, 2023). Parents completed an anonymous questionnaire aimed at investigating family economic socialisation processes, focusing on the frequency and modalities of discussing economic issues with their children, the provision and management of pocket money, children’s involvement in everyday economic decisions, and parental representations regarding economic education at school. Qualitative data were analysed using Qualitative Content Analysis (Schreier, 2012), a systematic and flexible method that allows for a rigorous description of the meaning of textual material. The analysis involved the development of a coding frame consisting of concept-driven macro-categories and data-driven subcategories. Reliability and validity were ensured through a pilot test–retest procedure on approximately 40% of the material and by calculating Cohen’s kappa coefficient to assess inter-coder agreement. The analysis also enabled the construction of comparison matrices to highlight similarities and differences in the development of children’s naïve economic theories across age groups and residential contexts. At this stage, descriptive and exploratory analyses were conducted to assess potential differences across groups—associated with selected socio-economic characteristics—and to outline key profiles of family economic socialisation. In addition, multiple correspondence analyses were performed to identify meaningful cut-off points to create categorical classes for selected variables. Subsequently, multivariate analyses will be carried out. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The qualitative analysis shows that children’s naïve economic theories are shaped by both age and context and follow a clear pattern of cognitive development. At six years of age, children display a concrete and strongly normative mode of reasoning, describing money and economic processes mainly through observable features and immediate experiences. By the age of ten, their representations become progressively more articulated and realistic, evolving towards abstract and systemic conceptions of economic phenomena. The living context significantly influences these developmental trajectories, highlighting how children’s economic conceptions are embedded in everyday environments, family socialisation practices, and broader socio-historical conditions. Qualitative analysis shows that children in rural contexts tend to develop more ethically oriented and community-based interpretations, emphasising relational dimensions and shared responsibility, whereas children in urban contexts more often express individualistic and instrumental views, associating money with power, prestige, and personal success. Urban children also demonstrate greater familiarity with digital financial tools, electronic payments, and different currencies, reflecting exposure to more multicultural and economically diversified settings. The findings highlight children as active constructors of economic knowledge and situated actors within contemporary socio-economic contexts. Themes such as cryptocurrencies, digital banking, and cashless payments, largely absent from earlier studies, emerged spontaneously, indicating that naïve economic theories are dynamic and shaped by ongoing economic transformations. This challenges traditional models of economic education that underestimate children’s engagement with complex realities. Quantitative analyses are ongoing. Preliminary results suggest that family economic socialisation processes are significantly associated with parents’ educational level, nationality, income, and economic knowledge. These findings seem to confirm the family’s central role in the unequal transmission of economic competences and the potential reproduction of intergenerational inequalities. Taken together, the results underscore the importance of integrating children’s perspectives and family contexts into the design of equitable and developmentally appropriate economic education policies and practices.
