Paper Intersectionality in Higher Education: Briding the theory-practice gap through challenge-based-learning TU Dortmund University, Germany Presenting Author:Higher education instituions are increasingly tasked with preparing students for unequal and unpredictable social environments (OECD, 2018). This submission proposes intersectionality as a core analytic framework equipping students to critically examine how structural forces shape heterogeneous needs and obligations. It further explores how challenge-based learning, a method widely argued to be suited for preparding students to navigate uncertainty and complex real-world demands, can facilitate student learning about intersectionality as well as the practical application of theoretical knowledge about intersectionality. Intersectionality conceptualizes how multiple social positions interact to shape lived experience and structural inequality (Crenshaw, 1989, 1991), rendering visible both their conscious and unconsious aspects (Collins & Bilge, 2020; Götschel, 2022). It foregrounds patterns of power, oppression and social justice, which can be reinforced or challenged by educational practices. While intersectionality has emerged as prominent framework in the context of higher education in the U.S., much less known about its embeddedness in higher education in other higher education systems across the world. Scholarly debates on how to teach intersectionality in the context of higher education ongoing (InterHEd, 2024; Villa-Nicholas, 2018), which poses challenges for teachers when it comes to select and implement materials and methods for teaching intersectionality. Challenge-based learning (CBL) is an increasingly prominent approach in higher education and is promoted as a means for students to align the acquisition of disciplinary knowledge with the development of transversal competencies while working on authentic societal problems (Gallagher & Savage, 2023). It is characterised by a focus on real-life challenges (Doulougeri et al., 2024) as well as its open process: rather than solving pre-defining problems, challenges need to defined, analysed, and processed independently by students (van den Beemt et al., 2023). Despite growing interest in challenge-based learning as a pedagogical aproach in higher education (Leijon et al., 2022), existing iterature primarily focuses on ist general characteristics, benefits, and implementation challenges and there is limited attention to how it engages social justice frameworks like intersectionality. Based on the above-presented evidence and assumptions, this submission poses the following research questions:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The research questions are addressed by a combination of methodological approaches: A systematic literature review (SLR) paired with reflections of a didactical intervention, both of which were conducted within the scope of a teaching innovation project funded by the German Association for Innovation in Higher Education. In order to systematically assess the state of the art of literature on intersectionality in the context of teaching in higher education, a SLR (Boland et al. 2024) was conducted. This type of literature review „is a systematic, explicit, and reproducible method for identifying, evaluating, and synthesizing the existing body of completed and recorded work produced by researchers, scholars, and practitioners“ (Fink, 2014, p. 3). Following a careful selection process, 13 English- and Germanspeaking journals were screened with a pre-defined set of keywords related to diversity and intersectionality in higher education. The application of the first three out of five steps of the so-called PRISMA-method (Cramarenco et al. 2023), resulted in 227 publications. In a further step, the contents of these publications will be analysed in mode depth in order to be able to provide a trend analysis and a summary of key areas addressed in literature. The didactical intervention was based on the introduction of CBL into a lecture on Diversity and Inclusion Management for fourth-semester bachelor students in a programme for business and economics at a German university. Intersectionality is particularly overlooked in management education (Lo, 2023; Maurel, 2025) – the area in which our intervention was based. A pilot intervention, presenting students with a case, letting them identify challenges and proposing solutions to these, was conducted in June 2025. For the pilot of the didactical intervention, students were presented with a real-life case of a large international construction firm, based on challenges emerging at the intersections of gender, family and care responsibility, and position/function in the company. Materials – a case description and student instructions – were uploaded to an online-learning-platform a week prior to the intervention. Building upon the experiences of this pilot, a second intervention will be implemented in May 2026. In order to address the research questions, we draw on observational data based on reflections with students directly after the intervention as well as continuous discussions among project team members (including student assistants having participated in the intervention) throughout the preparation, implementation, and reflection of the intervention. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Preliminary insights of the SLR suggest that intersectionality is often used as a buzzword and tends to be addressed from a theoretical or normative perspective. Empirical studies are rare and studies tend to focus on single dimensions of diversity rather than addressing the complex interections of dimensions as required from a truly intersectional perspective. Further analysis will be conductd to show how literature addresses intersectionality in teaching across different higher education systems, which thematic areas are prevalent, and how this has changed over time. Students worked on the presented case during a lecture session for 70 minutes, followed by pitches of challenges and solutions and a plenary discussion. The main challenge encountered by teachers in the preparation of the intervention was the lack of regular attendance of students, which did not allow for challenge-based learning to be spread across several lecture session. As a result, there was little time to identify challenges and solutions, which seemed particularly challenging for groups with stronger degrees of diversity (gender, country of origin, study programme, work experience). Students positively commented on the autonomy they experienced and reported to have developed stronger sensibility for the intersectional realities of employees in different types of companies. Drawing on additional data from the second intervention in the summer semester, our presentation at ECER will outline and critically reflect on the didactical intervention, focusing on the roles and challenges of teachers in the preparation and facilitation of the intervention as well as student and teacher perspectives regarding the potentials and challenges of CBL in applying knowledge about intersectionality. Paper The Space as a Pedagogical Partner: Teacher Centrality, Instructional Strategies, and Self-Regulated Learning in Flexible Learning Spaces The Open University Of Israel, Israel Presenting Author:In recent years, higher education has sought to promote learner-centered instructional approaches that emphasize active student participation and learner responsibility for the learning process (Saad & Abdullah, 2025). These approaches aim to develop essential student skills such as creative thinking, problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration (Bhardwaj et al., 2025). A prominent means of advancing these goals in higher education is the integration of Flexible Learning Spaces (FLS) (Chen et al., 2024). A FLS is a large, open physical environment characterized by diverse, mobile, and modular furniture, multiple learning areas, and transparent or movable walls (Saur & Ulleberg, 2025). These design features enable adaptable learning configurations and support a range of teaching and learning practices. Such spaces often incorporate advanced technologies, such as multiple large screens, virtual reality headsets, augmented reality objects, and immersive walls, which support diverse learning experiences (Hu et al., 2025). Recent studies have identified multiple benefits of teaching and learning in FLS. Accordingly, the physical layout and collaborative configuration support instructional practices that emphasize active learning and higher-order thinking over procedural instruction (Thomas, 2025). In addition, the spatial design supports learner autonomy, creativity, and responsibility for learning processes (Cardellino & Deed, 2024), while the diverse affordances of FLS enable varied instructional approaches and adaptation to learners’ needs (Charteris et al., 2025). Furthermore, the range of seating and learning options in FLS allows learners to choose appropriate workspaces during individual learning activities (Grannäs et al., 2025). Meanwhile open FLS, supported by collaborative furniture, digital tools, and active learning practices, enhances peer and teacher-student interactions and promotes a sense of community (Basdogan & Birdwell, 2024). Moreover, learner-centered use of FLS is associated with a more positive emotional classroom climate (Alakoski et al., 2025). However, teachers may still adopt traditional, teacher-centered approaches in FLS, underscoring the importance of pedagogical orientations and professional development for realizing their potential (Alakoski, 2024). In addition, high spatial flexibility may confuse learners, highlighting the need for pedagogical and emotional support to enable effective use of the space (Halidane et al., 2024). To examine teaching and learning processes in FLS, this study draws on several theoretical models: Illeris’ (2003) learning model is used to conceptualize learning as a process comprising three interrelated dimensions: The cognitive dimension refers to the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and understanding; the emotional dimension relates to motivation, feelings, and mental energy involved in learning; and the social dimension concerns interaction, collaboration, and communication. In parallel, the teacher centrality framework (Yondler & Blau, 2023) conceptualizes teaching along a continuum of instructional control and student autonomy: At the Sage level, the teacher provides explicit instruction and retains high control over learning; At the Facilitator level, the teacher structures activities and guides engagement; At the Guide level, the teacher supports inquiry and experiential learning with increased student responsibility; Finally, at the Partner level, responsibility for learning is shared through teacher-student collaboration. Alongside this, Pintrich’s (2004) model conceptualizes self-regulated learning as a multidimensional process comprising several components. Cognitive regulation encompasses learners’ use of cognitive and metacognitive strategies; Motivational and emotional regulation addresses the management of motivation and emotional states during learning; Behavioral regulation focuses on the organization of effort, time, and help-seeking behaviors; and the Contextual regulation concerns learners’ ability to structure and adapt their learning environment. Building on these frameworks, this study examines teachers’ role perspectives within FLS, the instructional strategies they employ, and the learning dimensions reflected in both their role perspectives and instructional practices. It also explores the degree of teacher centrality reflected in role perspectives and enacted strategies, as well as the extent and types of self-regulated learning encouraged among students. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed a multiple case study design (Yin, 2018), grounded in the principles of the mixed-methods paradigm (Creswell, 2021). This approach enabled an in-depth examination of teaching and learning processes within FLS across diverse academic contexts. Data collection comprised 42 semi-structured interviews and 25 non-participant observations conducted in higher education FLS. Participants were lecturers who taught single or recurring lessons in these environments. They represented a wide range of disciplinary fields and taught both undergraduate and graduate students. Moreover, Participants varied in their teaching experience, allowing for the inclusion of diverse pedagogical perspectives. The FLS examined in this study varied in their physical and technological characteristics. Specifically, spatial designs included open learning environments with multiple learning areas, alongside collaborative tables, diverse seating options such as couches and beanbags, and combinations of movable and fixed furniture. In addition, technological resources differed across spaces and included multiple shared displays, interactive whiteboards, immersive walls, interactive surfaces, as well as augmented reality artifacts and virtual reality headsets. The semi-structured interviews focused on lecturers’ role perspectives in FLS and whether these differed from their perceived roles in traditional learning environments. In addition, participants were asked to describe the teaching and learning strategies they employed in FLS and to reflect on how, in their view, the spatial environment shaped their instructional practices and learning processes. Triangulating the interviews with non-participant observations enabled close examination of enacted teaching and learning processes during actual classroom activities. These observations provided insights into the pedagogical value of FLS, as well as challenges encountered by both instructors and student. All interviews were audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim. In the interviews, the unit of analysis was the individual statement (and not the participant), while in the observations it was the observer’s description of specific instructional events (and not the lesson). Data analysis followed a combined bottom-up and top-down approach. First, bottom-up coding was conducted using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006, 2019) to identify recurring patterns and emergent analytical categories (e.g., teaching and learning strategies). Subsequently, top-down coding aligned the data with predefined theoretical frameworks, including Illeris’ (2003) learning model addressing cognitive, emotional, and social dimensions; the teacher centrality framework (Yondler & Blau, 2023), examining instructional control and student autonomy; and Pintrich’s (2004) model of self-regulated learning, distinguishing between different regulation processes. To ensure inter-rater reliability, 25% of the interview and observation data were independently coded by a second rater. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings indicate that teachers’ role perceptions and instructional strategies in FLS showed similar patterns of teacher centrality. The Facilitator role was most prevalent, emphasizing the development of learners’ skills-particularly inquiry and self-directed learning-through active and collaborative practices. Partner-oriented perceptions and strategies were also evident, reflected in attentiveness to students’ perspectives alongside the use of peer teaching and peer feedback. This pattern aligns with prior research indicating that the physical design of FLS supports learner-centered and active learning practices (Thomas, 2025). Importantly, although less prevalent, Sage-oriented perceptions and strategies were also identified, reflecting concern with students’ understanding of disciplinary content and enacted through brief whole-class explanations preceding independent or group work. This finding is consistent with prior research highlighting the need for pedagogical guidance in open FLS (Halidane et al., 2024). With respect to learning dimensions, both teachers’ role perceptions and instructional strategies primarily emphasized the cognitive dimension, focusing on the development of learning skills and active and collaborative learning. Emotional and social dimensions were present but less prominent, reflected mainly in attention to learners’ emotions, social interaction, and community building. This pattern aligns with prior studies indicating that open and collaborative learning environments support emotional and social learning (Basdogan & Birdwell, 2024), while underscoring the need for professional development to realize the pedagogical potential of FLS (Alakoski, 2024). Finally, high levels of self-regulated learning emerged across interviews and observations. The following regulation types were identified: contextual regulation (choosing where to sit and whom to consult), behavioral regulation (task pacing and progress management), and cognitive regulation (working individually or collaboratively), alongside two forms extending beyond Pintrich’s (2003) original framework-social regulation (selecting learning partners) and performance regulation (choosing product formats). Paper Inclusive Didactic Spatiality: Reconceptualizing Inclusive Education through Continental Didactics Södertörn University, Sweden Presenting Author:The research presented in this paper originates in my doctoral dissertation Inclusive Didactic Dimensions – A phenomenological study of teachers’ teaching from the perspective of upper secondary school students (Björkman 2025). The study is situated in Sweden but also in an international educational context marked by social complexity and intense discussion about inclusion and learning in schools (Ainscow, Booth et al. 2020). The overarching research question of the dissertation examined how inclusive teaching is experienced from students’ perspectives, where inclusion is understood in a broad sense as relevant to all discriminated groups (Ainscow & Messiou 2017), and teaching is defined as all intentional pedagogical work carried out by teachers in interaction with students (Klafki 1997). Responding to European and international calls to move beyond policy-driven or technical accounts of inclusion (Florian 2019), the thesis and this paper conceptualize inclusion as inherently didactic. Such a perspective enables teachers to articulate the subtle yet consequential teaching choices through which inclusion and exclusion are continuously formed, and to act reflectively and responsively in educational situations characterized by unpredictability and complexity. In line with Frohn (2024), inclusion is therefore approached as a didactic phenomenon, echoing Korsgaard and Mortensen’s (2017) call to ask educational questions about inclusion rather than inclusive questions about education, not treating it as something added to teaching. The findings align with such calls from the research community for a shift from fragmented to holistic approaches, showing that students experience inclusion as woven into all dimensions of teachers’ teaching, rather than as an additional or compensatory practice. Inclusion is perceived as present, or absent, in every teaching act: a gesture, an instruction, a glance, or a choice of content. Each act carries the potential for inclusion or exclusion. Based on these findings, the paper addresses a theoretically oriented research question of relevance to current educational debates: How can inclusive education be conceptualized as a didactic phenomenon, using didactic theory as a professional language for understanding and articulating inclusive teaching when it’s often questioned, in both society and schools. The theoretical framework is grounded in the continental European tradition of Didaktik, which functions as the central analytical perspective of the study. In particular, the framework draws on Klafki’s concept of Allgemeinbildung (2000) and his critical-constructive didactics. Within this tradition, general education is understood as inherently political and emancipatory, aiming to support students’ self-determination, solidarity, and capacity for democratic participation - capacities that become especially vital in times of societal uncertainty and contested futures. This orientation closely aligns with international understandings of inclusive education as a matter of equity, participation, and social justice (Barton 2006). General didactics is thus understood as providing a conceptual language for examining how inclusive teaching responds to emerging social and individual needs. In the empirical material, students describe inclusion both as a positive atmosphere and as a sense of “we” created by the teacher, where the shared learning process becomes more important than fears of “not knowing” or “not fitting in.” These descriptions align with the understanding of teaching in general didactics as a holistic, formative, ethical, and political practice grounded in the question of why teachers teach. This prompts the question of how a didactic “why,” expressed through an intention of inclusion, can be realized in teaching practice. One way this question is explored in the thesis is through Tjärnstig’s (2022) concept of the didactic room - an action-dependent, immaterial spatiality that arises from teachers’ approaches to subject matter and their relationships with students. This framed space, defined by didactically formed boundaries, embraces unpredictability, participation, and becoming, serving as a pedagogical response that both holds and challenges uncertainty. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopted a phenomenological methodology, grounded in van Manen’s (2023) phenomenology of practice, to explore upper secondary students’ lived experiences of inclusive teaching. Everyday school experiences were treated as the primary site for understanding how inclusion was enacted and perceived in teaching. This approach challenged certainty-oriented research traditions by foregrounding students’ perspectives and by attending to affective, embodied, and often ambiguous dimensions of experience. The analysis was guided by a critical epoché (Merleau-Ponty 1962) and informed by a power-critical perspective (Ahmed 2006, Ainscow et al. 2017), emphasizing the importance of attending to diverse student voices and multiple dimensions of experience. Ethical considerations were integral to the research design, particularly in relation to voice, participation and the risk of reproducing normative assumptions about who was understood as included or excluded, and in which ways (Christensen & Prout 2002). Empirical material was generated through a multi-phase qualitative design (2022–2023) involving six upper secondary schools situated in diverse socio-educational contexts. Methods included open-ended digital surveys (n = 578), individual and focus group interviews (n = 21), and participatory, art-based research methods conducted in two classes (N = 30). Creative approaches (Kara 2015) such as drawing, photo elicitation, mind maps, collages, and role-play were introduced to deepen students’ reflections and to make tacit and embodied aspects of inclusion more tangible. These methods enabled the capture of experiences that were difficult to verbalize and standardize, and supported participant agency in shaping the empirical material. The analytical process followed a phenomenological attitude of openness and wonder (van Manen 2023), informed by Spiegelberg’s (1982) phenomenological analysis steps as a flexible and iterative guide rather than a linear procedure. Analysis proceeded through cycles of attentive listening, descriptive coding, imaginative variation, and reflective writing, including the use of eidetic anecdotes to articulate essential meanings without claiming closure or certainty. In doing so, the study demonstrated how educational research could engage with uncertainty not as a methodological deficit, but as a constitutive condition of educational research, thereby contributing nuanced, experience-based knowledge to socially contested educational debates. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study explores the complex challenges teachers and students face amid rapid societal transformations and emerging social and individual needs. The findings show that inclusive teaching, as experienced by students, is not a set of strategies but a distinct, pedagogically framed spatiality - qualitatively different from everyday life. Students describe inclusion as created through teachers’ establishment of boundaries alongside emotionally resonant atmospheres. Drawing on Tjärnstig’s (2022) concept of the didactic room, this spatiality is understood as a pedagogically enacted realm. In line with Masschelein and Simons’ (2013) notion of scholastic morphology, it forms a fictional educational space where students can step outside predetermined roles and expectations, opening possibilities for new ways of being and learning. The thesis describes this as inclusive didactic spatiality: a flexible, shifting, yet consistently didactically framed teaching process guided by a deliberate didactic intention (Klafki, 1995) oriented toward inclusion. By challenging traditional separations between social and instructional dimensions, this didactic spatiality foregrounds a holistic teaching practice offering a “world within the world” characterized by engagement, relationality, and participatory subject teaching. Inclusion is not external or prior to subject teaching but emerges through it - when subject content is enlivened by a teacher who, guided by an inclusive didactic intention, fosters motivation, belonging, and curiosity. From a general didactic perspective, the subject becomes the medium through which inclusion unfolds, not merely content to be transmitted (cf. Klafki, 1997). Inclusion arises from teachers’ responsiveness to students’ perspectives and a shared exploration of subject matter. Crucially, it is enacted not only in what is taught but how - through subtle didactic work aimed at inclusion. By conceptualizing inclusion as an integral, didactically framed dimension of teaching, this study contributes to European and international educational research seeking to understand and support teaching and learning amid poly-crisis and rapid societal change.
