Paper Perceived Demands, Resources and Burnout among Low-SES Pre-service Teachers: A Multilevel Latent Profiles Analysis Modeling University of Groningen, Netherlands Presenting Author:In line with the poly-crisis theme addressed by ECER 2026, the increasing prevalence of burnout among pre-service teachers exemplifies how global education systems are simultaneously shaped by interconnected social, economic, and institutional pressures (Henderson, 2025). Burnout extends far beyond an individual psychological issue; it also reflects the lack of capacity of teacher education systems to provide equitable, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments that prepare future teachers for complex professional realities (Goddard & O'Brien, 2006). When pre-service teachers experience exhaustion, disengagement, or diminished motivation, the implications are wide-ranging—affecting not only their professional identity formation and instructional qualities (Hong, 2010), but also long-term teacher retention, a challenge documented across many countries (Lee et al., 2023). Particularly in China, there is a growing concern regarding pre-service teacher burnout, especially among pre-service teachers from low socioeconomic status (Low-SES) backgrounds. This specific group of pre-service teachers frequently faces substantial financial strain, often balancing part-time employment with demanding academic and pre-service training requirements (Zhao & Liu, 2019). Rigid program structures, extensive coursework, and high-performance expectations within teacher education universities contribute to sustained pressure (Ran et al., 2012). Social challenges—such as difficulties adapting to unfamiliar institutional cultures or limited peer support—further compound their vulnerability (Zhang, 2010). For Low-SES pre-service teachers, these cumulative burdens may heighten the risk of emotional exhaustion and reduce their confidence and commitment to the teaching profession. Pressures experienced by the Chinese pre-service teachers illuminate systemic vulnerabilities within China’s teacher education landscape, which seem to mirror broader global challenges. Although in China, national initiatives such as the Publicly Funded Teacher Training Program and the Outstanding Teacher Training Program were introduced with the aim to reinforce teacher quality, expand pathways for disadvantaged pre-service teachers, there is evidence that burnout has not decreased—and in some cases has intensified—among pre-service teachers (Xie & Xiao, 2022). This suggests an enduring mismatch between the resources these policies aim to provide and the demands actually faced by low-SES participants. Understanding this mismatch requires conceptual and methodological approaches capable of capturing the interplay between individual characteristics, institutional arrangements, and policy environments. The Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) framework (Bakker, 2011) will be used for examining how financial strain, academic pressure, social exclusion, and family responsibilities (Johnson et al., 2014) interact with personal and institutional resources such as self-efficacy, optimism, belonging and program-level support (Zhang et al., 2010; Ke et al., 2023). Existing research has examined teacher burnout and resilience around the world. However, substantial gaps remain, as past studies in this topic often neglect equity-oriented perspectives, overlooking within-group heterogeneity and the influence of institutional environments on burnout trajectories. To address these gaps, this study employs a person-centered approach to identify patterns of professional preparation demands and resources among Low-SES pre-service teachers across different programs and universities in China by applying a multilevel latent profile analysis (MLPA). This approach is suitable to reveal institutional and individual factors that co-configure burnout risk. The research addresses the following questions: Q1: What are the profiles of perceived professional preparation demands and resources among Low-SES pre-service teachers across different teacher education programs and universities in China? Q2: How can education programs and universities be profiled according to the proportions of profiles of Low-SES pre-service teachers' perceived professional preparation demand and resources? By situating China’s reforms within global debates on teacher shortages, social inequality, and workforce diversification (UNESCO, 2023; OECD, 2023), this research contributes further insights into how structural inequities shape teacher development. The findings aim to strengthen support for disadvantaged groups in teacher education, enhance psychological well-being and professional commitment, and promote the sustainability of the teaching profession amid intensifying global challenges. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Research Design This study employs a cross-sectional design using quantitative surveys utilizing multilevel latent profile analysis (MLPA) to examine burnout profiles among Low-SES pre-service teachers. Participants The sample includes 2080 Low-SES pre-service teachers from seven teacher education universities in China. These participants belong to three program types: PFTTP, OTTP, and general teacher education programs (see general explanation above). Instruments Six validated measures were used: Perceived professional preparation demands: Stress Scale (Johnson et al., 2014) - 24 items measuring economic, academic, social, and family demands (Cronbach's α > 0.70) Personal Resources: Psychological Capital Scale (Zhang et al., 2010) - 26 items assessing self-efficacy, optimism, and hope (Cronbach's α = 0.90) Perceived professional preparation resource: Institutional support: University Equality and Inclusion Climate Scale (Ke et al., 2023) - 15 items measuring financial assistance, developmental support, and social inclusion (Cronbach's α = 0.931) Inclusion Perception Scale (Janse et al., 2014) and Fairness Perception Scale (Lizzio et al., 2007) - 32 items total assessing belonging, authenticity, and fairness perceptions (Cronbach's α > 0.70) Burnout: College Students' Learning Burnout Scale (Lian, 2005) - 20 items measuring emotional exhaustion, inappropriate behavior, and low achievement (Cronbach's α = 0.865) All instruments use 5-point Likert scales and have demonstrated validity in Chinese contexts. Data Analysis Data were analyzed using Mplus 8.3 (Muthén & Muthén, 1998–2017). First, descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations were used to assess professional preparation demands, resources, and burnout. Two confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) followed—one for demands and resources, one for burnout outcomes—to generate factor scores for further analysis. Both models fit well (demands/resources: RMSEA = 0.027, CFI = 0.931; burnout: RMSEA = 0.053, CFI = 0.933). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs)> 0.03 indicated significant program-level variance, validating the use of multilevel analysis. A two-level multilevel latent profile analysis (MLPA) was then performed. At the teacher level, models with 1 to 6 profiles were tested using 10 factor indicators; at the university-program level, 1 to 4 profiles were examined based on the distribution of teacher-level profiles. Models were estimated using maximum likelihood with robust standard errors (MLR) and evaluated using AIC, BIC, adjusted BIC, entropy, and the Lo-Mendell-Rubin test (Li et al.,2025). Finally, demographic covariates such as grade, gender, and place of residence were added, along with burnout outcomes. The R3STEP procedure was chosen to test links between covariates and teacher-level profiles. The BCH method was opted to compare burnout across profiles, with Bonferroni adjustment. At the program level, logistic regression was performed to assess the impact of university type, and model constraints tested burnout differences. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings We identified four distinct profiles at the teacher level with a three-tier classification using ±0.5 as a threshold is advised. The high-level range (≥ 0.5) indicates a positive state, suggesting abundant resources or strong demand. The medium level (-0.5 to 0.5) indicates a neutral state and a balance between resources and demands. The low level (<- 0.5) indicates a negative state with severe resource scarcity or low demand. A 0.5 cutoff matches the typical interpretation of standardized data (such as Z-scores) and clearly separates trends, making high, medium, and low levels distinct both statistically and in practice. Low-resource, medium-demand profile (profile 1) accounts for 17.40% of the total sample. This profile scores lowest on all resource dimensions, while scoring moderately high on several demand dimensions. This combination of relatively high demands and low resources exposes this group to high risk. Medium-resource, medium-demand profile (profile 2) accounts for 26.87%. This profile generally scores at medium levels across all demand dimensions, with particularly low demand in finance. Although their resource score is not outstanding, their medium demand remains relatively stable. Medium-resource, high-demand profile (profile 3) accounts for 11.87%. This profile has the highest scores in demand dimensions. It also scores medium in several resource dimensions. This suggests that while this group has protective mechanisms, they still face high pressure. The high-resource, low-demand profile (profile 4), comprising 43.85%, is the most represented group. This profile is high in resources and scores lowest in demand dimensions, which suggest that pre-service teachers in this group are well-supported and face relatively fewer challenges in their environment. At the university program level, two distinct climates are identified: one showing a diverse profile distribution and another demonstrating a concentrated, high-resource, low-demand profile. Burnout Differentiation Expected findings indicate significant variations in burnout across profiles, with the high-resource, high-demand profile showing the highest burnout levels (M = 0.661). The medium-resource, low-demand profile exhibit the lowest burnout (M = -0.463). Demographic Patterns Female, rural, and higher-grade students are found to face greater resource constraints and a higher risk of burnout. Male, urban, and lower-grade students are likely to occupy more favorable resource configurations. Our findings seem to support gender, urban vs rural, and education grade gaps related to demands, resources, and wellbeing. Theoretical and Practical Implications Our findings challenge obvious assumptions about the relationship between resources and burnout, demonstrating that high resource levels do not automatically prevent burnout when demands are elevated. The results can inform tailored support strategies: immediate intervention for high-demand groups, resource enhancement for low-resource profiles, and demand management for medium-resource, high-demand individuals, whenever possible. The study extends the applicability of the JD-R model by revealing heterogeneous patterns within disadvantaged teacher populations. Paper Knowing and Acting with Place-Based Challenges: Student Teacher Recruitment in Educationally Isolated Areas Plymouth Marjon University, United Kingdom Presenting Author:This paper draws on the Teach Cornwall research project (2023 – 2025) and asks the research question: how can educational research more effectively know, and act with and from, place in addressing persistent teacher supply challenges in rural and coastal contexts? The paper explores how conceptual and methodological work on educational isolation (Ovenden-Hope & Passy, 2019; Ovenden-Hope, Passy, & Iglehart, 2022) reconfigures what counts as evidence for teacher education policy and practice in peripheral areas. England’s dominant policy direction for initial teacher education (ITE) recruitment is implicitly urban (Brooks & Perryman, 2024), assuming dense labour markets, extensive transport infrastructure, and diversified housing and employment opportunities. The findings presented in this paper challenges these assumptions through an in-depth case study of Cornwall, England’s most south‑western county, and the recruitment of student teachers. Cornwall serves over 75,000 pupils across 295 schools, and is characterised by rurality, coast, seasonal tourism, and high levels of deprivation. Despite a national teacher shortage (Department for Education, 2024), Cornwall experiences a paradoxical oversaturation of qualified teachers in primary phase education, alongside acute difficulties recruiting trainee teachers in specific locations and secondary subject areas (Ovenden-Hope, Brown and Walsh, 2025). Using the lens of educational isolation (Ovenden-Hope & Passy, 2019), the paper argues that student teacher recruitment in Cornwall is structured by the intersection of three dimensions: geographic remoteness, socioeconomic disadvantage and cultural isolation (Ovenden-Hope & Passy, 2020). Qualitative data from interviews with trainee teachers and ITE providers illuminate how these dimensions materialise in everyday trajectories into, through and beyond initial teacher education. Trainees describe unsustainable commutes, dependence on private transport, and limited school placement choice; acute housing precarity shaped by second‑home ownership and short‑term lets; and experiences of professional and cultural isolation as minoritised educators in a largely White, mono‑cultural region. At the same time, ITE providers articulate powerful place-based assets: strong community ties, the pedagogical and wellbeing affordances of rural and coastal environments and accelerated professional responsibility in small schools where trainees “feel like a teacher from day dot”. The paper makes three contributions to teacher education research and practice. First, it foregrounds educational isolation (Ovenden-Hope & Passy, 2019) as a critical analytic for re‑knowing ITE in rural and coastal places. Rather than treating Cornwall as a deficit peripheral case, the study interrogates how national policy architectures, funding regimes and data infrastructures systematically misrecognise place-specific conditions. Second, it demonstrates the potential of reflexive, place-engaged qualitative methods, undertaken in partnership with a whole‑county ITE network to generate actionable knowledge. The project surfaces both system-level constraints, such as fragmented workforce data and misaligned national incentives, and meso‑level innovations developed by providers to mitigate them. These include hub‑based and hybrid delivery models that reduce travel burdens; “grow your own” pathways that scaffold progression from teaching assistant to qualified teacher. Third, the paper argues that acting on this reconfigured knowledge requires a shift from generic, urban‑normative teacher supply strategies towards place‑sensitive teacher education ecologies. National policymakers are called to revisit assumptions embedded in bursary schemes, accountability measures and workforce planning models, recognising place-based determinants of entry into teaching (Ovenden-Hope, Brown, & Achtaridou, 2025). For ITE providers and local alliances, it calls for governance and partnership arrangements that treat rural and coastal schools as co‑researchers in designing viable training routes, not simply as placement sites. By situating these research findings within wider international debates about rural and coastal education, teacher shortages and place-conscious teacher education, the paper shows how educational research can both describe and disrupt the changing conditions under which teacher education is enacted, opening up new potentials for knowing and acting with justice in, and for, rural and coastal communities. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The paper is drawn from the findings of the Teach Cornwall research project (2023 – 2025), a qualitative, place-based investigation of initial teacher education (ITE) recruitment in Cornwall undertaken by Plymouth Marjon University, funded by OneCornwall Teaching School Hub. The research design combined a critical review of national and international literature on trainee teacher recruitment and rural/coastal education with primary qualitative data generation focused on the lived experiences and strategic responses of those directly engaged in ITE in the county. A purposive, multi‑stage sampling strategy was used to recruit trainee teachers. Following ethical approval from Plymouth Marjon University, the lead researcher contacted all 12 ITT providers operating in Cornish schools and colleges, including university‑led, School Centred Initial Teacher Training (SCITT), multi‑academy trust (MAT) and further education (FE) college-based programmes. Providers acted as mediating gatekeepers, circulating information sheets and invitations to their current trainee cohorts. Interested trainees then responded directly to the research team via an online scheduling tool to arrange interviews, ensuring voluntary participation and supporting accessibility across dispersed locations. This process enabled recruitment of trainees from diverse routes, phases and personal circumstances, including career‑changers and teaching assistants progressing into ITE (n=9). In parallel, all 12 ITE providers were invited to participate in semi‑structured interviews; nine agreed, representing approximately 75% of the local provider landscape and encompassing SCITT, MAT, FE and university provision. This ‘census‑style’ approach to provider sampling sought to capture the breadth of organisational perspectives on recruitment, placement and progression, including both challenges and emergent innovations. Interview guides were informed by the educational isolation framework (geographic remoteness, socioeconomic disadvantage, cultural isolation) and by prior work on rural poverty and employment precarity in Cornwall (Ovenden-Hope, Brown, & Achtaridou, 2025). Interviews were audio‑recorded, transcribed and analysed using Braun and Clarke’s reflexive thematic analysis (Braune & Clarke, 2021). The analytic process involved iterative cycles of familiarisation, coding, theme development and refinement, with explicit attention to the three dimensions of educational isolation and to crosscutting, unexpected patterns. The educational isolation concept operated as a sensitising lens rather than a fixed coding frame, allowing for the identification of both challenge‑oriented and asset‑based themes. Throughout, the research team engaged in reflexive dialogue regarding positionality and used ongoing engagement with the OneCornwall network to sense‑check emerging interpretations. This reflexive, partnership‑oriented methodology supports the paper’s broader argument about the potentials of place-engaged education research for re‑shaping teacher education knowledge and action in rural and coastal systems. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The research findings demonstrate that teacher education in rural and coastal regions cannot be adequately understood, or reformed, through policy lenses calibrated on urban norms. By foregrounding educational isolation (Ovenden-Hope & Passy, 2019) as an organising concept, the paper shows how intersecting dynamics of geographic remoteness, socioeconomic disadvantage and cultural isolation configure who can access, sustain and progress through ITE in Cornwall (and areas like it), and on what terms. These dynamics are not incidental background conditions but central mechanisms through which opportunity to become and remain a teacher is structured (Ingersoll & Tran, 2023; Jiang & Yip, 2024). At the same time, the research cautions against deficit framings of rural and coastal teacher education (Passy & Ovenden-Hope, 2019). Participant accounts illuminate significant assets: deep community relationships, the wellbeing and pedagogical affordances of coastal and rural environments, and rich opportunities for early professional responsibility. The innovations developed by Cornwall’s ITE providers – including hub-based and hybrid delivery, “grow your own” pathways and multi‑layered mentoring and support – exemplify how local actors are already acting creatively on situated knowledge to re‑design teacher education ecosystems from within. The paper advances three implications: first, teacher education research needs to take place seriously as a structuring condition, not merely a contextual backdrop, in theorising recruitment, retention and professionalism; second, methodological commitments to partnership‑oriented, reflexive qualitative inquiry can generate forms of knowledge that are simultaneously analytically robust and practically actionable for providers, schools and policymakers, and third, acting on such knowledge requires a re‑calibration of national teacher supply and ITE policy architectures, including data infrastructures, funding mechanisms and accountability frameworks, so that they work with rather than against the grain of rural and coastal realities. Paper The Impact of Stress, Emotional Labor, Cultural Responsiveness, and Occupational Commitment on Teacher Wellbeing in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Schools 1: University of Wollongong, Australia; 2: Western Sydney University, Australia; 3: University of New South Wales, Australia Presenting Author:Nearly one in four Australian students come from a language background other than English (ABS, 2022), yet teacher shortages persist, particularly in schools serving culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities (AITSL, 2025). Teachers in these settings navigate language barriers, cultural differences, and varied student support needs, intensifying everyday complexity (Schweitzer et al., 2021) and contributing to elevated emotional demands, stress, and reduced wellbeing and retention (Cruz et al., 2020; Yin et al., 2019). Similar patterns are found across Europe, where migration and refugee settlement have reshaped school demographics, placing additional pressure on teacher preparedness, emotional labour, and workforce stability (European Commission, 2023). Despite policy attention, only 20% of European teachers receive cultural responsiveness training, leaving many underprepared for inclusive pedagogy and exposed to emotional demands when supporting students facing discrimination or trauma.While European reforms embed intercultural curricula and assessment adaptations, teachers remain frontline responders to student discrimination, trauma, and exclusion, sustaining high emotional demands (European Commission, 2023). Cultural responsiveness (CR), encompassing teachers' beliefs, self-efficacy, everyday practices, and engagement in targeted professional learning, is a core lever for equity in CALD classrooms, drawing on students' cultural and linguistic strengths to support belonging and participation (Gay, 2013; Comstock et al., 2023; Hilliard et al., 2024). However, uneven access to quality professional development and limited specialist support constrain teachers' capacity to adapt instruction (Szelei et al., 2020; Tualaulelei & Halse, 2021). Generic training may increase uncertainty, while confidence in CR practice strengthens instructional clarity, student relationships, and morale (Darling-Hammond, 2017; Comstock et al., 2023; Premachandran, 2025). Teacher wellbeing is a global concern (OECD, 2020; WHO & UNESCO, 2021). Stress and emotional labour (EL) contribute significantly to burnout and attrition (Australian Government, 2022b; Rahimi & Arnold, 2024). Teachers in CALD settings often regulate emotional displays to maintain classroom stability while juggling diverse learning needs (Kariou et al., 2021). Stress accumulates when expectations exceed resources, and underprepared teachers report higher stress and EL (Tatar & Horenczyk, 2003). Systemic drivers, including funding shortfalls, limited interpreters, and inconsistent assessment adaptation processes, intensify pressure and shape school norms (Darling-Hammond, 2017). While surface acting increases emotional exhaustion, deep acting and authentic expression support healthier classroom climates but require adequate preparation and collegial support (Smith et al., 2025). Culturally responsive practices and strong occupational commitment support teacher retention in CALD schools (AITSL, 2025; Comstock et al., 2023). Self-efficacy is associated with stronger commitment and lower quitting intentions, whereas stress and EL reduce commitment (Klassen & Chiu, 2011). While the importance of culturally responsive education is increasingly recognized, limited empirical understanding exists of how CR, EL, and stress interact to shape teachers' occupational commitment in CALD contexts. This study investigates relationships between CR, EL, stress, and occupational commitment in teachers working in CALD schools across Australia, examining both quantitative patterns and teachers' lived experiences. Drawing on Vygotsky's (1978) sociocultural theory and the Self-Care Matrix (El-Osta et al., 2019), the study conceptualizes teacher wellbeing as relational, contextually embedded, and shaped by institutional supports and professional environments. Research questions: (1) What are the relationships between cultural responsiveness, emotional labour, stress, and occupational commitment in CALD schools? (2) What do teachers say about their CR capacities, stress, EL, and commitment? Identifying practice-ready levers such as targeted professional learning, specialist staffing, role design, and assessment policy can strengthen supportive teaching environments and improve retention in schools most in need of stability (AITSL, 2025; Comstock et al., 2023; Rahimi & Arnold, 2024). These findings hold relevance for European contexts facing similar challenges in supporting teachers within increasingly diverse educational settings. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This mixed-methods study used a cross-sectional survey design to investigate relationships between cultural responsiveness, emotional labour, stress, and occupational commitment among teachers in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) schools across Australia. Participants (n=120) were primary and secondary teachers working in schools with significant CALD student populations across Australian states and territories. Recruitment occurred through professional networks, teacher associations, and direct school outreach. The survey comprised four validated scales: Occupational Commitment (Klassen & Chiu, 2011): A 9-item scale assessing commitment to the profession (6 items) and intentions to quit (3 items), with higher scores indicating stronger commitment. Cultural Responsiveness (Comstock et al., 2023): A 28-item measure with four subscales. The CR Teaching Scale (9 items) measures frequency of culturally responsive practices on a 4-point scale. The CR Teaching Self-Efficacy Scale (8 items) assesses confidence in implementing CR practices, rated 0 (no confidence) to 10 (complete confidence). The CR Teaching Beliefs Scale (5 items) examines beliefs about cultural diversity and inclusive pedagogy on a 6-point Likert scale. The Professional Learning subscale (6 items) evaluates engagement with CR-focused professional development on a 4-point scale. Job Stress (Klassen & Chiu, 2011): A 5-item measure assessing stress from four specific sources (workload, student behaviour, time pressure, administrative demands) plus one overall item: "I find teaching to be stressful." Items rated 1 (no stress) to 9 (extreme stress). Teacher Emotional Labour in Classroom (Ma et al., 2023): A 17-item scale measuring four dimensions: surface acting (displaying unfelt emotions), deep acting (genuinely modifying feelings), expression of naturally felt emotions, and emotional termination (suppressing expression). Items rated on a 5-point Likert scale. Three open-ended questions complemented quantitative measures: (1) "How useful is cultural responsiveness professional learning to your teaching?" (2) "When teaching CALD students, what aspects do you find most stressful or not stressful?" (3) "When your true feelings are inconsistent with required emotions for teaching CALD students, what do you do to adjust your emotions?" Quantitative data will be analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and regression modeling to examine relationships between constructs. Qualitative responses will undergo thematic analysis to identify patterns in teachers' experiences and mechanisms through which CR capacities, professional support, and emotional demands shape teacher wellbeing and retention in CALD schools. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The respondents were predominantly female (56%), and young, with the largest age group being 30–39 years (36%), followed by 20–29 years (29%). Many were early career teachers, with 41% having five years or less experience, and a further 25% reporting six to ten years in the profession. Initial results indicate considerable ambivalence toward the profession. Around 60% had positive feelings about quitting, and nearly 40% intended to leave teaching. While 54% still wanted a career in teaching, 40% stated they would not choose the profession again. Stress levels were high: 90% reported stress from student lack of effort, and maintaining discipline caused moderate to very high stress for a substantial proportion. Emotional labour was evident, with almost 60% agreeing they “put on a mask” while teaching and nearly half acknowledging that their displayed emotions did not match their internal feelings. Most teachers engaged in culturally responsive practices such as adapting instruction, analysing materials for bias, or using students’ cultural backgrounds to support learning. Approximately three quarters of teachers expressed confidence in adapting instruction, using varied methods, and applying developmentally appropriate practices for their students. Most respondents (92%) agreed that culturally responsive practice and respect for diversity are essential for inclusive classrooms. However, professional learning opportunities appeared limited, only 6% agreeing that training challenged biases, and most reporting only small to moderate improvements in practice. Results reveal teachers experiencing high stress and emotional strain yet maintaining strong commitment to culturally responsive practice despite limited professional learning support. Teachers value inclusivity but face significant pressures influencing wellbeing and retention. Further recruitment of 130 teachers is planned to strengthen analytical rigor and interpretive depth. Paper Ecosystems of Teacher Learning: Developing Professional Learning Spaces that Foster Complex and Resilient Systems of Support 1: Touro University, United States of America; 2: Teachers College, Columbia University, United States of America Presenting Author:Teachers who are able to support complex systems of learning with nuance and expertise are an integral factor of student learning (Darling-Hammond, 2016; Özer, B., Can, T., & Duran, V., 2020). Yet, in too many countries, solutions for ensuring high-quality student learning are shifting toward a technorational view that attempts to simplify complex systems of learning and replace them with simplified “teacher proof” practices that are defined at a policy level (Dadvand, Ryan, & Murphy, 2025). As teachers engage in their central work of teaching students, they are being increasingly inundated with bureaucratic requirements that center proving their worth through the use of data in ways that strip detailed tapestries of student learning and reduce them into little more than the most general of outlines (McCarthy, Riddle, & Hickey, 2025). This is a form of knowledge creation that locks teachers into a “performative agenda” that does benefit the students it is purportedly meant to serve. Here, knowledge is being “created” in a way that decenters teachers and students and replaces them with nameless, faceless claims that highlight their failures while offering only very few pragmatic solutions that are contextually relevant to local learning spaces. We can’t help but contrast this stripped, simplified, and depersonalized version of teaching and learning with research about exemplary learning contexts that emphasize how knowledge across domains “is subject to the professional identities of their ‘owners’” (Hameyer, 2007) and learning theories that emphasize the importance of “build[ing] on the situated nature of learning, emphasising the value of learning through ‘doing’ in the company of others and acknowledg[ing] both the socio-cultural and socio-material nature of learning,” (Carvalho & Yeoman, p. 1122). These versions of learning are complex and difficult to enact. They require continued teacher learning and critical reflection throughout a teacher’s career. They center the teacher and student in the learning process rather than trying to remove or mitigate their impact. As pre-service teachers are prepared to enter this complex and contradictory system, they are too often faced with the abrasive realities of teaching without having access to contexts where teachers are engaged in creative processes of mitigating the negative impacts of these tensions. One veteran teacher described her concern for pre-service teachers who were entering schools and were, “just get[ting] schooled in how school is…like the culture of school and it really takes some of the joy out of teaching,” (Adeyemi, Pratt, & Stanton, 2025). Field experiences offer an important context for new teacher learning and they must pair these with intentional introductions to the creative, constructive, and sometimes subversive work that teachers do to meet the needs of their students despite the challenges they face. In this study, we look at one example of this work by examining the experiences of a group of teachers, who have been working to reshape and reimagine their own understandings of teaching and learning. By coming together, they have engaged in a process of knowledge creation as they co-construct pedagogical strategies to address instructional dilemmas they face in their own classrooms. We also examine their process of inviting pre-service teachers to participate in this space, as an opportunity for considering the fabric of possibility in the context of school. Research Questions:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This qualitative case study examines the experiences of knowledge creation co-constructed by a coalition of teachers, all sharing a connection to one teacher preparation program (as former students and/or Mentor Teachers), who shared the aim of enhancing their teaching practice and elevating the real-world applications of their students’ learning. The participants were a group of 20 teachers and teacher educators, all working in an informal network of public schools in partnership with one local university in a large north-eastern city in the United States. At the time of the study, the coalition had existed in varying forms for nearly 9 years. Teachers used this space to ask questions, pose dilemmas, and engage in experimental teaching practices that were then taken back to schools to be applied in for formal classroom contexts. Data Collection In previous projects, over 8 years we collected a range of documents (e.g., student journals, meeting notes, correspondence, workshopping posters, individual interviews) that also act as longitudinal sources of data for this study. Additional data for this project includes a set of two focus groups meant to explore the theoretical and practical elements of this group’s work. The first focus group centers on the idea of knowledge creation and the group’s experience engaging with pedagogical dilemmas and developing professional processes of inquiry as a community to interrogate them. The second uses a narrative storytelling method to explore experiential (what did we do?) and emotional (how did it feel?) elements of this work. Data Analysis Analysis for this study utilizes a multi-layered method. This includes a preliminary chronological sequencing of data chronologically to develop a “storyboard” that offers insights into teacher learning and how concepts of knowledge creation and co-constructed change over time. Transcript elements are layered onto this using the second focus group and matching this storytelling narrative to our sequenced storyboard. We will next use a cycle of process coding to describe changes and consider how “actions intertwined with the dynamics of time,” (Miles, Huberman, & Saldana, 2014). Finally, to explore connections between actions and motive/intent/motivation, we will add an additional layer of coding that focuses on values, attitudes, and beliefs of the participants (Saldana & Masta, 2018). This cycle of thematic coding offers insight into how social interactions affected ways that participants engaged in their professional practice as we think about the nature of the community or ecosystem is being collaboratively constructed. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our preliminary results offer an illustration of ways in which a few simple actions can result in the development of complex and vibrant systems. Members of the coalition joined this group through word-of-mouth and because colleagues were having positive experiences. The growth was organic as one person would bring another. Teachers talked about having “an outlet where [I] felt like I could do the type of teaching and learning that I was hoping to” and “being excited about being a part” of the community that was forming. This energy seems to have been reinforced through community norms and structures such as open meeting times where the agenda was co-constructed and that happened in-person and a fluidity of membership where teachers would take a break at pivotal moments when they had less bandwidth (e.g., taking a year off while buying a house, having a child, or getting married) and then would reenter the community and continue to contribute. Within the space, our preliminary data indicates a process where identifying dilemmas (e.g., my school won’t let me do that), asking questions (e.g., but what does that actually look like in teaching practice?), and experimentation (e.g., well let’s try that with some students and see what happens) formed the basic structure that defined the work of the group. Our preliminary data shows an iterative cycle that offered an open structure of inquiry-based teacher learning that ultimately came to also impact student, pre-service teacher, and teacher educator learning as the structures of the community became continuously more complex in terms of membership while also maintaining a simple structure for engaging in pedagogical inquiry.
