Paper From Use to Transformation: Children’s Spatial Agency and Interior Design as Socio-Material Practice in a Primary School 1: Sophia::Academy, Duesseldorf, Germany; 2: Familiengrundschulzentrum Sonnenstrasse, Duesseldorf, Germany Presenting Author:Learning environments have increasingly been conceptualised as educational space, foregrounding the interrelation of pedagogy, spatial design and social practice rather than treating space as a neutral container for learning (OECD, 2013; Barrett et al., 2015). Effective uses of learning environments are often discussed in relation to Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs), which seek to align spatial configurations with contemporary pedagogical approaches. While research on Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs) has produced substantial evidence on the effects of spatial configuration on learning processes, much of this work remains focused on architectural typologies, technological infrastructures or adult-led design processes (Dumont et al., 2010; Cleveland & Fisher, 2014). Far less attention has been paid to learning environments conceptualised, analysed and reconfigured by children themselves, particularly in primary school contexts. This study focuses on educational space as a socio-material practice emerging from children’s systematic engagement with interior learning environments. Drawing on empirical research conducted within the European CLEAR project (CLEAR 2025), an Erasmus+ strategic partnership for innovation focusing on pedagogical interior architecture, the contribution examines how a group of primary school children conceptualised their school as a wellbeing-oriented learning environment and how this child-generated spatial knowledge informed changes extending from a dedicated learning space to the whole school. The empirical focus lies on a primary school in a socially and structurally challenging context, allowing for an analysis of how educational space is produced under conditions of inequality, limited resources and high everyday demands. The central research questions guiding the contribution are: How do children conceptualise educational space when invited to analyse their school as a place of wellbeing, stress, and belonging? How do child-generated spatial concepts translate into interior design interventions and changes at school level? How can educational space be theorised as a process shaped by user-generated knowledge rather than predefined design models? The theoretical framework combines research on educational space, socio-material approaches to learning environments (Fenwick et al., 2011), and critical perspectives on ILEs that emphasise use, interpretation and contextual responsiveness over formal design intentions (Woolner, 2018; Sigurðardóttir & Hjartarson, 2016). Rather than positioning ILEs as normative or technology-driven solutions, the contribution conceptualises educational space as processual and contingent, shaped through everyday practices and interior design negotiations. The originality of the proposed contribution lies in its focus on children as a young user-research group whose spatial analyses and wellbeing-oriented design concepts inform school-wide learning environment development. By combining a child-centred, longitudinal perspective with post-occupancy and interior design analysis, this study extends existing research on learning environments beyond adult-centred planning models. Situated within the context of the CLEAR project, the study contributes empirically grounded insights into how educational space can be conceptualised as a context-sensitive, user-informed, and interior-design-driven practice, offering a differentiated perspective on learning environments under conditions of social inequality and institutional constraint. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopts a longitudinal mixed-methods research design combining post-occupancy, participatory and socio-material approaches to the investigation of educational space. Empirical data were collected over a period of 32 weeks in a German primary school located in a socio-economically disadvantaged urban area and officially designated as a “StartChancenschule”. The school context is characterised by heightened social inequality, limited material resources and complex everyday demands. The study involved 14 pupils aged 6 to 10 (Grades 1–4), including children with identified special educational needs. The empirical work was embedded in the "FREI DAY", a non-instructional, school-wide project-based learning format in which every Friday (three hours per week) is dedicated to self-chosen projects. Within this framework, pupils worked continuously over the full 32-week period on a project entitled Learning-Space-Experts, investigating their school as a learning and living environment. The project was accompanied by two school-based social workers, and an external expert with expertise in learning environments enabling sustained engagement with spatial experience, well-being and everyday use of interior spaces. Data collection focused on capturing changes in spatial perception, use and meaning over time. Research instruments included spatial mapping, through which pupils documented perceived stress zones, places of well-being and movement patterns within the school. These mappings were complemented by photographic Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE), with pupils producing visual records of interior design elements, spatial arrangements and everyday use situations. POE was applied as a pedagogically adapted research tool to analyse space-in-use rather than design intention, following established approaches in learning environment research (Cleveland & Fisher, 2014; Woolner, 2018). Additional qualitative data were generated through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews with pupils, teachers and school-based social workers involved in the project, enabling a multi-perspective analysis of spatial practices and perceived changes. Photo-elicitation techniques supported reflection on spatial experience and interpretation (Harper, 2002). Reflective documentation produced during the project provided further insight into children’s evolving spatial language and conceptualisations of well-being, stress and belonging. Data analysis followed an inductive qualitative and longitudinal approach. Visual, verbal and spatial data were analysed iteratively and triangulated to enhance analytical robustness (Flick, 2018). As part of the process, the project group’s proposals were shared with the wider school community, and collective prioritisation involved approximately 320 pupils. The analytical perspective was informed by socio-material approaches, which conceptualise learning environments as emerging from the interaction of material arrangements, social practices and interpretation rather than as fixed settings (Fenwick et al., 2011). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study provides empirical evidence that primary school children are capable of analysing and reconfiguring educational space in socially meaningful and spatially precise ways. By engaging children as a young user-research group over an extended period, the findings show that pupils develop differentiated perceptions of well-being, stress and belonging in relation to interior learning environments. These perceptions are systematically linked to material configurations, spatial arrangements and everyday practices. A central contribution of the study lies in demonstrating that low-threshold interior design interventions, such as movable furniture, flexible zoning and targeted use of colour, can support participation and agency without requiring large-scale architectural transformation or technology-intensive solutions. Pedagogical interior architecture emerges as a key factor in enabling children to articulate spatial needs and translate experiential knowledge into school-wide spatial concepts. Beyond their role as participants, the children involved in the study functioned as mediators of spatial knowledge. As pupils from different classes, they transferred insights into broader school contexts and contributed to reflection among peers. Their analyses and visualisations informed discussions with teachers, school-based social workers, parents and political stakeholders. Being listened to and given a public platform had effects on children’s perceived self-efficacy and on the recognition of their perspectives within the school community. The findings extend existing research on learning environments by showing how children’s spatial agency contributes not only to use but to the transformation of school spaces (Biesta, 2010). From a socio-scientific perspective, these processes of recognition are particularly relevant in socio-economically disadvantaged contexts. Acknowledging children’s spatial knowledge and integrating it into decision-making processes can strengthen their sense of belonging and reshape patterns of acceptance and trust (Biesta, 2010). Educational space thus appears not only as a material configuration but as a relational practice shaped by whose knowledge is recognised and how it circulates within institutions (Soja, 2010). Paper Spaces of Belonging in Innovative Learning Environments: Teachers’ and Special Educators’ Practices of Inclusion in Swedish Compulsory School Umeå University, Sweden Presenting Author:Internationally, school systems are responding to social, technological, and demographic change through the redesign of school architecture and learning environments. One increasingly adopted approach has been the development of Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs), which are often characterised by open-plan layouts, flexible spatial configurations, and an emphasis on collaborative pedagogical practices (Dovey & Fisher, 2014). Within policy and design discourse, ILEs are frequently positioned as inherently supportive of inclusion and participation. However, the effects of these spatial innovations are not inherently uniform or automatic (Woolner et al., 2018; Page et al., 2024a). Instead, ILEs shape educators’ everyday professional practices in ways that are mediated by specific cultural, organisational, and relational contexts. This research project examines how inclusion is enacted within ILEs in Swedish compulsory schools, with a particular focus on how teachers and special educators work to create conditions for belonging for students with higher educational needs. The project is theoretically grounded in the Spaces of Belonging framework (Page et al., 2024a; 2024b), which conceptualises inclusion as a relational and situated process through which learners come to experience safety, recognition, and legitimate participation. Thus, the aim of this study is to provide a deeper understanding of how educators themselves actively work to create and sustain spaces of belonging within these environments, explored through the following research questions:
Situated within Sweden’s decentralised education system, where municipalities exercise significant autonomy over school design and organisation, the project offers strong European relevance. It demonstrates that inclusion in ILEs is not determined exclusively by architectural innovation, but also by the work of educators. By foregrounding educators’ work, the project contributes to critical European debates on the design of educational spaces and the organisation of educational personnel. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The project employs a qualitative case study design to investigate a Swedish compulsory school organised as an ILE. The study is guided by the Spaces of Belonging framework, which serves as a conceptual lens for examining how educators’ professional practices shape inclusion and belonging. This design allows for detailed attention to the ways in which everyday educational work produces, negotiates, and sometimes disrupts students’ sense of belonging. Empirical data are collected through semi-structured interviews with classroom teachers and special educators across different levels of compulsory schooling within the selected school. The school is purposively selected because it represents an established ILE context and provides opportunities to explore how spatial, organisational, and pedagogical conditions shape educators’ work with inclusion and belonging. The interviews focus on educators’ perceptions and enactments of inclusion and belonging within ILEs. Particular emphasis is placed on the intersections of relational, pedagogical, and material space to support students needing adaptation. All interviews are audio-recorded and transcribed verbatim to ensure accurate representation of participants’ accounts. Data analysis follows a thematic approach informed by the Spaces of Belonging framework and is conducted in three stages. First, inductive coding identifies recurring patterns in educators’ language, priorities, and descriptions of practice. Second, focused thematic coding compares these patterns across professional roles and school levels, highlighting similarities and differences in practice within the case site. Finally, a deductive phase examines how belonging is negotiated in everyday work. The analysis aims to illuminate how belonging is accomplished, contested, and stabilised through professional practice. This approach foregrounds belonging as a situated and ongoing process embedded in the everyday work of educators. By combining empirical data from a single ILE site with the Spaces of Belonging framework as an analytical lens, the study provides insight into how belonging is produced in ILEs and how these processes are shaped within a specific school context. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results of this study show that belonging in ILEs is not an inherent outcome of their open or flexible design, but a fragile and labour-intensive accomplishment produced through educators’ professional work. Belonging emerges as something that must be actively created and maintained in spaces that often place high sensory, social, and organisational demands on learners. Classroom teachers primarily enact inclusion through pedagogical organisation within shared spaces, balancing flexibility with routines that make participation possible. Special educators, however, consistently frame inclusion as a vulnerable achievement requiring deliberate relational and pedagogical mediation. Their work centres on fostering emotional safety, maintaining continuity, and translating students’ needs into adaptations of teaching practices and spatial use. Material space emerges as a powerful structuring force that educators have limited capacity to change. While architectural design strongly shapes what is possible, responsibility for negotiating inclusion largely falls on educators and students. Special educators, in particular, function as key mediators who absorb misalignment between architectural vision and inclusive practice. Preliminary findings demonstrate that while ILEs offer opportunities for collaboration and pedagogical variation, they also intensify sensory exposure, social visibility, and demands for independence. These conditions are frequently experienced as destabilising by students, particularly those in need of adaptation. Rather than positioning ILEs as inclusive or exclusionary, the project examines how educators actively work to create spaces of belonging within environments often misaligned with students’ needs. Through the Spaces of Belonging framework, this project contributes empirically and theoretically to European research on learning environments. It shows that belonging in ILEs is not just an effect of spatial innovation, but a continuous process of professional negotiation across relational, pedagogical, and material dimensions. The findings call for more critical, practice-oriented approaches to school design and evaluation, recognising educators’ professional labour as central to the enactment of inclusive education. Paper Teachers' Understanding and Implementation of Student-Centred Learning and Teaching Practice in a School Designed as an Innovative Learning Environment Umeå University, Sweden Presenting Author:Across Europe, schools are being redesigned as Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs) to support resilient, inclusive and student-centred learning. Yet new buildings rarely deliver pedagogical change on their own: teachers and teams must develop shared understandings, spatial competence, and workable forms of shared control. This paper reports a mixed-methods substudy (2023-2025) within a longitudinal project (2019-2026) in a Swedish K-9 school purpose-built as an ILE. Educational space is increasingly discussed as a response to social transformations that challenge schools to be both future-oriented and equitable. In this discussion, Innovative Learning Environments (ILEs) are often presented as architectural and organisational answers to demands for flexibility, collaboration, and personalised learning. At the same time, the idea of student-centred learning (SCL) remains contested. What is labelled student-centred can, in practice, drift into individualisation: more individual work, less whole-class dialogue, and higher expectations on students' self-regulation without adequate scaffolding. This matters not only for learning outcomes but also for democratic aims, because participation is structurally dependent on how teaching is organised in everyday practice (Aspelin, 2014). To connect pedagogy, organisation, and space, we refer to Baars et al. (2023), who argue that relationships between innovative pedagogies and physical learning environments should be understood relationally: as a network of psychosocial and physical aspects that users continuously interpret, negotiate and stabilise. A key implication is that physical design is not deterministic. The experienced supportiveness of space depends on system conditions (e.g., shared control, rule clarity, coordination) and on users' opportunities to participate in design, adaptation, and ongoing discourse. Drawing on a multidimensional conceptualisation of student-centred learning (Bremner, 2021) and Baars et al. psychosocial-physical relational approach, we analyse (1) teachers' understandings of student-centred learning, (2) an implementation gap between planned and enacted lessons, and (3) associations between perceived student-centred learning efficacy and psychosocial/spatial conditions. Data comprise open-ended questionnaire responses (n=56), pre/post lesson evaluations from a teacher workshop (n=51/25), and a compiled questionnaire combining validated scales with student-centred learning items (n=48). This paper explores how teachers' perspectives illuminate the emergence of Educational Space for SCL in a new ILE school. We address three questions: RQ1: What are teachers' beliefs about SCL and the challenges of implementing SCL in an ILE? RQ2: Is there a difference in how teachers evaluate an SCL-planned lesson (before) and its execution (after)? RQ3: How does teachers' perceived SCL efficacy relate to other factors shaping teachers' being, doing and relating at school? Findings indicate diverse teacher conceptions of student-centred learning and recurring challenges (motivation, need for structure, collaboration constraints). Teachers rated formative assessment, adapting to needs, and relevant skills lower after enactment than during planning, and perceived supportiveness of the ILE design correlated strongly with student-centred efficacy. Taken together, the findings support a relational view of Educational Space. The ILE is not simply a backdrop for pedagogy but becomes supportive (or obstructive) through how teaching teams coordinate, distribute responsibility, and stabilise routines for sharing control. The significant drop in ratings for formative assessment and adapting to needs after lesson enactment suggests that these SCL dimensions are especially sensitive to the alignment between spatial possibilities (e.g., availability of suitable zones and surfaces for feedback cycles), organisational conditions (time, grouping, access to smaller rooms), and psychosocial conditions (team coherence, confidence to experiment, psychological safety). We discuss implications for researching and designing Educational Space as a sociomaterial and team-mediated project. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study is part of a longitudinal project (2019-2026) following the move into a newly built Swedish K-9 ILE school (Bergström et al., 2025; Wiklund-Engblom et al., 2025). The school is organised in teaching teams that share responsibility for cohorts and shared spaces. The study reported here uses a mixed methods design (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2017), combining qualitative and quantitative data collected on four occasions between 2023 and 2025. Data include: (a) an open-ended teacher questionnaire on what SCL means and what makes it difficult in practice (2023, n=56); (b) a teacher workshop in which teams planned an SCL lesson and rated the plan using Likert items based on Bremner's (2021) SCL dimensions (2024, pre n=51); (c) teachers' evaluations after enacting the planned lesson (2024, post n=25); and (d) a compiled teacher questionnaire (2025, n=48) combining SCL efficacy items with validated scales measuring, for example, collective team efficacy (Skaalvik & Skaalvik, 2021), psychological safety (Edmondson, 2018), work satisfaction, work engagement (Schaufeli et al., 2019), stress resilience (Smith et al., 2008), and relational competence (Aspelin, 2018). Qualitative responses were analysed thematically (Braun & Clarke, 2021). Quantitative analyses included independent-samples t-tests (pre vs post lesson ratings) and Pearson correlations between SCL efficacy and the compiled scales. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings RQ1 (beliefs and challenges): Teachers expressed a broad set of understandings of SCL. Thematic analysis identified emphases on student voice (influence over goals and processes), student agency (ownership and responsibility), emotional safety (encouragement and inclusiveness), reflection and metacognition, peer learning and mutual support, dialogic teaching, structured engagement (scaffolding and guided autonomy), and creativity/multimodality. At the same time, teachers reported persistent tensions: difficulty engaging all students, the need for guidance and structure, variability in student readiness for autonomy, conditions for support and differentiation, and practical limits to collaboration (e.g., group size). A recurring message was that team functioning and shared ways of working are decisive for sustaining SCL in an open and flexible environment. RQ2 (planned vs enacted lessons): Comparing ratings before and after lesson enactment indicates an implementation gap for specific SCL dimensions. Teachers rated formative assessment, adapting to needs, and relevant skills significantly lower after teaching the lesson than when planning it. Autonomy, power sharing, and active participation did not show significant pre-post differences. RQ3 (associations with SCL efficacy): Teachers' perceived SCL efficacy correlated significantly with six questionnaire scales. The strongest association was between SCL efficacy and teachers' perceptions that the ILE design is supportive for helping students learn. SCL efficacy was also positively associated with communicative competence, stress resilience, work engagement, collective team efficacy, and work satisfaction. In addition, perceived supportiveness of the ILE design correlated with multiple SCL dimensions (e.g., formative assessment, adapting to needs, autonomy, power sharing), suggesting that teachers experience spatial and organisational affordances as particularly salient when enacting demanding SCL practices. Educational Space should be understood as an ongoing, participatory, and context-sensitive process in which teacher teams develop shared pedagogical language, spatial competence, and locally workable agreements about how space is used. Paper The In-between Space in Physical Learning Environments: Exploring the Spatial, Social, and Pedagogical Potential for Inclusive Education. Hasselt University, Belgium Presenting Author:The design of learning environments plays a key role in shaping educational experiences (Kowaltowski et al., 2024). Pedagogical innovations often lead to a demand for appropriate spatial configurations of the physical learning environment (Dovey & Fisher, 2014), but the translation of pedagogical concepts into spatial principles depends on the direction prioritized by policy (Hofverberg & Sigurdson, 2025; Cormio et al., in review). In the contemporary context of spatial challenges for changing pedagogies, this doctoral research project will focus on the spatial environment in which we host inclusive education, a concept subject to ongoing European and international political discourse. This research is situated within the context of Flanders, Belgium, where a new policy initiative for inclusive education has recently been launched. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In this doctoral research, we propose a qualitative research design that integrates architectural research techniques in pedagogical environments to explore the didactic potential of "in-between spaces" for inclusive education. The suggested approach challenges conventional methods in education, integrating spatial and graphic techniques to obtain rich user experiences. First, we suggest an architectural study on school typologies to identify key spatial elements of “in-between spaces” in Flemish school cases. Therefore, a range of primary and secondary school sites will be selected, varying in scale and capacity. The “in-between spaces” will be detected and analyzed in these cases, adopting research techniques such as a comparative floor plan analysis (Beckers et al., 2015) to deepen the spatial understanding. Next, we suggest shifting from a theoretical to an empirical lens to gain a deep understanding of how “in-between spaces” function and interact within the school environment. Therefore, we want to zoom in on the actual use of these spaces in the corresponding school cases. An ethnographic approach is proposed to capture teachers' and learners' perceptions and behaviors across various pedagogical settings. Building on the work of Stevens, Phlix, and Vanrie (2025), who attributed several ethnographic techniques to the architectural design discipline, we propose a triangulation of ethnographic methods to create a rich picture of users’ experiences. We consider the following techniques. To capture users’ interactions within "in-between spaces", we suggest overt observation to document their daily movement and behavior. Walking paths and activities can be visualized on a floor plan as the underlying map. Then, to gain insight into users' subjective experiences in their learning environments, we consider intuitive drawings to start a discussion with participants about their interpretations of spatial characteristics and functions linked to situational narratives. Additionally, participant immersion techniques, such as eye tracking, are considerable for documenting experiences from their point of view. Finally, the empirical data are expected to consist of observational maps, audiovisual recordings, drawings, and corresponding narratives. We expect to analyze these data using the reflexive approach of ethnographic content analysis. To identify the didactic role of “in-between spaces”, the findings will be reviewed and discussed by three researchers, two with architectural degrees and one with an educational degree. Specifically, this entails the researcher, who holds an architectural background, the co-supervisor, an architectural researcher who dedicates her research practice to the crossover between architecture and pedagogy, and one of the committee members with considerable expertise in inclusive education. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This doctoral research is expected to contribute to the current body of knowledge on the intersection of inclusion, pedagogy, and learning environment design. First, we aim to improve our understanding of the typological functionality of diverse learning spaces through a specific architectural lens. Second, the goal is to provide more empirical data on the design of the learning environment in relation to a diversity of users and didactics. This objective aligns with the need for more empirical evidence thereof, articulated by Mostafa et al. (2023). These aspirations support the aim of conceptualizing the "in-between space" for inclusive education. This conceptualization underlies our argument for a more nuanced discussion of the complexities of the physical learning environment and changing educational conditions. Moreover, the methodological approach highlights a third objective: the growing demand for interdisciplinary collaboration between architectural and pedagogical research fields, as discussed by Cleveland et al. (2025). Therein, we assume the findings will create additional research opportunities concerning the didactic role of learning spaces. By transferring the insights to the pedagogical field, I will co-work with and contribute to the work of Stevens et al. (e.g., Stevens & Balendonck, in press) on the development of a shared language between designers and educators. Given the project’s emphasis on user diversity, we argue that integrating an inclusive perspective will stimulate an extrapolation of our findings to other pedagogical objectives beyond inclusive education.
