Paper Agency of Young People in and for Sustainability: Implications for Environmental Education 1: University of Eastern Finland, Finland; 2: Finnish Environment Institute Presenting Author:Introduction
The current societal landscape is defined by environmental threats and social turmoil. In this wicked poly-crisis, young people, in particular, are in a difficult position. The effects of climate change and biodiversity loss are expected to increase in the future, piling up on young people. At the same time, young people are encouraged to become future agents of change, but their agency is constrained by various structures and forces (Mustalahti et al., 2023). Young people are steered towards participation via formal, adult-controlled platforms that emphasize integration into the current structures of society (Juusola et al., 2023). For young people, these formal structures and institutions may appear constraining and even non-democratic (Dupuis-Déri, 2021). Meanwhile, actions outside these structures are often unaccepted in schools and other local communities (Kettunen, 2021).
Given this landscape of (un)sustainability, this presentation asks: how does young people’s sustainability agency emerge? What are its implications for environmental education? Drawing from social cognitive theory and action competence literature, the goal is to unpack the positions and agency of young people in and for sustainability. In other words, I illustrate the depth, breadth, and contextuality of young people’s sustainability agency. This work summarizes the core findings of my dissertation, comprising four original research articles that utilize both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
Theoretical framework
In recent years, despite the constraints mentioned above, young people have demonstrated their sustainability agency in many ways. Not only have we witnessed the rise of collective youth-led movements (Neas et al., 2022), but research has also identified the transformative potential of young people’s everyday activism (Skovdal & Benwell, 2021). Building on Bandura’s (2001) notion of agency, Koskela & Paloniemi (2023) defined sustainability agency as the overall desire and associated competencies to undertake actions of different modes to contribute to sustainability at various levels and scales. As people’s experiences, action contexts, and sustainability conceptions change over time, sustainability agency involves the need for continuous self-reflection and learning to adjust one’s actions (Koskela & Paloniemi, 2023).
Following the definition above, I understand sustainability agency as a combination of latent capacity and manifest actions. I approach the former using the concept of action competence, which originally describes an educational approach to foster critical, reflective, and pluralistic thinking by which learners can cope with complex sustainability issues (Mogensen & Schnack, 2010). However, Sass et al. (2020, p. 292) redefined action competence as an educational outcome to “articulate the competence of people to engage in solving sustainability issues”. Furthermore, I divide manifest actions into two categories or modes: sustainability behaviours are performed within the private sphere without challenging the current structures, while sustainability actions are usually collective and targeted at the systemic level (Oinonen & Paloniemi, 2023). Thus, the actions of young people range from behavioural modifications, such as changing one’s diet and cycling instead of driving, to social actions, such as volunteering and engaging in prominent collective movements. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This collection of studies uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data includes independently collected surveys of young people from Finland (n = 1009, age = 15–29), England (n=512, age = 15–19), and Italy (n = 702, age = 12–20). These countries form an interesting combination of varying contexts in Europe, representing both Nordic, Anglo-Saxon, and Mediterranean countries. Each survey is freely available online. The surveys included the Self-Perceived Action Competence Questionnaire, which comprises 12 items covering the three sub-constructs of action competence: knowledge of action possibilities, confidence in one’s own influence, and willingness to act (Olsson et al., 2020). In addition, the surveys included items reflecting private sphere sustainability behaviours and collective sustainability actions (Oinonen & Paloniemi, 2023). These constructs were used as a proxy for sustainability agency, considering both latent capacities (action competence) and manifest actions (behaviours and actions), amounting to five latent variables. I analysed the survey datasets using structural equation modelling (Kline, 2016) and mixture modelling (Ferguson et al., 2020). First, I assessed the structure and dimensionality of sustainability action and behaviour. Second, I examined the relationship between the sub-constructs of action competence and different modes of action. Third, I investigated the number and shape of sustainability agency profiles across the three selected countries. Finally, the qualitative analysis is based on workshop and group interview data collected during two sustainability-themed, multidisciplinary learning modules in Finland. In the learning modules, the students participated in an ongoing urban or regional planning process. In the workshops (n=10), the participants (n = 40; age = 13–18) discussed and constructed their understandings of sustainability and reflected on the agency associated with these understandings. The group interviews (n=10), arranged at the end of the learning modules, tapped into the participants’ experiences of participating in urban and regional planning while promoting sustainability. The participants also shared how their notions of sustainability had evolved over the learning modules. I analysed the qualitative data using the concept of frames (Entman, 1993) as a theory-driven, analytical tool. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings First, starting from the qualitative evidence, the results show how young people may construct various meanings of sustainability, and that these “frames” are associated with different modes of action. The context of participation in urban and regional planning makes this interplay visible and demonstrates how young people may shift from one frame to another or abandon participation in favour of their self-enacted agency. Second, the results highlight the role of perceived knowledge in driving or inhibiting sustainability action. Structural equation modelling reveals a negative association between knowledge of action possibilities and sustainability action. I argue that the state of “not knowing” drives young people’s action towards systemic change. Finally, the results come together to outline profiles of young people’s sustainability agency, consisting of the core elements of action competence and the two modes of action. In addition to simple level differences in sustainability agency, the results illustrate patterns in which lower levels of perceived action competence are associated with high engagement in collective, systemic action, and vice versa. For environmental education and research, the results imply the need to be aware and sensitive to the different patterns of sustainability agency―patterns that may shift depending on context―and to adjust educational approaches accordingly. For example, young people who perceive low levels of action competence but already engage in sustainability action may benefit from approaches that support their self-efficacy and highlight dealing with uncertainty and worry. On the other hand, young people who express willingness and confidence but hardly participate in collective action may benefit from action-oriented approaches. References Bandura, A. (2001). Paper The Role of Education in Promoting Environmental Sustainability among Refugee and their host Communities in Uganda University College Dublin, Ireland Presenting Author:Environmental degradation, resource scarcity and protracted displacement increasingly shape the educational realities of refugee-hosting regions (Dryden-Peterson 2024; Dobson et al. 2021). While these dynamics are evident globally, they are particularly pronounced in low-income countries where refugees are commonly accommodated in camps (Bose 2024). In such contexts, refugees and host communities live in close geographic proximity and depend on shared ecological systems that are under growing strain due to population pressure, deforestation, soil erosion and limited access to sustainable energy (Nakalembe et al. 2022). These environmental pressures intersect with educational inequalities, livelihood precarity and socio-political tensions, shaping everyday life and learning for both refugees and host-community learners (Bjørkhaug et al. 2025; Dryden-Peterson 2024). Despite this interdependence, education responses in refugee-hosting contexts have largely prioritised access, inclusion and system alignment, often overlooking the potential role of education in fostering environmental sustainability, collective agency and shared futures (Dryden-Peterson et al. 2019; Dobson et al. 2021; Bose 2024). Environmental Sustainability Education (ESE) offers a critical framework for addressing these intertwined challenges by linking ecological understanding with social justice, participation and shared responsibility (Tryggvason et al. 2022). Drawing on Freirean critical pedagogy and ecopedagogical perspectives (Misiaszek 2023; Jones 2023), this study understands ESE as a dialogical and problem-posing process through which learners critically engage with environmental challenges while examining the social, political and economic conditions that shape their educational experiences (Jones 2023; Tryggvason et al. 2022). Rather than framing sustainability as a matter of individual behaviour change or technical environmental management, this approach foregrounds collective learning, critical consciousness and action-oriented competences (Ardoin et al. 2023). In contexts of forced displacement, such an orientation is particularly important, as environmental challenges are deeply entangled with questions of power, inequality, belonging and access to resources (Dryden-Peterson 2024; Dobson et al. 2021). This study explores the role of ESE in fostering sustainability competences, pro environmental action and social cohesion among refugee and host community learners living in protracted co-settlement contexts in Uganda. While supranational policy makers in the education field such as UNESCO increasingly underscore learning for environmental sustainability, there remains limited empirical research examining how sustainability oriented education is conceptualised (Oe et al. 2022), enacted and experienced within shared refugees-hosts educational spaces. In particular, little is known about how such education operates in contexts of displacement and structural inequality and how it can supports learners’ critical awareness and agency, collective action and negotiated forms of belonging. Conceptually grounded in Freirean critical pedagogy and ecopedagogy, the study positions ESE as both a pedagogical and social process through which learners critically engage with shared environmental challenges, interrogate power relations and construct collective sustainability imaginaries within contexts of protracted displacement settlements (Dryden-Peterson 2024). Adopting a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on in-depth engagement with approximately 20 participants, including refugee and host-community learners and teachers. This sample size enables an depth and contextual sensitivity required to explore complex pedagogical processes and lived experiences in a resource-constrained and socially diverse research setting, while prioritising analytical rather than statistical generalisation. Through participatory and dialogical ecopedagogical practices, the study examines how learners develop sustainability knowledge, critical-system thinking, collaborative-participatory problem solving and collective agency and how co-learning processes can constitutes a possibility for sustainable co-existence. The research hope to broaden debates on inclusion, educational purpose and sustainability in contexts of forced displacement, while also critically illuminating the structural constraints and tensions that shape educational practice under conditions of scarcity and structural inequality. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study focuses on refugee-host co-settlement communities in Uganda. While the term co-settlement communities is not a fixed category in academic literature, it is used here analytically to foreground the relational and spatial interconnectedness of refugees and host communities whose daily realities, vulnerabilities and adaptive capacities are shaped by common socio-educational, socio-ecological and environmental conditions (Nakalembe et al. 2022; Bjørkhaug et al. 2025; Dryden-Peterson et al. 2019). This relational framing builds on scholarship on shared schooling spaces, refugee-host relations and environmental interdependence (Oe et al. 2022; Ardoin et al. 2023; Bjørkhaug et al. 2025). This grounds ESE as a collective concern shaped by relations and interactions rather than an individual or group specific learning. Conceptually, the study draws on the ideas from relational pedagogy which situates teaching and learning as emergent from interactions between learners, educators and their environment (Moran and Richards 2025). The research adopts a qualitative case study design situated within a social constructivist and critical paradigm (Amna Saleem et al. 2021). The case is located in a protracted refugee hosting region in Uganda and includes refugees and host community young people learning together. Schools and educational facilities are conceptualised as part of broader communities of practice in which educators, students, families and local and international organisations engage collaboratively in environmental learning and action (Dryden-Peterson et al. 2019; Bjørkhaug et al. 2025). Framing the research through relational dynamics enables an exploration of how learners’ interaction with peers, teachers and other community actors such as NGOs and families shape their understanding of sustainability, negotiation of responsibilities and participation in collective environmental initiatives. Data are generated through semi-structured interviews with refugee and host-community learners and teachers, alongside classroom and activity observations. This study uses vignettes to explore learners’ relational engagement and co-construction of sustainability knowledge within refugees-hosts educational settings (Mickelsson and Oljans 2025). The study employs reflexive thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning across participants’ accounts while attending to issues of power, positionality and contextual specificity. Particular attention is paid to researcher reflexivity and ethical engagement in a resource-constrained, socially diverse and vulnerable setting. This methodological approach supports an in-depth exploration of learners’ experiences of ESE, the pedagogical practices through which sustainability is addressed and the possibilities and constraints for collective learning and action within refugee–host co-settlements. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study highlights shared environmental challenges as a meaningful entry point for collaborative and dialogue learning between refugee and host-community learners in protracted co-settlement contexts. Participatory ESE practices, including school-based environmental clubs, community projects and dialogical classroom activities, appear to support the development of critical awareness of environmental issues and their social, political and economic dimensions (Tryggvason et al. 2022). These practices enable learners to recognise environmental degradation as a shared problem rather than a group-specific concern and to articulate forms of responsibility that extend beyond individual or community boundaries (Oe et al. 2022). In this sense, ESE demonstrates potential for fostering collective sustainability agency (Finger et al. 2021). At the same time, the study identify structural constraints and significant tensions such as overcrowded classrooms, limited material resources and competitive narratives of inclusion that frame education as a scarce good constrain the scope for sustained engagement with sustainability education (Dobson et al. 2021; Dryden-Peterson 2024). Under such conditions, ESE risks being marginalised unless it is deliberately integrated into everyday teaching and learning practices. Moreover, without careful attention to issues of power, inequality and belonging, participatory approaches may inadvertently reproduce existing hierarchies rather than challenge them, echoing broader concerns about “paradoxes of inclusive exclusion” in refugee education (Dobson et al. 2021). The study hopes to contribute to research on education in protracted co-settlement contexts by foregrounding environmental sustainability as a shared and politically significant dimension of education. It advances ecopedagogical perspectives by demonstrating how ESE can support critical-system thinking, collaborative problem-solving and collective agency when grounded in participatory and dialogical practices (Ardoin et al. 2023). For policy and practice, the study hope to establish that education in refugee-host contexts should move beyond access-oriented models to engage more fully with sustainability, social cohesion and the lived environmental realities of learners. Paper The Paradox of Inaction: Why Sustainability Knowledge Fails to Produce Action Among Students 1: Erasmus University Rotterdam, The Netherlands; 2: Technical University of Delft, The Netherlands; 3: Leiden University, The Netherlands Presenting Author:This paper addresses a central challenge in sustainability education: the gap between environmental awareness and environmental action among students. Despite students knowing about the climate crisis and sustainability, they often fail to translate this knowledge into meaningful behavioral change. While campaigns targeting sustainability have increased, individual carbon footprints remain high, demonstrating that knowledge alone is insufficient to drive behavioral change. A worrying discrepancy remains between environmental awareness and behavioral change. The research question guiding this study is: Why do students from different educational levels (Vocational, Applied Sciences, and University) fail to commit to sustainability, despite being aware of the climate crisis? The theoretical framework integrates insights from environmental psychology and critical pedagogy. Concepts such as cognitive dissonance, eco-anxiety, tokenism, comfort, and responsibility shifting are used to explain why awareness does not automatically result in action. The study employs a mixed-methods approach to identify the cognitive and structural barriers preventing students from acting. The research population included students from three distinct educational levels within the Dutch education system: Vocational, Applied Sciences, and University. This allows for a comparative analysis of how educational background and pedagogical orientations influence sustainability mindsets. Data was collected through a quantitative survey (N=69) using a 5-point Likert scale, followed by semi-structured interviews (N=7) to triangulate findings and provide qualitative depth. The results reveal that the primary barrier to action is not climate skepticism, but a profound feeling of powerlessness. The data shows a common belief that personal sacrifice is meaningless if others do not act too. However, the study also identifies differences in how this inaction manifests across different educational contexts. This research identifies a specific paradox: the belief that individual action is futile in the face of global environmental challenges. University students demonstrated the highest levels of eco-anxiety and theoretical awareness but paradoxically reported deep feelings of paralysis. Their inaction is driven by an over-exposure to the scale of the problem without accompanying practical skills, leading to a reliance on the government to fix the problem. Conversely, Vocational and Applied Sciences students exhibited a form of distancing, arguing that environmental issues are either the responsibility of future generations or will be solved by technological innovation rather than behavioral change. In particular, Vocational students highlighted the unaffordability of sustainable choices as a major barrier. The findings suggest that current educational models are effectively transferring factual knowledge, leading to awareness, but failing to create agency. The study concludes that this knowledge-action gap is sustained by a pedagogical focus on the severity of the crisis rather than the importance of individual influence. These findings have significant implications for educational policy, suggesting that without addressing the psychological barrier of personal insignificance, action may never happen. While empirically grounded in the Netherlands, the study has strong European and international relevance. The paradox of inaction reflects broader dynamics present across European education systems, where sustainability is increasingly integrated into curricula yet struggles to generate behavioral change. By focusing on students’ perceived lack of impact, this research contributes to international debates on how education can move beyond awareness-raising towards empowering learners as active participants in collective sustainability transitions. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed a mixed-methods research design to explore students’ perceptions of sustainability-related inaction and the factors contributing to their sense of individual insignificance. The research was conducted within the context of Dutch post-secondary education, including Vocational, Applied Sciences, and University. The research took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, selecting a diverse sample to ensure representation across the Dutch higher education system. Participants A total of 69 students participated in the quantitative phase of the study: 26 Vocational students, 23 Applied Sciences students, and 20 University students. Participants were recruited in Rotterdam through convenience sampling across multiple institutions, ensuring representation from all three educational levels. For the qualitative phase, seven students were selected for follow-up interviews: three University students, two Applied Sciences students, and two Vocational students. Instruments The primary quantitative instrument was a questionnaire consisting of 14 statements measured on a five-point Likert scale (1 = completely disagree, 5 = completely agree). The statements were designed based on themes identified previously in a literature review, including responsibility attribution, eco-anxiety, financial barriers, habitual behaviour, social norms, and beliefs about technological solutions. Mean scores were calculated for each question across educational levels to allow for comparison. To complement the survey data, semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain deeper insight into students’ reasoning, emotional responses, and lived experiences related to sustainability. Interview questions focused on perceived responsibility, motivation, perceived impact of individual actions, and obstacles to behavioural change. Procedure Firstly, a questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data and identify general trends. Subsequently, participants were invited to an interview to discuss their responses in more detail, allowing for triangulation and qualitative validation of the survey findings. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and thematically analysed. Data Analysis Quantitative data were analysed descriptively, focusing on mean scores and patterns across educational levels. Qualitative data were analysed using thematic analysis, with codes derived both deductively from the literature (e.g. eco-anxiety, cognitive dissonance) and inductively from the interview material. The integration of both data sources enabled an understanding of how shared beliefs and educational contexts shape students’ sustainability-related behaviour. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This research set out to deconstruct the paradox of inaction, analyzing why students aware of the climate crisis struggle to engage in sustainable behaviors. Through a comparative analysis of Vocational, Applied Sciences, and University students, four key conclusions emerge regarding the barriers to action. First, the study confirms that the action insignificance paradox is a fundamental psychological barrier. The data shows that inaction stems from a belief that individual efforts are negligible. This manifests as a collective waiting game, where students defer responsibility to governments or corporations, creating a cycle where no party acts because others are not acting. Second, we conclude that the nature of this inaction is stratified by education level. University students suffer from a paralysis, where high theoretical knowledge leads to increased eco-anxiety and feeling overwhelmed. Conversely, Vocational and Applied Sciences students distance themselves from the problem by believing future technology will resolve it. Third, socio-economic factors act as a justification for inaction. Students universally cited financial constraints and the difficulty of breaking habits as major hurdles. Vocational students, in particular, perceive a disconnect between sustainability goals and their own financial reality, viewing sustainable behavior as a luxury rather than a responsibility. Finally, this study highlights a critical flaw in current sustainability education. By emphasizing the catastrophic scale of climate change without providing tools for individual agency, education is fostering feelings of insignificance. Future research must therefore focus not on informing students of the problem, but on psychological strategies and practical tools to validate the power of the individual within the collective. To respond to the urgent needs created by this crisis, climate change education must be redesigned with an inclusive, holistic, flexible, and locally sensitive approach (Lautensach et al., 2025). Indeed, the need for radical change and action, long emphasized by the scientific community, has reached a critical point today (Lackner et al., 2025). In this transformation process, teachers are undoubtedly the key actors who will both guide strategic design and ensure the development of action-oriented individuals (Tang, 2025). However, the effective transfer of complex scientific and social strategies into the classroom environment primarily depends on the academic qualifications and pedagogical preparation levels of the teachers who will manage these processes (Moshou & Drinia, 2023). Despite the critical role of teachers, the current literature points to a fundamental structural gap regarding the effectiveness of educational processes. Studies show that individuals' theoretical knowledge (literacy) about climate change does not always translate into concrete actions or behavioral intentions; a disconnect, defined in the literature as the knowledge-action gap, exists at this point (Knutti, 2019). There is increasing evidence that the emotional connection individuals form with climate change influences their climate actions, making it necessary to investigate the emotional mechanisms in the process of literacy evolving into behavioral intentions. This highlights the growing importance of holistic models that address cognitive, affective, and behavioral components in climate pedagogy (Olsen et al., 2024). In this context, the research. This study aims to examine, through Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the direct impact of pre-service teachers' environmental literacy on their behavioral intentions to mitigate climate change, and how this relationship is indirectly shaped through hope, one of the ecological emotions. Theoretical background The theoretical basis of this study is the Head–Heart–Hand (HHH) model developed by Sipos, Battisti, and Grimm (2008). This model represents a holistic approach that simultaneously addresses individuals' cognitive learning processes (Head), their capacity for affective connection and meaning-making (Heart), and their ability to translate these acquisitions into action (Hand). The HHH model conceptualizes learning not merely as a process limited to information acquisition, but as a transformative learning process in which information is internalized through emotions and gains meaning through action (Olsen et al., 2024). In this respect, the model aligns with theoretical views that, particularly in complex and multifaceted problem areas involving uncertainty, emotional burden, and ethical responsibility, such as climate change, learning should be evaluated not only in terms of cognitive components but also in terms of emotional and behavioral components (Tsevreni et al., 2025). In this context, the environmental literacy construct examined in the study corresponds to the cognitive dimension (Head) of the HHH model; the ecological hope variable corresponds to the affective dimension (Heart); and the behavioral intention to mitigate climate change corresponds to the action-oriented dimension (Hand). The study aims to test the structural validity of the HHH model in a sample of prospective teachers by examining the direct and indirect relationships between these three constructs. The SEM analyses to be conducted within this scope are expected to contribute to the empirical foundations of the model and to highlight the need to address the cognitive, affective, and behavioral components of climate change education holistically. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In line with the research objective, this study utilized a cross-sectional survey design, a quantitative research method. Cross-sectional design is a type of survey research used to determine the current state of individuals' attitudes, opinions, beliefs, behaviors, or practices at a specific point in time (Creswell, 2019). In this study, environmental literacy was considered as an extrinsic latent variable, while ecological hope and behavioral intentions towards climate change mitigation were considered as intrinsic latent variables. The multifaceted and latent nature of social reality necessitates the use of advanced statistical methods capable of analyzing causal relationships. To analyze the multifaceted structure of social phenomena and the latent processes that cannot be directly observed, the SEM method, which can test complex causal relationships, was adopted (Tarka, 2018). SEM is an advanced multivariate analysis technique that allows for the simultaneous and flexible testing of psychometric and causal relationships between observed and latent variables through theoretically grounded models (Kline, 2015). The study population consists of prospective teachers enrolled in Faculties of Education across Turkey during the 2025–2026 academic year (N = 180,925; YÖK, 2026). The study sample consists of prospective teachers volunteering from the Faculty of Education of a state university in eastern Turkey. The study used a convenience sampling method, commonly used in studies that rely on voluntary participation. While this method offers advantages in terms of accessibility and cost, it is acknowledged to have limitations in the statistical representation of the population (Gliner et al., 2023; Muijs, 2004). According to Cohen et al. (2021), a sample size of 384 people is sufficient for a study with a 95% confidence interval and a 5% margin of error. In the current study, this sample size threshold is exceeded, aiming to reach at least 400 prospective teachers. The data collection tools used in the study were: Atabek-Yiğit et al. The Environmental Literacy Scale developed by (2014), the Climate Change Hope Scale adapted into Turkish by Gezer and İlhan (2020), and the Climate Change Mitigation Behavioral Intentions Scale, whose Turkish validity and reliability study was conducted by Usluer et al. (2023), were used. The agreement between the theoretical model and the data will be evaluated using SEM with maximum likelihood estimation; the mediating role of ecological hope in the relationship between environmental literacy and behavioral intentions to mitigate climate change will be tested with bootstrap-based path analysis. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings In accordance with the proposed model, the findings of this study will reveal that the HHH framework offers a functional and holistic theoretical framework for explaining climate action. In this context, it is expected that pre-service teachers' environmental literacy levels (Head) will have a positive but relatively limited direct effect on their behavioral intentions (Hand) towards mitigating climate change. It is predicted that the relationship in question is significantly strengthened through the ecological hope (Heart) variable, and that the indirect effect is more explanatory than the direct effect. These findings are expected to help explain the knowledge-action gap, a frequently discussed topic in climate change education, through affective mechanisms that go beyond cognitive processes. In particular, ecological hope is thought to function as a critical mediating variable that prevents individuals from experiencing eco-paralysis in the face of uncertainty and the emotional burden of climate change, thereby transforming knowledge into action. The research findings, showing that environmental literacy significantly predicts ecological hope and that ecological hope strongly explains behavioral intentions, demonstrate that the HHH model is empirically supported in a sample of prospective teachers. Based on these expected results, the study suggests that climate education initiatives, which explicitly include emotional components such as ecological hope alongside cognitive and behavioral dimensions, should be restructured as a transformative learning process to help close the knowledge-action gap in climate change education.
