Paper Multimodal Text Universes in Literature Education: A Systematic Literature Review Mälardalen University, Sweden Presenting Author:Imagine a classroom where students don’t just read and write stories—they step into, co-create, and live them. In today’s media landscape, children and young people are surrounded by multimodal texts across books, films, games, and other media, offering narratives in a variety of expressive forms (Svensson, 2022). Understanding how these transmedial text worlds can be leveraged in the classroom is key to supporting students’ boundary-crossing learning. This study contributes knowledge on how transmedial worlds, referred to as text universes in Swedish educational research, can serve as a didactic point of departure for students’ learning in literature education, with a particular focus on fiction reading.
The Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket, 2022) emphasises in the national curriculum for compulsory education that the subject of Swedish should support students’ ability to independently and collaboratively create and process texts, express themselves through varied aesthetic forms, and formulate their own opinions across different media. Students should also be given opportunities to engage in digital communication involving interactive and dynamic texts. On a European level, similar goals are highlighted in the EU’s Council Recommendation on Key Competences for Lifelong Learning (European Union, 2018), where literacy is identified as one of eight key competences supporting personal development, social inclusion, and active citizenship. The framework also emphasises digital competence, understood as the confident and critical use of digital technologies for communication, information processing, and participation in collaborative networks. This underscores the importance of developing students’ linguistic, communicative, critical, and multimodal skills.
Meyerhofer-Parra and González-Martínez (2025) note that transmedia storytelling has increasingly been adopted as a didactic approach in education. In their systematic literature review, they conceptualize the use of transmedia storytelling in educational contexts and note the need for further research from a pedagogical perspective. These findings highlight the importance of investigating how students’ ability to read, interpret, create, and engage with literary texts through multimodal forms of expression can be enhanced in teaching practices that support both the consumption and production of multimodal narratives. At present, there is a lack of systematic literature reviews addressing text-universe-based approaches in literature education. This review, therefore, presents a synthesised overview of the use of text universes, as well as the didactic opportunities and challenges identified in previous research. The review aims to develop a nuanced understanding of how text-universe-based teaching is used in literature education and to analyse the didactic opportunities and challenges that emerge within the research field. The aim is operationalised through the following research question: The study is theoretically grounded in the concept of text universes, which refers to a multimodal repertoire of texts related to the same fictional content across different textual and media formats (Lundström & Svensson, 2020). The concept is related to transmedia storytelling, which describes how narratives are developed and disseminated across multiple media (Jenkins, 2006). Svensson and Lundström (2019) use the concept to illustrate how a storyworld is realised across and within media. A text universe originates from a core text that is expanded as characters, settings, and events are transferred into other textual and media forms, creating multiple re-presentations. Svensson and Haglind (2020) describe text universes as dynamic phenomena without fixed boundaries, continuously re-created through intertextual and intermedial interpretations, and highlight several didactic advantages of working with text universes in school contexts. Against this background, there is a need for a comprehensive overview of how text-universe-based approaches to literary education have been used in previous research. This study is grounded in the above-mentioned theoretical framework and is conducted as a literature review. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study is conducted as a systematic literature review, characterised by a rigorous, structured, and transparent approach. Such reviews focus on a clearly defined research question and are conducted according to a pre-specified protocol, including comprehensive and reproducible searches as well as consistently applied eligibility criteria. The process involves systematic data extraction and quality assessment, followed by a critical analysis or synthesis of the collected material (Covidence, 2025; Hesser & Andersson, 2015). These principles have guided the conduct of the present study. The workflow of the systematic literature review was designed in accordance with the structure described by Cherry et al. (2017) and comprised the following steps: planning; scoping and protocol development; searching; screening of titles and abstracts; retrieval of full texts and full-text selection; theoretical positioning and synthesis planning; data extraction and quality appraisal; and analysis, synthesis, reporting, and dissemination. To minimise the risk of bias, all review stages were conducted using explicit and transparent methods and were collaboratively carried out by a research team of four researchers, encompassing the search, screening, study selection, analysis, and quality assessment. The literature review is configurative and does not aim to identify all existing studies in order to aggregate and summarise evidence. Instead, the criteria allow for the inclusion of heterogeneous studies that together contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon under investigation (Gough & Thomas, 2017). The search, focusing on text-universe-based teaching with a literary focus, was conducted in January 2026 across Web of Science, Scopus, ERIC, Education Research Complete, Teacher Reference Center, and SwePub, yielding 604 records. The search terms targeted two key areas: text universes (fictional universe, text universe, transmedial storyworld, digital storymaking, multimodal text) and literature education (literature education, literature teaching, literature instruction, reading education, reading instruction). To support coordinated interpretation, ensure systematic study selection, and document all decisions for transparency and traceability, Covidence was used as the review management tool. Abstract screening and full-text selection were guided by the following criteria: peer-reviewed studies employing text-universe-based instruction in literature education within formal educational contexts, published after 2005 in English, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, or Russian. Based on this systematic review process, the preliminary findings are presented below. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The aim of this systematic literature review is to develop a nuanced understanding of how multimodal text universes can serve as a point of departure for students’ boundary-crossing learning in literature education, with a focus on fiction reading. Initial searches and preliminary analyses indicate that text-universe-based instruction supports key objectives of contemporary literature education, particularly in a media landscape where students constantly encounter multimodal texts across multiple platforms, with narratives expressed through diverse forms. Preliminary findings suggest that text-universe-based teaching with a literary focus primarily functions as a didactic framework, with the literary text serving as a core for multimodal and transmedial meaning-making. Instruction involves transmedial, collaborative, and contrastive approaches that promote transformative meaning-making, enabling students to reconceptualize narratives through multimodal practices. Through re-presentations expressed in transmedial, multimodal, embodied, simulative, and aesthetic forms, students develop deeper literary understanding, analytical and critical thinking, and narrative and multimodal competences. Furthermore, students are positioned as co-creators in collective aesthetic learning, enhancing engagement and responsibility for literary meaning-making. The reviewed studies indicate that text-universe-based instruction, integrating multiple semiotic resources, dialogic approaches, and multimodal meaning-making, creates a supportive literacy environment. It benefits students struggling with traditional text-based teaching and provides tools to address learner heterogeneity via multiple entry points into literary works. At the same time, findings highlight didactic challenges in balancing creative freedom with sustained textual anchoring, emphasizing the importance of careful instructional design and teacher scaffolding. While these results are preliminary and may be revised as the analysis and synthesis of the complete data set are finalized, they are nonetheless thought-provoking, underscoring the relevance of this systematic review in mapping future research needs regarding the didactic use of text universes in contexts characterized by the increasing mediatization of culture. Paper Receptive Grammar Skills in Early Education: Validating A Group-Based Screening Approach for Inclusive Pedagogy 1: University of Graz, Austria; 2: Humboldt Universität zu Berlin; 3: Universität Paderborn Presenting Author:Grammar skills are essential for communication, literacy, and academic success (Ennemoser et al., 2012; Ulrich, 2017). Diagnosing receptive grammar difficulties in young children is challenging, as these often remain undetected in spontaneous speech but significantly impact language comprehension (Spreer et al., 2019). Before educators can adequately and individually support key grammar competencies, these must first be assessed using standardized tools, since individual and class characteristics often influence teachers' assessment of students' academic abilities (Paleczek et al., 2017). Existing standardized instruments for assessing language comprehension in preschool and school-age children have certain limitations: (1) In German-speaking countries, there is a dearth of receptive grammar tests suitable for group use. (2) Most available tests assume prior knowledge of written language, making them unsuitable for younger children or children with reading difficulties (Lüke et al., 2016). (3) Existing grammar tests (mainly for individual test settings) use grammaticality judgement and multiple choice as prevailing task formats. If many grammatical structures are to be tested, the problem arises that a single task format is repeated up to 90 times, leading to difficulties e.g., a decrease in the child’s attention span as the test progresses (Bailey, 2016). Moreover, individual assessments are difficult to implement in everyday kindergarten and school settings, highlighting the need for group-based procedures (Lüke et al., 2016). Currently, there are few standardized group-based tools for assessing receptive grammar skills in children aged 4 to 8 that do not require literacy skills. The Grammar Skills Group Screening (GraF GruS) addresses this gap by providing educators with a practical solution. This study aims to (a) present the development of the preliminary version of this screening for assessing receptive syntactic and morphological competencies in children aged 4 to 8 years, and (b) validate its psychometric properties. The guiding research question is: Do the various task formats of GraF GruS achieve appropriate reliability and validity? We hypothesize satisfactory internal consistency and convergent correlations with other established test instruments and teacher assessments of language skills. GrafGrus was developed to assess grammar skills in children aged from 5 to 8, incorporating both traditional (e.g., grammatical judgment) and innovative task formats (e.g., connecting tasks, drawing symbols, and choosing symbols for noun gender). This approach enables (kindergarten) teachers to assess different aspects of syntactical and morphological receptive skills. Only when they can assess these skills, they are able to provide informed support for the children facing challenges. Preliminary data indicate that the task formats are child-friendly and well-accepted, with satisfactory reliability observed in individual subtests. Following adaptations to specific subtests, we expect improved reliability across all subtests and satisfactory validity. GraF GruS addresses diagnostic gaps in group-based assessments of receptive grammar and provides a practical foundation for early, informed support in kindergarten and primary school settings. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used First, the study briefly presents the design and item development, the initial piloting with individuals (think-aloud, N=9) and small groups (N=20) as well as the piloting with classrooms and groups of kindergarten children (N= 300). Second, a validation study was conducted in kindergartens (n ≈ 150) during November/December 2025 and in schools (n ≈ 400) during January/February 2026 in Graz, Austria, and Berlin, Germany. Participants included children aged 4 to 8 years from diverse educational settings. Data collection involved administering the GraF GruS tool alongside teacher assessments, two established grammar skills tests, and a reading comprehension test . Psychometric analyses were conducted to evaluate the reliability and validity of the GraF GruS. Internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha, while convergent validity was examined through correlations with other test instruments and teacher assessments. The study adhered to ethical guidelines for research involving children, including informed consent from parents and guardians and ensuring the anonymity of participants. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Initial findings suggest that the task formats are suitable for children and well-received, with individual subtests demonstrating adequate reliability. The expected outcomes of the presented study include the validation of the tool's psychometric properties, specifically its reliability and validity, for assessing receptive syntactic and morphological competencies in children aged 4 to 8 years. It is anticipated that the adapted subtests will demonstrate satisfactory reliability and validity, addressing existing diagnostic gaps in group-based assessments of receptive grammar. The study aims to confirm the tool's suitability for practical use in kindergarten and early primary school settings, providing educators with an effective resource for early identification of grammar difficulties. Ultimately, the GraF GruS is expected to serve as a foundation for informed and targeted interventions, promoting early language development and supporting children's communication, literacy, and academic success. The findings highlight the importance of developing practical, group-based diagnostic tools for early identification of grammar difficulties. GraF GruS provides educators with a valuable resource for informed intervention, addressing a critical gap in early childhood education research. Further research is needed to explore the long-term impact of using GraF GruS in educational settings. Paper Exploring Student-student Interactions in Accomplishing Meaning-making, Epistemic Knowledge and Disciplinary Focus in Small Group Activities: A Conversation Analytic Investigation Griffith University, Australia, Australia Presenting Author:Student group work has held long-accepted importance in classroom organisation and pedagogical design as contributing to learning, participation and social engagement. Internationally, state endorsed curriculum documents and policies validate group work as critical in fostering collaboration, improving communication, and building essential interpersonal skills (see e.g., Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority, 2022; National Curriculum in England, 2013). Over decades, the study of student group activity has sought to show how learning is produced, displayed, and negotiated through social interaction (Fredriksdotter & Norén, 2023; Gillies, 2006; Mercer, 1995). Historically, classroom talk research has predominantly focused on lesson talk where the teacher, as the controlling authority, is present and central to the management of how interactions proceed. Additionally, evidence of the extent to which different interactional configurations (whole class, paired or small group) are more beneficial than others remain limited (Howe & Abedin, 2013). Less prominent in research is the examination of student-student interactional moves when engaging in small group tasks. Examining student group talk and how it accomplishes learning sits within a broad body of research where accounts of classroom talk span numerous theoretical and methodological perspectives. For example, Christie (2005) has presented analyses of talk drawing on Systemic Functional Linguistics; Edwards and Westgate (1994), Alexander (2020), and Mercer and Littleton (2007) have summarised and contrasted socio-cultural, ethnographic and linguistic approaches; and Freebody and Frieberg (2010), Koole (2010) and Macbeth (2011) have drawn on Ethnomethodology/Conversation Analysis (EMCA) to study how classroom talk works as mutually produced sequential courses of action. Broadly, this work illustrates how the social facets of classroom activity are collaboratively produced by teachers and students. These include what counts, moment by moment, as learning and as legitimate displays of knowledge and understanding, how classroom activities are co-managed through attention to interactional detail, how participants hold one another accountable for particular demonstrations of epistemic knowing, and how fine-grained distinctions are drawn and maintained to sustain shared understandings. According to Macbeth (2011) for example, this perspective argues that knowledge is inseparable from ongoing interactional experience, raising analytic questions concerning how ‘new knowledge’ becomes constituted through talk-in-interaction (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson, 1974). This paper presents research capitalising on these foundational ideas focusing on how students in their group activity manage and produce learning-centred talk without teacher presence. Although researchers such as Gillies (2006), Mercer (1995), Szymanski (1999) provide seminal research outlining the importance of group work, they do not specifically address how interaction in small groups is accomplished in practice. Using EMCA, a methodological “road less travelled” in literacy research (Davidson, 2009), the paper seeks to identify the interactional resources employed by students, addressing the taken-for-granted nature of how talk works to accomplish small group activity. To do this, these main research questions are addressed:
From an ethnomethodological perspective, studying the student-talk encountered in group activity aims to provide direct access to how student participants make sense of tasks and topics, coordinate their actions, take responsibility for managing their interactions, and construct shared understandings in real time. It is expected that students use talk to propose ideas, seek clarification, challenge or build on others’ contributions, and manage participation, yet research examining this in close detail is limited. Studying interactional practices aims to reveal how epistemic knowledge, reasoning, and disciplinary understandings are collaboratively accomplished rather than simply individually held (Macbeth, 2011). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study drew on EMCA, a theoretical tradition that emerged from Garfinkel’s (1967) critique of conventional sociological explanations of social order (Boden & Zimmerman, 1991). Garfinkel argued that abstract variables such as institutional roles, rules, social structures, or demographic categories cannot, in themselves, explain how everyday social conduct is produced. Instead, ethnomethodology directs analytic attention to the fine-grained details of talk-in-interaction and to the methods participants use to make sense of, and act within, specific social situations (Boden & Zimmerman, 1991). From this perspective, social realities are not simply shaped by pre-existing structures but are actively “talked into being” through participants’ moment-by-moment interactional practices. Understanding how talk-in-interaction works in different social settings is therefore central since talk itself can be understood as the primary site in which social order is accomplished (Sacks, Schegloff & Jefferson, 1974). The context of the study This paper presents analysis of classroom interactions as produced and managed solely by students as they participated in group literacy activities. This qualitative study was conducted in six middle primary classrooms (8-10 year old students) in three primary schools in rural New South Wales, Australia. After national and local system ethics approval processes were followed, schools were purposively contacted to seek volunteer teachers in schools within reasonable proximity to the researcher (author 1) to participate in the study. Consent from six teachers, their students (between 25-30 students per class) and parents was given. The researcher collected data as a non-participant observer in literacy lessons where small group learning tasks formed part of the typical instructional organisation. Each group involved 4-6 students. Video and audio recordings and researcher field notes were gathered as primary data, and included a total of 80 recorded observations of student-only interactions in literacy focused group tasks. Recordings were viewed, catalogued and selectively transcribed using the transcription notation system developed by Jefferson (2004), commonly used in CA. It enables a fine-grained approach to interactional analysis, making available the examination of turn-taking, repair, alignment, and disagreement to show how authority, expertise, and inclusion are negotiated among students, often in ways that are not captured by outcome measures or individual assessments (Gillies, 2006). Three main corpuses of data were developed to reveal the meaning-making methods the middle-primary students employed in accomplishing small-group tasks, which are managing: dispute, feedback, and re-orientation to task, where, at the same time, each displayed students’ epistemic knowledge (literacy) and on-task disciplinary focus. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Analysing the turn-by-turn sequences of talk produced in student groups made visible the social organisation and interactional resources brought to the task at hand, and how students used these to make sense of the tasks and topics, coordinated their actions to complete their tasks, took responsibility for managing their interactions, and constructed shared understandings. Students were found to use talk to propose ideas, seek clarification, challenge or build on others’ contributions, and manage participation, with CA showing the details of how this was managed through various multi-modal interactional moves including (i) negotiating dispute; (ii) providing and soliciting three forms of feedback; and (iii) using a range of approaches to reorient to and reengage with the set task. The combination of comprehension and sense-making identified in the data were shown to facilitate student-student interactional learning sequences in a meaningful way. Data analysis captured the multi-modal and varied interactional methods employed by students to interact with peers and their task. Embodied actions such as eye gaze, hand gesture, and body language were consistently drawn upon by the students as an interactional resource to engage their peers in the co-production of talk sequences. Other interactional resources such as giving go-aheads, demonstrating recipiency, seeking feedback, providing verbal appeals, conceding and nominating next speaker were employed. The close study of group talk provides an empirical link between pedagogy and learning-in-action. Findings of this study suggest that students can successfully accomplish and make meaning in their small group activity independently of the teacher. Attention to students’ talk has practical implications for teaching by providing insights into how students’ group talk works, deepening understandings of both how learning happens and how classroom practices can better support it.
