Paper Affective Environments as Pathways Enabling Youth Democratic Participation: Lessons from the Critical Change Labs 1: University of Barcelona; 2: University of Barcelona; 3: University of Barcelona Presenting Author:The growing distancing of young people from representative institutions, the weakening of civic trust, and the rise of far-right rhetoric to which they are vulnerable, paint a picture that calls for exploring new pedagogical approaches capable of strengthening democratic cultures. This phenomenon reveals a profound emotional disconnect: for many young people, political and social reality is perceived as distant, alien, and irrelevant to their lives. Faced with this situation, traditional approaches to education for democracy show persistent limitations by prioritising formal knowledge (Zyngier, 2011), which often neglects the emotional and relational dimension where true commitment to eco-social issues is anchored. Commitment arises through an emotional movement that draws us towards the collective. Involvement is rooted in a context, always political, that shapes our desire to act (Stewart, 2007). In this sense, affections, understood as forces circulating between bodies, spaces, and practices that make up both the intimate and the public (Berlant, 1998), operate as catalysts that can reorient the construction of knowledge. From this perspective, and taking up bell hooks “invitation to imagine ‘new and different ways of engaging students” (hooks, 2022), this proposal is guided by the following central research question: How can affections that promote greater social involvement among young people be mobilised through pedagogical practice? To answer this question, we draw on a conception of affect as a force that traverses situations and bodies, modulating their capacity to affect and be affected (Massumi, 2002). It operates as a vibration that reorganises the field of experience and may or may not crystallise into recognisable emotions. It does not reside “within” individuals, but between them, shaping affective atmospheres (Quintana, 2023; Zembylas, 2022). In this sense, creative or artistic pedagogical methods can function as spaces for exposure and encounter, where the personal becomes relational, the relational political, and the political livable (Ahmed, 2014). Michalinos Zembylas (2022) points out that affective environments are inseparable from democratic education, since participatory processes are not only thought out: they are felt, inhabited and embodied (Hickey-Moody, 2013, 2016). Within this framework, our objectives are: (1) To reflect, through the account of three pedagogical scenes from the CCLabs, on how different pedagogical methods can operate as affective triggers; (2) To analyse the translation processes through which the intensities generated in the laboratories are catalysed by pedagogical mediation towards recognisable forms of agency and involvement on the part of the students; (3) To address the need to rethink democratic education as a pedagogical practice that places the affective dimension at the centre as a condition for meaningful engagement. To address this question, this communication builds on the Horizon Europe Democracy Meets Arts: Critical Change Labs for Building Democratic Cultures through Creative and Narrative Practices (CCLAB) project. The CCLAB project is developed by a consortium of ten European institutions. The project aims to identify the challenges of youth democratic participation and develop a pedagogical model capable of addressing them. To this end, it integrates principles of critical pedagogy (Ahmed, 2025; Freire, 2007) with the ChangeLab method (Virkkunen, 2013), incorporating creative, narrative and artistic practices throughout three cycles of Participatory Action Research (PAR). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To address the initial question, this study adopts a qualitative interpretative approach aimed at understanding how different pedagogical methods developed in CCLabs shaped notable forms of involvement and engagement among young people. To this end, three specific scenarios in which this mobilisation was particularly noticeable are described and analysed. The analysis is based on a corpus composed of three internal reports from the CCLAB project, corresponding to the three cycles of Participatory Action Research, as well as field diaries. These documents were prepared by the consortium's researchers based on the implementation of CCLabs in formal and non-formal education contexts. Although they are not ethnographies in the classical sense, they function as situated institutional narratives that capture significant scenes, methods and perceived shifts that marked a change in disposition or generated a verifiable impact on the process (Flanagan, 1954; Kreps, 2018). It is important to emphasise that the project did not initially conceptualise affective-democratic environments as deliberately designed pedagogical elements. However, retrospective analysis of these narratives allows us to identify how certain strategies operated as affective catalysts, revealing a fundamental pedagogical dimension that emerged from the practice itself. From this corpus, three significant scenes were deliberately selected. The selection and description of the scenes focuses on three CCLabs developed in different educational centres in the city of Barcelona. The selection criterion was the intensity of the shift observed: documented episodes were identified in which a significant change in the degree of agency, connection or commitment to the project on the part of the young people was recorded. This selection aims to provide an in-depth analysis of moments in which the use of specific methods revealed their ability to mobilise emotions and reorient involvement. This decision responds to a logic of situated knowledge: the researchers participated directly in these processes and experienced the scenes analysed, which allows for a more refined access to the affective modulations that permeated these situations. This approach acknowledges the complexity and non-linear nature of affective processes and seeks, through the illustrative power of case studies, to offer keys to an affective pedagogy that effectively mobilises student engagement. It also recognises that affective environments cannot be fully controlled; however, they can be modulated, sometimes even inadvertently. The potential risks associated with this situation include the possibility that teachers may be confronted with students' emotional expressions without having sufficient resources to manage them effectively. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The affective dimension has operated as a cross-cutting infrastructure that has conditioned the forms of involvement observed in different contexts. The three scenes are described below: Scene 1: the group decides to work on the theme of ‘affective responsibility’. In the fifth session, we propose a guided visualisation that allows participants to speculate, through mental images, on a transformed society. This method generates an affective connection with the possibilities for change. In the subsequent discussion, we observe a notable shift that translates into concrete proposals with a high level of social commitment, such as a community network map or an affective responsibility manual for families. The exercise acts as a catalyst that redirects the projects towards situated engagement. Scene 2: upon arrival, we encountered significant resistance from the group to participating in the project. They did not connect with the proposed artistic dynamics. However, they underwent a transformation when they went out to do fieldwork. One of the teams, which was addressing insecurity in the underground, physically went to the nearest station to observe the location of cameras and security systems. This act turned abstract research into a lived experience that made them understand the relevance of their topic. The direct encounter with reality outside their usual space generated renewed involvement. Scene 3: The group was marked by very uneven participatory dynamics. Male voices dominated the space. When we proposed that the students develop their own creative project, a shift in agency occurred. The girls' involvement emerged significantly when a space was created where their voices and thoughts became visible and legitimate, activating a participation that had previously been silenced. In this sense, the affective dimension operates as a key condition for democratic learning, enabling participation and agency that transform the abstract relationship with the social into an embodied involvement. Paper Arts-based Educational Research for Transforming Food Value Systems: The Creation of Living Labs in Schools in Catalonia University of Girona, Spain Presenting Author:The research questions are:
The objectives of the research are: - Strengthen the sense of belonging of children (and the educational community) in Salt, with special attention to the Orchards in Salt, through arts-based research. - Strengthen the link between educational communities and the Orchards in Salt through hands-on and plase-based strategiesFood consumption in urban areas is articulated into a highly complex and specialised distribution scheme, with an almost exclusive dependence on long and distant supply chains. In the context of climate change such dependency creates unprecedented and unnecessary pressures on the resource supply, transportation, and logistics, thus challenging the resilience of a system almost exclusively dependent on external supply - with the additional ethical and sustainability questions that arise from increasingly transferring the negative impacts of industrial food production and provision away from cities to other areas (Jensen, P. D., & Orfila, 2021). Additionally, sustainable urban food options, which include e.g., healthy eating, access to green spaces and the equal provision of climate-resilient urban infrastructures (Rutt & Gulsrud, 2016) are often inaccessible to wider portions of the urban population. This is an economic, social, and infrastructural problem, where the poor integration of the urban food system (and related green infrastructure) with the built environment is both a major source of food insecurity (Oscilowicz et al., 2022) and a barrier to the pursuit of environmental justice in cities (Penne, & Goedemé, 2021). Innovative examples of urban strategies for sustainable and healthy food already exist (e.g., the De Cunto et al. “Food in cities” report provided evidence from the Eurocities network in 2017). Cities have demonstrated their central role during the pandemic in ensuring access to food for citizens and supporting retailers (Eurocities, 2021). Local food production and food security has also been on the EU’s agenda, which has - among others - facilitated knowledge exchange between cities on sustainable local food systems through its URBACT network (n.d.). However, consolidated best practices and emerging experimentations remain sporadic, and lack an overarching forum as well as a systemic framework for learning, knowledge exchange, and innovation transfer.
Upon this framework, the European Research project "REDESIGN - transformative food value systems that remodel resilient urban landscapes" (https://horizon-redesign.eu ) aims to identify and develop strategies to transform urban food systems, incorporating local, social, and cultural values, specially to make the local food system inclusive and accessible, fostering environmental justice and food justice in cities through participatory approaches that include vulnerable communities. One of the project’s lines of research focuses on creating three Living Labs in three different European cities. One Living Lab is developed in Salt (Spain), and one of the vulnerable target groups is children. Being aware of the potential of the arts for enhancing understanding (Barone and Eisner, 2012); fostering awareness of ethical dimensions in food production and consumption in communities (Juhola et al., 2024; Roe & Buser, 2016) and children’s engagement and commitment to the current ecological crisis (Bentz & O’Brian, 2019). This paper focuses on the part of the research project developed with schools, and how children and, by extension, the whole educational community can transform their food value systems through developing an arts-educational project. - Raise awareness about healthy habits linked to food systems, addressing the processes of production, transport and consumption. - Influence the transformation of the values of the food systems of the educational community, incorporating criteria of health, sustainability and roots in the territory.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To respond to the challenges exposed, an arts-based research approach (Barone and Eisner, 2012) is proposed. This epistemological approach acknowledges the potential and value of the arts to produce other forms of knowledge - knowledge that cannot be generated through more positivist or conventional qualitative research perspectives (Hernández-Hernández, 2008). This is carried out with the educational community of four schools in Salt. Mainly, we work with groups of children from different grades, aged between 5 and 11, and a group of teachers from the four schools. The fieldwork process is splitted in 2 phases: First phase (February - June 2026): Approaching Food Value Systems with educational communities though arts based methods. Second phase: Co-creating events with educational communities to disseminate from an artistic point of view the experience of the first phase and raise awareness about Food Value Systems among citizens of Salt. Since we are starting the first phase, we have developed arts-based proposals with the aim of contributing to the transformation of the values of the food systems of the educational communities. These proposals include elements of food education covering the entire process of the food chain: from cultivation to harvesting (including visits to orchards of Salt), and consumption of food, including edible and medicinal herbs found in the Hortes de Salt. In detail, we have split the proposals into 3 blocks. Origin of food: the gardens of Salt (7 sessions) The foods we consume: where do they come from? Are they healthy? (3 sessions) Final assessment (3 sessions) The data collected to respond to the two main questions of this paper will be based on the following methods: Questionnaire to be completed at the beginning and at the end of this phase: it will include questions about food habits linked to health Filmic documentation of the pedagogical processes: researchers and the participants will visually document their learning processes with the aim to create material to disseminate the experiences, as well as, to foster group cohesion (Onsès, 2018) Artistic materials created by students: such as herbariums, cartographies, drawings, art installations, etc (Riera-Retamero et al., 2021). Artographic fieldnotes: researchers will register observations and inquiries in a diary that entangles their subjectivity as artists, teachers, and researchers (Blasco Aguirre, 2024; Onsès-Segarra, 2025). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Since the fieldwork has not yet been realized, but it will be by the ECER conference in August, we expect the results to respond to the main questions of the paper while achieving the already mentioned following outcomes: Strengthen the sense of belonging of children (and the educational community) of Orchards in Salt, in a way that they appropriate that urban territory and feel as theirs. Raise awareness about healthy habits linked to food systems, addressing the processes of production, transport and consumption. Changes in the home menus, and also the places where families buy food (local markets, agroshops, groups of consumers, etc.) Influence the transformation of the values of the food systems of the educational community, incorporating criteria of health, sustainability and roots in the territory. Paper Arts-Based Learning for Environmental Education in a Primary Classroom 1: Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University, Turkey (Türkiye); 2: Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa, Turkey (Türkiye) Presenting Author:This study examines the reflections of an arts-based and researcher-designed interactive learning design on students’ environmental awareness within the context of environmental education in the Life Studies course at the third-grade primary school level. In the study, a TouchDesigner-based audio-visual learning environment was designed in order to raise awareness of endangered species. Students’ interaction with this environment was supported through art activities. The research addresses a holistic learning process in which digital interaction, sensory experience, and arts-based learning are brought together. The main research question of this study is “How does an arts-based and interactive digital learning environment influence third-grade primary school students’ awareness of endangered species and the human–nature relationship?” The purpose of this study is to design an innovative digital learning environment for environmental education within the Life Studies course at the primary school level and to examine the reflections of this environment on students’ environmental awareness. The study aims to foster students’ connection with nature through arts-based activities, to create an interactive learning experience through the use of TouchDesigner. This study also aims to present an applicable example of environmental education at the primary school level through a low-code/no-code approach, thereby providing teachers with practical ideas for enriching classroom teaching and learning practices. Conceptual Framework Duncum (2004) states that meaning does not emerge from a single sign but rather from the relationships between signs. In other words, the meaning of an image is not produced solely by the image itself; it is constructed together with the accompanying sound, context, and interaction. In this study, students’ environmental awareness is therefore structured holistically not only through visual images, but also through animal sounds, digital movement, and arts-based activities. Duncum (2004) discusses how sound or text can “anchor” the meaning of an image. For example, cheerful music can render an image joyful, whereas melancholic music has the power to dramatize the same image. The classroom environment designed in this study provides an opportunity to examine how a particular animal sound or digital movement can guide students’ visual perceptions of that animal in this way. Duncum (2004) further argues that the aim of multimodal education is not merely to “experience” different modes, but to “analyze” how these modes influence us. For instance, one may become aware of how music manipulates the viewer’s emotions in a film scene. Building on this perspective, the study goes beyond simply enabling students to experience nature and instead seeks to address questions such as, “When this sound is added, does nature feel more frightening or more friendly?” In this way, it is considered possible to explore how primary school students construct meaning in relation to endangered species. With Duncum’s (2004) understanding of multimodality, this study aims to move art education beyond the purely visual, while simultaneously adapting the Reggio Emilia principle of “the environment as the third teacher” to the digital realm (Aden & Theodotou, 2019; Danko-McGhee & Slutsky, 2017). The designed TouchDesigner environment functions as a “Third Space,” as defined by Aung (2025), creating a setting in which children hybridize scientific environmental knowledge with artistic expression. As emphasized by Narey (2017) and Brooks (2017), art in this study is positioned not as a final product but as a process through which children think and make meaning. Moreover, as noted by Davidson et al. (2017), the multimodal dialogues and embodied responses that emerge during digital interaction demonstrate that environmental awareness is constructed not only cognitively, but also affectively and relationally. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study was designed as a qualitative instrumental case study. Instrumental case studies aim to conduct in-depth analysis through specific cases not for their own sake, but in order to gain insight into a broader phenomenon (Stake, 1995; Yin, 2018). In this research, the practices implemented at the primary school level were treated as a means of understanding the reflections of arts-based learning on environmental awareness. The learning process was structured in line with an arts-based learning approach. In this context, learning is conceptualized as a holistic process experienced by the learner through multiple sensory channels. The TouchDesigner-based interactive environment used in the study was positioned as a third space and was designed to enable students to actively interact with visual and auditory stimuli. In this way, the learning process was transformed into an experience-based structure. From this perspective, the study aligns with the core assumptions of multimodal learning. Indeed, multimodal learning theory emphasizes that meaning is constructed through the relationships between different sign systems and that learning deepens through such interactions (Kress, 2000; Duncum, 2004). In this research, environmental education addressed within the context of the Life Studies course was not treated as a theoretical framework, but rather as a content area in which the arts-based learning approach was applied. Students’ awareness of endangered species was supported through visual, auditory, and artistic experiences, with the aim of addressing environmental issues not only at a cognitive level but also at an affective level. Data were collected through reflective researcher journal, students’ artistic artefacts, classroom observations, and students’ verbal reflections during and after the implementation process. The data were analyzed using content analysis, guided by a multimodal learning perspective. In conclusion, this study constitutes a qualitative research designed as an instrumental case study that demonstrates how an arts-based learning approach can be implemented at the primary school level. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Expected Outcomes This study is expected to deepen third-grade primary school students’ environmental awareness through arts-based learning process. Rather than remaining limited to recognizing environmental concepts at a knowledge level, students are anticipated to redesign these concepts by transitioning between auditory, visual, and kinesthetic modes. This process is expected to contribute to making students’ environmental knowledge more meaningful and enduring, while also fostering conceptual depth. The multimodal learning approach is also considered one of the key outcomes of the study in terms of enhancing inclusivity within the classroom environment. In line with studies highlighting that learning processes relying primarily on verbal language may exclude some students (Narey, 2017; Aung, 2025), this research is expected to provide students with diverse learning styles or limited verbal expression skills opportunities to express themselves through art. This, in turn, is anticipated to make the strengths of students more active participation in the learning process. Consequently, classroom interaction is expected to become more democratic, allowing all students to experience having a “voice” within the learning process. It is further expected that the artistic artefacts produced by students (such as drawings, visual narratives, and models) will render visible their thoughts, emotions, and perceptions regarding endangered species. Through these artefacts, it will be possible to understand how students attribute meaning to environmental issues and what kinds of sensory and affective responses they develop. In summary, by positioning technology (TouchDesigner) as a stimulus and art as an expressive medium, this study is expected to enable students to internalize environmental awareness not merely as information to be acquired, but as an experience that is actively produced. Paper Exploring Learning with Things - a Pan, a Spatula, and Frozen Fish Fillets. Tracing Multisensory Classroom Assemblages in Food Education Aarhus University, Denmark Presenting Author:Learning an aesthetic subject is a sensory endeavour. In the school subject food education, senses are continuously engaged: the students are touching the earthy potato as they peel it under running cold water, looking at onions soften in the pot, inhaling the aroma of bread baking in the oven, and tasting the warm prepared dishes alongside their classmates. Existing educational research in the school subject food education (also called home economics) has primarily focused on teacher practices and syllabus requirements (see, for example (Benn, 2009; Makumbe & Nyevera, 2021; Veka & Djupegot, 2025). But the kitchen classroom is inhabited by a swarm of young people with moving bodies, kitchen tables, stoves, sinks, cutlery, and food - vegetables, legumes, grains, dairy products, meats, and spices. Creative and aesthetic school subjects, such as food education, have historically received limited attention within compulsory schooling. In many countries, food education is often a voluntary after-school activity, particularly in the upper grades (Benn, 2009). In the Danish school system, however, this positioning has begun to shift, as what may be described as a practical turn. For the first time in several decades, the Danish government in 2018 decided to increase the number of lessons allocated to aesthetic subjects in compulsory schooling (Ministry of Education, 2018). As a response to what may be described as a unilateral emphasis on academic skills in literacy and numeracy, greater curricular space has been given to subjects such as sloyd, visual arts, music, and food education. This turn has been articulated in Danish school policy discourse through the concept of practiacy (praksisfaglighed in Danish), which has, since the 2018 initiative, begun to develop as a new pedagogical phenomenon. Practiacy encompasses ambitions for more practical and varied teaching across school subjects, as well as a renewed focus on craft, craftwork, and vocational pathways beyond compulsory schooling (Ravn, 2024). With this new situatedness of the aesthetic school subjects, this paper is based on my PhD project exploring learning with things. The aim of this paper is to explore research creation practices to trace learning processes with things, drawing on posthuman understandings of classroom assemblages as emergent becomings of human and non-human forces and relations (Lenz-Taguchi, 2009; Bennett, 2010; de Freitas, 2012; Deleuze et al., 1987). This paper takes shape through a posthuman and postqualitative inspiration to research, understood as an open-ended process of research creations (Taylor & Hughes, 2016). Rather than approaching knowledge as representation or outcome, inquiry is practiced as something that unfolds through experimental, relational, and more-than-human encounters. Grounded on postfoundational approaches (Gunnarsson & Bodén, 2021; Mazzei & Jackson, 2024), and Deleuzian notions of becoming (Deleuze et al., 1987), research is approached as practices that come into being alongside the worlds it engages. Knowledge is thus understood as situated and emergent, and is becoming through shifting relations among bodies, things, discourses, and affects. Postapproaches challenge human exceptionalism and foreground the significance of more-than-human participants in educational practices (Haraway, 2016). Through this perspective, teaching and learning processes are not pre-given phenomena but are continually made and remade within classroom assemblages as fluid configurations of students, teachers, things, buildings, curricular intentions, and discursive forces (Lenz-Taguchi, 2009; de Freitas, 2012; Murris, 2020). This approach invites attention to how matter comes to matter in school learning. The research question addressed is: How might learning processes with things be explored as classroom assemblages, emerging through shifting relations and affects among human and non-human participants? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Methodology Grounded in understanding of research as a haptic sensorium (Bergstedt, 2021) and in postqualitative methodology as a practice of material and bodily proximity (Gunnarsson & Bodén, 2021), the study employs sensory ethnographic fieldwork (Pink, 2015). Multisensory research practices have been a vital part of fieldwork practices (Howes, 2017). Food education is a multisensory school subject; using the senses is not supplementary but constitutive of learning processes, both for the students and for me as a researcher. Like culinary craft, the subject is inherently multisensory, engaging the senses of taste, smell, touch, sound, movement, and vision. These sensory engagements are central to both the quality of culinary food practices and to how learning processes unfold in the classroom. Consequently, sensing is not approached solely as a methodological concern, but as a part of the curricular and pedagogical content through which knowledge is produced. While multisensory ethnography has developed in response to the historical privileging of the visual in the humanities (Pink, 2015; Howes, 2019), the use of taste as a research method remains relatively underexplored. In this study, tasting is approached as both object and mode of inquiry. Drawing on taste as social (Counihan & Højlund, 2018) and Sutton’s anthropology of cooking (2015), tasting is understood as material and relational practices. Investigating tasting and investigating through tasting thus become entangled, allowing learning processes to be explored as sensory, collective, and emergent events. Grounded in an interest in school practices, this paper is based on experiences of empirical production that took shape through fieldwork in over 18 months in three lower secondary public schools in Denmark, as I followed school practices in food education classes in Grades 7–8. The students were young people aged 13-15, and the teachers were trained educators specialising in food education. The fieldwork comprises 93 lessons, and I followed 24 students through their practical and oral examinations. Throughout the fieldwork, attention was directed toward learning and teaching with things - how students’ and teachers’ practical doings took shape through their shifting relations with the kitchen classroom and its multiple materialities, including food items, kitchen utensils, and cookers. The fieldwork is documented through approximately 2,500 photographic fieldnotes, complemented by written fieldnotes. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Expected outcomes This paper explores how learning processes with things may be explored as classroom assemblages, emerging through shifting relations and affects among human and non-human participants. The paper’s expected outcomes elaborate on two interconnected knots: a) Becoming with kitchen practices Investigating a practical school subject - as practical - calls for a researcher who is likewise practically engaged, as knowledge in the haptic sensorium comes into being with and through the researcher’s body (Bergstedt, 2021). Rather than fully participating in cooking, which often produced asymmetrical collaborations due to my professional cooking skills, I attuned myself to the practical rhythms of food education by moving curiously through the kitchen classroom with my camera while students cooked, engaging in brief conversations along the way. When it was time to eat, I invited myself to join a group at the table. Eating together enabled me to taste the same food as the students and to take part in their conversations about dishes and flavours. Each shared meal became a small research-creation event when students photographed me eating their food, folding my body into the empirical assemblage. b) Capturing thing-power in the classroom The empirical material, photographic and written fieldnotes, was approached not as representational data but as active participants in the research process. The analyses attend to classroom assemblages in which bodies, things, and spaces come into relation and take shape through practice. Photographic fieldnotes played a central role in foregrounding material forces and spatial intensities, the thing-power, of these assemblages. Drawing on the method of following things (Woodward, 2022), I photographed not only human activity but also the doings of objects and rooms. In this way, material arrangements and transformations guided analytical attention, positioning things and spaces as active contributors to the becoming of teaching situations rather than as background context.
