Paper Envisioning Research Methodology Teaching and Learning in 2050: Insights from Education Researchers' Focus Group Analysis 1: Klaipėda University, Lithuania; 2: Klaipėda University, Lithuania Presenting Author:Today, due to the rapid global changes, including technological innovation, intercultural collaboration, the integration of artificial intelligence, the teaching and learning of research methodologies in education are fundamentally reshaping. At the forefront of this transformation is generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), which enables faster management of scientific knowledge and sophisticated analysis of complex datasets (OECD, 2026). This technological shift is ushering in the era of big data and AI algorithms, capable of detecting various patterns and connections (OECD, 2026). Also, there is an increase a diverse of methods, such as experimental designs, cross-sectional quantitative studies, etc. (OECD, 2025). Under these conditions, researchers need to strengthen their research competence (European Commission, 2021), which can be achieved through continuous lifelong learning, as teaching and learning opportunities for researchers are increasingly expanding (OECD, 2024). For example, in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), research-based teaching and researcher training are considered essential components of academic quality assurance, in line with the Bologna Process’s provisions on integrating teaching and research (European Commission, 2024). In this way, the doctoral studies and professional development of researchers must be based on the ability to transfer knowledge of research methodology to others, thereby forming a new role of the "researcher-teacher" (European Commission, 2023). Given these expanding pathways, it becomes important to understand what is already known about teaching and learning of research methodologies. Many aspects, such as the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation of educational researchers to learn research methodologies (Gough, 1998), the personality characteristics that determine the successes and failures of learning research methodologies (Pather, 2019), the use of research methods (Wang et al., 2019) have been sufficiently analysed. Other researchers (Park, 2020; Matos et al., 2023; Argote et al., 2021; Lewthwaite & Nind, 2016, etc.) focus on the teaching and learning of research methodologies. Lewthwaite and Nind (2016) emphasise that education researchers themselves often lack confidence in their methodological skills, which affects their ability to teach effectively. It aligns with Matos et al.'s (2023) insights that, in teaching, still-dominant pitfalls such as limited pedagogical innovation (e.g., reliance on textbook-based teaching), teacher biases that may restrict learners’ critical engagement with different methodological approaches, and insufficient methodological knowledge among teachers. Meanwhile, Argote et al. (2021) point out that members of organisations often learn better from failures than successes because failures encourage a deeper search for causes; thus, analysing methodological mistakes becomes an effective way for learning. The year 2050 may be conceptualised as the threshold of a new era, marking the emergence of novel strategies, renewed visions that respond to evolving global, technological, and socio-cultural transformations. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The participants and their sample. The participants were selected through purposeful sampling (Stratton, 2024). The participants were experts in education who were familiar with teaching and learning research methodologies: a) research methodology lecturers teaching doctoral students; b) professors/senior researchers, who are active in research; c) doctoral supervisors; d) postdoctoral supervisors; e) associate professors, who are scientific project managers and conduct scientific research, teach research methodologies; f) active researchers from other fields studying educational phenomena. Thus, in this research, 30 researchers from various Lithuanian universities participated. Data collection method. A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) is a qualitative research method and data collection technique in which a selected group of people discusses a given topic or issue in depth, under the guidance of moderators (van Eeuwijk & Angehrn, 2017). Krueger (1994) recommends using ‘mini-focus groups,’ consisting of 3–5 participants, when participants have specialised knowledge and/or experiences to discuss within the group. Thus, seven mini-focus groups, each consisting of 3–5 experts, were provided. As Onwuegbuzie et al. (2009) indicate, the ideal time for a focus group is 1–2 hours. Thus, the total time of the seven groups was about 11 hours. Focus group discussions lasted until the data saturation was reached (Saunders et al., 2018). The Focus groups discussion was conducted online via Microsoft Teams. In line with the study’s aim, the education experts were asked: How do you imagine the teaching and learning of research methodologies for education researchers in 2050? Also, during the discussions, the expression of diverse opinions of research participants was encouraged. Data analysis method. The data were analysed using reflective thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2019; 2020), following six iterative steps while emphasising the researchers’ reflexivity at each stage. To disclose themes, we drew on our reflections. The disclosed themes were integrated into a narrative supported by illustrative quotes, explicitly acknowledging that meaning was co-constructed through the researchers’ reflective engagement with the data, demonstrating that reflective thematic analysis is an interpretative, reflexive process rather than a purely objective exercise. Research ethics. Research ethics were guided by Sim and Waterfield (2019), core principles: respect autonomy, confidentiality, non-maleficence, beneficence, justice and researcher responsibility. In the informed consent process, participants were clearly informed about the unpredictable and public nature of group interaction and the inherent limits of confidentiality. Each participant provided consent to participate in the study. This research was approved by the Ethical Committee of the university. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This research identified key themes in teaching and learning based on the research participants’ opinions. The first theme, "The teacher as a methodological curator and coach," reflects participants’ view that in 2050, teachers will act as personal mentors, helping learners reach their potential. The second theme, "Teaching through 'living labs and real-time data," discloses participants’ thoughts that teaching will be conducted in "living laboratories" here and now, where technology, researchers, and research participants become co-authors. The theme "AI integration in teaching" underscores that artificial intelligence will become a constant research partner, and its management will become a basic competence for researchers. "Value backbone: Ethics as continuous practical reflection" emphasises ethical sensitivity, in which ethics becomes a daily mindset for the researcher. The first learning theme, "Personalised and self-directed learning trajectories," reveals participants’ opinion that learning will become fully individualised, responding to the cognitive and emotional needs of the learner. The theme "Learning symbiosis with AI assistant" discloses participants’ beliefs that in 2050, AI will handle "black" work, letting researchers focus on methodological creativity." The third theme, "Methodological 'Jazz' and hybridity," emphasises that learning will be understood as the ability to improvise (jazz) with strong basic foundations. This learning will create unique, hybrid research designs and integrate various interdisciplinary methods. The theme ""Unlearning" and returning to basics" discloses that in 2050, researchers will "unlearn" technical subjects to return to fundamental values: critical thinking, philosophical logic, human intuition. Practical value: The results of this study will be applied to a Delphi study. This will enable the creation of teaching and learning scenarios for educational researchers in 2050. The findings can be used for strategic planning, curriculum innovation, and policy-oriented decision-making in researcher development programs. Paper Experiencing Fictitious States in an Experimental Text-Based Narrative Environment: The Effects of Public Sector Quality and Corruption on Attitudes University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany Presenting Author:In recent years, European societies have been shaped by multi-crises omnipresent in the public discourses. Climate change, demographic aging, migration flows, refugee influx, and a changing world economy are only some elements of the multitude of structural challenges our societies are confronted with. Public discourses in Europe and other Western democracies suffer from continuous political polarization. In such conflictual times it is fundamental for democracies to enable its citizens to understand the living realities of their social environment and also potential future paths their societies and states could develop along. This study uses a novel methodological approach to simulate complex real-world socio-economic environments by letting participants experience personal living realities as a citizen of a fictional state. They make decisions as a person living through fictional situations embedded into a coherent narrative of an everyday life. We apply this narrative in a pre-registered experimental case study to evaluate how people react to such a coherent narrative setup. Substantively, we test propositions grounded in a social contract model, which explains citizens’ behaviour towards the state within the context of their perceived reciprocal relationships between the state, other citizens, and themselves. We model how citizens behave if they perceive the social contract as being broken by the state, because it does not provide services of a decent quality anymore. By doing so, participants personally experience the consequences of deteriorating public services as a result of increasing pressure on public institutions, such as those which Western democracies are currently confronted with. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Using an online vignette environment within a virtual state we call Novaland, we examine how variations in public-service quality and corruption affect political solidarity in a pre-registered experimental cases study. We utilize a text- and image-based setup within an online survey. Participants are confronted with vignettes embedded into a coherent narrative of an everyday life in the fictional country. Participants make positive, negative, or negative-and-corrupt public service delivery experiences and engage in everyday activities, ensuring immersive and attentive participation. We also measure participants survey-taking behaviour and post-experimental attitude changes conditioned on their experimental treatment. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Methodologically, our findings underscore the potential of the novel virtual state methodology to simulate complex real-world environments. By experiencing a fictional everyday life within a coherent narrative framework, participants gain first-hand impressions of the living realities of different societal groups or within a different economic and political environment. The virtual state approach might thus contribute to increase understanding and solidarity within European democracies. We discuss its potential for education and policy development. Substantively, we show that support for domain-specific state spending increases under poor service delivery, but support increases less when corruption is present besides poor service delivery alone. This support seems not to translate into a demand for more general welfare spending. Political trust declines over time when quality is low, especially when corruption is present. Our findings underscore the importance of equitable and efficient public services in maintaining both political solidarity and trust. As public service quality declines in many European states, our study suggests that unmet public expectations risk eroding political solidarity in public domains and political trust. Paper Critical thinking and the Development of European Shared Values The contribution of Non formal pedagogies in Preservice teacher education. 1: Universidad Católica de Valencia San Vicente, Spain; 2: Universidad de Barcelona; 3: Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona Presenting Author:Introduction The role of education in determining the values and principles that shape the character of society is fundamental. This fact is acknowledged by the EU in numerous policy declaration such as the Paris Declaration (2015) signed by the 28 EU ministers of education, which establishes as an educational priority in its first objective the acquisition of "civic, social, and intercultural competences, promoting democratic values and fundamental rights, social inclusion and non-discrimination, as well as active citizenship" (EACE, 2016). This declaration is a pivotal statement of the EU in recognizing the need for intercultural competencies for learners to achieve an inclusive European society. The study on teaching common European values (Veugelers et al., 2017) emphasizes the commitment required by the MS in order to teach tolerance and common values that guarantee the sustainability of the EU values highlighting the fact that “beside Tolerance concepts with more positive attitudes such as appreciation, pluralism, and respectful engagement should be used.( Veugelers et al., 2017)”. Teacher education for the development of intercultural and democratic competences thus is essential and requires teachers who value Human Dignity, Human Rights and acknowledge cultural diversity as an asset. Conceptual framework: Critical thinking is an essential skill for embracing cultural diversity and a key component in the development of intercultural and democratic competences. It is a fundamental tool for fostering intercultural dialogue and social cohesion.. Scholars acknowledge the challenge of reaching a consensual conceptual definition and consequently criteria for assessing the attainment of critical thinking. Following McPeck (1981) Critical thinking can only be properly developed when it is produced in relation to a specific subject or topic and, fundamentally, through the individual’s capacity to elaborate specific questions related to these same situations, thus linking the formulation of questions to the process of reasoning and assessment skills. Brookfield (1987) with his conceptual input contributes to the definition by identifying three key elements for the development of critical thinking: emancipatory learning, dialectical thinking and reflective learning. This author, aligned with Dewey’s definition of Reflexive thought, underlines the dimension of process in the attainment of critical thinking. The second approach represents an opposite perspective and originated in Freire’s critical pedagogy. In this case critical thinking is the origin for social change and transformation (Freire, 1998; Papastephanou and Angeli, 2007; Lim, 2015). However, both Burbules and Berk considered both views to be limited and proposed an expanded notion of criticality (Burbules and Berk, 1999; Barnett, 1997, 2000, 2003). It is worth mentioning Barnett (1997) provides a comprehensive view of critical thinking by placing it at the convergence of three elements: reasoning associated with knowledge, self-reflection centred on the subject, and critical action oriented towards the surrounding world. However, in this study a comprehensive definition is provided very much aligned with the conceptual understating of Criticality. The Intercultural Learning Exchange through Global Education, Networking and Dialogue (ILEAGEND) is a Joint program of the European Union and the Council of Europe which is focused on capacity building of young people through global and intercultural education aiming at developing a more inclusive society. In this context, the IMAGINE project: LEARNING TO LIVE TOGETHER (implemented between 2021-2025) was conceived. This seminar integrates intercultural education and non-formal pedagogy principles. More specifically, the IMAGINE seminar engages learners especially with the development of
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The case study methodology stems from the concern for a deep understanding of a single case or several cases in their natural context (e.g., D.B. Bromley, 1986, p. 1). The purpose of in-depth case studies is to provide valuable and complex insights that can lead to new learning beyond what was previously known. The methodology of the case studies, by definition, focuses on understanding the specific and logic of social relations and practices that intersect in the social space that has been defined as a case. The case study offers an interpretation made in the light of a theoretical framework taking into consideration geographic, social, cultural, economic and historical context. However, the focus of the case study is to capture the context and any aspect of the social reality as it is perceived by the social actors involved. For this reason, the main approach of the case study is qualitative and inductive (part of reality to be conceptualised later) and, therefore, it is important to emphasise the idiosyncratic aspects related to the particularity of the practice that is being analysed General objective Identify the innovation, transferability and educational impact dimensions in the IMAGINE project in relation to the development of Criticality and sense of belonging among the participants. The main research question of this case study explores What kind of innovative practices related to the non-formal and critical pedagogy contribute to the development of Criticality and IDC development in initial teacher education . In this sense it explores also Which innovative practices within culturally diverse contexts have overcome known obstacles and barriers for criticality development and how it fosters shared sense of EU values Specific objectives: 1.To identify the cognitive and emotional process that permits pre-service teachers to engage in critical thinking and develop knowledge that fosters criticality 2.To explore how can non-formal education engage `Preservice teachers in meaningful learning leading to non-racialized understanding of identity 4.To demonstrate the role of non-formal education and pedagogical approach enhances the development of IDC This case study applies in depth interviews , focal groups and content analysis of written evidence in order to establish the efficacy, transferability and sustainability of the Imagine project .Furthermore, as an educational innovative proposal, sustained conceptually by the INNO4DIV research study ( 2019-2023), this intervention focuses on the application of an assessment of non-formal education pedagogy and methodological approaches in relation to the development criticality. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Bonding as a group: The bonds established among the participants was extraordinary. This fact is partially due to the selection process of candidate. The organizing team was very careful to choose participants who demonstrate a prior commitment to social justice issues and required a recommendation letter regarding their social and interpersonal skills and experience. Organizers also assured a gender and aged balance in order to facilitate a healthy and balanced groups dynamic. All participants thus shared a respectful and inclusive vision of the world, and their dialogue served as a way of feeding each other. From each new contribution, many others emerged. Non formal pedagogy and the creation of shared values The facilitators created a safe a non-judgmental space for continuance dialogue a fact which encouraged the participation of all and made them feel empowered. Participants were excited about the seminar and expressed their eagerness to continue to grow together and to consolidate the project and the network. They realized how much they have in common Sustainability and the creation of young interculturalist youth network: This seminar has been the departure point for the consolidating an intercultural youth network which is committed to enhance cultural diversity and to minimize prejudice and discrimination. At the end of the seminar participants were given time to propose ideas and to establish thematic subgroups for the implementation of social justice and Global education related initiatives. Participants expressed their commitment and interest in caring out activities and maintain their engagement with the network. Motivation and participation were evident during the workshops and the conclusive final proposals gave indications that the impact in long-term is going to be as expected References Bromley, D. B. Paper Technology-Based Learning Environments: Perspectives of International Students at a Specialised University 1: Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, Lithuania; 2: Kaunas University of Technology Presenting Author:The 21st century is unimaginable without media and information flow, and children who are currently learning have a different approach to learning and learning tools than their teachers or parents (Bakonis, 2014). These young people are already entering universities today. In recent decades, the world has focused on integrating information technologies into educational curricula to adapt to the changing technological world. Schools are being equipped with computers and software to engage students and make it easier for them to complete their assignments. However, the use of technology alone is not enough to ensure proper and high-quality teaching and learning. The changes are rapid and significant. The concept of Education 5.0 is related to a new approach to education that reflects the changes emerging alongside the concepts of Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0. This educational paradigm emphasizes the rapid penetration of new technologies into all areas of human life. The result of this penetration is the collaboration between humans and advanced technologies to streamline learning processes and meet the changing needs of society and the labor market. The authors highlight the following aspects: personalized learning, the ability to work with technologies and data, sustainability, resilience, and social responsibility (Supriya et al., 2024; Vitanova, 2023; Sharareh et al., 2024; Yuliana, 2025). Education 5.0 encompasses various dimensions, including the ability to adapt to uncertainty, critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, and collaboration. This paradigm promotes higher-level thinking skills such as analysis, evaluation, and creation. It can be said that technological literacy is as important to today's students and teachers as reading, writing, and arithmetic were 150 years ago. Technological literacy encompasses three interrelated dimensions: knowledge, ways of thinking and acting, and skills. The promotion of technological literacy characterises the characteristics of an organisation that provides its members with the necessary resources and knowledge required to work with information technologies (Kot, 2022). According to Kot (2022) today's working environment becomes very stressful due to the rapidly changing information and communication technologies (ICT) used in the work process. According Ng (2019) some of the most important cognitive skills in the 21st century is information processing, i.e., data interpretation and data analysis (identifying, collecting, processing, and using relevant data to make decisions); critical, creative, and analytical thinking; problem-solving skills; scientific investigation; design thinking, creativity and innovation; computational thinking and ICT. In summary, this set of competencies is needed in our current and future lives and careers. Education 4.0 and Education 5.0 are examples of the penetration of technology into the field of education. Thanks to technology, university intranet systems are being created. They enable students and teachers to collaborate in the virtual document management and learning environments of a particular university. Each university has its own virtual communication, document management, and learning environments, which can be described as specific virtual subcultures that are characteristic of a particular university. This creates new opportunities and new challenges. Communication can be fast and remote. The student community is a rapidly changing community, with new first-year students joining every year. They need to integrate into the community and use the community's virtual information systems. Summarising the insights of various authors, it can be said that Education 4.0 and Education 5.0 are characterised by technological change, which influences students' and teachers' activities and attitudes towards technology-based learning. Therefore, it is important to observe and study the human factor. Aim: to reveal the attitudes of international students towards activities (adaptation) in the virtual communication and learning environment of a specialised university as a subculture. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In this case, the selected research group is international students. What challenges do they face? When working with international students, we have already noticed certain problems. Therefore, it is appropriate to discuss them, identify them and look for solutions by combining available technical capabilities, teachers' attitudes and students' attitudes. Research methods: This research employs the analysis of scientific literature, qualitative research, and case study. It is based on theoretical positions that highlight constructivist attitudes (Vygotsky's Sociocultural Theory), educational environments conducive to student empowerment in the distance learning system, the prerequisites for the emergence of deep learning, the specificity of modern learning and higher education, and constructivism, which describes learning as a process of seeking knowledge, i.e., a process of combining specialised information sources (Barnett, 1999; Juceviciene et. al., 2010; Butrime, Zuzeviciute, 2014) and adult learning theory (Petty, 2006) based on needs and interests, useful learning materials, life-related situations, and learning-enhancing environments, and the theory of waves of social development (Toffler, 1981). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study concludes that a portion of international first-year students requires tailored assistance to initiate effective use of the university intranet, communication channels, document management tools, and the virtual learning environment. Variability in prior digital experience materially affects the pace and quality of adoption of institutional technologies. Students frequently default to external platforms with which they are more familiar, a behavior that reveals substantive gaps in technological literacy and computational thinking competencies. Human factors further influence technology-mediated learning. While some students prioritize traditional, face-to-face modes of interaction, others prefer remote participation. Practices established during the pandemic have been institutionalized to a degree, enabling students who arrive late for legitimate reasons to participate in lectures remotely. Anticipated outcomes of targeted interventions include accelerated onboarding, increased engagement with institutional platforms, improved digital competency profiles, and more equitable access to instruction through well-structured hybrid options. Implications for practice include the development of comprehensive onboarding frameworks, integration of transferable digital literacy and computational thinking modules into first-year curricula, and refinement of hybrid participation policies to ensure both flexibility and academic rigor. Implications for research include examining causal pathways between prior digital experience and platform adoption, evaluating the efficacy of tiered literacy interventions, and assessing the long-term effects of hybrid participation on learning outcomes, sense of belonging, and academic persistence.
