30. Environmental and Sustainability Education Research (ESER)
Paper ESE Quality in Troubled Times 1: Danish School of Education, Aarhus University; 2: University of Southern Denmark; 3: University College London; 4: King's College London; 5: Monash University Presenting Author:This presentation extends insights developed in a large-scale Nordic research project Education and the Green transition: Exploring Qualities in Sustainability Education (Brückner, Lysgaard, Elf, & Reid, 2025), to ask the question: how do rapid changes in sustainability and geopolitical agendas force educators and ESE researchers to think and practice differently with regard to notions of quality ESE (Elf et al. 2026)? While the aforementioned project builds on a didactical understanding of how to view and conceptualize multiple approaches to quality in ESE teaching, this presentation goes beyond that scope and its findings in explore how such perspectives are embedded in, destabilized by and potentially strengthened through contextual, political and societal changes across the Nordic region and globally. Our point of departure is to re-examine understanding of the concept of quality as multidimensional (Elf, 2021) in the sense that it can be framed as being in tension between three aspects. First, “prescribed quality”, often in the form of theories, norms, and policy. Second, “documented quality”, such as arising from empirical data from qualitative and quantitative studies and assessment. And third, “experienced quality” in terms of impressions and atmospheres experienced by participants in specific situations. A central part of our argument is that “experienced quality” often is underrepresented and less emphasized when it comes to ongoing discussions of different forms of prescribed and ambitions to document quality (Brückner et al., 2025). Working with this in research and practice development settings from qualitative and quantitative perspectives, for example, in trying to understand the role of experienced quality in shaping priorities for policy and provision, reveals that young people’s interactions with environmental and sustainability teaching and dilemmas are frequently overlooked in recent thinking and analysis, e.g. in so-called ‘Greening Education Partnerships’ (see UNESCO, 2026) focusing on greening schools, curriculum, teacher training and education system capacities, and communities. The Nordic research project has influenced and drawn the multi-national presenters into different directions and raised new questions in relation to how it is possible to understand this multidimensional perspective on ESE quality in the face of the poly crisis that continues to unravel nationally and globally (Elf et al., 2026). For example, the second term of President Trump has put ESE teaching in the United States and in European settings under severe pressure and has strained resources in this already underfunded area. This situation adds further complexity to the affective entanglements – uneasiness, capacity limits, structural impediments, incongruent agendas and compromises – that already shape teachers’ ESE practice and affect their students and school communities (e.g., Greer & Glackin, forthcoming). Together, we argue that while changes in policy and leadership, and new professional development and curriculum are needed, such structures must recognise the complexity and the importance of ‘experienced quality’ of teaching amidst the socio-ecological crisis. This further emphasises how a revitalised notion of Bildung can be used to draw in a greater plethora of subjects when dealing with ESE issues that, to a growing extent, show themselves as outside of the grip of individual school subjects (Elf & Andersen, 2026-2029). In sum, the presentation proposes that socio-ecological crises have been a central aspect of the ESE field, but that times are changing in the sense that the acceptance and severity of these crises appear simultaneously mainstreamed and marginalised in various policy and practice discourses (Lysgaard & Reid 2026). This situation invites further questions and inquiry regarding how ESE researchers identify the field and its role in shaping education on a more general level, while accepting that the “poly-crisis” that has been a ESE fixture has now materialized across the globe.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The aim of this work is to establish a stronger understanding of how to develop and influence new understandings of quality ESE in times of rapid change. The paper builds on insights drawn from the aforementioned large-scale Nordic research project building qualitative and quantitative empirical data from schools (Lysgaard & Gericke, 2023; Lysgaard & Tryggvason, 2024; Elf et al., 2026) complemented by a series of interviews with three secondary school teachers in England (Greer and Glackin, forthcoming). The paper leverages insights from both strands to ask analytical questions of how perspectives on quality ESE can be understood and resonate in current times of ‘polyresins’ of ecologies, politics and economics. Based on pragmatic philosophical inquiry and educational research, our theoretical framework mobilises an eco-systemic and praxiological approach to quality in teaching and education (Breidenstein et al., 2025; Kemmis & Summons, 2012). The presentation builds an argument on three levels: 1) the continued importance of acknowledging teachers’ [and students’?] experienced affective entanglements as embedded within ESE in times of crisis, and 2) the use of the concept of Bildung to build bridges across different subjects in order to better support quality ESE and 3) the possibility of drawing on and challenging the history and current state of the ESE field in order to think beyond beyond mainstream educational practice, policy and research, even though it might be tricky and painful. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The paper showcases how it is possible to build on a specific emphasis on schools, classrooms and didactics to continue the discussions of the relevance of experienced, cross- and transdisciplinary ESE practices in efforts to draw on the insights from the ESE field and ensure the relevance and potential in a wider educational setting. The ambition is to discuss ways forward for ESE and related understanding of quality emphasizing that this is no easy or linear path, nor that there are singular solutions, but the need for reflective, reflexive processes where teachers and researchers iteratively transform themselves within a system, and in relation with others and surrounding poly-crisis. Paper Worlding Through Words: the Purpose and Possibilities of Multi-register Writing as Research Method University of Cambridge, United Kingdom Presenting Author:The Network 30 special call outlines global poly-crises as complex and connected, suggesting that singular epistemic frameworks are insufficient in providing comprehensive responses. Indeed, scholars increasingly urge for the development of approaches to research through epistemic expansion to more adequately navigate these challenges (e.g. Escobar, 2018). There is broad recognition within the ESE field that to avoid perpetuating the same epistemic enclosure that has created the conditions for such poly-crises, research approaches can challenge habitual methodologies by taking into account pluriversal approaches to knowledge-creation practices (Kumalo, 2017; Nesterova, 2020). In response, this paper asks what methods might help us identify and resist epistemic enclosure within research and how might doing so create possibilities for epistemic expansion?
To approach these questions, a moment from a 2014 novel, Annihilation, by Jeff VanderMeer offers an apt provocation in describing a team of researchers attempting to study and understand an unknown invasive species. When confronted with such an incomprehensible ecological phenomenon, one of the researchers in the book concludes, "If I don’t have real answers, it is because we still don’t know what questions to ask. Our instruments are useless, our methodology broken, our motivations selfish" (p.192). It is to this that I turn when considering the role of ESE research in a time of poly-crisis. How might we approach research in ways that creates possibilities for different questions, or different kinds of questions to be asked?
This paper presents multi-register writing as a methodological approach to this challenge. Multi-register writing refers to research practices that deliberately work across different “registers” of writing, using, for example, poetry or fiction alongside more traditional modes of academic writing within the same inquiry. Using the context of a rich variety of texts that demonstrate multi-register writing, I conduct a close examination of a section from an ESE doctoral thesis that includes fictioning alongside academic style writing. In doing so, I present the purpose and possibilities of situating these different registers together in research writing to contribute an analysis of multi-register writing as a method for practising epistemic interrogation.
First, I outline the purpose of using multi-register writing in this example by drawing on theory about writing as epistemic-practice and fictioning (Bayley, 2026). This illustrates how writing in different registers generates distinct worlds through different modes of sense-making, highlighting the necessary ethico-onto-epistemological assumptions and exclusions embedded in each that create the worlds differently.
Next, I explore the site of interplay between these two modes to present the possibilities of constructing these worlding-practices in relation with each other as a method for epistemic interrogation. I consider not the differences of the worlds they make, but the ways they make those worlds differently. These registers in relation enable more than simply pluralised viewpoints (e.g. perspectives of an academic debate or different characters from the same fiction), they provide opportunities to trace the differing processes of world-making across registers, exposing the epistemic constructions through which worlds are created.
Consequently, multi-register writing holds potential as a research method for ESE in offering ways to interrogate epistemic constructions, which necessarily includes enclosure, and provides the possibility for generating expanded epistemologies within research writing practices. Given the international nature of poly-crises, scholars in the field call for research that engages with pluriversal knowledges to resist epistemic erasure or universalism on the global stage of ESE research, notably those found in decolonial, posthuman, feminist literature and critical theory. Thus, methods for enacting epistemic interrogation within our European context can provide possibilities for approaching epistemic expansion in research practices to help us navigate times of poly-crises.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper draws on histories of multi-register writing to conduct a close analysis of a section from an ESE doctoral thesis to present multi-register writing as a method for epistemic interrogation. The analysis is presented through a combined framework of ‘fictioning’ and ‘diffractive reading’. My use of ‘fictioning’ is influenced by the work of David Burrows and Simon O’Sullivan (2019) who use the verb to articulate the material practice of open-ended world-making beyond those made possible by dominant ways of organising life in order to imagine “different realities or relations to come” (p.5). I incorporate the work of feminist writer and philosopher Ursula Le Guin (1989) who outlines fiction writing as “posing options and alternatives and an enlargement of present reality by connecting it to the unverifiable past and the unpredictable future” (pp.44-45). In this paper, therefore, fictioning is presented as an embodied experience of encounters across temporal scales by creating imaginings of (un)memorable pasts and (im)possible futures. It folds possibilities for alternative worlds into the present by collapsing together sensory information from our physical world with imagined ones. Fictioning, therefore, is the affective material practice of world-making through art, philosophy, and performance. ‘Diffractive reading’ offers a methodological logic for bringing multiple registers into relation. Fictioning creates possibilities for world-making practices that are different to those that emerge through academic writing. Diffraction offers a mode to trace the process of differencing when these registers operate together. Feminist and posthuman scholarship (e.g. Barad, 2014; Van der Tuin, 2016) outline the diffractive process as distinct from a comparative one which responds to the different writings as static and analyses the product of difference between them. Diffraction allows for a reading that positions the registers as “material-semiotic generative nodes” (Bellingham 2022 p.376), tracing the process of difference as emergent and contingent on the relational process of reading. It is not the different worlds that the registers create that is the focus of this paper's analysis, but the way that the interplay of different registers engages the reader in the processes of their different constructions. It reveals the epistemic assumptions and exclusions embedded in the world-making of writing from within each register by situating the different registers in relation. This allows multi-registered writing to operate as a method for interrogating the ontological and ethical conditions under which epistemic world-making practices emerge. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings To conclude, I return to Jeff VanderMeer’s Annihilation, which highlights how unfamiliar ecological realities demand new questions, methods, and modes of inquiry. This paper responds to recognition in ESE research that contemporary global poly-crises require more than singular epistemological or methodological frameworks and seeks approaches to research which resist reinforcing the same epistemic enclosures that have contributed to creating these poly-crises. I extend calls from the field that ESE research must expand its knowledge-making practices and critically interrogate how research methods shape what knowledges are assumed, included, or excluded in order to do so. The contribution of this paper is an analysis of multi-register writing as a method for practising epistemic interrogation. It explores examples of multi-register register writing from the field of ESE research within the frameworks of fictioning and diffractive reading to outline its purpose and possibilities as a useful method within ESE research for addressing contemporary challenges. The paper demonstrates how the interplay of different registers creates opportunities for tracing the differing processes of world-making in writing to expose the ethical, ontological, and epistemological assumptions embedded in knowledge production. The implications of doing so is important for ESE research because epistemic interrogation is a necessary step in attempts towards epistemic expansion in research. Epistemic expansion creates possibilities for engaging generatively with pluriversal knowledges to broaden the kinds of questions our research is able to ask while navigating our times of poly-crisis. Paper Engaging People in Educational Processes that Foster Environmentally Valuable Outcomes: A Synthesis of Key Findings across Eight Systematic Reviews 1: Stanford University, USA; 2: Monash University, Australia; 3: University of California Davis, USA; 4: University of Florida, USA Presenting Author:As a conjunction of environmentally and educationally informed ideas and practices, over approximately the last 50 years, the environmental education (EE) field has taken a wealth of forms worldwide, shaped by a variety of traditions, emphases, mainstays, and innovations for participants and providers. Research-based assessments of the strengths and limitations of a particular approach, correlations between objectives and outcomes, and identification of possible causal mechanisms between what is expected and experienced have generated insights about the process of designing, conducting, and evaluating both programs and instances of EE. These insights foreground the significance of, for example: learning dispositions, factors shaping educator capabilities, and a suite of teaching-and-learning strategies related to fostering environmental quality and associated matters. Making sense of the quality and dynamics of the field’s evidence base can also help confirm, extend, redirect, and shift the focus of practice, policy, professional development, research priorities, and more. Decades of research have shown that prioritizing the provision of information about environmental challenges is necessary, but not sufficient, for motivating associated behavioral changes through education (e.g., Zelezny 1999; Reid et al. 2021). Although building environmental knowledge is important, developing attitudes, awareness, values, skills, and action competence is also crucial, and this is what the field of EE is committed to doing (UNESCO 1977). At its core, EE is about cultivating meaningful relationships between people and nature—relationships that serve as the foundation for conservation and environmental action (Clark et al., 2020). For researchers, understanding the connections and disconnections between the various approaches, methods, and affordances within EE, and the reasons for these, has remained central to EE scholarship, including through regularly revisiting what works well, when, why, and for whom, within and beyond the field (e.g., Marcinkowski & Reid 2019; Świątkowski et al. 2024). Alongside the rise of the evidence-based conservation movement over the past twenty years, EE has also emerged as a worthwhile strategy to help achieve conservation goals. Engaging people at individual and collective scales is essential to develop the societal attitudes, knowledge, skills, behaviours, and norms that address conservation and environmental challenges in both the short and longer term. EE in formal, informal, and nonformal settings can be a powerful vehicle for building such capacities and competencies that build deeper connections between nature and people. To understand the ways in which EE in achieving such outcomes has been an effective strategy in a range of conditions and contexts, and what contributes to that effectiveness, we conducted a series of systematic reviews (marked * in reference list) of evidence-based scholarship over the last decade. In this presentation, we synthesise key findings into 6 recurring themes, derived from an analysis of 546 international peer-reviewed studies for distinct audiences (e.g., early childhood, K-12 provision) and contemporary priority areas in the field, namely: climate change, conservation, civic engagement, positive youth development, and community/citizen science. Our synthesis reveals six key themes that contribute to shaping debates on what constitutes ‘effective EE’: employing diverse teaching and learning approaches; fostering participatory methods; including direct action components; focusing on local community settings; connecting to personally relevant information; and collaborating with experts and stakeholders. While no universalisable model has emerged from the review, programs can help strengthen people-nature connections by integrating these educational elements into evidence-based conservation. As we show from discussing the substance and gaps in the reviews and meta-review, EE programs do well to prioritise authentic, community-grounded experiences that engage participants as active agents rather than passive recipients. To achieve desired conservation and broader environmental goals, EE initiatives also require sustained investment, cross-sector partnerships, and evaluation frameworks that capture long-term behavioural and environmental outcomes. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used eeWORKS sought to assess the empirical underpinnings to particular examples, recommendations, and broader discourse on outcomes and effects of environmental education through identifying the claims for and scope of impact of provision for a range of audiences and settings. With guidance from an international advisory board to support broader relevance, a futures orientation, and inclusivity, a series of grants enabled the nonprofit lead, the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE), to partner with researchers in identifying evidence-based impacts and outcomes of environmental education using various forms of systematic literature reviews. Framing questions for eeWORKS were: 1. What outcomes are important in the environmental education field? 2. What do EE programs strive to attain, with which audiences, and in what settings? 3. What existing evidence documents effective approaches related to the range of desired EE outcomes?, and 4. What are the documented impacts of EE in areas such as climate change, conservation, civic engagement, and positive youth development? Each review for a topic and/or setting was pursued through a three-part process, intended to document and synthesize empirical findings and then disseminate those findings to non-academic practitioner, policy, and philanthropic audiences. The scholarly teams undertook a series of eight reviews to document findings, patterns, and trends, and stimulate discussion about these among academics, professional bodies, and practitioners. Rather than follow a standardized template for each review, while connected in ethos, each of the associated subprojects and manuscripts took slightly different perspectives on the overarching questions for a particular research topic. Key considerations across reviews included use of peer-reviewed empirical studies in English and meeting criteria in quality appraisal. In total, 546 studies were analyzed, with some studies appearing in multiple searches and reviews. To identify key themes across the reviews, authors participated in collaborative, document-based discussions to synthesize commonalities and variations in findings, iteratively refining six themes discussed in the Findings. It is important to note that the eeWORKS reviews analyzed published research studies, which often focused on specific interventions or methodologies rather than providing an overview of current EE practice. Therefore, the six themes offer insights into effective evidence-based practices found in the research literature and not an exhaustive account of all effective EE approaches. Summaries of the application of the three steps, the specifics for each review (e.g., team members, datasets), findings, and communication tools are publicly available at https://naaee.org/programs/eeworks. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our presentation draws on a recently accepted publication that identifies key themes (‘meta-findings’) found to be important and effective for EE programs that aim to build knowledge, attitudes, and skills related to the environment; connect people and nature; and motivate conservation/environmental action through education. Our overarching meta-finding (Theme 1) is not surprising: that a diverse array of teaching and learning approaches in EE can bring about the desired outcomes. Equally, while the specific reviews were not designed or undertaken to reveal or suggest a universal EE template, the materialization of second-order meta-findings illustrates the ways in which particular strategies and factors may contribute to increased effectiveness whilst supporting a diversity of approaches. Those strategies (Themes 2–6) highlight the significance of: - fostering participatory approaches and methods to teaching and learning - including direct action as part of a program, where appropriate - focusing on local community settings in both issues identification and resolution - surfacing and discussing personally relevant/meaningful information, and - collaborating with experts and key stakeholders (such as scientists and resource managers) on program development and implementation. Building on the discussion of limitations with research and evaluation, a key implication is the need for incentives and support for high-quality, rigorous research and evaluation that occurs over an extended timeframe. Such efforts may help better assess the multiple factors implicated in understanding the effectiveness of EEn initiatives, the benefits of which often manifest—to individuals, communities, and ecosystems—over extended time periods. In summary, the EE field is connected with many others (Braus et al. 2022), necessitating collaborative and relational responses to changing conditions; thus, EE efforts must be marked by commitments to dynamism, evolution, and resiliency. Our meta-findings underscore the value of employing a diverse repertoire of teaching-and-learning approaches, with an emphasis on participatory methods, direct action, community focus, personal relevance, and expert collaboration.
