Paper ***WITHDRAWN*** The Impact of Active Learning Pedagogies on Neurodiverse Students in Higher Education Imperial College London, United Kingdom Presenting Author:This panel will address how active learning pedagogies impact neurodiverse students' self-efficacy in STEM higher education. As European and international universities increasingly adopt collaborative, student-centred teaching approaches, understanding their effects on students with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other cognitive differences becomes critical. Drawing on qualitative research from Imperial College London's Medical Biosciences and Genomic Medicine programmes, this panel will explore the paradoxical experiences of neurodiverse students who simultaneously value collaborative learning yet struggle with its sensory, social, and cognitive demands. Research Questions
Theoretical Framework The research integrates social cognitive theory (Bandura, 1997, 2008) with cognitive load theory (Sweller, 1988). Self-efficacy - belief in one's capacity to achieve goals - develops through mastery experiences, vicarious learning, social persuasion, and emotional states. For neurodiverse students, active learning offers opportunities for collective agency while potentially undermining individual confidence through social demands. Cognitive Load Theory (Sweller, 1988) distinguishes intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. Neurodiverse learners managing sensory sensitivities and social processing face heightened extraneous load, reducing resources available for learning. This explains why structure and predictability are crucial for these students. Additionally, increased cognitive demand can have a negative effect on self-efficacy, linking the two theories. Further, the Universal Design for Learning (Hall et al., 2012) positions neurological differences as natural variation rather than deficit, echoed in the Māori concept 'takiwatanga' (in their own time and space). This panel aims to:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed mixed methods with self-identified neurodiverse students (n=20) from BSc Medical Biosciences and MSc Genomic Medicine programmes. Anonymous 24-item survey using Likert scales across three domains assessed attitudes toward active learning, self-efficacy during teamwork, and navigating active learning with neurodivergence. Quantitative categorisation combined with thematic analysis identified patterns. Semi-structured interviews (n=8) using vignettes to explore lived experiences were carried our. Open and axial coding revealed three interconnected themes: connection (building self-efficacy through collaboration), control (structure as foundation for confidence), and balance (managing emotional regulation and cognitive overload). No formal diagnosis was required, acknowledging cultural and accessibility barriers while prioritising lived experience - an approach applicable across diverse European contexts. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Neurodiverse students valued peer collaboration and teacher connection, with stable teams fostering trust and reducing social anxiety. Self-paced e-learning and predictable structures enabled preparation that built confidence. However, self-efficacy proved fragile: disruptions to routines, sensory overload, or negative feedback quickly eroded confidence. Students described oscillating between leadership and withdrawal, with significant mental energy required to mask difficulties and manage emotional balance. This research demonstrates that environmental design, not individual limitation, determines success in active learning. By centring neurodiverse student voices and translating findings into actionable strategies, the panel provides both scholarly contribution and practical guidance for creating inclusive STEM education across diverse European contexts. Paper NeuroRealities: Lived Experiences of Neurodiverse Students in Higher Education – Insights from an International Comparative Study Ulster University, United Kingdom Presenting Author:This paper examines how neurodivergent students experience university life across diverse European and international contexts, and how these experiences should reshape teaching, assessment and student support. Drawing on two foundational studies conducted at Ulster University (United Kingdom) and Maynooth University (Ireland), and situating these within a wider international programme involving Ireland, the United Kingdom, Sweden, Germany, the United States, Canada and Australia, the paper offers a comparative perspective on shared challenges and emerging inclusive practices. Together, the studies contribute to European debates on inclusion, equity and quality enhancement in HE. Foundational Project 1: Ulster University (United Kingdom) This project investigates the lived experiences of neurodivergent learners and examines how systemic, curricular and cultural factors shape student engagement, belonging and academic success. Findings are positioned alongside international studies across multiple participating countries to illuminate convergences and divergences in neurodivergent students’ experiences globally. The guiding research question asks: What are the lived experiences of neurodiverse learners in higher education, and where do gaps in support and inclusion remain? Theoretical Framework The project draws on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as a system‑level approach to proactive inclusion, enabling educators to anticipate variability rather than respond reactively to individual needs. Andragogical and heutagogical perspectives (Friedman et. al. 2024) on adult learning further inform the study, emphasising autonomy, self‑direction and flexible pathways while recognising that appropriate structure remains essential for many learners (Clouder, et. al, 2020). A strengths‑based lens guides interpretation of student narratives and challenges deficit‑based constructions of neurodiversity, foregrounding capability, agency and self‑advocacy. Methodological Approach Semi‑structured interviews were used to gather rich accounts of coping strategies, academic engagement, sensory and cognitive barriers, disclosure decisions and interactions with support ecosystems. Descriptive analysis identified cohort-level patterns, while reflexive thematic analysis generated cross‑cutting themes and captured cultural and contextual nuances. Triangulation strengthened analytical robustness, and rigorous GDPR‑compliant data governance ensured ethical integrity. Replication of the study across multiple countries provided a comparative lens, facilitating examination of how policy regimes, language and institutional culture influence neurodivergent students’ experiences. Foundational Project 2: Maynooth University (Ireland) The Maynooth University project, Building a Neurodiverse Community in Higher Education, examined neurodiversity through a whole‑institution lens. Rather than focusing solely on individual student accounts, the project investigated how organisational culture, staff development and institutional norms shape experiences of inclusion or exclusion for neurodivergent learners. The guiding research question asks: How can higher education institutions develop neuroaffirmative cultures that move beyond deficit‑oriented and accommodation‑driven responses to support belonging, participation and success? Theoretical Framework The study adopts a neurodiversity‑affirming, strengths‑based perspective that challenges deficit framings of disability (Evans, et.al 2023). Universal Design for Learning again provides a system‑level blueprint for designing curricula, assessment and learning environments that reduce reliance on disclosure and anticipate learner variability from the outset. Methodological Approach A mixed‑methods design incorporated staff and student engagement activities, evaluation of professional learning initiatives and analysis of community‑building interventions. This approach enabled examination of how institutional practices and cultural norms influence neurodivergent students’ experiences at a systemic level. The findings align with contemporary calls for responsibility for inclusion to be situated at the institutional rather than individual level, reinforcing the need for sustainable, organisation‑wide approaches to neuroaffirmative practice. European and International Dimension By placing the two foundational projects in dialogue and situating them within a broader multinational research programme, the paper analyses how higher education systems across Europe, North America and Australia conceptualise and operationalise neurodiversity inclusion. Comparative analysis of policy architectures, support systems and pedagogical approaches identifies transferable models and context‑specific adaptations. This international perspective strengthens the paper’s contribution to ongoing European efforts to enhance equity, quality and inclusion in higher education.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a mixed-methods design to capture the complexity of neurodiverse students’ experiences in higher education. The approach integrates quantitative and qualitative strands to ensure both breadth and depth of understanding, aligning with methodological pluralism advocated by Cohen, Manion, and Morrison (2018). Quantitative Phase - Biographical Study The first phase involves a short demographic and biographical survey administered via Jisc Online Surveys. This instrument collects contextual data such as age, course of study, neurodivergent identity, and prior educational experiences. The survey also records co-occurrence rates of neurodiverse conditions, providing a foundational dataset for descriptive analysis and triangulation with qualitative findings. Qualitative Phase – Semi-Structured Interviews The second phase consists of semi-structured interviews with a subset of participants (approximately 12 from the survey cohort of 100). Interviews, lasting 30–45 minutes, are conducted either in person or via Microsoft Teams, depending on participant preference. The interview schedule uses open-ended questions to elicit rich narratives about academic engagement, coping strategies, disclosure practices, and institutional support. Sampling and Inclusion Criteria Participants are self-selected neurodivergent students. Inclusion criteria include self-identification or formal diagnosis of neurodivergence and active enrolment in undergraduate or postgraduate study. Recruitment occurs through student support networks and neurodiversity advocacy groups. Data Analysis Quantitative data will be analyzed descriptively to identify patterns and trends across the cohort. Qualitative data will undergo thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke’s (2006) framework, supported by NVivo software for coding and theme development. Integration of both data types enables triangulation, enhancing validity and generating nuanced insights into lived experiences. International Dimension This study forms part of a global comparative research initiative replicated in 11 countries, enabling cross-national analysis of systemic barriers and inclusive practices. Findings will contribute to international discourse on Universal Design for Learning and neurodiversity inclusion in higher education. Ethical Considerations The methodology incorporates robust ethical safeguards: informed consent, voluntary participation, the right to withdraw, and GDPR-compliant data storage. Anonymity is maintained by separating biographical and interview data. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Across both institutional contexts, the research highlights persistent systemic barriers for neurodivergent students, alongside evidence of the enabling potential of proactive, institution-wide neuroaffirmative practice. By synthesising insights from two completed foundational projects and extending these through international comparison, the paper advances an ecological understanding of neurodiversity in higher education and supports a shift from reactive accommodation toward inclusive, strengths-based and systemically embedded approaches. Findings will focus on the emotional and cognitive impact of these barriers, alongside the resilience and adaptive strategies students employ, such as metacognitive planning, assistive technology use, and strengths-based approaches rooted in special interests. A key conclusion will be that current institutional models remain reactive, privileging accommodations over proactive inclusion. Comparative analysis across both countries will identify both common challenges and culturally specific practices, offering a nuanced understanding of inclusion in global higher education contexts. The impact of this study extends beyond academic discourse. The institutional level, findings will inform policy reform. For educators, the research will provide actionable strategies to foster neuroinclusive classrooms, while student services can use insights to enhance advisory models and wellbeing support. Internationally, the project will contribute to European and global conversations on equity and diversity, shaping collaborative frameworks for inclusive education. Ultimately, the study aims to shift the narrative from deficit-based models to strengths-based paradigms, positioning neurodiversity as an asset rather than a challenge. By amplifying student voice and grounding recommendations in lived experience, the research will drive systemic change, ensuring that neurodivergent learners can thrive academically and socially in higher education. Paper Neurodiversity and Coloniality as Entangled Epistemic Orders: Rethinking Knowing and Acting in European Education Research 1: Leibniz Universität, Hannover, Germany; 2: Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany Presenting Author:This paper takes the entanglement of coloniality and neurodiversity as a conceptual starting point for rethinking the changing conditions of knowing and acting in education research. Rather than treating neurodiversity as a contemporary conceptual innovation detached from historical genealogies of power, the paper argues that the term as an epistemic concept carries a history that mirrors broader transformations within post/colonial knowledge and classification regimes. The central guiding question is: Neurodiversity as epistemic shift or colonial continuity? Rethinking disability and difference through post/colonial critique. The term neurodiversity already implies plurality. Its very lexical structure presupposes that cognitive, sensory, and behavioral differences are heterogeneous and non-hierarchical. Historically, however, this pluralistic orientation emerged only gradually. Earlier terminology, such as ‘disorder’ reflected medicalized and deficit-oriented knowledge regimes rooted in colonial notions of rationality and developmental normality (Afeworki Abay & Soldatic, 2024; Quijano, 2007). Over time, neurodiversity evolved into an explicitly pluralizing and resource-oriented concept, while keeping its original structure as an everchanging epistemic concept (Singer 1999, 2022). This conceptual transformation parallels the broader shifts described in post/colonial theory: from classificatory systems that stabilized colonial hierarchies of mind and body towards approaches that foreground plurality, contextuality, and epistemic justice (Escobar & Frye, 2020; Mignolo, 2009; Santos et al., 2007). When placed within post/colonial frameworks, neurodiversity reveals its entanglement. While it signals a shift towards pluralistic and inclusive epistemologies that are aligned with cognitive justice, its uptake in academia, clinical practice and education remains embedded in colonial epistemic infrastructures. These infrastructures include diagnostic norms, behavioral expectations and Eurocentric ideals of rationality and the 'ideal' learner (Mignolo, 2023; Mottron & Gagnon, 2023). Understanding neurodiversity in coloniality as an interconnected formation offers a valuable analytical perspective. It reveals how neurodivergent modes of knowledge have been deemed illegitimate or inadequate through classification systems originating from colonial projects that sought to categorize populations. At the same time, it emphasizes the potential of neurodiversity to challenge these epistemic structures by reframing difference as an expression of epistemic plurality rather than a deficit. Especially since the Neurodiversity-Movement sees itself in the tradition of other civil-rights movements (Grummt, 2023), and claims social justice among other dimensions of human heterogeneity, such as Race, Class or Gender (Singer, 2022). At the same time, the concept of neurodiversity itself is not epistemically neutral. Its emergence, circulation and global uptake are largely rooted in the knowledge contexts of Global North countries. Implicit understandings of cognition, difference and the self, risk to reproduce epistemic hierarchies between a knowing center and a marginalized periphery (Nair et al, 2024). Here, the concept of epistemic positionality serves as a key analytical lens (Rose, 1997). It highlights how researchers, institutions and educational systems jointly create the conditions that make neurodiversity meaningful. This is particularly pertinent in European contexts, where education systems (still) rely heavily on diagnostic regimes and comparative frameworks that universalize epistemic assumptions with colonial genealogies (Knobloch & Drerup, 2022). Recognizing these entanglements requires a re-evaluation of how educational research understands, categorizes and acts upon cognitive differences. The paper aims to: - Conceptualize the entanglement of coloniality and neurodiversity as foundational to understanding contemporary educational knowledge production. - Examine whether the pluralizing trajectory of the neurodiversity concept can be seen as a progressive shift towards post/colonial epistemologies. - Explore methodological openings for educational research seeking to 'know and act otherwise', through plural, relational and critically reflexive epistemic practices. By placing the historical and conceptual evolution of neurodiversity in direct dialogue with post/colonial analyses of knowledge and power, the paper will contribute to a rethink of the epistemic conditions and potential of education research in the context of global and European inequalities. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The contribution's methodological orientation is explicitly theoretical-conceptual and epistemological. Rather than approaching neurodiversity as an empirical category, it considers it to be a historical, political and epistemological formation whose development is inextricably linked to colonial knowledge regimes. The analysis is framed by three methodological commitments: 1. Genealogical and historical-epistemic analysis This approach traces the conceptual evolution from deficit-based, medicalized labels (e.g. 'disorder' or 'impairment') to the more plural, resource-oriented understanding implied by the concept of 'neurodiversity'. Building on the work of postcolonial thinkers, this genealogy is not merely viewed as a semantic shift, but as a transformation within broader epistemic orders characterized by coloniality. The analysis reveals how colonial knowledge formations and classification projects shaped todays taxonomies of ability and normality. 2. Post/colonial critique of classificatory infrastructures The concept of neurodiversity is examined within the context of global systems of knowledge production, including diagnostic regimes (e.g. DSM, ICD), international policy frameworks (e.g. UN, WHO, OECD) and educational assessment cultures. These infrastructures are considered sites where colonial rationalities persist, reinforcing normative beliefs about cognition, behavior, and 'the typical learner'. Methodologically, this involves analyzing how such infrastructures render some neurodivergent modes of knowing legible while marginalizing others. 3. Epistemic positionality and reflexive methodology Building on reflexive methodologies developed in decolonial and feminist epistemologies (Haraway, 1988; Spivak, 1988), the analysis foregrounds the epistemic positionality of European researchers and institutions. This includes examining how European research traditions universalize particular epistemic standards and how such univerzalisations shape the uptake of neurodiversity within educational discourse. The method treats research itself as a site of knowledge production implicated in colonial entanglements. 4. Relational and non-hegemonic comparison In this study, comparison is a central methodological operation, as the meaning of neurodiversity is produced through implicit and explicit acts of comparison across contexts, norms and knowledge formations. Rather than juxtaposing cases or contexts in a linear or evaluative manner, comparison is conceptualized as an interactive process (Ascroft, 2025) that considers how epistemic assumptions about cognition, normality and difference emerge in relation to one another. Treating comparison as an object of analysis foregrounds how comparative operations contribute to the stabilization or disruption of epistemic hierarchies. This aligns the methodological approach with the post/colonial critique central to the study. Together, these methodological orientations provide a coherent approach to analyzing the coloniality–neurodiversity entanglement as a dynamic epistemic formation shaping contemporary educational research. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Three main insights are expected from the contribution: 1. Neurodiversity as a historically and colonially entangled epistemic concept The analysis reveals that, despite being presented as a pluralizing concept, neurodiversity is rooted in epistemic orders with colonial genealogies that persist in shaping our understanding of cognition and difference within European education systems. In Europe, neurodiversity is increasingly informing diagnostic categories, assessment practices and inclusion policies. These forms of knowledge influence pedagogical and institutional action by determining who is recognized as a learner, what support is considered appropriate, and how difference is managed. Consequently, neurodiversity functions as a contested epistemic site where pluralizing aspirations intersect with historically entrenched norms of normality and development. 2. Limits of European educational research: inherited epistemic conditions of knowing and acting By examining the colonial assumptions underlying the prevailing understanding of cognition and behavior, this study shows that European educational research frequently relies on epistemic repertoires that remain unmarked by history. These repertoires influence how data is interpreted, comparisons are drawn and educational interventions are justified. Consequently, research-based knowledge informs educational practice in teacher education, policy and other areas, potentially reproducing epistemic hierarchies unintentionally. Therefore, making these conditions of knowing explicit is crucial for responsible educational action in Europe. 3. Toward epistemically reflexive ways of knowing and acting in European contexts Recognizing the interconnection between coloniality and neurodiversity requires a methodological shift in European educational research: • Towards plural and relational forms of cognition and difference. • Towards reflexive engagement with epistemic positionality in research and practice; • and towards educational practices that irritate hierarchical classification and universalization. These approaches allow European educational research to reconsider how knowledge informs action, facilitating more context-sensitive and non-hegemonic interactions with diversity in a changing social and epistemic landscape. Paper Schooling for Neurodiversity - Exploring One Alternative Education Setting Through an Ecological Lens Adelaide University, Australia Presenting Author:The educational gap between those who experience success at school and those who do not is growing. This is reflected in the current context of schooling in Australia. Australia is experiencing a decline in school attendance, a drop in the number of students completing school (Productivity Commission, 2025), and an increase in disciplinary absences (Down et al., 2024). Unsurprisingly, students from diverse backgrounds, such as First Nation’s students, students with a disability and students living in poverty, are overrepresented in these numbers (Savage, 2023). Alongside this, teachers and school leaders are reporting increased levels of work-related health issues and are leaving the profession in droves (Kidson et al., 2024). Research has identified increased student diversity as one of the factors leading to these concerning trends (Windle et al.,2022). Decades of rhetoric, policy and reform have failed to deliver an inclusive and sustainable form of schooling that meets the learning needs of all students. In recent years, education systems globally have stagnated in their journeys to become more inclusive, and much of the blame for this is placed at the feet of schools (Boyle et al., 2024). This has led to many families seeking alternatives to regular forms of schooling. In the past decade Australia has seen a significant rise in the number of alternative education settings with an estimated 70,000 plus children and young people now attending these schools. Given the recentness of the phenomenon, there is a dearth of research that has interrogated the impact of this on the educational and post school outcomes of young people. In addition, much of the research globally that has been conducted into alternative education settings has been limited in scope, both in terms of the focus of the studies and the participants involved (for example see Kennedy et al., 2019; Mills et al., 2019). An opportunity arose to undertake an in-depth study into one alternative educational setting, established to cater for neurodivergent students in one educational jurisdiction, from its inception. The study adopted a qualitative longitudinal case-study design to answer three research questions:
The study is framed within an ecological paradigm. To improve practice in education, the contexts in which it occurs must be recognised and appreciated (Muller, 2015). The different systems, individual factors, and their relationships of influence with each other, need to be understood and the study is framed within an ecological paradigm. It is within this paradigm that the process of ‘constructing and strengthening interconnections between ecological systems’ can begin, one which Bronfenbrenner (1976) argues ‘offer[s] promise’ for policy makers; something that is desperately needed. The Ecology of inclusive education reimagined (Anderson, under review) acknowledges that schools ‘embody a complex array of understandings, beliefs, and values encoded in structures, cultures and everyday routines, all of which are usually legitimated and sanctioned by the surrounding social environment’ (Portela, 2013, p. 37). The framework offers a structure for research that eliminates the need to simplify or tidy things up, enabling complex phenomena to be understood in confluence, within the messiness that is the ‘school’, a necessary condition to answer the study’s research questions. Deep understanding supports meaningful change. This study seeks to interrogate one alternative education settings over a period of four years, to better understand how schools can support the educational, social and health outcomes of students for whom current approaches to schooling are not working. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopted a qualitative longitudinal case-study design on a single school site in one educational jurisdiction in Australia. A longitudinal study allows the researcher to establish “an ongoing relationship with participants, resulting in insightful conclusions” (Derrington, 2019, p. 3), and to conduct research in a way that is done with rather than to the school community; an important facet of researching diverse participant cohorts (Fletcher-Watson et al., 2021). The school is a secondary school that caters for students from years 7 to 10. It has been purposefully designed as a small school, with 16 students admitted into each of the year levels for the start of the 2026 school year. The site was purposefully selected as the researcher was able to engage with the school founders before it opened in 2026, with the aim of following the school through its first four years. This provides the researcher an opportunity to document the experiences of each of the inaugural cohorts across Years 7 to 10, along with the staff and families. The study incorporates the qualitative data collection methods of semi-structured interviews, participant observations, artefacts, documents and descriptive statistics. Participants come from each of the key stakeholder groups – students across all year levels, school staff, and families. All students, staff and families have been invited to participate in the study. Students and their families in each year level will be invited to participate for the entirety of the study, meaning these participants will be followed beyond their involvement with the school. All data will be analysed inductively using thematic analysis. Thematic analysis is ‘a form of pattern recognition’ where assigned codes merge to form themes that ‘become the categories for analysis’ (Fereday & Muir-Cochrane, 2006, p. 82). More comprehensively, texts are read and re-read, and meaning is attributed to segments of text. These segments of text, described by Guest et al. (2012), form ‘semantic boundaries’ that are named, described, and examined in terms of their connectedness to other data. Thematic analysis affords the researcher the ability to analysis different data sets across the above-mentioned data types, make connections between them. The focus of this presentation will be on the adoption of this method to better understand the phenomenon under investigation, and present preliminary findings about the inception of the school and the initial experiences of students, staff and families as the school opens in January 2026. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Expected outcomes of this study include: • A detailed, chronological account of how the alternative educational setting was conceptualised, established, and refined over time. • Amplification of student and family voice in discussions of alternative education and neurodiversity-affirming practice. • Identification of key drivers shaping development (e.g. leadership vision, policy constraints, student needs, funding, staffing). • Insight into tensions and adaptations encountered during establishment (e.g. balancing flexibility with system accountability). • An articulated model of practice showing how initial intentions evolved in response to students, families and the constraints of the system. • Rich descriptions of how students, staff, and families conceptualise the purpose of the school and education more broadly. • Evidence of convergences and divergences in stakeholder perspectives (e.g. differing priorities between system-level expectations and family hopes). • Insight into how neurodiversity is understood, affirmed, or contested in everyday educational practice. • Identification of relational and environmental factors that contribute to students’ success (or not) at school. • Descriptions of student and family outcomes beyond schooling. Beyond the individual research questions, the study may provide: • A refined description of the key features underpinning approaches that can support the educational experiences of nuero0divergent students (e.g. pedagogy, relationships, environment, collaboration). • Factors that support successful implementation (e.g. leadership, staff expertise, flexibility). • Systemic, structural, or resource-based barriers limiting scalability or sustainability. • Further evaluation of the usefulness of an ecological framework to deepen our understanding of how systems of schooling can better support the diverse educational, social and health needs of all students.
