Paper Bridging Policy and Practice Through Arts Integration in Social and Environmental Education Dublin City University, Ireland Presenting Author:The recent adoption and phased implementation of the Primary Curriculum Framework (2025) and its associated subject specifications represent a key stage in the ongoing development of primary education in Ireland. This study explores the implementation of the reform in practice, examining the integration of Arts Education (Drama, Music and Art) within Social and Environmental Education (SEE), which comprises the subjects of History and Geography. The study is positioned at a critical juncture where the “Knowing and Acting” of educational reform meets the pragmatic realities of the classroom. The Primary Curriculum Framework (2025) emphasises holistic development and creative agency, while also reducing the mandated minimum time allocation for dedicated Arts Education in Stages 3 and 4 (3rd to 6th Class) in order to accommodate an expanded curriculum. This research explores how arts integration, through the use of creative pedagogies, offers a robust solution to this temporal constraint. By repositioning the arts as the primary vehicle for understanding SEE, rather than as isolated subjects, the research tests a model in which teacher–student collaboration and innovation blur traditional subject boundaries. Drawing on Irish and international literature, the study responds to a recognised policy–practice gap in arts integration, where curriculum intentions are frequently challenged by limited time, variable teacher expertise and the absence of shared integration frameworks. Pending ethical approval, the study will involve an 8-week pedagogical design cycle across all four curriculum stages (Junior Infants to 6th Class), commencing in Autumn 2026, and will focus on teachers’ professional judgement and experiences of arts integration. Central to this cycle is the utilisation of the arts to facilitate learning in a playful and exploratory manner. This playfulness is theorised not as a lack of rigour, but as a pedagogical stance characterised by “possibility thinking” (Craft, 2005), metaphor and embodied exploration. Such an approach aligns directly with the aims of the Primary Curriculum Framework (2025), which envisions a curriculum where agency is nurtured through engaging and imaginative experiences. Through a pragmatist lens, the research focuses on teachers’ perceptions of effective practice during the initial term of the new Arts Education and SEE Specifications rollout. The pedagogical cycle utilises Drama for perspective taking, Music to evoke a sense of place and Art to represent social and environmental change. Data will be collected through surveys, structured reflection, classroom observation and teacher interviews, providing insight into how creative pedagogies are enacted in classrooms. The research evaluates how these multi-modal approaches allow for the grasp of complex social and environmental systems, by centring the creative pedagogies employed by teachers at the centre of teaching and learning. Drawing on findings emerging from the literature review, early analysis highlights that while arts integration supports conceptual connection and engagement, implementation can become tokenistic without teacher agency, planning time and shared pedagogical models. Anticipated outcomes suggest that this integrated model can help bridge the implementation gap between policy documentation and classroom practice by enhancing teacher confidence and professional agency. Following a detailed literature review, preliminary indications suggest that the playful and aesthetic qualities of the arts support classroom practices that help students connect ideas across disciplines. Furthermore, the study expects to demonstrate that arts integration optimises the limited time available in Stages 3 and 4 of the Primary Curriculum Framework (2025), effectively restoring creative space through pedagogical efficiency. As an emerging researcher, the author seeks to contribute evidence on how creative arts practices can translate policy into classroom action, providing timely insights for teachers, school leaders and curriculum designers, contributing to the successful realisation of Ireland’s new educational vision for primary education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This research employs a multiphase mixed methods sequential design grounded in a pragmatist worldview. This design prioritises the practical effects of pedagogical actions and evaluates the use of an 8-week pedagogical design cycle through the lens of teachers’ professional experiences of integrating the arts into SEE. Research Phases and Data Collection Pending ethical approval, the study will comprise four chronological phases designed to capture teacher perceptions across all four curriculum stages: Phase 1: Pre-Cycle (Quantitative) Baseline data will be gathered using a Teacher Pedagogical Self-Efficacy Scale (TPSES). This survey will assess teachers’ confidence, perceived competence and attitudes towards integrating Drama, Music and Art into History and Geography prior to the 2026 adoption of the specifications. Phase 2: 8-week Pedagogical Design Cycle (Qualitative) During the cycle, qualitative data will be generated through researcher observation of classroom practice, teacher focus groups and semi-structured interviews. This phase will document teachers’ experiences of employing creative pedagogies and their reflections on the feasibility of arts integration within the SEE curriculum. Phase 3: Post-Cycle (Quantitative) Following the cycle, the TPSES survey will be re-administered to the same cohort, allowing for statistical comparison of changes in teacher confidence and their professional evaluation of arts integration within SEE as a viable instructional model. Phase 4: Synthesis and Reflection (Qualitative) The final phase will involve follow up semi-structured interviews with teachers. These interviews will serve to explain the quantitative results and provide nuanced professional reflections on the impact of reduced Arts time in Stages 3 and 4, and whether arts integration and creative pedagogies successfully mitigated these constraints. Analysis The analysis will utilise convergent synthesis, where qualitative themes regarding teacher agency and the playful manner of instruction are integrated with quantitative changes in teachers’ confidence in their professional practice. The pragmatist evaluation focuses on practical applicability, identifying which arts integrated strategies teachers found most effective in translating the 2025 specifications into meaningful classroom experiences during the initial 2026 adoption period. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The recent implementation of the new Irish Primary Curriculum specifications prompts a re-evaluation of how educators adopt a more flexible approach to subject boundaries. This research demonstrates that the successful implementation of the Primary Curriculum Framework, particularly its emphasis on creativity and agency, is contingent upon supporting teachers in the implementation of creative pedagogies through arts integration with SEE. While the reduction of dedicated time for the arts in Stages 3 and 4 poses a systemic challenge, this study illustrates that teachers can effectively use the arts as fundamental tools for understanding the social and environmental world. Focusing on teacher opinions and professional judgment, it is envisaged that this 8-week pedagogical design cycle will show that a playful manner of learning is viewed by educators as an efficient and meaningful way to meet the requirements of the new specifications. The anticipated results suggest that when teachers are empowered to integrate Art, Music and Drama into History and Geography, their instructional methods become more inclusive and sustainable. This directly supports the Primary Curriculum Framework's (2025) aim of fostering "active citizenship" and "agency" through practitioner expertise. Ultimately, this research project suggests that the success of the initial adoption of the specifications depends on moving beyond rigid administrative routines toward classroom practices shaped by teachers’ expertise and initiative. Through documenting the effectiveness of this multiphase mixed-methods 8-week pedagogical design cycle, the study aims to provide a vital, evidence based roadmap for school leaders and policy makers. It suggests the playful agency afforded by arts integration is what allows the curriculum to become a lived experience. Paper ***WITHDRAWN*** Teachers’ Evolving and Multifaceted Roles in Creative and Design-Oriented School Contexts University of Helsinki, Finland Presenting Author:Design is deeply embedded in contemporary life as a practical, social, and cultural activity that shapes how people interact with artifacts, services, systems, and media. Consequently, education must support students in developing design-related competencies such as creativity, empathy, collaboration, and the ability to work productively with uncertainty (Iversen et al., 2018). International frameworks, including the OECD Learning Compass 2030, position these competencies within broader future-oriented learning goals, emphasizing cognitive, social–emotional, and practical capacities such as empathy, agency, and responsibility (OECD, 2019). Collectively, these perspectives recognize design-related competencies as essential for navigating complexity and contributing to sustainable futures. In the 21st century, design thinking (DT) has increasingly been adopted across educational levels, from higher education in design, engineering, and business to school-based, often STE(A)M-oriented, classrooms (Calavia et al., 2023; Smith et al., 2015). Research in higher education demonstrates positive effects of DT interventions on creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and other twenty-first-century skills (Yu et al., 2024). In school contexts, DT is frequently integrated through design, engineering, and making, where the combination of digital innovation and craft traditions strengthens students’ design competencies and supports meaningful STEM learning, agency, and equity when community, culture, and identity are intentionally valued. Despite growing interest, research on DT in primary and secondary education remains emergent (Lin et al., 2025), and guidance for classroom implementation—particularly regarding teachers’ roles—remains limited (Henriksen et al., 2020). DT offers a structured and teachable approach for engaging learners and end users in open-ended, human-centered problems while supporting productive engagement with uncertainty (Carroll, 2014). As a framework for creative and collaborative problem-solving, DT integrates empathy, curiosity, and resilience with systematic processes for ideation, prototyping, and material exploration (Goldman & Kabayadondo, 2016). However, empirical studies in school contexts often lack detailed accounts of pedagogical implementation, particularly regarding teachers’ facilitation and design work (Panke, 2019). This gap is notable given evidence that teachers’ pedagogical decisions fundamentally shape students’ design learning experiences (Retna, 2016). Addressing this gap, this paper draws on an article-based doctoral dissertation examining how DT can be integrated into K–9 education, with a particular focus on teachers’ roles in creative, design-oriented learning environments. The research is grounded in an in-depth qualitative case study conducted in an eighth-grade (14–15 years) craft classroom in Finland, where students participated in a 12-session design and maker education project co-designing e-textile products for preschool children as authentic end users. This paper foregrounds one central analytical perspective emerging from my dissertation: teachers’ evolving and multifaceted roles in creative, design-oriented learning environments. Teaching design through DT required teachers to go beyond instruction and facilitation to engage in continuous learning experience design, design leadership, and reflective practice. By making teachers’ often-invisible design and reflective work visible, the paper contributes to research on design education and creative pedagogies and discusses implications for teacher education and professional development. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopted a qualitative research approach situated within design-based research (DBR) and case study traditions (McKenney & Reeves, 2019; Stake, 2006). The empirical work formed part of an article-based doctoral dissertation and focused on a single in-depth case of design thinking implementation in Finnish lower secondary education. The research context was an eighth-grade craft classroom (students aged 14–15), where a three-month design and maker education project was implemented over twelve weekly sessions. The project followed a human-centered design thinking approach and engaged students in participatory design and making. Students co-designed and produced e-textile artifacts for local preschool children, who acted as authentic end users throughout the process. The project was co-facilitated by a craft teacher and a researcher–teacher, enabling close examination of teachers’ pedagogical roles, collaboration, and reflective practices in situ. Multiple qualitative data sources were collected to capture the complexity of teaching and learning within the DT process. These included classroom video recordings, pedagogical materials and student design artifacts, field notes, teachers’ reflective diaries, audio reflections, and semi-structured interviews. Together, these data provided insight into teachers’ pedagogical decision-making, facilitation strategies, socio-emotional support practices, and reflective engagement across the project. Thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) supported the identification of recurring patterns related to facilitation, reflection, design leadership, and collaboration. The analysis was iterative and reflexive, moving between empirical data and relevant theoretical perspectives on design thinking, creative pedagogies, and teacher professional learning. Throughout the research process, reflexivity was emphasized due to the dual role of the researcher as both participant and analyst (Schön, 1987). Ethical considerations were addressed in accordance with national research ethics guidelines, and informed consent was obtained from all participants and guardians. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper contributes to research on creative and design-oriented learning by offering an empirically grounded account of teachers’ evolving and multifaceted roles in school-based DT project. Rather than positioning teachers solely as facilitators, the findings conceptualize teachers as reflective learning experience designers who simultaneously enact roles as facilitators, co-designers, co-learners, and design leaders within non-linear and uncertain design processes (Sawyer, 2017). Teachers’ pedagogical design decisions, emotional and socio-material work, and reflective practices were deeply intertwined with students’ open-ended design and making activities. The findings show that teaching design through DT requires teachers to continuously balance openness and structure while retaining responsibility for curriculum goals, assessment, safety, and progression. Design leadership emerged as a critical dimension of teachers’ work, involving the orchestration of time, resources, materials, and emotional support in ways that enabled student ownership without relinquishing pedagogical direction (Kolko, 2024). Reflection before, during, and after teaching functioned as an integral component of pedagogical design rather than retrospective evaluation alone, supporting adaptive decision-making and responsiveness to uncertainty (Schön, 1987). Empathy and psychological safety further shaped teachers’ facilitation practices by supporting risk-taking, managing frustration, and normalizing uncertainty as a productive element of creative learning. These findings highlight that teachers’ design-oriented work is inherently relational and situational. By foregrounding teachers’ adaptive structuring, tolerance for uncertainty, and collaborative professional practices, the paper advances understanding of what it means to teach design in formal schooling. The study has implications for teacher education and professional development. Preparing teachers to work in creative, design-oriented learning environments requires more than introducing DT methods or technological tools. Teachers need sustained opportunities to develop design competence, reflective capacity, and confidence in working with open-ended processes. Practice-based professional development approaches—such as co-teaching and research–practice partnerships—are particularly well suited to supporting teachers’ evolving professional identities as designers of learning. Paper AI-Generated Songs as an Art-Based Pedagogical Tool in Foreign Language Education NIS (Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Taldykorgan), Kazakhstan Presenting Author:European research on art education increasingly emphasises creativity, aesthetic experience, inclusion, and digital transformation as central dimensions of higher education (Bamford, 2006; Winner, Goldstein, & Vincent-Lancrin, 2013). In parallel, artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful yet contested force in education, raising critical questions regarding creativity, authorship, and the role of technology in artistic and pedagogical practices (Holmes et al., 2019). Despite growing interest in AI in education, its potential as an arts-based pedagogical mediator remains underexplored within art education research. Music occupies a significant position within European traditions of art education due to its embodied, emotional, and multimodal nature (Bresler, 2007). In foreign language education, songs have been shown to support vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, pronunciation, and affective engagement (Ludke, Ferreira, & Overy, 2014). From a sociocultural perspective, musical activities can lower affective filters and promote meaningful participation in language learning (Krashen, 1985). However, instructors in multilingual higher education contexts frequently encounter limitations when attempting to integrate music into language curricula, as existing songs rarely align with CEFR-based learning objectives or specific linguistic content. Recent advances in generative AI offer new opportunities to address these challenges. AI tools such as ChatGPT, Suno, and Udio enable the creation of original songs tailored to pedagogical goals, learner levels, and curricular requirements. From an art education perspective, such tools invite reconsideration of creative agency and human–AI collaboration within post-digital learning environments (Knochel & Patton, 2015). Although the empirical study was conducted in Kazakhstan, it is conceptually framed within European educational and art education discourses. Kazakhstan represents a multilingual higher education context comparable to many European systems in terms of language diversity, digitalisation, and competency-based curricula. The study therefore addresses shared European challenges and contributes transferable insights to research on arts-based pedagogy in higher education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed a mixed-methods, arts-informed research design consistent with methodological traditions in European art education research (Leavy, 2015). An AI-supported curriculum integrating AI-generated songs was implemented over one academic semester in undergraduate foreign language courses. For each instructional unit, original song lyrics were generated using ChatGPT, embedding target vocabulary, grammatical structures, and discourse patterns aligned with CEFR-based learning outcomes. These lyrics were subsequently transformed into complete musical compositions using AI music-generation platforms such as Suno and Udio. The resulting songs were conceptualised as artistic artefacts rather than supplementary teaching materials. Pedagogical activities reflected arts-based education principles and included guided listening, collective singing, rhythmic and phonetic analysis, interpretive dialogue, and reflective tasks addressing emotional and aesthetic responses. Students were encouraged to engage critically with the songs as creative products, discussing their artistic qualities, linguistic form, and the role of AI in creative production. Such practices align with experiential and interpretive approaches central to art education (Eisner, 2002). The programme was implemented during the 2024/25 academic year with approximately 90 undergraduate students from diverse academic disciplines. Experimental groups engaged with AI-generated songs, while control groups followed conventional language instruction. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-tests assessing vocabulary acquisition, listening comprehension, and grammatical accuracy. Qualitative data included questionnaires, reflective journals, classroom observations, and focus group interviews. Data analysis combined statistical methods with thematic analysis, enabling triangulation of cognitive and aesthetic learning outcomes. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Quantitative findings indicate that students in the experimental groups achieved significantly higher learning gains than those in the control groups. Improvements in vocabulary acquisition and listening comprehension were substantially greater in the AI-song condition, with statistically significant differences (p < .05). These results align with previous research demonstrating the effectiveness of music-based and multimodal learning in language education (Ludke et al., 2014; Paquette & Rieg, 2008). Qualitative data further highlight the aesthetic and affective dimensions of the learning experience. Students reported increased motivation, reduced language anxiety, and greater confidence in language use. The collective musical activities fostered inclusive participation, particularly benefiting students with lower initial proficiency levels. Such findings resonate with European educational priorities related to inclusion, learner well-being, and student-centred pedagogy (European Commission, 2020). In addition, students engaged critically with issues of creativity and authorship, reflecting on AI as a collaborator rather than a replacement for human creativity. These reflections align with contemporary European debates on post-digital art education and creative technologies (Knochel & Patton, 2015). Minor linguistic inaccuracies in AI-generated lyrics were identified but were addressed pedagogically, often serving as opportunities for critical language analysis and collaborative learning. Overall, both students and instructors evaluated the approach as innovative, artistically meaningful, and pedagogically effective, supporting its relevance for arts-based learning in higher education. By subject knowledge, I refer to the knowledge, skills, and competencies that students have the opportunity to acquire based on teaching and by L1, I refer to the school subject L1, for example, English in English-speaking countries, Danish in Denmark, and so on. The project is a qualitative multiple-case study in the field of Literature Education, and it is connected to The Fairy Tales and Stories of Hans Christian Andersen – The Digital Manuscript Edition, a digitization project taking place at the University of Southern Denmark. The background of the project consists of previous Nordic, Dutch, German, British, and Australian studies in the field of Literature Education, focusing on upper secondary education. These studies have shown that teachers struggle to find engaging ways to teach classic literature that incorporate historical context, and that it can be difficult to engage students in this type of teaching (Elf, 2018; Elliott, 2025; Pieper, 2020; Van Keulen & Spotti, 2024). These issues are often linked to, and understood against the background of, what has been referred to as “a transmission pedagogy, with teachers as the (authoritative) source of (authorized) knowledge” (Green & Krogh, 2020, p. 24), thereby making student learning primarily a matter of intellectual appropriation (Pieper, 2020; Van Keulen & Spotti, 2024). Since teaching and learning with and about canonical literature plays a significant role in national curricula in the Global North - a situation that has prevailed since the beginning of the “academic paradigm” in the mid-nineteenth century ((Sawyer & Van de Ven, 2006, p. 11) - the implications of the project’s findings are relevant not only in a Nordic context but also internationally. Therefore, the main research questions at the outset of the PhD project were: To what extent can teaching based upon Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale manuscripts and inquiry-based literature teaching open new pathways in the teaching of classic literature and historical context, which are not mainly oriented towards transmission? And to what extent can the digital accessibility of the fairy tale manuscripts support inquiry-based literature teaching and thus be a collaborator in this new way of teaching classic literary texts and their contexts? To operationalize the study, the following research questions form the basis of the project’s research design: 1. Theoretically, what characterizes an inquiry-based approach to teaching of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale manuscripts, which also incorporates the digitization? 2. What happens when implementing a co-designed learning material based on the theoretical understanding of inquiry-based literature teaching in classroom practice? 3. What kind of subject knowledge does this new way of teaching bring into play compared to the subject knowledge of teaching that does not use the co-designed learning material?
The theoretical framework of the project is practice theory, specifically the theory of practice architectures (Kemmis et al., 2014). Drawing on the abovementioned empirical studies, the PhD project points out that the practice architectures of the subject are the cause of its challenges, because the arrangements that make up the practice architectures do not allow students to properly experience old literature. Hence, a thesis of the project is that by making specific changes in the arrangements of the practice architectures a new kind of subject knowledge becomes possible in the teaching of classic literary texts and their historical contexts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The project is designed as a Design-Based Research-project (McKenney & Roblin, 2018). Two teachers, each from different schools and both with prior experience in inquiry-based literature teaching, were invited to engage intensively in co-designing prototype digital and analogue learning materials based on Hans Christian Andersen’s digitized fairy tale manuscripts and inquiry-based literature teaching. The aim of the design (and re-designs) was to change the practice architectures of the teaching and learning of classic literary texts and their historical contexts to try to bring a new kind of subject knowledge into play in Danish L1 classrooms. The co-design process between the two teachers and I is itself data in the project and it is mainly comprised of five co-design meetings, approximately three hours each. Once designed, the learnings materials were tested by the teachers themselves in their classes over twelve 90-minute teaching modules within two three-week periods (cases 1 and 2), and throughout the design and testing phase feedback from the co-designing teachers were gathered and integrated into redesigns. So, data were generated from Danish L1 upper secondary classrooms at four large urban and suburban schools between 2023 and 2024 and it comprises video observation, audio recordings, field notes, interviews with students and teachers, dialogical meetings with the participating teachers, and creative student products. Data has also been collected from two other cases (cases 3 and 4) involving two other teachers, where the same Andersen works were being taught, but without the co-designed learning material. These cases will be compared to the two first ones to see if a new kind of subject knowledge actually came into play in the classrooms. All four teachers were gathered during a kick-off and a concluding dialogical meeting focusing on how they teach, talk about, and relate to literature teaching of classic literary texts and their historical contexts in combination with inquiry-based literature teaching. This meeting is also in itself data in the project. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As for L1 literature education research, the project’s findings (Alenkjær & Elf, 2026 [Forthcoming]) push the boundaries of what counts as knowledge - and more broadly, what constitutes L1 subject education - in the disciplinary understanding of L1 making the case for a stronger focus on embodied and emotional aspects of teaching and learning, which taps into broader discussions about the role of emotions, affect and relationality in literacy education (Leander & Boldt, 2013). Theoretically, data analyses have identified a connection between the theory of practice architectures and Erving Goffman’s dramaturgical analysis of social life, thus showing a genealogy of thinking from Goffman to contemporary practice theory concerning relatings, embodiment, emotional labour and affect. From a teaching perspective, findings contribute to the disciplinary understanding of L1 teaching by making the case that embodied and emotional aspects of teaching and learning literature could and should count as disciplinary learning and knowledge in the subject. During data analysis, the PhD project’s rich data set has proven particularly illuminating when focusing on the role of embodiment, emotions and affect in understanding the subject knowledge of teaching and learning of classic texts and their historical contexts. In (Alenkjær & Elf, 2026 [Forthcoming]) I studied these issues from the perspective of students’ learning practices, and in the current journal article I am working on, I study it from the perspective of the teachers’ teaching practices, focusing on embodied and affective aspects of their teacher disciplinarity. In and through my data analysis the overall research focus of the project has changed slightly, as I am now examining the data through the question: What, in fact, is subject knowledge in the teaching and learning of classic literary texts and their historical contexts within the ecologies of practices in Danish upper secondary education?
