Panel Discussion Dreaming of the Future of Sámi Education 1: University of Oulu, Finland; 2: Sámi Parliament, Finland; 3: University of Lapland, Finland; 4: Sámi Giellagáldu, Finland Presenting Author:In this session, the focus will be on dreaming and envisioning the future of Sámi education. The discussion will explore the current state of Sámi languages and the development needs related to their future, as well as good practices that support the development of future-oriented teaching and learning. The session will also invite participants to imagine and reflect on what future Sámi education could look like, considering questions of language vitality, cultural continuity, and innovative pedagogical approaches. The discussion will engage with current research on Sámi education and language revitalization, as well as practical teaching approaches developed within Sámi educational contexts. It will also consider broader societal developments, including reflections related to the work of the Sámi Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In this context, particular attention will be given to the need for decolonial approaches in education that strengthen Sámi languages, knowledge systems, and epistemologies. Furthermore, the session will address questions of sustainable futures in a rapidly changing Arctic region. The Arctic is transforming faster than many other parts of the world due to environmental, social, and cultural changes. These transformations highlight the importance of culturally grounded, resilient, and sustainable educational practices that support Sámi communities and future generations. An equitable approach will be used to engage with the speakers in preparation for the panel, and the discussion will be co-created collaboratively before the session. The aim is to create a space for shared reflection, dialogue, and collective dreaming about sustainable, decolonial, and culturally grounded futures for Sámi education. References Drugge, Anna-Lill.
