Paper Analysing Powerful Knowledge: A Curricular and Didactic Comparison Between School Biology and Geology and History in Portugal 1: Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) / FPCEUP, Portugal; 2: Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP), Portugal Presenting Author:This proposal is the result of an analysis and comparison of the types of knowledge present in the curricular programmes of two subjects from different areas of the Portuguese upper secondary education system (ranging from the 10th to the 12th grade): biology and geology (integrated subjects merged in one in the 10th and 11th grades) and history. In addition to this analysis, we sought to understand the extent to which teaching and learning practices align with curriculum guidelines and how these dynamics affect student learning and access to powerful knowledge and, inherently, powerful thinking. This study is part of a broader research project that sought to assess how certain curricular and didactic provisions and dynamics promote or condition academic success in two subjects from different areas and originating from distinct knowledge structures. This more specific study was inspired by the work of Gericke et al., who developed a framework for curricular analysis of powerful knowledge in biology by comparing the national curricula of England, Finland, and Sweden. In this context, we used the theoretical-methodological model proposed by the authors to categorize the knowledge present in the curriculum content and compare the curriculum programmes of the two subjects. The curricula for subjects in Portugal are organised into thematic blocks or domains. Within each organisational block, there is content, designated as essential learning outcomes (knowledge, skills, and attitudes) that students must acquire (the ‘what’). There is also another section containing strategic teaching actions geared towards the subject (the ‘how’). The study focused precisely on these two elements: content and teaching actions. Note that the study goes beyond the analysis of curriculum texts and complements it with an analysis of teaching practices related to one of these organisational blocks. This would make it possible to reflect on curricular guidelines and their didactic realisation from a perspective related to their potential as drivers of powerful knowledge. Reflections on how knowledge and school teaching and learning can promote (or hinder) social justice, fair equality of opportunities, social mobility, and the empowerment of young students have been widely discussed in the education field. It is within this debate that the concept of powerful knowledge emerged, widely disseminated by Young, Muller, and other social realist scholars. The social realists argue that some knowledge is better (epistemically, morally, aesthetically) and more universal than others. In this line, Young and Muller differentiate knowledge from our opinions or experience because it explicitly recognises a relationship to a reality that is independent of us, deepening, in a sense, the distinction between disciplinary knowledge and everyday knowledge. Thus, all students should have equal access to this powerful knowledge. It is powerful knowledge insofar as it provides students with intellectual powers that enable them to achieve and develop powerful thinking. So, powerful knowledge is specialised, systematised knowledge that is subject to continuous systematic review in socio-epistemic formations, such as scientific and professional communities, with review processes that are open to innovation and new perspectives and with the effective engagement of the agents involved in these formations. In other words, agency and transformative potential are inherent to the concept. In educational terms, powerful knowledge can be more effectively introduced into schools through a subject-based curriculum, whose content originates from the recontextualisation of its closest parent academic discipline. Thus, this knowledge, powerful due to its reliability, fallibility, and testability, could empower young people to better understand the world and to think beyond their everyday experiences to envisage alternatives. Based on these considerations and this theoretical and methodological background, we propose to assess the powerful potential of these two school subjects in Portugal. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This proposal arose within the scope of a broader research project that consisted of a case study, or rather, a multiple-case study, conducted in Portugal. One of its primary objectives was to assess representations of academic success among students and teachers in the contexts studied, and to discern how curricular provisions and teaching practices can influence this success. The study was conducted within different contexts: on the one hand, in three schools with different geographical locations and socio-economic/socio-cultural backgrounds; on the other hand, in two school subjects, from upper secondary education, originating from different knowledge structures - history from a horizontal knowledge structure and biology and geology from a hierarchical knowledge structure. Thus, another aim was to assess how these structural differences among subjects could influence the dynamics and processes underlying academic success. A mainly qualitative and interpretative approach was used to collect and analyse the empirical material. Within the framework of the broader project, data was collected through: focus group interviews (with teachers and with students from each school), individual interviews with teachers, collection of individual written narratives from a group of students supplemented by individual follow-up interviews, observation of lessons regarding a block of curriculum content, and collection of curricula documents and teaching and assessment materials used in classes for a period of two academic years. This specific study was primarily based on the curriculum documents for the two subjects under research. A deductive content analysis was conducted regarding the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ present in the texts. This analysis was based on the five identified knowledge and considerations of knowledge categories proposed by Gericke et al.: substantive, disciplinary, sociocultural applications, pedagogical considerations, and student-psychological considerations. These categories proved suitable for organising the data, particularly with respect to the content (which was the central part of the analysis). Then, to understand how these curricular provisions and trends are implemented in classroom environments and the impact they have on student learning, field notes from classroom observations were analysed and triangulated with data from individual interviews with students and teachers. This entire analysis was based primarily on the categories mentioned above. Although in the case of field notes, we added Bernstein's proposed categorisation of pedagogic code, specifically, for this study, regarding classification (the strength of the boundaries between categories, such as disciplines, actors, or discourses, which is strong or weak according to their degree of isolation). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Regarding curriculum texts, significant differences were observed between subjects. In biology and geology, regarding the “what” of the curriculum, there is a balanced predominance between disciplinary knowledge (46% of the descriptors) and substantive knowledge (43%), with no descriptors relating to student-psychological considerations on knowledge’ and the remaining categories being residual; with regard to the “how”, there is a predominance of pedagogical considerations on knowledge (45%) and a balance between sociocultural (17%) and student-psychological considerations (16%), and disciplinary knowledge (13%). In history, regarding the “what” of the curriculum, there is a clear predominance of substantive knowledge (90% of the descriptors), with residual occurrences related to sociocultural considerations on knowledge (5%) and disciplinary knowledge (4%), and an absence of occurrences related to pedagogical considerations on knowledge; with regard to the “how”, there is a balanced predominance between pedagogical considerations on knowledge (27%), student-psychological considerations (27%), and disciplinary knowledge (25%). These results are consistent with students' perceptions that in history they ‘have to know many details’ (predominance of substantive knowledge), and that biology ‘is especially important for those who will pursue this field’ (weight of disciplinary knowledge). In terms of teaching, it was found that in biology and geology, there is a stronger classification between substantive content and disciplinary practices, with a weekly class devoted to laboratory work. In history, however, this distinction is weak – disciplinary/scientific work is carried out as a didactic resource within the framework of learning substantive content. As a result, these disciplinary practices become invisible to students, who barely recognise the scientific work carried out in the academic discipline of history. Ultimately, we aim to discuss what these data reveal about the power of knowledge within the framework of the two subjects, and how these curricular assumptions and teaching dynamics enhance or limit the development of powerful thinking. Paper Bridging Everyday Experience and Disciplinary Knowledge toward Powerful Knowledge: An Analysis of Young People’s Knowledge of Globalisation University of Helsinki, Finland Presenting Author:Across curriculum studies and subject didactics, 'powerful knowledge' has become a widely adopted concept for arguing that schooling should provide students with access to specialised disciplinary knowledge. Developed from a sociological perspective of curriculum, 'powerful knowledge' highlights the educational value of specialised, systematic knowledge produced and validated within disciplinary communities (Young & Muller, 2013). Such knowledge is believed to help learners move beyond their everyday experience by enabling more reliable explanations and by opening up alternative ways of thinking (Muller & Young, 2019). The idea of powerful knowledge has significantly influenced the 'knowledge turn' in global educational landscapes, from policymaking to teaching practices (Béneker et al., 2024; Deng, 2025), from its main origin (England), spreading through broader Europe, and increasingly to other continents (e.g., Bertram, 2019; Hu & Wang, 2025; Maude, 2015). Despite its significance for bringing disciplinary knowledge back into school, powerful knowledge has faced persistent critiques. A long-standing concern is that it tends to undervalue everyday knowledge, related to the broader critique about separating curriculum from pedagogy (Alderson, 2020; Roberts, 2014). At the same time, the literature engaging with powerful knowledge has mainly focused on curriculum principles, policy, and teachers' practices. What remains much less visible is research on the learner's starting point — what students actually bring, and how their existing knowledge relates to the disciplinary knowledge they are expected to learn (Firth, 2018; Whittall, 2021). This study addresses the pedagogical gap of powerful knowledge. Our starting premise is that it is the bridging of everyday and disciplinary knowledge — rather than only their separation — that makes knowledge powerful in students' lives. The sociological differentiation between the two is essential, as it identifies disciplinary knowledge’s distinctive intellectual power. But moving from a sociological to an educational perspective, such as the capabilities approach to curriculum making (Lambert et al., 2015; Béneker et al., 2024), requires attending to how students encounter disciplinary knowledge and make it meaningful. A bridge requires two anchored ends: the disciplinary end is well theorised in the powerful knowledge literature; the everyday end — students' existing knowledge — requires empirical examination. Geography education offers a particularly productive case. Hammond (2022) identifies three interconnected spaces of geographical thought — academic discipline, school subject, and everyday life — and the boundaries between them are permeable rather than fixed. Among these, the sub-field of children and young people's geographies is particularly relevant: as a strand of academic geography, it takes young people's everyday spatial experiences as its scholarly object (Aitken, 2018; Biddulph, 2012; Hammond, 2022). Its insights are important for informing school geography pedagogy, yet how it relates to the idea of powerful knowledge has not been examined. This study draws on young people's geographies to take students' everyday knowledge seriously, but does not stop at understanding or celebrating it. We examine how it relates to disciplinary geographical knowledge and how a teacher works with it to move students toward more powerful understanding. Empirically, this study explores the bridge between everyday and disciplinary knowledge in a Finnish lower secondary school, with globalisation as the focal topic. Globalisation is boundary-crossing topic between academic geography, school geography, and everyday lives. This character makes it a productive case for investigating how everyday experience and disciplinary thinking connect. We ask two research questions: (1) What characterises young people's everyday knowledge of globalisation — including its themes and relationship to disciplinary geographical thinking? (2) How does the geography teacher interpret students' everyday knowledge and envision connecting it to disciplinary understanding in her teaching? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study uses a qualitative, participatory approach to research with young people (Skelton, 2008). The participants are ninth-grade students (aged 15–16) and their geography teacher in a lower secondary school in Helsinki, Finland. Prior to the research activities, the geography teacher introduced globalisation briefly in lessons, providing a shared basis for the topic. The data collection combines student-generated multimodal artefacts, focus group discussions, and a teacher interview. Students were asked to: (1) write short texts individually describing their observations and experiences of globalisation in everyday life; (2) take photographs of globalisation in their neighbourhood, accompanied by short explanatory texts; (3) draw individually how they imagine the future of globalisation — for their own lives, Finland, and the world; and (4) in small groups, create posters envisioning globalisation in the future. These multimodal artefacts were then used as prompts in focus group discussions, enabling students to explain, elaborate, and negotiate their understandings of globalisation in relation to everyday life, place, and the future. Following the student activities and discussions, we conducted an in-depth interview with the geography teacher, using selected student artefacts and discussion excerpts as prompts. The teacher was invited to reflect on what she noticed in students' views, what connections she saw to disciplinary geography, and how she would build on students' starting points in her subsequent teaching. In the analysis, we examine students' accounts on two levels. Thematically, we identify what aspects of globalisation students observe, discuss, and imagine. Relationally, we examine how these everyday accounts connect to, extend, or diverge from the way globalisation is understood in disciplinary geography and represented in the Finnish geography textbook used in the class. Hammond's (2022) three spaces of geographical thought provide the organising frame: we map where students' accounts sit within and across the spaces of everyday life, school geography, and academic geography. For the teacher data, we examine how the teacher recognises and responds to different aspects of students' everyday knowledge, what connections she identifies to disciplinary geography, and how she plans to bridge students' starting points and disciplinary understanding in her teaching. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings First, the findings are expected to make the learner's starting point visible and show that students' everyday knowledge of globalisation is not homogeneous. We expect to identify recurring everyday themes — such as consumption, media, mobility, neighbourhood change, language, and identities. Beyond what students talk about, we expect that their accounts are different in reflecting on different spaces of geographical thinking, so that different ways to relate to disciplinary knowledge. Some may remain personal and locally bounded. Others may already demonstrate nascent geographical reasoning, connecting across scales or contexts in ways that gesture toward disciplinary understanding. Still others may be shaped by media narratives or public discourse rather than by personal experience or disciplinary knowledge. Each of these presents different pedagogical possibilities and challenges for bridging toward more powerful understanding. The analysis of the teacher's interpretation will illuminate how she reads this variety and plans to work with it — what she identifies as productive starting points, what she sees as needing development, and how she envisions connecting everyday knowledge to disciplinary geographical thinking. Second, the study is expected to enrich how knowledge recontextualisation is understood in powerful knowledge discussion. The analysis across the three spaces of geographical thought is anticipated to show that the movement of knowledge is not simply one-directional — from academic discipline through school curriculum to students. Students' everyday geographies can intersect with and feed back into school geography, while also resonating with concerns developed in academic geography. The teacher's pedagogical work involves reading students' everyday knowledge upward toward disciplinary connections, not only delivering disciplinary knowledge downward. This may support a more dynamic, bidirectional account of how geographical knowledge moves across the three spaces and contribute to a richer understanding of what bridging between everyday and disciplinary knowledge looks like in practice.
