Ignite Talk A School-Based “Workout” Project as a Health Education Intervention: Promoting Physical Activity, Wellbeing, and Health Literacy among Adolescents NIS Shymkent, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:Insufficient physical activity among adolescents represents a significant challenge for public health and education systems across Europe and globally. This issue is particularly evident in academically demanding school environments, where increased cognitive load often leads to sedentary lifestyles. European health education research highlights that low levels of physical activity negatively affect adolescents’ physical health, mental wellbeing, self-esteem, and self-regulation capacities (WHO, 2017; OECD, 2019). Consequently, schools are increasingly recognized as key settings for promoting health literacy, wellbeing, and sustainable health-related behaviors. Despite this recognition, traditional physical education (PE) practices often prioritize standardized performance norms and competitive outcomes. Such approaches may insufficiently address individual differences in physical abilities and health conditions, limiting student motivation and long-term engagement. This has led to calls within the European educational context for innovative, inclusive, and health-oriented pedagogical models that emphasize personalization, reflection, and student agency. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The “Workout” project was implemented as a year-long, multi-stage educational intervention using a qualitative pedagogical design. The preparatory stage involved the development of project regulations, establishment of safe workout infrastructure, and professional development for teachers supported by external workout specialists. During the diagnostic stage, students’ baseline physical fitness indicators were assessed alongside anonymous surveys exploring motivation, perceived barriers, and personal health-related goals. The theoretical stage focused on health education content, including biomechanics of bodyweight exercises, basic exercise physiology, training safety, recovery strategies, and nutrition fundamentals. Students developed individual training plans and maintained reflective training diaries. The practical stage combined group and individual training sessions and incorporated a peer-learning model. In addition to systematic observations, short semi-structured interviews were conducted with participating students to capture their perceptions of motivation, confidence, and wellbeing. An inclusive component was ensured through adaptive exercise programs developed in collaboration with medical professionals. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Quantitative data indicated significant improvements in students’ physical fitness and engagement. By the end of the project, 81% of students demonstrated improved strength and endurance indicators, while 85% reported increased participation in regular physical activity. Qualitative analysis of surveys, training diaries, and interviews revealed positive psychosocial outcomes. Approximately 78% of students reported increased motivation toward physical activity and greater confidence in their physical abilities. Improved self-regulation and health awareness were observed in 74% of participants, reflected in their ability to plan training, monitor progress, and apply knowledge related to recovery and nutrition. No substantial changes were observed in approximately 4% of students, highlighting the need for continued individualized support. The project culminated in a school-wide Records Festival and the establishment of the NIS Book of Records, functioning as a motivational health-promotion mechanism rather than a purely competitive assessment tool. The findings demonstrate that integrating health education principles into physical education through personalized, reflective, and inclusive practices can effectively promote adolescent wellbeing and health literacy. The “Workout” project offers a scalable model aligned with European health education priorities, supporting sustainable healthy lifestyles, psychosocial wellbeing, and student agency in health-related decision-making. Paper How Do Physical Activity and Social Media Use Predict the Study Wellbeing Profile of Comprehensive School Students? 1: Tampere University, Finland; 2: University of Helsinki, Finland; 3: University of Jyväskylä, Finland; 4: Jamk University of Applied Sciences, Finland Presenting Author:Study wellbeing has become an increasingly important area of research due to its strong links with students’ academic success, healthy development, and long‑term life outcomes. Although many adolescents in Finland are generally doing well, recent national and European data show a worrying increase in study burnout, highlighting a need for deeper examination of factors that may protect or undermine student wellbeing (Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, 2023; WHO Regional Office for Europe, 2020). The study draws on a bivariate model of study wellbeing, which conceptualizes engagement and burnout not as opposite ends of a single continuum but as related yet distinct constructs that may coexist in complex ways. Study burnout comprises exhaustion, cynicism, and inadequacy, while study engagement consists of vigor, dedication, and absorption (Bakker et al., 2008; Schaufeli et al., 2002). Previous work has identified several distinct latent profiles, in which these dimensions combine, such as highly engaged students with low burnout, highly burned‑out students with low engagement, and mixed profiles where engagement coexists with exhaustion or inadequacy (Salmela-Aro & Upadyaya, 2020; Räihä et al., 2024). Previous study show that study wellbeing is shaped by a complex interplay of individual and environmental factors (Salmela-Aro et al., 2022). While age and gender differences in study wellbeing have previously been identified (Read et al., 2022; Vansoeterstede et al., 2023), study engagement and study burnout are also socially embedded and can spread within the school community (Mendoza & King, 2020). Accordingly, socially embedded practices such as social media use and lifestyle habits like physical activity (Owen et al., 2016; Jussila et al., 2023), are likely to contribute to variations in students’ overall experiences of study wellbeing. Evidence consistently shows that regular physical activity benefits mental health, emotional functioning, and academic performance, and may protect against burnout by increasing energy, positive affect, and social connectedness (Owen et al., 2016; Tang et al., 2021). In contrast, accumulating research links heavy social media use with psychological distress, reduced school engagement, and elevated burnout (Huang, 2022; Riehm et al., 2019; Srisarajivakul et al., 2025, Sohn et al., 2019). Despite the importance of these behaviors, we have limited understanding of how physical activity and social media use relate to person centered wellbeing profiles rather than isolated indicators. Moreover, we have a lack of insight into how class-level contexts shape the distribution of these profiles. To address these gaps, this study examines:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Context and participants The study was conducted in Finnish primary and lower secondary teaching practice schools, which collaborate closely with universities and reflect diverse demographic and socioeconomic contexts. The participating schools followed the “local school” principle, serving students from their immediate areas and representing both urban and rural settings. The sample consisted of 792 students (53.6% girls; 43.3% boys) from 5th grade (n = 345, M_age = 11.19) and 8th grade (n = 447, M_age = 14.18) groups drawn from 70 classes across 10 schools. Class sizes ranged from 12 to 24 students. Participation was voluntary, and both student assent and parental consent were obtained. Data collection took place in September–October 2024 using electronic questionnaires administered in school settings. Measurements Study wellbeing was assessed through measures of study engagement and study burnout scales. Engagement was measured with a 9 item scale covering vigor, dedication, and absorption (α = .95), adapted from the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale for Students. Burnout was assessed using three subdimensions: exhaustion (3 items, α = .75), cynicism (3 items, α = .87), and inadequacy (4 items, α = .89). Items were rated on a 7 point Likert scale (1 = strongly disagree; 7 = strongly agree). Physical activity was measured with a validated item from the WHO HBSC study, asking how many days in the past week students engaged in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity, with response options ranging from 0 to 7 days. Social media use was measured with a single item asking how many hours per day students spend on social media, with options from “not at all” to “8 hours or more.” Analytic Strategy The core analysis consisted of Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) using factor scores for exhaustion, cynicism, inadequacy, and engagement to identify study wellbeing profiles. Model selection relied on information criteria (CAIC, BIC, ABIC), bootstrapped likelihood ratio tests, theoretical interpretability, and entropy values. A five profile solution was selected. Differences in physical activity and social media use across profiles were examined using the BCH method, while gender and grade differences were tested using the DCAT approach. Given students’ nested structure within classes, the study additionally applied Multilevel Latent Profile Analysis (MLPA) to examine classroom level variation and identify higher level latent class profiles. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Latent Profile Analysis identified five distinct study wellbeing profiles among students: three showing a negative association between engagement and burnout—engaged (42%), burned-out (10%), and average (30%)—and two bivariate profiles—exhausted-inadequacy (11%) and cynical (6%). Bipolar profiles dominated in the data (the engaged, average, and burned-out profiles). Primary school students were more likely to belong to beneficial profiles compared to lower secondary school students. Moreover, girls were more often represented in the profiles with exhausted-inadequacy and burned-out profiles, while boys were overrepresented in the cynical profile. Additionally, results showed that students reported engaging in physical activity for at least one hour on most days, with the engaged profile showing significantly higher activity than the average profile, while the remaining profiles showed broadly similar levels. In contrast, clear differences emerged in social media use: students in the burned‑out profile reported the highest use and those in the engaged profile the lowest, with other profiles falling in between. Last, class-level clustering revealed two broader class level profiles, indicating the influence of contextual factors on students’ study wellbeing. Classes categorized as having a lower risk of burnout (68%) included proportionally more engaged students and fewer exhausted–inadequate and burned-out students, whereas higher risk classes (32%) were characterized by a greater concentration of exhausted–inadequate and burned-out students and fewer engaged students. The findings of this study underscore the importance of recognizing the diverse ways in which students experience study wellbeing and highlight both individual and contextual factors that shape these experiences. Moreover, these results provide insights that supporting students in increasing daily physical activity while helping them recognize and reduce the negative impacts of excessive social media use may be an effective approach to enhancing their study wellbeing. Paper Discursive Constructions of Turnover among Early Childhood Education Teachers in Finland 1: Tampere University, Finland; 2: University of Helsinki, Finland Presenting Author:Teacher turnover remains a critical challenge across European and international early childhood education and care (ECEC) systems. It´s consistently identified as a threat to educational quality, equity, and workforce sustainability (European Commission, 2019; Grant et al., 2019; OECD, 2019, 2020; Sirvio et al., 2023; UNESCO, 2021). Despite this recognition, turnover is predominantly explained through individualised frameworks focusing on stress, burnout, or resilience. While such approaches provide important insights, they risk obscuring the structural and ethical dimensions of professional well-being, particularly in care-oriented professions such as ECEC. In line with ECER Network 8’s focus on health, well-being, and the working lives of education professionals, this study advances a theoretically grounded approach that conceptualises teacher turnover as an ethically meaningful response to working conditions rather than an individual failure to cope. The study brings together three interrelated theoretical concepts, intensified work life, demoralization, and the calling discourse, to examine how contemporary ECEC systems shape the moral sustainability of professional life. Research question: The concept of intensified work life provides a critical lens for understanding educators’ well-being within contemporary ECEC systems. Intensification refers to the cumulative expansion of workload, responsibility, pace, and emotional demands without corresponding increases in resources, time, or professional autonomy (Jakonen, 2014; Kubicek et al., 2015; Mauno et al., 2022). Across Europe, ECEC teachers face growing expectations related to pedagogical quality, documentation, inclusion, and accountability, often under conditions of staff shortages and constrained funding (European Commission, 2019; OECD, 2019; Sirvio et al. 2023). Within Network 8 research traditions, work intensification is understood not only as a quantitative increase in tasks but also as a qualitative and moral intensification. ECEC teachers are expected to ensure children’s holistic well-being, compensate for systemic shortcomings, and maintainhigh ethical standards despite structural limitations. Such conditions place educators in ethically vulnerable positions, where professional responsibility increasingly relies on individual endurance and self-sacrifice (UNESCO, 2021; Young & Rushton, 2017). Over time, intensified work life undermines occupational well-being and the sustainability of professional engagement. To theorise the moral consequences of intensified work life, the study draws on demoralization as articulated by Santoro (2011, 2018). Demoralization differs from burnout in that it centres on ethical conflict rather than emotional exhaustion. Demoralized teachers remaincommitted to children, education, and care, yet experience persistent distress when institutional conditions prevent them from enacting what they believe constitutes good and ethical practice. Within European ECEC contexts, demoralization emerges when teachers are held morally accountable for quality and outcomes while lacking the structural conditions required to fulfil these responsibilities (Santoro, 2011, 2018). OECD analyses of workforce sustainability suggest that such value–practice incongruence undermines retention across education systems (OECD, 2020). From this perspective, leaving the profession can be understood as a morally reasoned response to sustained ethical strain rather than reduced commitment. A further theoretical lens is the construction of ECEC teaching as calling work. International research shows that early childhood teaching is frequently framed as intrinsically meaningful, altruistic, and rooted in care, particularly within European welfare-state traditions (Duffy & Autin, 2013). While this discourse can strengthen professional identity and purpose, it also functions as a normative framework that legitimises excessive demands, low material rewards, and blurred professional boundaries (Maczulskij, 2013). Policy discussions increasingly acknowledge that reliance on vocational commitment can mask structural problems and shift responsibility for systemic shortcomings onto individual educators (European Commission, 2019; OECD, 2020). When dedication becomes equated with endurance, teachers may normalise overwork and ethical compromise as indicators of professional worth, intensifying moral strain and contributing to decisions to leave the profession. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts discursive psychology as its overarching theoretical and methodological framework (Edwards & Potter, 1992; Wetherell et al., 2001). Discursive psychology examines how people use language to perform social actions, construct meanings, and manage accountability in situated contexts. From this perspective, accounts of turnover are not treated as transparent reflections of inner states or causal explanations but as meaning-making practices through which participants negotiate professional identity, responsibility, and moral legitimacy. Data were collected through an online questionnaire distributed via social media platforms, primarily Facebook groups oriented toward early childhood education professionals in Finland. The survey was open for three weeks and received responses from 469 participants aged 23–64. For this study, only respondents who indicated that they had left the ECE teacher profession and provided responses to the open-ended questions were included. The final dataset consisted of 128 qualitative responses. The length of responses varied considerably, reflecting a common characteristic of open-ended survey data. The average response length was approximately 45 words, with a median of 13 words. The shortest response consisted of a single word, while the longest response contained 702 words, indicating substantial variation in depth and detail. This variability was taken into account during analysis, with attention paid to how even brief responses performed discursive work. The questionnaire was developed using triangulation in its design, drawing on prior research on professional well-being, as well as policy documents related to Finnish ECE. This approach aimed to ensure conceptual breadth while allowing respondents to articulate their experiences in their own terms. The analysis proceeded through iterative readings of the data, focusing on how turnover was constructed, justified, and made morally intelligible. Particular attention was paid to recurring linguistic patterns, rhetorical strategies, and interpretative repertoires through which participants oriented to work demands, ethical concerns, and professional responsibility. The identification of discursive patterns was grounded in repeated engagement with the data and refined through collaborative discussions among the authors. Regarding reflexivity, the first author led the analytical process and initial manuscript drafting. All co-authors participated in analytical discussions, interpretation of findings, and critical review of emerging analyses. Analytic credibility was supported through iterative dialogue and collective sense-making rather than claims of inter-rater reliability. No conflicts of interest were present. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes to research on ECE teachers’ health and well-being by demonstrating how turnover can function as a morally and ethically grounded response to unsustainable working conditions rather than as an indicator of individual failure or weakened commitment. Through a discursive psychological lens, former ECE teachers construct leaving the profession as a professionally responsible action when organizational conditions undermine their capacity to support children’s holistic well-being and uphold ethical standards. The findings highlight ethical sustainability as a central dimension of professional well-being in early childhood education. Intensified work demands, limited resources, and blurred professional boundaries were described not merely as stressful but as morally compromising, producing ongoing ethical strain. Over time, the normalization of self-sacrifice eroded the sustainability of professional practice, making withdrawal a means of preserving integrity and well-being rather than an act of disengagement (Santoro, 2018; Menon et al., 2024). For ECER Network 8, the study underscores the importance of moving beyond individualized models of burnout or resilience toward structurally and ethically informed understandings of teacher well-being. Turnover emerges as a critical indicator of moral distress and organizational failure to support ethical practice, rather than a problem located within individual teachers (Brownlee et al., 2016). Practically, improving educator well-being and retention requires more than material adjustments such as pay or staffing. It demands institutional recognition of ethical work, realistic professional boundaries, and working conditions that allow teachers to enact pedagogical values without chronic self-sacrifice. Supporting ethical sustainability is therefore essential for maintaining educational quality and a healthy, enduring workforce (Haahr et al., 2020). Although grounded in the Finnish ECE context, these discursive patterns may resonate across care professions and educational systems experiencing intensified work demands and ethical strain, contributing to broader discussions on sustainable professionalism, moral well-being, and conditions for humane, impactful educational work. Paper Supporting Post-Maternity Teachers’ Professional Adaptation Through the Integration of Lesson Study and Mentoring: An Action Research Approach Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Physics and Mathematics Astana, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:Returning to work after maternity leave represents a significant professional and emotional transition for teachers. This period is often accompanied by stress, anxiety, temporary loss of confidence, and the challenge of reintegrating into established school routines and expectations (Wiese & Heidemeier, 2012). Successful reintegration is influenced by teachers’ self-regulatory skills and the level of support provided by the school community (Franzoi et al., 2024; Kokubo et al., 2021). Although teacher well-being has gained global attention, this specific transition remains understudied in Kazakhstan, where the profession is predominantly female and maternity leave is a common career break for early- and mid-career teachers (Chernobay & Tashibaeva, 2020). Therefore, there is a clear need for support mechanisms that recognise both the professional and emotional challenges of returning teachers. Teacher professional development is recognised as a key driver of educational quality in Kazakhstan (Orleu, 2023; 2024). However, existing programmes seldom address the unique reintegration needs of post-maternity teachers, who are often expected to resume full responsibilities immediately upon their return. To address this gap, this study explores an integrated support approach incorporating Lesson Study and mentoring. Lesson Study encourages collaborative instructional design and reflection, enabling teachers to analyse student learning more deeply (Lewis, 2016; Saito & Atencio, 2020). At the same time, mentoring helps rebuild confidence, provides emotional reassurance, and supports professional identity restoration (O’Sullivan,2020). This action research project (Timperley et al., 2007) was conducted in a secondary school and included seven teachers: four returning teachers (two chemistry and two mathematics) and three experienced mentors in the same subjects. The intervention combined collaborative lesson planning, observation, and reflection through Lesson Study cycles, together with personalised mentoring sessions tailored to individual needs. Returning teachers were supported as capable professionals re-entering the field, rather than as novices starting again. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, surveys, classroom observations, and reflective journals. Thematic analysis indicated several positive outcomes. First, teachers reported increased professional confidence as they regained trust in their instructional competencies. Second, teaching quality improved due to more student-centred and evidence-based decision-making. Third, collegial relationships strengthened, reducing isolation and fostering a supportive environment. Fourth, teachers experienced renewed purpose and a stronger sense of belonging in the school community. Fifth, emotional well-being increased as anxiety decreased and coping skills improved during the transition period (Rakhimbekova, 2024; Trent & Gao,2020). The findings highlight the critical role of school-based support systems in addressing both pedagogical and emotional aspects of post-maternity return. The integrated model developed in this study demonstrated its potential to enhance teacher retention and promote a more inclusive professional culture that values personal life transitions. It also emphasises that maternity leave should be viewed as a temporary pause rather than a professional setback, and that teachers returning from such breaks should be empowered through structured support (Aitjanov et al.,2025). This study provides meaningful implications for educational leaders and policymakers. Supporting returning teachers should become a recognised component of teacher development policy in Kazakhstan, ensuring a stable and motivated workforce. Additionally, the model can be adapted across different subject areas and schools to build sustainable professional learning systems that respond to diverse career pathways. In conclusion, combining Lesson Study with mentoring offers an effective mechanism to facilitate the successful reintegration of teachers returning from maternity leave. The model strengthens instructional practice, enhances collegiality, and improves teacher well-being. By addressing a previously overlooked aspect of professional life, this research contributes to more responsive and humane approaches to teacher professional development, both in Kazakhstan and internationally. Ensuring that returning teachers feel respected, supported, and professionally valued enables them to thrive and continue contributing meaningfully to student learning and school improvement. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study used an action research methodology to examine how an integrated Lesson Study–mentoring model can support teachers returning to work after maternity leave. Action research was chosen because it enables practitioners to reflect on their own context while implementing improvements during the process itself. Since returning teachers often face reduced confidence, emotional strain, and difficulty reconnecting with school routines, this approach allowed the study to capture both pedagogical and personal aspects of reintegration. The research was conducted in a secondary school in Kazakhstan and involved four returning teachers—two chemistry and two mathematics teachers—who had recently resumed work after maternity leave. Support was provided by three mentors with complementary backgrounds: a chemistry teacher, a mathematics teacher, and a physics teacher. Purposeful sampling ensured that mentors’ expertise aligned with participants’ reintegration needs. The intervention consisted of two interconnected components. First, the Lesson Study cycle created a collaborative structure for co-planning lessons, observing teaching, gathering evidence of student learning, and refining strategies based on reflection. Through participation, returning teachers re-engaged with curriculum expectations, strengthened pedagogical reasoning, and gradually rebuilt confidence in instructional decision-making. Lesson Study also fostered collegial dialogue and reduced isolation by positioning teachers within a supportive professional community. Second, personalised mentoring addressed emotional and psychological reintegration challenges. One-to-one meetings offered a safe space for teachers to articulate concerns, clarify expectations, and receive guidance relevant to their transition back into full-time work. These sessions played an important role in restoring teachers’ professional identity and supporting the balance between personal and professional responsibilities. A multi-method data collection strategy provided a comprehensive understanding of participants’ experiences. Semi-structured interviews captured emotional reflections; surveys measured changes in confidence; classroom observations documented shifts in practice; and reflective journals traced developmental progress. Triangulation across these data sources strengthened the study’s credibility. Data were analysed through thematic analysis, allowing patterns related to confidence building, collegial support, instructional development, and emotional adjustment to emerge clearly. Ethical procedures—such as informed consent, confidentiality, and voluntary participation—were followed throughout. Overall, this methodology offered a holistic lens for understanding how structured, school-based support can facilitate both emotional adjustment and professional growth for teachers returning from maternity leave. By combining collaborative inquiry with personalised mentoring, the approach contributed to a smoother, more confident reintegration into professional roles. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study demonstrates that integrating Lesson Study with personalised mentoring provides an effective support mechanism for teachers returning from maternity leave. The combined model addressed both instructional and emotional elements of reintegration, enabling teachers to rebuild confidence, re-establish their professional identity, and reconnect with school routines. This is particularly relevant in Kazakhstan, where maternity leave is common but structured reintegration systems are still developing. Participation in the Lesson Study cycle helped teachers re-engage with curriculum requirements through collaborative lesson planning, targeted classroom observation, and evidence-based reflection. These activities improved pedagogical reasoning and strengthened instructional decision-making. Working within a collegial team reduced professional isolation and encouraged open discussion of challenges, which contributed to a more supportive reintegration process. The mentoring component complemented Lesson Study by offering individualised emotional and psychological support. One-to-one sessions provided a secure environment for returning teachers to express concerns, clarify expectations, and navigate shifting responsibilities. Mentoring helped teachers manage anxiety linked to their return to work, balance personal and professional roles, and reflect on their progress. This personalised dimension enhanced overall well-being and supported long-term professional stability. Overall, the findings emphasise that maternity leave should not be viewed as a professional interruption but as a temporary pause that requires thoughtful reintegration strategies. When schools implement structured, empathetic support systems, teachers return with renewed confidence, motivation, and clarity. These insights hold practical value for school leaders and policymakers, who may consider embedding reintegration frameworks within broader teacher development policies. The integrated model proposed in this study offers a practical and adaptable approach that can enhance teacher retention, strengthen professional communities, and contribute to improved instructional quality.
