Paper Teaching Practices that Foster Functional Classroom Peer Ecology and Learning 1: Tampere University, Finland; 2: University of Helsinki; 3: University of Stellenbosch; 4: University of Eastern Finland Presenting Author:The purpose of this systematic literature review is to provide a synthesis on the ways in which teachers can support a functional classroom peer ecology as part of their pedagogical practices. Research questions are following:
Drawing on Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system theory, we use the term classroom peer ecology to describe the social environment of the classroom where peers interact and influence each other (Bronfenbrenner 1979; Bronfenbrenner & Morris, 2007; see also Lewin, 1935; Vygotsky, 1978). There is strong empirical research evidence that peers play an important role in students’ academic achievement (Ozyildirim & Karadağ, 2024; Wentzel et al., 2021), learning motivation (Kilday & Ryan, 2022; Kindermann, 2016), and school engagement (Ulmanen et al., 2014; Weyns et al., 2018). Positive peer relations play a crucial role also in enhancing students' mental well-being, boosting their resilience, self-worth, and overall life satisfaction (Alsarrani et al., 2022). Students themselves identify peers as the most important determinant of their school engagement, together with teachers (Gowing, 2019). Unfortunately, peer interactions do not automatically result in positive outcomes. Loneliness, being bullied, and experiences of exclusion have serious consequences for students. They may result in disengagement from school (Haugan et al., 2019; Jefferson et al., 2023) and mental health problems such as depression, low self-esteem, and suicidal ideation (Gürcan et al. 2023; Zahrani, 2024). Peers can also affect student learning and academic performance negatively. This is particularly evident when students seek approval from peers who exhibit low engagement with school-related activities or when the prevailing classroom culture undermines the value of academic success (Boehnke, 2008). According to these studies the classroom peer ecology characterised high by trust, prosocial behaviours and mutual support, and low status hierarchy and conflict, best supports students´ wellbeing and learning. Students' experiences of how respectful and friendly peer interaction is shown to vary between classes, even within the same school. Much of the variation is explained by teachers' actions in the classroom – what they do in the classroom and how they interact with their students (Endedijk, 2022; Hughes, 2012; Kilday & Ryan, 2022; Muñoz-Hurtado, 2018). There has been no systematic review that has provided a synthesis of the empirical evidence on the effective means through which teachers can cultivate a functional classroom peer ecology. We aim to bridge this gap in the literature. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This systematic review was conducted with the PRISMA 2020 protocol (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) (Page et al., 2021). We conducted a literature search of five electronic databases: Education Collection from ProQuest, Web of Science, Academic Search Ultimate from EBSCO, Scopus, and PsycINFO. The electronic databases were selected due to their wide coverage and relevance to the field. The following inclusion criteria were applied: (i) scientific articles that explored the impact of the teacher’s actions on the classroom peer ecology, (ii) focused on general education students between 7 and 16 years old, (iii) published in peer-reviewed journals between 2008 and 2023, and (iv) included empirical data (not reviews or theoretical articles). The database search resulted in 4415 articles. Studies were exported to the Zotero reference management system, where duplicates were removed, resulting in 1889 articles. First, the articles were screened based on titles and abstracts. Through this initial screening process, 420 potentially relevant articles were selected for the full text review. In both screening phases, two researchers independently assessed the articles. Additionally, the quality of the studies included was assessed to determine their relevance and trustworthiness using the JBI Sumari quality assessment tool. Any disagreements were solved through discussion until consensus was reached. In total, 151 studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the review. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings We identified three major themes relevant for the characterization of teacher practices promoting functional classroom peer ecology: 1) teacher–student relationships; 2) instructional practices; and 3) classroom management. These practices lie at the heart of the teaching profession, which implies that improving the peer ecology often requires only enhancing everyday pedagogical work – not adding extra tasks to teachers’ duties. Firstly, the reviewed articles proved a strong connection between the quality of the teacher–student relationships and the peer ecology. The teacher’s emotional support, sense of equality, and attunement to the students’ position in the peer group seemed to have a positive impact on the classroom peer ecology. Especially interesting was the finding of teacher attunement to classroom ecology. It seemed that being aware of the students’ social status in the group is an important prerequisite for the teacher to be able to manage a functional peer ecology in the classroom. Instructional practices refer to the pedagogical methods and strategies teachers use to deliver lessons aiming to help students to achieve their educational goals. We found four subcategories for instructional practices: co-operative teaching methods, approaches to teach social and emotional skills, strategies to support the student’s deep learning, and strategies to support student autonomy. Interesting finding was the relation between the functional classroom peer ecology and instructional support. This strongly indicates that teaching and fostering a functional classroom peer ecology are complementary rather than competing priorities in school. The studies also showed that classroom management through classroom rules, behaviour management, feedback, and seating and grouping arrangements had an impact on peer interaction. This kind of management also helps to foster academic achievement by creating a conductive classroom environment for learning (Korpershoek et al., 2016), showing, again, that learning and a functional peer ecology are tightly intertwined. Paper Examining the Link Between Teaching Quality and Student Well-Being Using Multilevel Models University College of Teacher Education Vorarlberg, Austria Presenting Author:Students well-being has received increasing attention in educational research (OECD, 2023; Rathmann & Hurrelmann, 2018). Results indicate that student well-being is closely associated with greater cognitive resources and higher levels of learning motivation (Hascher et al., 2018; OECD, 2017). Students well-being is defined as an individual state involving positive and negative emotions and cognitions related to the school context and is commonly conceptualized as a multidimensional construct (Borgonovi & Pál, 2016). This paper adopts Hascher’s six-component model as its conceptual framework (2012). Specifically, the six components include: three positive dimensions – positive attitudes toward school, enjoyment in school, and positive academic self-concept, and three negative dimensions – worries in school, physical complaints in school, and social problems in school (Hascher & Mori, 2024). In order to promote students well-being, it is essential to identify the factors that influence it. By now, relatively robust evidence exists on the association between school well-being and social factors, such as relationships with teachers or classmates (Poulou, 2020; Varela et al., 2019). Compared to social factors, the effects of teaching quality on students well-being remain comparatively underexplored. Although research in this area remains limited, the available evidence consistently indicates that high-quality instruction is linked to enhanced student well-being (Gysin, 2018; Ott, 2021; 2024). According to Klieme (2019), teaching quality can be classified into three core dimensions: classroom management, constructive support, and cognitive activation. Research indicates that the provision of constructive support positively influences students well-being (Grommé et al., 2023; Leighton et al., 2016). A similar relationship has been found for high cognitive activation in the classroom (Gysin, 2018; Ott, 2021; 2024). While previous research has demonstrated associations between independent teaching quality dimensions and specific aspects of student well-being, it remains unclear how all three dimensions of teaching quality interact with the six components of students well-being. Moreover, teaching quality exhibits greater similarity within classes than between classes. Therefore, analyses should take into account the nested structure of students within classes.The present study addresses the following research question: How are the three dimensions of teaching quality (classroom management, constructive support, and cognitive activation) related to the six components of students well-being – three positive dimensions – positive attitudes toward school, enjoyment in school, and positive academic self-concept, and three negative dimensions – worries in school, physical complaints in school, and social problems in school – while taking into account the effect of class membership? Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used For this paper, data from the project "Lebenswelten 2025" (Jugendforschung Pädagogische Hochschulen Österreich, 2026) of pupils from Austria are used. The data was collected via online survey. The survey took place between March and April 2025 and was administered by the class teachers. The students are approximately 14 to 18 years old and are either at the end of lower secondary school or at upper secondary school. This representative random sample was drawn by the Vorarlberg Regional Statistical Office. The response rate roughly 60 percent. The realised sample comprises 15,742 young people from 950 classes. The data was weighted according to state, school type and gender. School well-being was measured using six scales based on Hascher (2012): three positive dimensions – positive attitudes toward school (example item: School seems meaningful to me.), enjoyment in school (example item: Have you been happy at school in the past few weeks because you were able to do something you enjoy?), and positive academic self-concept (example item: I can easily solve problems with the material I learn at school.), and three negative dimensions – worries in school (example item: Have you been worried about school in the past few weeks?), physical complaints in school (example item: Have you had stomach aches because of school in the past few weeks?), and social problems in school (example item: Have you felt like an outsider in your class in the past few weeks?). For the analyses of teaching quality, the following scales are included: classroom management (example item: We worked well in the last lesson.), constructive support (example item: My teacher is nice to me even when I make a mistake.), cognitive activation (example item: My teacher asks questions that I have to think about very carefully.). In addition, we control for effects of language spoken at home, socioeconomic background, educational background, gender and school type. The analysis followed a two-step procedure. In the first step, correlations between all variables were examined. The second step accounted for the hierarchical structure of the data: students were nested within classes, and six multilevel models – one for each component of student well-being – were estimated. In these models, pupils were specified at level 1 and classes at level 2, allowing for an investigation of the associations between teaching quality and students’ school well-being. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The analyses showed that all six components of student well-being exhibited substantial variance at the class level. This suggests that students well-being is not only shaped by individual-level factors but also by the class environment, underscoring the relevance of class-level influences. Across the six multilevel models, teaching quality indicators explained a meaningful share of the variance in students’ well-being at both the individual and classroom levels. Preliminary analyses show that positive attitudes and enjoyment at school were most strongly associated with constructive support, while classroom management and cognitive activation showed smaller positive effects. Students school-related self-esteem was positively linked to both constructive support and classroom management, while cognitive activation was negatively associated with self-esteem. School-related worries, physical complaints, and social problems were most strongly associated with class level. Across all models, constructive support and classroom management were consistently linked to lower levels of these burdens. By contrast, cognitive activation showed a consistent positive association with worries and complaints, suggesting a contribution to higher levels of stress or burden. All in all, student well-being, while theoretically individual, is influenced by classroom and instructional conditions. All three dimensions of teaching quality – constructive support, classroom management, and cognitive activation – are linked to students well-being. The associations depend on how well-being is operationalized, with positive aspects like enjoyment or negative aspects like school-related worries showing different patterns. These findings underscore the need to consider teaching quality multidimensionally, as focusing on a single dimension is insufficient to promote students well-being, highlighting the importance of a balanced approach. Paper Art as Pedagogy for Mental Health Education: Effects of Art-Based Meditation on Youth Mental Resilience, Well-Being, and Self-Regulation 1: University of Calgary, Canada; 2: University of Calgary, Canada Presenting Author:There is a mental health crisis around the world (APA, 2020). Youth and young adults (ages 12-25) are notably at risk. In adolescence, depression is a leading cause of illness and suicide is the third leading cause of death (WHO, 2020). Most diagnosed mental health conditions begin during this time (Kessler et al., 2007), but recent studies indicate declining mental health and well-being in the general population (Keyes, 2006; Sutcliffe et al., 2023). This is a serious and urgent problem (UNESCO, 2020). In secondary and post-secondary school, mental health resources are stretched by rising cases of mental illness. For the general population, teachers have become the frontline tasked with promoting mental health, despite limited research-informed pedagogy. There is a need to glean knowledge from all fields that might inform new approaches (Atkins, 2010). The field of arts education offers promise, with distinct knowledge on the relationship between art, brain, and mind (Csikszentmihalyi & Robinson, 1990; Edwards; 1998; Eisner, 2002; Gardner, 2008; Zeki, 2001). In mental health practices, visual art has been marginalized to creative expression and art therapy (Curry & Kasser, 2005; Haeyen, 2019; Haeyen & Hinz, 2020; Kapitan, 2012; Lee, 2015; Zhang et al., 2015). However, the emergence of transdisciplinary fields, such as neuroaesthetics (Chatterjee & Vartanian, 2014; Vittorio, 2009; Nadal & Pearce, 2011; Pearce et al., 2016), offer brain-based explanations of artistic process that reposition it as a tool for health and well-being (Carew & Magsamen, 2010; Golden, 2024; Magsamen, 2019). Art-making induces positive mental states (Chilton, 2013; Drake et al., 2014; Sandmire et al., 2012), and scholars identify visual-tactile process as a causal mechanism (Curry & Kasser, 2005; Kimport & Robbins, 2012; Monti et al., 2006). Engaging in visual art can induce a flow state, a positive mental state of ultimate engagement (Csikszentmihalyi, 2014; Kapitan, 2012; Lee, 2015). Recently, Martin and Colp (2022) identified vistactivity (visual-tactile process over time) as a trigger for shifting mental states and accessing flow. Martin & Colp (2022) investigated vistactivity as experiential learning (Kolb 2014) with adults. Using Brain Smoothies® Art-MedsTM, they measured effects on mental health capacity, finding a statistically significant increase; plus evidence of two, positive mental states elicited by Art-Meds: 1) flow, and 2) mental floating, a perceivable mental shift, activated during vistactivity (Martin & Colp, 2022). Findings support learning through art as an effective pedagogy for learning how to recognize and shift mental states, and to bolster mental resilience. With such powerful evidence, it was imperative to test the method as promising pedagogy for youth mental health education. This study hypothesized positive effects on mental health capacity; and posed new hypotheses of positive effects on mental well-being, and self-regulation (Bandura, 1991). Results with post-secondary students were statistically significant, finding increases in mental health capacity (t(31) = -2.79, p < 0.05, d =0.50), and mental well-being (t(31) = -2.48, p < 0.05, d = .44). Results with junior high students (N=190) are anticipated in June, and will include findings on mental health capacity, mental well-being, and results on self-regulation. Through this work, we contribute new knowledge to the fields of mental health and education with empirical evidence from an aggregate sample of 211 youth: learning through art promotes mental health. Further, we hope to contribute to practice in identifying an evidence-based pedagogy that builds mental health capacity, bolsters well-being, and promotes skills for self-regulation (pending). Thus, we contribute much-needed knowledge for educational theory and practice, especially for teachers seeking pedagogies that promote mental resilience. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This paper presents findings from studies with undergraduate students and junior high students. Both studies employed a one-way within-subjects pre-post survey design. Participants included 31 undergraduate students and approximately 180 students in grades 7-9, for an aggregated sample of approximately 211 (Final numbers TBC). Data were collected using pre-and-post surveys to assess score changes before and after treatment. Informed consent was acquired through ethics-certified protocols (IRB). Participants under 18 required caregiver consent. Students who did not consent (or declined) were included in class activities, with optional activities during data collection. Each survey took 15-20 minutes. All students received a free Brain Smoothies paint-with-water canvas and brush. Participants received the treatment within core-course learning. Each session was facilitated using Brain Smoothies Art-Meds, including reflection activities with information on neuro-cognitive processes. Each activity involved a special canvas (water looks like paint, then vanishes), starting with a simple pattern (like concentric circles), then using intuitive brush strokes, sustained for 20 minutes. During the activity, the facilitator prompted awareness of mental states, and pushing past negative thoughts or feelings (i.e. boredom or impatience). They were prompted to keep making marks with eyes on the canvas until time was up. The survey for all participants gathered demographic information, followed by a scale for Mental Health Capacity (Martin & Colp, 2022), and a scale for Mental Well-Being (Keyes, 2013). The scales used with junior high were identical to undergraduates’, with an additional new scale to assess changes in ability for Self-Regulation of Mental States. All items were rated as level of agreement using a 5-point Likert scale. [Scale reliability reported in full paper]. Change-based analyses utilized the total score for each domain that was obtained from the summation of individual items. Prior to engaging in any analytic data analysis, an examination of missing data and parametric assumptions was conducted, and assessment of scale reliability. Analyses of internal consistency were performed (SPSS) using Coefficient alpha to assess rigor. A series of dependent samples t-tests were employed to examine whether treatment effects resulted in statistically significant changes in variables of interest. Results and Discussion will be included in the full paper, with junior high findings pending completion prior to the conference. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This presentation shares findings on the effects of learning through art for mental health education. Results are encouraging and indicate there is much more work to be done. With two samples representing youth age 12-25, we hope to aggregate findings for fulsome picture of the effects across secondary and post-secondary students. However, we also are prepared to highlight any differences between them, and to learn from the results. The positive effects on undergraduate student mental health capacity and mental well-being contribute meaningful knowledge to the fields of mental health and education. They also provide empirical evidence of an effective pedagogical approach for mental health education. Art as pedagogy in mental health provides a platform for the learner to experience and activate a variety of mental states. When reflected on, students build skills for mindfulness and self-awareness, with deep understanding of how to do art-based meditation, and why it works. Teachers can leverage this to promote mental health in schools. It’s one small but proactive step towards empowering teachers facing a daunting crisis. References Full APA citations available. Paper Reframing School Wellbeing Through a Social Pedagogy Lens: Family-School-Welfare Relationships in Times of Poly-Crisis University of Bari Aldo Moro, Italy Presenting Author:In recent years, school wellbeing has progressively become a strategic priority within European educational policies and school development agendas. Wellbeing is increasingly framed as a multidimensional concept encompassing mental, emotional, social and relational dimensions, and as a prerequisite for learning, participation and inclusion. However, despite this conceptual expansion, dominant policy and practice approaches continue to interpret school wellbeing primarily as an individual outcome, to be promoted through targeted interventions aimed at pupils’ resilience, emotional regulation and behavioural adjustment. This tendency becomes particularly problematic in the current context of poly-crisis, characterised by the entanglement of social, economic, educational, political and cultural crises that deeply affect children, families, schools and local communities. In such conditions, educational inequalities, family vulnerability, social marginalisation and institutional fragmentation increasingly shape students’ opportunities for learning and wellbeing. Consequently, the conceptualisation of school wellbeing as an individual and decontextualised attribute risks obscuring the structural, relational and political dimensions that condition educational experience. The present contribution aims to critically reframe school wellbeing through a social pedagogy perspective, focusing on the relational and institutional nexus between schools, families and local welfare systems. Drawing on the theoretical traditions of social pedagogy and educational welfare, the paper conceptualises wellbeing as a collective and socially situated educational process, embedded in community relationships, professional practices and policy arrangements.

The main aim of the paper is to offer a theoretically grounded framework for understanding school wellbeing as a core dimension of educational and social citizenship, situated at the intersection of educational practices, family life and welfare policies. More specifically, the contribution seeks to:
The theoretical framework integrates three complementary perspectives. First, social pedagogy provides a relational and contextual understanding of education, emphasising community, participation, recognition and social justice as central educational values. From this perspective, wellbeing emerges as a process of social inclusion and educational belonging rather than as a psychological condition. Second, the concept of educational welfare is used to interpret school wellbeing policies as part of broader welfare regimes and governance arrangements that redistribute responsibilities between schools, families and social services. Third, an ecological and critical approach to education and health promotion is adopted to examine how institutional structures, professional cultures and policy frameworks shape educational practices and opportunities for wellbeing. By placing family-school-welfare relationships at the centre of the analysis, the paper explicitly addresses the contextual determinants of health and wellbeing education and responds to the growing need for theoretically informed approaches capable of linking school development, community partnerships and policy innovation in times of profound social transformation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a qualitative and theoretically driven research design based on a critical policy and conceptual analysis. The methodological approach combines two complementary components. The first component consists of a critical analysis of selected European and national policy documents addressing school wellbeing, health promotion and educational inclusion. The analysis focuses on how wellbeing is defined, operationalised and linked to educational responsibilities, professional roles and institutional arrangements. Attention is paid to the positioning of families and welfare services within policy narratives, and to the implicit models of school–community relationships embedded in official frameworks. The second component involves a systematic theoretical analysis of key contributions from social pedagogy, educational welfare studies and critical health education research. Through an integrative review and interpretative synthesis of theoretical literature, the study identifies core conceptual dimensions relevant for reframing school wellbeing, such as relationality, community embeddedness, educational responsibility, participation and social justice. The analytical strategy follows a thematic and interpretative approach. Policy texts and theoretical sources are examined through a set of analytical categories derived from the social pedagogy framework, including: relational educational practices; institutional responsibility for wellbeing; family-school partnerships; community and welfare networks; and professional agency. This analytical process enables the identification of dominant assumptions, silences and tensions in current wellbeing-oriented educational discourses. The methodological choice of a conceptual and policy-oriented design is coherent with the aims of the paper, which does not seek to evaluate specific programmes or interventions, but to contribute to conceptual development and to critically examine the knowledge frameworks that inform educational practice and policymaking in the field of health and wellbeing education. This approach also allows for a reflective engagement with the politics of wellbeing education research, highlighting how certain forms of knowledge are privileged in policy arenas, while broader pedagogical and social perspectives remain marginal. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The expected outcomes of the study are primarily theoretical and conceptual, with relevant implications for policy and professional practice. First, the analysis is expected to demonstrate that dominant school wellbeing policies tend to rely on individualised and instrumental conceptions of wellbeing, insufficiently addressing the relational and institutional conditions that shape educational experience. Families and welfare services are often framed as external or auxiliary actors rather than as integral components of educational wellbeing systems. Second, the study is expected to show that a social pedagogy perspective offers a coherent and theoretically robust framework for reinterpreting school wellbeing as a collective educational responsibility, grounded in community relationships and institutional cooperation. In particular, the analysis highlights the central role of family–school relationships as educational spaces where vulnerability, trust, recognition and participation are negotiated. Third, the paper is expected to propose a conceptual model of school wellbeing based on integrated educational welfare governance, in which schools operate as relational and community-oriented institutions, embedded in local welfare ecosystems. This model emphasises professional agency, inter-professional collaboration and participatory practices as key conditions for sustainable wellbeing promotion. Overall, the contribution aims to strengthen the conceptual foundations of health and wellbeing education by explicitly linking school development, family engagement and welfare policies within a social pedagogical framework. It thereby responds to the challenges posed by contemporary poly-crisis contexts and supports the development of more socially responsive and educationally grounded wellbeing strategies in schools.
