Paper Comparing Teachers' And Students' Perspectives of Student Engagement in Higher Education: Between Performativity And Invisibility Universitat de Barcelona, Spain Presenting Author:Student engagement in higher education (HE) continues to be a matter of concern for universities and stakeholders as engaged students are less likely to drop out and are more inclined to engage in lifelong learning (Kuh, 2009). The institutional efforts to improve student engagement include teaching methods and depend on how teachers perceive their students (Almarghani & Mijatovic, 2017). Given that some student engagement may be invisible to the teacher (Gourlay, 2017; Padilla-Petry & Vadeboncoeur, 2020), and that students' perception of the subject and their own engagement may differ from that of the teachers’ (Zepke et al., 2014), few studies have compared teachers' views of student engagement with those of students' and little is known about an engagement that may go beyond a performativity (Macfarlane & Tomlinson, 2017b). Consequently, HE policies may be focusing on student engagement only as it is seen from the teachers or the institutions. Mainstream views of student engagement in HE reduce it to behaviours in classrooms organised by teachers and institutions and experienced by students. However, these mainstream views are deemed insufficient for some since they lack a "democratic-critical conception of learning that is participatory and dialogic" (Zepke, 2015, p.1317). Instead, student engagement in HE should be about adults making learning choices in post-compulsory education, thus avoiding an infantilization of HE students with compulsory attendance and emotional responses such as personal reflections on professional or experiential learning (Macfarlane & Tomlinson, 2017b). Student engagement has traditionally been associated with high-quality learning outcomes (Wimpenny & Savin-Baden, 2013) such as critical thinking (Carini et al., 2006), but some scholars are concerned with the relationship between alleged signs of student engagement (e.g., higher attendance), specific pedagogic interventions and learning gains (Macfarlane & Tomlinson, 2017a; 2017b). As an ideology that reifies the notion of participation (Gourlay, 2015), the concept of student engagement may serve to underscore notions of what is acceptable student behaviour. For instance, would engagement-as-opposition (engagement outside the norms, protesting etc.) be recognised as engagement (Macfarlane & Tomlinson, 2017b)? Several elements of what is considered legitimate engagement "focus on activity, which is communicative, recordable, public, observable and often communal" (Gourlay, 2015, p.404). The performativity associated with student engagement may not be directly related to learning and the conflation of student satisfaction and engagement may be illusory if the former is scarcely related to learning gains (Macfarlane & Tomlinson, 2017b). Thus, equating meaningful learning to largely behavioural measures may fail to capture the quality of learning generating a performativity in which targets and performance indicators must be met, students must be perceived as active learners and what is easily observable is measured (Macfarlane & Tomlinson, 2017b). Furthermore, some scholars highlight the invisibility or misinterpretation of certain forms of student engagement as some students may have an independent style of engagement and collaborate less with peers, while others seem to be passive (Gourlay, 2017). The invisibility of solitary forms of student engagement such as reading, writing or enquiring on the content of the subject outside the class may be ignored by teachers (Gourlay, 2017; Padilla-Petry & Vadeboncoeur, 2020) and students who prefer more solitary or independent learning may feel alienated and even vilified in classes where participation is mandatory (Tomlinson, 2017). But since what is understood as legitimate student engagement may vary according to teachers’ expectations and pedagogy (Gourlay, 2015) and reduced to task completion (Wintrup, 2017), more studies on the differences between HE students’ and teachers’ perspectives on student engagement and learning are needed to better inform HE policies on student engagement. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used We present the results of a mixed methods study that aimed to compare the views on student engagement in HE of teachers and students of Law, Education and Nursing from two Catalan public universities in the framework of blended teaching. The specific objectives of the research were: 1) to identify the degree of agreement/disagreement in relation to indicators of student engagement from the point of view of students and teachers; 2) to ascertain the students' and teachers' opinion on the visibility or invisibility of student engagement; 3) to compare the students' and teachers' opinions about and assessments of student engagement; 4) to explore how teachers and students understand learning in HE. The quantitative method comprised two ad hoc surveys, one for teachers and another for students, each consisting of three sections of questions: 1) socio-demographic data, 2) closed multiple-choice items, and 3) open-ended questions. The qualitative methods involved semistructured interviews with teachers and a student focus group. Participants consisted of teachers and students from Nursing, Law and Education degree programs which encompass subjects such as Pedagogy and Social Education. The surveys were distributed through the mailing lists of the respective faculties, ensuring anonymity and confidentiality with no collection of identifying data. The first section of each survey outlined the research objectives and sought informed consent from participants. Involvement in the study was voluntary, and no financial or academic incentives were offered. Forty-five teachers and 118 students from two universities completed the surveys. Twelve teachers were interviewed, with 6 from each university and 4 from each degree program. These participants, all full-time lecturers with more than 5 years of teaching experience, were recognized by their peers for actively implementing active learning methods. Notably, the majority were women (n=9). The focus group comprised 7 students from both participant universities, with 5 from Education degree programs and 2 from Law. Participants were chosen based on their active involvement in class discussions, with the majority being women (n=6). Quantitative analysis of agreement ratings for the survey items was conducted using SPSS software (version 25). Descriptive statistics (frequency, mean, standard deviation) were computed, alongside nonparametric tests for group comparison (Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis K, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test) (Hollander et al., 2014). Responses to the open-ended questions underwent qualitative content analysis using an inductive approach. The qualitative content analysis of both the semistructured interviews and the focus groups followed a mixed inductive-deductive approach. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Regarding the perception of student engagement, while both teachers and students agreed on the importance of attendance, seeking the best qualifications and commenting positively or critically on the subject, there were significant differences regarding class participation and non-compulsory activities and attitudes. Students were more critical of the association between participation and student engagement defending their right to engage through silent listening and keeping the webcam off in online classes. Most of the teachers and the students accepted the invisibility of student engagement, but the reasons for this acceptance varied considerably between them. The students confirmed the teachers' explanations (lack of participation, large groups, and online classes) for the invisibility of student engagement but complained about a possible lack of teacher involvement or objectivity in assessing student engagement. Some of the students' complaints appeared to be directed at teachers' lack of awareness of students' efforts and personal conditions. Regarding the performativity of student engagement, students attached importance to attentive and silent listening as an indicator of student engagement, which may reveal more tolerance of a less performative engagement. While most of the teachers trusted their evaluation methods as indicators of the students’ learning, the students largely related learning with being able to apply or use what they learn outside the class. Moreover, almost 20% of the teachers’ responses to the question about students’ learning associated learning with class attendance and participation. Both the teachers and students associated achieving good qualifications with student engagement. This association justifies fostering student engagement, but not the assumption that student engagement is necessarily lacking in students with lower grades. In fact, 23.9% of the students' responses on the invisibility of student engagement were complaints about the lack of visibility of the work involved in each course, and 14.8% complained that teachers looked at qualifications only. Paper Self-regulated Coping with Critical First-year Transition Requirements in Distance Education: A Qualitative Focus-group Study IU Internationale Hochschule, Germany Presenting Author:How students deal with academic demands is well researched in campus-based contexts. Work on self-regulated learning and on stress, appraisal and coping suggests that students actively plan, monitor and regulate cognition, behaviour and emotion in response to these demands (Zimmerman, 2008; Pintrich, 2004; Lazarus & Folkman, 1984; Panadero, 2017). Evidence also exists on self‑regulated learning strategies in online higher education (Broadbent & Poon, 2015). In distance education (DE), the transition into higher education is widely seen as critical for subsequent study success (Trautwein & Bosse, 2017) and is associated with multifaceted challenges such as getting used to and finding one’s way in distance learning, developing self-learning skills, balancing various commitments, and establishing and maintaining social contacts with peers, alongside limited student interaction (Brown et al., 2015; Schweighart et al., 2024; Trautwein et al., in preparation). While recent reviews synthesise interventions to strengthen self-regulated learning in first-year students (Simón‑Grábalos et al., 2025), we know less about which self-regulated coping strategies first-year DE students report assembling in response to critical transition requirements, and which institutional and sociomaterial conditions make these strategies workable. We conceptualise self‑regulated coping as students’ purposeful cognitive, behavioural, emotional and social regulation aimed at managing perceived transition requirements, uncertainty and constraints during the early period. While much research on the transition into distance education has focused on challenges and barriers, our focus goes beyond cataloguing challenges to tracing students’ agentic, coping strategies and the conditions that enable or hinder strategy use. Whereas prior work focuses on designed interventions to improve self‑regulated learning (Simón‑Grábalos et al., 2025), we examine the strategies students themselves assemble in situ. We address two questions: (RQ1) (RQ1) Which self‑regulated coping strategies do first‑year DE students report using to manage critical transition requirements? (RQ2) Which sociomaterial and institutional conditions (e.g., platform affordances, resource visibility, staff presence, peer infrastructures) enable or constrain these strategies? Data were collected through thirteen online focus groups at two German DE programmes (one public, one private) with 41 undergraduates (aged 19–55; most employed and/or with caring responsibilities). Transcripts were analysed inductively using qualitative content analysis (Kuckartz & Rädiker, 2022). The semi‑structured guide drew on TiDE evidence on transition challenges/requirements (Schweighart et al., 2024; Trautwein et al., in preparation). Coding centred on “requirement episodes” and linked (a) the requirement/challenge described, (b) the coping strategies students reported using, and (c) enabling or constraining conditions referenced. Preliminary analysis indicates four clusters of coping strategies. (1) Temporal structuring and workload design: pacing heuristics (‘one module per month’), micro-scheduling (‘one lesson per day’), time-blocking and exam-period prioritisation; they sequence modules strategically to sustain motivation. (2) Resource curation and self-help: systematically mine learning management system (LMS) FAQs, explainer videos and course discussion threads (e.g., in Microsoft Teams); attendance at synchronous learning sessions; personal knowledge bases; reliance on recordings when live attendance is infeasible. (3) Help-seeking and peer mobilisation: selecting responsive tutors, overcoming reluctance to ask questions, and leveraging small peer groups for explanation and motivation. (4) Emotion/load regulation and contingency management: workshops addressing overwhelm and motivation, deliberate pace adjustments, avoiding overload-inducing live events, deadline flexibility in bottlenecks, and—under acute strain—formal leave. Across clusters, students combine multiple strategies and often routinise them over time. Strategy workability appears conditional on the timely visibility of resources, prompt and personal staff responses, and accessible, low-threshold peer infrastructures. We present preliminary findings and derive provisional implications at course/programme, staff and policy levels, outlining where institutional design may strengthen students’ capacity for self-regulated coping in digitally mediated environments. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study used online qualitative focus groups to gather co-constructed accounts of how first-year distance education students handle the demands of entering higher education. Two German distance learning programmes (one public, one private) participated. Undergraduate students were purposively recruited between October 2024 and June 2025 via learning management system (LMS) announcements, Microsoft Teams channels and course spaces. To capture temporality, we ran ‘immersive’ groups with first and second-semester students and ‘retrospective’ groups with later-semester students reflecting on their first year. In total, 41 students took part across thirteen deliberately small groups (two to four participants) to support turn-taking and depth of discussion in the online format. Participants varied in age (19–55), employment (about 70% worked ≥11 hours/week) and caregiving (about 37%). Programmes were mainly in education and social sciences. Sessions (60–90 minutes) were conducted on Zoom, recorded with consent and transcribed verbatim. The semi-structured guide—developed with reference to a scoping review on the transition into distance education (Schweighart et al., 2024)—covered motivations, early experiences, study–work–life integration, digital study practices, academic and social integration, supports and barriers and coping. A dedicated coping module elicited concrete “requirements episodes” (“You mentioned several challenges. How did you deal with these?”) and probed enabling conditions and gaps (“Did you use institutional support—if so, which, if not, why not?”; “What remains unresolved?”; “What else would have helped?”). Two researchers attended each session (moderation; observation/technical support). Analysis followed qualitative content analysis (Kuckartz & Rädiker, 2022) with inductive category development. The unit of analysis was a requirement episode—any passage describing a perceived transition requirement/challenge and the associated coping strategies students reported using. We use the term coping strategies to refer to the cognitive, behavioural, emotional and social actions that students reported using to manage a perceived transition requirement. Through iterative coding, we derived TiDE-aligned transition requirement types (e.g., orientation and finding one’s way in distance learning; managing information and platform overload; balancing various commitments; developing self-learning/self-organisation skills; establishing and maintaining peer contacts; navigating study administration and technical problems; dealing with assessment feedback and exam logistics)and, for each episode, coded the strategies used (for example time-blocking, micro-scheduling, resource curation, peer micro-communities, help-seeking scripts, feedback use, emotion regulation, contingency management), tools and perceived outcomes. Emergent requirement types were grouped into higher-order families for reporting clarity. Ethical approval, informed consent, anonymisation and secure data storage were ensured. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Our emerging analysis suggests that coping with the critical demands of distance education in the first year is a situated, multilevel accomplishment rather than a fixed trait. Students assemble portfolios of strategies that can develop from ad hoc reactions into more routinised practices across four interlinked areas: temporal structuring, resource use and self-help, help-seeking and peer mobilisation, and emotion/load regulation including contingency management. These strategies appear agentic yet conditional. Their effectiveness seems to hinge on the timely visibility of institutional resources, prompt and personal staff responses, and accessible, low-threshold peer infrastructures. As the analysis is ongoing, findings are preliminary; full analysis will be completed in summer 2026.At programme and course level, principles include foregrounding early visibility and coherence of support, helping students recognise when and how to use of available resources, and offering opportunities for connection that do not undermine flexibility. For staff development, tentative priorities include equipping staff to signal presence in asynchronous settings, normalising help-seeking and notice indirect indicators of overload. From an equity perspective, a recurring concern is to reduce reliance on students’ preexisting social, academic or digital capital so that effective coping does not depend on prior advantage. Overall, persistence in distance education depends not only on access and flexibility but on whether students can enact effective self‑regulated coping early on. Paper Promoting Student Agency in Higher Education: Teachers’ Perspectives on Roles and Good Practices University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:The present study examines university teachers’ perceptions of practices facilitating student agency in course and degree programs contexts in Finnish higher education. Student agency is important for students’ learning and how they experience their learning environment (Stenalt & Lassesen 2022). There has been increased interest in the agency of higher education students in recent years (Torres Castro & Pineda-Báez 2023), but empirical research on fostering student agency in higher education is limited (see Stenalt & Lassesen, 2022). Student agency is commonly understood as students’ active participation and capacity to shape their own learning, encompassing the opportunities they have to influence their learning processes within social contexts (e.g., Bandura, 1999; Biesta & Tedder, 2007). The importance of student agency is also emphasized in international educational policy documents (e.g., OECD, 2019), thus affecting educational aspirations in European countries, including Finland.
Student agency is shaped by how individuals interact with their social and structural environments and by the resources available to them. Instead of viewing students only as rational, self-directing actors (Lee, 2024) it is important to understand that agency involves beliefs about personal efficacy, and experiences of relational and contextual resources available to them, which all contribute to students’ agentic actions (e.g., Jääskelä et al., 2023). From a social cognitive perspective, Bandura (1999) identifies beliefs about personal efficacy as central to agency, influencing people’s actions, expected outcomes, and their capacity for self‑regulation and reflection. Thus, student agency emerges through interactions between learners’ perceptions, social contexts, and the supports that enable meaningful action.
Research on student agency in higher education—particularly within teacher education—highlights the central role of social interaction, learning environments, and pedagogical practices in shaping how students experience and enact agency. Studies show that future teachers need opportunities to build their own sense of agency, as this supports their capacity to later foster pupils’ agency (e.g., Juutilainen et al., 2018). Opportunities for students to share ideas, negotiate roles, participate in discourse, and take authorial stances promote agency, whereas traditional teacher‑led practices may constrain it (e.g., Lipponen & Kumpulainen, 2011). Research on higher education pedagogy shows that agency-supportive environments, involving trust, co-construction of knowledge, and student‑centred pedagogies, enhance meaningful learning (e.g., Stenalt & Lassesen,2021). While co-creation of knowledge can enhance agency, it also poses challenges: student voices may not be equally heard, and authentic participation requires inclusive and safe environments (Simecek & Freeman, 2025). Ultimately, fostering student agency demands attention to institutional cultures, curriculum, and pedagogical approaches (Graham, 2025), involving integration of real-world learning experiences for students (Nieminen et al., 2025).
Although student agency is widely recognised as a central goal in higher education, there is limited empirical research on concrete ways to foster it. More evidence is needed across different disciplines and learning contexts. This qualitative study examines university teachers’ perceptions of how agency can be supported through course design and degree programme practices. The study aims to identify both agency‑supportive and agency‑hindering practices by analysing university teachers’ reflections. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study investigates university teachers’ perceptions of fostering student agency through a qualitative research design involving group reflection discussions and individual interviews. The data were collected at a research‑intensive Finnish university as part of a larger project on student agency. Participants included five experienced teachers from two bachelor’s degree programmes—natural sciences (n = 2) and educational sciences (n = 3). The disciplines were intentionally chosen for their contrasting characteristics. In total, the dataset consists of five group reflection discussions and three individual thematic interviews. Informed consent and anonymity procedures were carefully followed. The teachers collaborated with researchers over three years. To support reflection on their pedagogical practices, they received summary results from a student agency survey administered in their courses. The survey assessed students’ perceived agency resources, agentic intentions, and actions. Prior to data collection, teachers and researchers met three times to develop a shared understanding of student agency, informed by a conceptual model emphasizing students’ capabilities, relations, participation, and transformation. The group reflection discussions focused on course implementations, teachers’ observations of student agency, and perceived opportunities or challenges in supporting it. Although no structured question framework was imposed, researchers guided the conversations with introductory prompts and contributed theoretical insights. Each teacher led the discussion when their course was under review. The discussions lasted approximately 90 minutes and were transcribed verbatim. To deepen understanding of teachers’ views, semi‑structured thematic interviews were conducted. Interview themes included teachers’ conceptions of student agency, practices that support or hinder it, and the role of agency within degree programmes. Interviews lasted about one hour. The analysis combined thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) with narrative and positioning approaches (e.g., Bamberg & Georgakopoulou, 2008). Analysis began with repeated readings of the reflection transcripts to identify a variety of themes raised by the teachers, linked to central aspects of student agency, such as teacher–student interactions, roles, power dynamics, and trust. A narrative lens was employed to understand how teachers constructed meanings and roles through storytelling within the group interactions (Bamberg & Georgakopoulou, 2008). After the initial familiarisation, both discussion and interview data were coded in Atlas.ti 25, identifying key themes and subcategories that captured teachers’ perceptions and interpretations of fostering student agency. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings emphasise the teacher’s role as a facilitator who provides disciplinary knowledge, conceptual frameworks, and concrete examples to support students’ learning. Peer interaction and helping students find personal relevance in their studies were considered essential components of agency. Teachers highlighted the importance of being accessible both as experts and as supportive guides, requiring pedagogical approaches that are student centred and that create safe, just learning environments. However, simply inviting students to participate in teaching-learning situations is insufficient; teachers must intentionally cultivate safety, belonging, and meaningful opportunities for contribution. These findings echo student-ready critical care pedagogy (Collins-Warfield et al. 2025), which centres on autonomy, relational support, and creating supportive spaces, and normalising challenges students may face while learning. Teachers noted that structural constraints, such as limited resources, large lecture formats, and heavy workloads, shape their ability to implement ideal practices. Supporting agency therefore requires balancing pedagogical ideals with realistic working conditions. Participants stressed that individual guidance allowed them better opportunities to support students’ learning. Dialogical teaching and reflective tasks were seen to deepen engagement, support learning, and help teachers understand students’ progress. Such practices require both individual effort and institutional support. At the program level, shared pedagogical practices and a curriculum that explicitly acknowledges student agency were viewed as important for fostering agency progressively across studies. This aligns with calls for curricula that promote critical reflection, meaningful knowledge use, and student development as knowledgeable, active participants in society (see Graham, 2025; Nieminen et al., 2025). Overall, teachers saw themselves as facilitators supporting students’ active role in learning, while recognising that clearer conceptualisations of student agency could strengthen curriculum design and program level pedagogical development.
