Paper Investigating the Impacts of Complementing the Teaching Practice with Virtual Simulations on Pre-Service Teachers’ Sense of Self-Efficacy and Experiences Middle East Technical University, Turkey (Türkiye) Presenting Author:Across European teacher education systems, preparing pre-service teachers for increasingly complex, diverse, and technology-mediated classrooms has become a central concern. Although school-based practicum remains a cornerstone of initial teacher education, research has consistently shown that traditional practicum structures often provide uneven learning opportunities due to limited mentoring capacity, restricted exposure to diverse classroom scenarios, and insufficient opportunities for repeated instructional rehearsal (Darling-Hammond et al., 2002; Girod & Girod, 2008; Stronge et al., 2011). These limitations are particularly consequential for the development of teacher self-efficacy, a construct closely associated with instructional effectiveness, persistence, and professional resilience (Bandura, 1994; Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001). Grounded in Social Cognitive Theory, teacher self-efficacy develops primarily through mastery experiences, vicarious learning, social persuasion, and affective regulation (Bandura, 1977, 1994). However, conventional teaching practice often offers few low-risk opportunities for iterative practice and reflection, especially in contexts shaped by institutional constraints and crisis-related disruptions to schooling (Wilke, 2004). In response, simulation-based learning has gained increasing attention as a means of extending practicum experiences beyond the constraints of time, place, and school availability. Digital teaching simulations provide controlled environments in which pre-service teachers can rehearse instructional strategies, respond to student behaviour, and receive immediate feedback—conditions aligned with established sources of self-efficacy development (Dieker et al., 2014; Michael & Gilad, 2015). While international research indicates that simulations can positively contribute to pre-service teachers’ professional learning when integrated alongside authentic teaching experiences, findings remain mixed and highly dependent on program design (Gundel et al., 2019; Samuelsson et al., 2022; Schreiber, 2022). In particular, there is limited empirical guidance on the design conditions under which simulations function effectively as a complement to school-based practicum—such as coherence with practicum objectives, structured scaffolding, sustained engagement, and feedback mechanisms—rather than as a stand-alone or replacement activity (Bradley & Kendall, 2014). This gap is especially evident in European contexts such as Türkiye, where teacher education programs are navigating curricular reform, digitalisation, and the long-term effects of global and national crises (MoNE, 2018). Positioned within ECER’s focus on teacher education research, the present study examines simulation-enhanced teaching practice as a structured complement to practicum, with particular attention to its role in supporting pre-service teachers’ self-efficacy and informing evidence-based teacher education design. To this end, the study addresses the following research questions: 1. What are the impacts of complementing the teaching practice experience with a virtual simulation program on student teachers' sense of self-efficacy?
2. What are the underlying experiences of student teachers who participate in a traditional teaching practice course and who attend the traditional teaching practice course complemented with teaching simulation?
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study investigates the effects of complementing school-based teaching practice with an AI-supported virtual classroom simulation on pre-service EFL teachers’ self-efficacy and lived practicum experiences. Guided by a qualitative-dominant mixed-methods logic, the study addresses both measurable changes in self-efficacy and the processes through which such changes are constructed and interpreted by student teachers. The research questions focus on (a) whether self-efficacy changes over time, (b) whether changes differ between traditional and simulation-enhanced practicum conditions, and (c) how participants describe and explain their experiences across the two instructional contexts. Methodologically, the study adopts a qualitative-dominant, partially mixed, concurrent status mixed-methods design (QUAL → quan). Quantitative and qualitative data are collected during the same practicum period, analyzed separately to preserve methodological integrity, and integrated at the interpretation stage to generate explanatory meta-inferences. The study is situated in the English Language Teaching (ELT) Department at Middle East Technical University (METU) within the compulsory English Language Teaching Practicum II course. All participants complete standard practicum requirements regulated by institutional and national frameworks; the simulation component is designed to complement—not replace—school placements. Quantitative participants include 50 student teachers at pre-test (25 traditional; 25 simulation-enhanced), with 47 completing post-test measures (25 traditional; 22 simulation-enhanced). The sample is predominantly female (n=36), all Turkish, and largely in the 8th semester, with ages ranging from 22–25. Qualitative participants comprise a purposeful subsample of seven student teachers (4 simulation-enhanced; 3 traditional), selected for willingness and reflective capacity to provide in-depth accounts. The simulation-enhanced condition uses SimSchool, providing iterative, low-risk rehearsal through AI-driven student avatars, learner profiles, lesson plans, and automated feedback reports. Participants complete 202 sessions in total (minimum 8 modules; approximately 9 sessions per student), accumulating 119 hours of simulation engagement. Quantitative data are gathered with the Teacher Sense of Efficacy Scale (TSES; Tschannen-Moran & Woolfolk Hoy, 2001), using the Turkish adaptation (Çapa, 2005). Qualitative data are collected via expert-reviewed semi-structured interviews conducted pre-practicum and post-practicum (with group-specific forms). Quantitative analysis employs a 2 (Time: pre/post) × 2 (Group) mixed-design ANOVA with assumption checks. Qualitative analysis combines content analysis with reflexive thematic analysis, using a hybrid deductive–inductive coding strategy and an inter-rater agreement procedure to support analytic rigor. Ethical approval was obtained from METU’s Human Research Ethics Committee; confidentiality and voluntariness were ensured throughout. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes evidence to teacher education research by demonstrating that simulation-enhanced practicum can meaningfully shape pre-service EFL teachers’ self-efficacy trajectories, beyond what is observed in traditional school-based teaching practice alone. Quantitative findings from the mixed-design ANOVA indicate divergent change patterns across groups: while the simulation-enhanced group increased from pre- to post-test (M = 143.68 to 159.84), the traditional practicum group showed a marked decline (M = 146.32 to 97.84). The Time × Group interaction was large and statistically significant, F(1, 48) = 20.95, p < .001, partial η² = .304, indicating that change in self-efficacy differed substantially by instructional condition. A significant Group effect further supported higher overall self-efficacy for the simulation-enhanced condition, F(1, 48) = 16.50, p < .001, partial η² = .256. Importantly, these outcomes should be interpreted in relation to the design intensity and coherence of the intervention: the simulation-enhanced cohort engaged in sustained, iterative practice (202 sessions; 119 cumulative hours; minimum eight modules), allowing repeated cycles of rehearsal, feedback, and reflection aligned with practicum goals. The qualitative strand (seven purposively selected participants across both conditions) complements the statistical results by illuminating how self-efficacy was constructed in practice—through narrated experiences of planning, decision-making, classroom management, and engagement challenges, and by clarifying the affordances and constraints of simulated rehearsal alongside school placements. Overall, the findings support a programmatic implication relevant to teacher education: simulations appear most promising when implemented as a structured complement to practicum, with clear pedagogical alignment, scaffolding, feedback loops, and sufficient duration to enable learning across iterations. Paper Lesson Study as a Practice-Based Reform in Initial Teacher Education: Evidence from Kazakhstan 1: Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education, Kazakhstan; 2: National Centre for Professional Development 'Orleu', Kazakhstan; 3: Faculty of Education University of Cambridge, UK Presenting Author:This study forms part of a three-year institutional initiative aimed at integrating Lesson Study (LS) into an initial teacher education (ITE) university in Kazakhstan. Adopting an institutional case study design, the research examines (1) teacher educators’ and student-teachers’ perceptions of LS, (2) institutional practices supporting its implementation, and (3) implications for the sustainable institutionalisation of LS within ITE. Globally, the teaching profession is experiencing increasing complexity as a result of education reforms, accountability pressures, and demands for improved learning outcomes. Across European and international contexts, these challenges have prompted a re-examination of ITE programmes and a call for stronger practice-oriented, inquiry-based approaches that connect theory with authentic classroom experience (OECD, 2011; Darling-Hammond, 2014; Helgevold & Wilkins, 2020). However, international scholarship cautions against reducing practice-based education to technical apprenticeship models, which risk weakening teachers’ critical agency and professional learning capacity (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1999; Beauchamp, 2015; Fullan, 2016). Instead, practice-based inquiry is increasingly viewed as a means of rebalancing the theory–practice relationship in ITE while fostering reflective, research-informed professionalism (Willemse et al., 2015; Frost, 2006). Within this global shift, LS has gained prominence as a collaborative, inquiry-oriented model of teacher professional learning in ITE (Lamb & Aldous, 2016; Wood et al., 2019). Originating in Japan, LS has been widely adapted across Europe, Asia, and other regions to support teachers’ reflective practice, pedagogical reasoning, and professional dialogue (Cajkler & Wood, 2019; Schipper et al., 2020; Beckmann & Ehmke, 2023). The LS cycle typically involves goal setting, collaborative planning, observation of research lessons, structured reflection, and dissemination of learning (Dudley, 2014). International research demonstrates that LS enhances pre-service and in-service teachers’ pedagogical skills, content knowledge, and instructional decision-making (Cajkler & Wood, 2016; Coenders & Verhoef, 2019). For teacher educators, LS also provides a platform for modelling inquiry-based professional learning and reshaping traditional hierarchical relationships in ITE toward co-construction of knowledge (Lewis et al., 2009; Dudley, 2014). Consequently, LS has been conceptualised not only as a pedagogical strategy, but as an organisational and cultural innovation capable of addressing the persistent disconnection between university coursework and school practice. Despite this international interest, research on the institutionalisation of LS within ITE remains limited (Wood et al., 2019). European studies reveal that embedding LS requires attention to organisational conditions such as time allocation, scheduling, leadership support, and recognition of LS as legitimate professional learning (Schipper et al., 2020; Vermunt et al., 2019). UK research demonstrates that when LS is positioned as a structured and coherent element of ITE, it can strengthen university–school partnerships and deepen student-teachers’ pedagogical learning (Cajkler et al., 2013; Cajkler & Wood, 2016). However, international reviews caution that many LS initiatives remain fragmented and dependent on individual enthusiasm rather than systemic institutional commitment (Baumfield et al., 2022). These international insights are particularly relevant for Kazakhstan, whose teacher education system remains highly centralised and theory-oriented (Sarmurzin et al., 2021; Urkunova et al., 2025). In such contexts, institutionalising LS requires not only pedagogical adaptation but also structural and cultural transformation. Sustainability depends on how effectively LS is embedded within institutional policies, leadership practices, curriculum design, and professional norms (Ni Shuilleabhain & Bjuland, 2019; Wood & Cajkler, 2020). By situating the Kazakhstan case within European and international scholarship, this study contributes to global debates on how collaborative inquiry models can be adapted across diverse governance and policy environments. The findings offer insights into how LS can function as a bridge between global educational reforms and local institutional realities, and how ITE institutions in centralised systems can move toward more reflective, research-informed, and practice-connected models of teacher education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study examined the integration of Lesson Study (LS) within one initial teacher education (ITE) university, with the aims of exploring institutional implementation processes and assessing LS’s potential to transform ITE through practice-based research. The study was guided by three research questions: (1) how teacher educators and student-teachers perceive the role and value of LS; (2) how they experience its implementation; and (3) how they perceive opportunities and challenges related to institutionalising LS. An organisational case-study design was adopted to investigate LS integration within its real-life institutional context (Yin, 2014). The unit of analysis was the LS integration process rather than individual participants, enabling a holistic and process-oriented examination of organisational change. This approach was appropriate given the complexity and context-specific nature of LS implementation in ITE. Data were collected during Year 3 of LS integration, when the initiative had reached greater maturity. At this stage, structured mentoring, reflective online documentation, and collaborative project work were fully embedded, allowing for more informed and critical participant reflections. Multiple qualitative methods were used to ensure triangulation and credibility: open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and focus groups (Stake, 1995; Yin, 2014). Questionnaires captured participants’ perceptions, satisfaction, challenges, and views on LS’s transformative potential. Interviews provided in-depth insights into individual experiences, while focus groups explored collective perspectives and collaborative dynamics. The case university was selected through purposive sampling as a revelatory case of sustained LS implementation. Random sampling was used to select participants within the LS cohort. In total, 60 student-teachers and 27 teacher educators completed questionnaires. Semi-structured interviews involved 5 student-teachers and 14 faculty members, and focus groups included 5 student-teachers and 5 faculty members, representing diverse subject backgrounds. Data were analysed using iterative thematic analysis supported by MAXQDA software. Initial open coding generated 1,703 codes, which were refined through axial coding into thematic categories aligned with the research questions (Stake, 2013). Pattern matching and explanation building were employed to link empirical findings with theoretical propositions (Yin, 2014). Reliability was enhanced through triangulation, reflexivity, and separation of researcher roles. Ethical approval was obtained from the Nazarbayev University Institutional Research Ethics Committee. Informed consent, confidentiality, and voluntary participation were ensured in accordance with KERA ethical standards. Although findings are context-bound and analytically rather than statistically generalisable, the study provides valuable insights into the organisational dynamics that shape LS institutionalisation and sustainability within ITE. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings indicate that LS was perceived by both teacher educators and student-teachers as a significant shift from theory-dominated approaches toward practice-based, learner-centred inquiry. Word-frequency analysis confirmed this orientation, with “Lesson Study,” “research,” “practice,” and “professional development” dominating participants’ accounts, positioning LS as a research-informed model of professional learning rather than a procedural requirement (Cajkler & Wood, 2019; Dudley, 2015). First, LS was viewed as an effective response to the persistent theory–practice divide in ITE. Unlike traditional diploma projects, which were often described as compliance-driven and weakly connected to classroom realities, LS enabled sustained engagement with authentic teaching problems, direct observation of pupil learning, and iterative instructional refinement (Cochran-Smith & Lytle, 1999; Schipper et al., 2020). Participants also noted that LS promoted research authenticity and reduced plagiarism through reflective documentation and evidence-based inquiry . Second, implementation experiences were described as both challenging and developmental. Although students initially struggled with reflective writing and systematic analysis, LS strengthened their analytical thinking, instructional adaptation, and collaborative learning. The collaborative nature of LS reduced hierarchical boundaries and fostered shared inquiry, motivation, and agency, resulting in both academic and practical educational products (Cajkler & Wood, 2016; Vermunt et al., 2019). Finally, institutionalisation depended on structural conditions. Participants highlighted insufficient induction, uneven mentor preparation, and scheduling constraints as major barriers. They recommended earlier LS integration, clearer guidelines, stronger mentor training, and better alignment with partner schools (Schipper et al., 2020; Wood et al., 2019). Overall, LS demonstrates strong transformative potential for ITE in Kazakhstan, however, its sustainability requires coherent institutional alignment so that LS becomes an embedded organisational practice rather than an isolated capstone activity. Paper A Scoping Review of Practicum Experiences in Initial Teacher Education: A 15-Year Synthesis of Organisational Architectures Dublin City University, Ireland Presenting Author:Topic The ‘practicum experience’ is widely recognised internationally as a crucial part of initial teacher education (ITE) programmes (Aras, 2021, p.158) and in the formation of teachers more generally (Archambault et al., 2016). While practicum takes on various forms depending on the context, fundamentally it is the field-based, clinical aspect of ITE, characterised by direct engagement with learners, usually in schools (Bentley et al., 2017). Its putative purpose is to function as a bridge between education theory and professional classroom practice (Grudnoff and Williams, 2010). There is evidence to suggest that practicum experiences have evolved in recent times (Grudnoff, 2011), and the impact of the COVID-19 global pandemic as a catalyst in driving practicum experiences towards the online space cannot be underestimated (Moraru et al., 2024). This study utilises a scoping review spanning fifteen years to map the evolution of practicum architectures. It captures recent pandemic-mediated adaptations, without limiting the research focus to the disruption caused by the pandemic. To that end, this topic aligns strongly with the conference theme by mapping the organisational structures of ITE practicums to close the gap between knowing and acting on the evolving needs of student teachers (STs) and how ITE providers might respond to them via practicums. Aim and Research Question While various studies have examined isolated practicum structures, this scoping review aimed to map and consolidate existing evidence to provide a comprehensive taxonomy of how these clinical experiences are organised. The overarching research question was:
Through addressing this question, the intention was also to identify thematic gaps in relation to the organisational features of practicum that would signpost areas for more targeted systematic reviews thereafter. Conceptual Framework The study employed Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) widely-used framework for scoping reviews, as the overarching heuristic device guiding the structure of the research. This approach was adopted because of its well-established utility for providing a preliminary overview of the research available on given topics and for mapping key concepts / gaps (Grant and Booth, 2009). It also accommodated the inclusion of a more diverse evidence base (e.g. quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies) to support a comprehensive landscape analysis - although some limiters were employed as part of the exclusion criteria to enhance rigour (e.g. only empirical peer-reviewed studies were considered). The framework incorporated five stages (Arksey and O’Malley, 2005, p.22):
The framework was supplemented by The PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) (Tricco et al., 2018) to ensure that the methodological elements of the search, screening and reporting were robust - this is overviewed in detail in the Methods section below. While the search was not bounded by a settled conceptual or theoretical framework for how practicum was or should be organised (this was to ensure that the mapping of practicum concepts remained inductive and uninfluenced by predetermined constraints), some preliminary hypotheses were established to focus the review. For example, it was assumed that practicum experiences typically took place in physical school buildings but that this approach had likely evolved in response to the COVID-19 global pandemic. Similarly, it was assumed that an online component may form part of more recent practicum experiences or that there were some other technological elements to how practicum was organised. The methodological approach was designed to address these key issues and surface tensions that may have existed in relation to organisational considerations. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The PRISMA-ScR was used to structure the literature search, across nine research databases widely used in education research. To ensure an exhaustive retrieval of relevant studies, the project adhered to a documented search strategy. This involved the application of Boolean search strings tailored to each database’s syntax. Both Zotero and Covidence were used throughout the search, screening and selection processes. Thorough inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. For example, studies before 2009 were excluded, in favour of the fifteen-year window from then up to 2024. Only peer-reviewed, empirical studies were eligible for inclusion The application of the search string across databases produced five-hundred and seventy-one (n=571) articles. Following deduplication four-hundred and seven (n=407) articles were removed, leaving one-hundred and sixty-four (n=164) articles for title and abstract review. The high deduplication rate here can be attributed to the higher-than-usual number of databases consulted for the review. Following the removal of a further one-hundred and seven (n=107) articles during the title and abstract screening phase, fifty-seven (n=57) articles remained for full-text review. A further twenty-six (n=26) articles were removed after this, leaving thirty-one (n=31) eligible studies. To ensure exhaustiveness, a supplementary, single-pass, backward citation search of the reference lists of these eligible studies was undertaken and this produced a further four studies (n=4) that met the inclusion criteria. This resulted in a final article yield for review of thirty-five (n=35). Rigorous protocols were implemented throughout to ensure reproducibility, consistency and transparency. First, all three authors were involved in devising the research question and subsequent search string - this was subject to trials before being calibrated and finalised. Second, a pilot was undertaken by all three authors on 10% (n=17) of the initial set of deduplicated articles (n=164) for title and abstract review. This pilot determined the effectiveness of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and refinements were made thereafter. For each stage of the screening process, all articles were reviewed separately by the first and third author. Where there was an inclusion/exclusion discrepancy, this was resolved first by discussion and then by consultation with the second author. The interrater reliability between the first and third author was calculated at 86%, with a Cohen’s Kappa of K=0.69 (well within the range of 0.61-0.80 for substantial agreement). The analytical procedure incorporated descriptive charting and thematic synthesis. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The research findings reveal key insights on practicum experiences in ITE and where the preponderance of data concerning the organisational elements emanates from. Almost half of the studies (n=16) were undertaken in the United States of America, with a much smaller proportion undertaken in Europe (n=6). This highlights a significant research deficit on the organisational logics of European ITE practicum experiences and positions this review as an important resource in mapping the potential for future development on the continent. The review identified ten organisational approaches to practicum, undertaken across three different spaces (1. traditional, in-school setting; 2. online setting; 3. emergent, hybrid setting). Nine overarching practicum pedagogies were identified and four supervision models extrapolated. A five-category, structural typology of possible practicum options was deduced from the data, which can be granularised further depending on the organisational approaches, pedagogies and supervision models employed by ITE providers. The results show that the processes for assessing STs on practicum encapsulate a number of different avenues, including the use of observation, checklists, rubrics, submission of portfolios / artefacts / reflective journals, the completion of surveys / questionnaires and the creation of presentations. However, it is notable that many of the studies did not indicate whether STs were assessed and even where there was positive indication of assessment, details on the grading scheme (e.g. binary pass / fail or multi-level categorical grading) were sparse. While COVID-19 accelerated a move to online practicum approaches, this rapid pandemic shift has yet to evolve into a refined, deliberate e-practicum model. This research will appeal to delegates involved with the design of practicum experiences in ITE. It aligns with the conference theme by providing signposts for future research on how clinical experiences in teacher education could evolve, to meet changing conditions and priorities for new teachers, in post-pandemic Europe. Paper Experiences with Practicum as Integrated Part of a five-year Physical Education Teacher Education Master Program. University of South-Eastern Norway Presenting Author:There is an ongoing international trend to reform teacher education (Wang et al., 2010). Although the reforms have similarities, there are also clear differences between different countries and contexts (Darling-Hammond & Lieberman, 2013). In Europe, teacher training reforms can be seen in the light of the Bologna process, which contributed to the standardization of higher education (Borgen & Prøitz, 2023). Bologna process thus included structural convergence and dissolution of the binary higher education system which was the traditional structure in many of the EU countries (Evetts, 2013; Fägerlind & Strömqvist, 2004). The Norwegian university sector has been special, in that there traditionally has been flexibility with regard to opportunities to combine different teacher education cultures. Especially school subjects without a traditional "mother" discipline at the university, such as physical education (PE), have had multiple paths to becoming certified as a teacher. These traits have been reinforced through system changes that have taken place from 2000 onwards, including the introduction of master’s degrees in all teacher education programs in Norway from 2017. Teacher education in Norway is regulated by national framework plans amended by the government. The teacher education programme plans at the higher education institutions are formally required to build on these national framework regulations. The framework plan for five-year teacher training in PE and other school subjects categorised as “practical and aesthetic” subjects was established in 2020 and introduced gradually at universities from 2022. PE is among the practical aesthetic school subject (PAS) together with arts and crafts, music, and food and health school subjects. Practicum is an integral part of the study program throughout all five years. Yet, in the fifth year, students will complete a master's thesis and can choose institutional context for their practicum. The practicum in teacher education is often seen as a context where student teachers can explore the theory-practice relationship under guidance from practice teachers and teacher educators (Ball, 2000; Standal et al., 2014). Physical education teacher education (PETE) is often practiced based on certain traditions of what it means to be a "good" teacher and keeping students active rather than to further develop their learning, movement skills and reflection (Annerstedt, 2008; Hodge et al., 2003; Standal et al., 2013; Quennerstedt, 2019). Teacher educators are reported to view learning to teach PE as a practical process revolving around the teaching and coaching of sports skills, thus, to a small extent engaged in the students' development as reflexive practitioners in school (Mordal-Moen & Green, 2014). We currently know little about how PE is taught in teacher education and how student teachers develop their professional role in interaction with practicum (Gulliksen & Hjardemaal, 2011). The study explores how practicum is experienced and enacted as an integrated part of the PETE programme. Building on student teachers’ and teacher educators’ experiences from eight semesters, the study addresses the following research questions: How do student teachers’ four years with practicum experiences within a five-year PETE program contribute to their professional development as physical education teachers? To analyse and understand how practicum is integrated in teacher educators’ teaching within PETE, the study draws on social practice theory (Reckwitz, 2002) and, more specifically, the theory of practice architectures (Kemmis et al., 2014; Kemmis, 2022). From this perspective, educational practices are understood as socially organised and historically formed arrangements constituted through sayings, doings, and relatings, and enabled and constrained by cultural-discursive, material-economic, and social-political conditions. This framework provides an analytical lens for examining practicum not merely as an individual learning activity, but as part of an ecological whole that connects teacher educators’ practices with student teachers’ experiences and professional development. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopts a qualitative and participatory research design, using a workshop-based approach to explore experiences with practicum in the LUPE programme. Workshops are well suited for research that seeks to generate knowledge through dialogue and shared reflection, as they allow participants to negotiate meanings collaboratively and articulate experiences that may otherwise remain implicit (Ørngreen & Levinsen, 2017). The workshops brought together student teachers, teacher educators, and practicum teachers to create a shared space for discussing how practicum is integrated into the five-year PETE master programme. Rather than treating participants as individual data sources, the workshops were designed as a collective inquiry into practicum as a shared educational practice. This approach aligns with the study’s theoretical interest in practices as relational and socially organised phenomena. The workshops were inspired by the future workshop tradition, which invites participants to imagine desirable future situations, analyse current practices, and explore ways of moving from present conditions towards preferred ones (Vidal, 2005). This structure supported both critical reflection and constructive dialogue about practicum in PETE, and made it possible to identify tensions, possibilities, and constraints within the programme. Workshops were conducted in autumn 2022, spring 2023, spring 2025 and spring 2026. The workshops lasted approximately three hours and alternated between small-group work and plenary discussions. Participants engaged in brainstorming, reflection, and dialogue around four themes related to practicum and professional development in physical education teacher education. The workshop focused on different themes regarding how practicum was combined to learning. The workshop format was deliberately inclusive, and all participants’ experiences and perspectives were treated as equally important. Participants included student teachers enrolled in the five-year PETE in 2022 - 2027 and teacher educators involved in the programme. Participants were divided into mixed groups consisting of both student teachers and teacher educators. The researcher facilitated the workshops, participated in group discussions, and led the plenary sessions. During group work, participants wrote keywords, statements, and reflections on sticky notes, which were organised thematically and collected by the researcher. These notes, together with notes from plenary discussions, constituted the primary empirical material. The analysis focused on identifying patterns, variations, and breaks in how practicum was experienced and discussed. Drawing on the theory of practice architectures, particular attention was paid to how language, actions, and relationships were described, and to how these were enabled or constrained by institutional and organisational conditions. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Based on an initial and exploratory reading of the workshop material, the programme appears to offer student teachers meaningful opportunities to develop as physical education teachers. Our preliminary analysis suggests that practicum is experienced in different ways across contexts, and that these differences matter for how student teachers understand teaching, learning, and their emerging professional role. Rather than pointing to one shared practicum experience, the material suggests that student teachers encounter practicum in different ways across contexts. These experiences seem to contribute to engagement, movement joy, and reflection, while also highlighting tensions related to time constraints and the balance between different educational aims. Experiences from school-based contexts, including visits to schools and practicum periods, appear to deepen students’ understanding of the realities of teaching. Here, the material points to growing awareness of classroom management, relationships with pupils, learner diversity, and the challenge of adapting teaching to concrete situations. Students also describe uncertainty, mismatches between expectations and practice, and questions related to roles and responsibilities in school settings. Across practicum contexts, professional development appears to be closely linked to participation in school life and interaction with others. Being part of a professional community is described as both meaningful and demanding, highlighting the importance of relationships, opportunities for reflection, and support. The different contexts also challenge and develop the student’s professional language. It seems that the student move toward an enriched didactical and pedagogical language about their role as teachers and mentors in PE. However, it is depended on the structure of the practicum and the communication between mentors in practice schools, students and teacher educators. Overall, the preliminary findings suggest that student teachers’ professional development during this four-year period is shaped through participation in multiple practices, and that practicum plays an important, but varied, role in this process.
