Poster PopTheory-Lab: Developing Didactic Design Principles for Interdisciplinary Popular Music Education Leuphana Universität Lüneburg, Germany Presenting Author:The conditions of musical socialization and subjectivication (Gebhard, 2023) have shifted dramatically in the digital age. According to recent JIM-Study in Germany (“Youth, Information, Media”; MPFS, 2025), listening to music plays a central role for 93% of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19. Especially popular music genres are favored by this age group (MIZ, 2025). Furthermore, students are constantly exposed to commercial mechanisms, influencers, and algorithmic curation through streaming platforms and social media (Hornberger, 2017), popular music and its cultural environments serve as crucial resources for identity formation and social cohesion (Schneider-Binkl, 2025). However, the educational response to these changing conditions remains inadequate. While popular music in schools is mostly taught in the context of practical musicking, the theoretical and sociological dimensions of everyday environments explored in interdisciplinary Popular Music Studies rarely find their way into the classroom (Buchborn et al., 2021; Terhag, 2010). At the same time, the European Art Music remains the hegemonial basis of the German music education system (Buchborn et al., 2021). Consequently, a gap persists: expansive academic knowledge about popular music cultures (‘knowing’) exists but is seldom translated into lesson content that fosters critical reflection in students (‘acting’). Hence, this study aims to develop didactic design principles for popular music lessons in German secondary schools, to promote a reflexive approach to popular music cultures through the integration of interdisciplinary popular music discourses. This dissertational research project is thus grounded in the intersection of interdisciplinary Popular Music Studies and Popular Music Education. It posits that (popular) musical practice should be complemented by a reflexive engagement and analysis of its influences on societal developments to foster critical agency. The theoretical framework draws on concepts of cultural capital and identity formation, aiming for an understanding of the mechanisms of the music industry and media representation as a prerequisite for democratic participation in a mediatized society. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used To navigate the tension between theory and practice, the project utilizes a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach (Bakker, 2019; McKenney & Reeves, 2019) wherein the "Pop Theory-Lab" functions as an intervention space where teachable units are developed, tested and optimized by music teachers across Germany. This study is structured in two iterative DBR-cycles of design, implementation, analysis, and optimization, ensuring that the resulting design principles are both theoretically sound and applicable to music classrooms (Euler, 2017). In the first cycle of the PopTheory-Lab, five German lower secondary school music teachers were tasked with developing instructional units based on academic texts from interdisciplinary Popular Music discourses. The teaching materials covered the representation of gender stereotypes in German Rap Music as well as the analysis of students’ favorite music combined with the exploration of short video formats. The materials were tested in four classrooms across Germany and reflected in depth by the teachers. The data collection strategy is multi-perspectival, designed to capture the complexity of the translation and implementation processes and the effectiveness of the intervention. To analyze the teacher perspective, the study utilizes semi-structured pre- and post-interviews alongside a quantitative analysis of initial assessments of available teaching resources. This combination allows for a reconstruction of how teachers select, reduce, and adapt the teaching materials for this study and identifies the institutional and pedagogical barriers they encounter. Simultaneously, the student perspective is captured through post-questionnaires and randomized follow-up interviews. These instruments measure students’ assessment of music classes, their interest in socio-cultural topics, and the degree of reflexive engagement triggered by the intervention. In line with the objectives of DBR, findings from this first cycle are currently being used in the second cycle to optimize the lesson materials. In this phase, a new cohort of teachers revises and adapts the materials based on the initial empirical feedback. The Interviews are analyzed using Qualitative Content Analysis (Kuckartz & Rädiker, 2024) to identify patterns and challenges in didactic translation processes as well as reviews on student reflections. Quantitative survey data is analyzed descriptively to assess feedback on available teaching resources and teachers’ needs for the implementation of socio-cultural aspects of popular music, as well as students’ motivation and lesson reviews. This process allows for the development of design principles that help teachers guide students from passive consumption toward a critical understanding of the socio-economic structures influencing their music preferences. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The preliminary results from the first research cycle reveal a distinct tension between theoretical aspirations and practical implementation. Initial data analysis indicates that while teachers successfully identify relevant academic knowledge, they face significant challenges in the transformation process without oversimplifying the content or losing student engagement. Teachers report hurdles regarding time resources and the lack of existing didactic models for such theoretical approaches. However, on the student side, emerging patterns suggest a high potential for this approach. Contrary to the common belief that students prefer only practical music-making, the preliminary survey data shows a strong interest in understanding the influences and implicit as well as explicit messages of their favorite music. Teachers reported situations that indicated how the interventions prompted students to question their own consumption habits. These early findings suggest that the intervention successfully initiates processes of self-reflection and supports the development of critical agency. The expected outcome of this ongoing research is a catalogue of empirically grounded didactic design principles. These principles will indicate implications for popular music education that primarily focus on the translation processes for socio-cultural popular music education as well as the fostering of students’ (self-) reflection and reflexivity. Ultimately, the project aims to demonstrate that the critical interaction with popular music in schools can be a vital tool for democracy education, enabling teachers to act confidently in a changing cultural landscape and empowering students to become conscious participants in their musical culture. Poster New Genre Arctic Education in Nordic Countries: Results of Art-Based Action Research University of Lapland, Faculty of Art and Design, Finland Presenting Author:Until the late twentieth century, artists and art educators working in the European Arctic were predominantly trained in southern urban centres, where artistic education was grounded in Western art canons and Enlightenment-based epistemologies. As a result, artistic representations of the Arctic and related educational practices were often shaped by an external gaze that positioned the North as peripheral and culturally deficient. While such practices increased visibility and awareness of Arctic regions, they also reinforced colonial power relations and generated tensions between dominant national cultures and regional or Indigenous communities. Since the 1990s, Arctic art has increasingly been understood as a contemporary and situated field of practice that engages with present-day Arctic realities, ecological systems, and nature–culture relations. This shift aligns with broader decolonial perspectives that critically examine the role of art education in either sustaining or challenging colonial structures. This poster draws on decolonial theory, eco-cultural perspectives, and the principle of two-eyed seeing to frame Arctic art education as a relational, place-based, and epistemologically plural field. The concept of eco-cultural intra-action is used to emphasise the agency of land, materials, and more-than-human actors in learning processes, challenging human-centred and canon-driven approaches to art education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This poster presents findings from art-based action research aimed at developing Arctic art education, with a focus on northern Finland, Norway, and Greenland. It draws on empirical insights from long-term involvement in Arctic art education research and development projects conducted in both formal and informal educational settings. The research examines artistic interventions, pedagogical models, educational programmes, and institutional collaborations, analysing how these negotiate relationships between Western art education traditions, Indigenous knowledge systems, and local ecocultural contexts. Data sources include documentation of art-based practices, reflective materials, and collaborative research processes within community-based and educational environments. ________________________________________ Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The analysis highlights persistent tensions between Euro-American fine art education canons and the diverse ecocultures of the Arctic, both Indigenous and non-Indigenous. At the same time, the findings indicate a gradual shift toward more situated, relational, and decolonising approaches to art education in Arctic regions. This transformation has been supported by the establishment of art and art education programmes in northern universities, as well as by transnational collaboration through networks such as the University of the Arctic’s Arctic Sustainable Arts and Design (ASAD) network. The poster introduces New Genre Arctic Art Education as a framework that reframes art education as an ecocultural and relational practice. Rather than positioning knowledge as flowing from South to North or from expert to learner, this approach understands learning as emerging from entangled relationships among learners, educators, materials, places, and cultural contexts. By integrating Indigenous and Western ways of knowing through principles such as two-eyed seeing, and by recognising land and more-than-human actors as co-educators, Arctic art education is positioned as a key contributor to culturally sustainable, inclusive, and context-sensitive educational futures in the European Arctic. This approach is particularly relevant in countries such as Kazakhstan, where the need to strengthen domestic production and prepare a competitive workforce remains a national priority. As the global labor market increasingly values creativity, adaptability, and technical competence, schools are expected to equip students with practical skills that align with future professional demands [5]. One of the significant challenges observed in upper secondary education is students’ limited ability to transform creative ideas into production-ready outcomes. Although learners often demonstrate originality and innovation in project-based tasks, they frequently lack the skills required to prepare the necessary technical and graphic documentation that supports the production process. This issue becomes especially apparent in elective subjects related to design, graphics, and technology, where creativity must be complemented by structured technical knowledge [2]. The updated curriculum in Kazakhstan emphasizes interdisciplinary learning and competency-based education, highlighting the importance of vocational orientation, creativity, and functional literacy [7]. Within this framework, subjects such as “Graphics and Design” play a critical role in developing students’ professional awareness and life skills. However, classroom observations and assessment results indicate that students tend to focus primarily on the aesthetic or conceptual aspects of their projects while neglecting standardization requirements, specification documents, and technical regulations. As a result, their work often remains at the idea stage rather than progressing toward real-world application [4]. This gap between creative thinking and technical execution presents a pedagogical challenge for teachers. In particular, students struggle to understand the role of standardization, unification, and interchangeability in ensuring product quality, safety, and efficiency. According to educational researchers, meaningful learning occurs when students are guided to connect abstract concepts with practical application through structured instructional support [3][10]. These difficulties suggest the need for targeted instructional strategies that integrate creativity with technical competence through differentiated and practice-oriented learning. Action research provides a suitable framework for addressing such classroom-based challenges, as it allows teachers to systematically investigate their own practice, implement changes, and evaluate their impact on student learning [1][4]. By engaging in collaborative inquiry with colleagues, teachers can identify underlying problems, test innovative teaching approaches, and refine instructional strategies in response to observed outcomes. Moreover, action research supports professional development by fostering reflective practice and evidence-based decision-making [6]. This study was conducted as an action research project in a Grade 11 elective course, “Graphics and Design,” focusing on the topic “Standardization. Products, Parts, and Their Elements.” The research aimed to explore how teaching students to complete technical documentation—such as specification forms—could enhance their vocational knowledge and support the transition from creative ideas to production-oriented outputs. The study also sought to examine the effectiveness of differentiated instruction, role-based group work, and the integration of digital tools, including ChatGPT, in supporting students’ understanding of technical concepts [9]. The central research question guiding this action research was: How can teaching technical documentation through differentiated and creative instructional strategies improve students’ vocational knowledge and readiness for production-oriented tasks? By addressing this question, the study contributes to the growing body of research on vocational education, creativity, and technology-enhanced learning. It also offers practical insights for teachers seeking to balance creativity and standardization in design-related subjects, particularly within the context of upper secondary education [5][7]. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study employed an action research methodology, which is characterized by a cyclical process of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Action research was selected as the most appropriate approach because it allows teachers to investigate real classroom issues, implement targeted interventions, and evaluate their effectiveness within an authentic educational setting. Research Context and Participants The research was conducted in a Grade 11 elective class studying “Graphics and Design” at a secondary school. The participants included students with varying academic abilities and learning needs. To address these differences, students were pre-grouped into three differentiated levels (A, B, and C) based on prior performance, learning pace, and demonstrated skills. In addition, several subject teachers participated as observers and critical friends during the lesson study process. Research Design and Intervention During the planning stage, the research team identified students’ difficulty in completing technical documentation as the core problem. A lesson was designed around the topic “Standardization. Products, Parts, and Their Elements,” with a focus on teaching students how to complete specification documents in accordance with established standards. The intervention included: • Role-based group work, where students assumed the roles of “manufacturer,” “state,” and “consumer” to explore standardization from different perspectives; • Differentiated tasks, involving assembly drawings of varying complexity; • Use of ChatGPT, allowing students to independently research and clarify key concepts such as standardization, unification, and interchangeability; • Collaborative methods, including brainstorming and the Jigsaw strategy, to promote discussion and shared problem-solving. Data Collection Data were collected through multiple qualitative methods: • classroom observations conducted by the teacher and colleagues; • analysis of student work, particularly completed specification documents; • peer assessment using predefined descriptors; • student feedback gathered through reflective activities, including a reflection pyramid. Data Analysis The collected data were analyzed through reflective comparison of planned and actual lesson outcomes. Student engagement, task completion quality, and collaboration patterns were examined to identify strengths and areas for improvement. Feedback from observing teachers was used to triangulate findings and enhance the validity of the analysis. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings of this action research indicate that integrating technical documentation instruction into creative subjects can significantly enhance students’ vocational knowledge and practical readiness. By combining differentiated instruction, role-based learning, and collaborative strategies, students were able to develop a deeper understanding of standardization and its relevance to real-world production processes. The use of ChatGPT proved particularly effective in supporting students’ independent learning and conceptual understanding. It enabled learners to access information quickly, clarify terminology, and engage more confidently in group discussions. This demonstrates the potential of digital tools to complement traditional teaching methods when used purposefully and critically. However, the study also revealed challenges related to time management and group dynamics, particularly among mid-level learners. These issues highlight the importance of careful lesson pacing, interactive theoretical explanations, and thoughtful group composition. Future lessons should incorporate more visual and activity-based explanations to sustain student attention and ensure equitable participation. Overall, this action research underscores the value of reflective teaching practice and collaborative inquiry. By systematically examining classroom challenges and testing targeted interventions, teachers can improve instructional effectiveness and better support students’ transition from creative thinking to vocational competence. Poster Aesthetic Autonomy as a Compound: Object-Oriented Ontology and the Teshima Art Museum DNUE, South Korea, Korea, Republic of (South Korea) Presenting Author:Today, as we create art together with a nonhuman agent called artificial intelligence, the ontology of art is once again being put into question. At the same time, the superficial and short-lived stimuli offered by a technological condition in which the digital has become fully foregrounded seem, paradoxically, to call for a return to a more classical model of arts education—one that seeks liberation from machines and the recovery of direct contact with (natural) materiality. To explore the possibility of an arts education theory that can traverse—and encompass—these two diagnoses and perspectives that appear to conflict, this study places at its center the Object-Oriented Ontology of the new materialist philosopher Graham Harman (1961–). Harman provides a conceptual framework for understanding artistic practices in the AI era that cannot be captured by the human–world binary, while continuing to insist on art’s distinctiveness and autonomy. Harman (2020) ultimately argues for the aesthetic autonomy of the compound entity formed by things—including artworks—and their beholders. He overturns a modern worldview in which the world is meaningful because humans perceive it and confer meaning upon it, and he recognizes not only beings beyond the reach of human sensation but also the relations that obtain among those beings. In doing so, he seeks to capture honestly the character of art as a practice of treating the things of the world more justly. From this perspective, Harman’s discussion appears capable of offering a persuasive concept of art and an aesthetic theory through which one can speak of art’s educational significance on the new horizon opened by human–nonhuman relations. This claim seems educationally compelling in two main respects. First, it concerns the question of how to treat objects more justly. Art and arts education have often been justified as sensuous humanistic education that restores humanity or as civic education that expands social and public values. Yet, despite their differences, these accounts commonly retain an anthropocentric stance toward objects and environments. Does treating things justly, then, mean abandoning the human perspective altogether? That would be nearly impossible. Harman proposes a third approach. By carefully differentiating human modes of relating to objects, he rejects the reduction of things to their components, functions, or effects—as if explanatory knowledge were equivalent to the thing itself. Instead, he emphasizes a cognitive form without knowledge, in which one attempts to feel sensuously the quality of the real object (Real-Object) that cannot be exhausted by conceptual grasp. (Harman, 2020: 28) Second, Harman rearticulates art’s autonomy by discussing art as ontology beyond the sphere of human action alone. For him, autonomy does not reside in the artwork as an isolated entity; it emerges when artwork and beholder form a hybrid situation. This is a moment of ontological encounter in which an object is neither instrumentalized nor merely represented. It opens not through what is already known or explained about the thing, but through an effort to register its qualitative force directly. Harman describes such moments as experiences of beauty, understood as an explicit tension between a withdrawn real object and its vivid sensuous qualities. (Harman, 2020: 22, 97) Finally, this study takes the Teshima Art Museum in Japan as a case that exemplifies aesthetic autonomy as a human–object compound. Analyzing this experience from Harman’s ontology of art, the study clarifies the educational meaning of (1) form that exceeds human subjectivity and (2) the importance of fragmentary depth against digitally accelerated perception. In doing so, it aims to articulate arts education not only as a modern pedagogical contribution but also as an ontological practice of forming a more just relationship with things. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used 1. Argumentation through literature analysis By applying Graham Harman’s argumentative structure—one that places aesthetics as first philosophy—to the educational domain, this study aims to derive theoretical principles for how arts education can enact the core ontological claim that there are beings that exist independently of humans. For example, whether the object in question is a digital device or a physical book, the existential sense of co-existing with other beings arises not when we are separated from things, but when we combine with things to become a new hybrid and, as this new object, acquire a certain autonomy. To develop this argument, the study analyzes how Harman differentiates his position from Martin Heidegger, who also speaks of art’s educational meaning in ontological terms, and from Immanuel Kant, who treats form as something that can be grasped only within human subjectivity. Through this line of reasoning, the study seeks to translate and clarify—in educational language—the meaning of such autonomy as a newly formed compound. Ultimately, it aims to formalize (arts) educational principles capable of cultivating a sense of existence within educational timespaces where nonhuman entities operate in ways different from before. 2. Illustrating abstract concepts through a case Since Harman’s work is commonly classified within speculative realism, the development of this study—aimed at proposing its meaning for arts education—requires the task of concretely exemplifying abstract concepts through an appropriate case. For this purpose, the study takes the case of the Teshima Art Museum on Japan’s Teshima Island and will describe how an experience of beauty—an experience of autonomy as a compound of human and artwork—can be presented. The museum appears to exemplify particularly well such autonomy as a compound. Through this case, the study will illustratively elucidate the meaning of a new form in Harman’s sense that exceeds the subjective dimension of the human, the characteristics of the conditions under which aesthetic experience can be possible even without an artwork, and the meaning and importance of fragmentary depth. It will then clarify what educational implications this has beyond the modern contributions typically attributed to arts education—namely, what it means for arts education to function as an ontology of forming a just relationship with things. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings First, this study explains the experience at the Teshima Art Museum through Harman’s theory as an instance of aesthetic autonomy achieved as a compound. The museum’s curatorial design and formal configuration symbolically and almost perfectly realize the idea that the beholder’s participation is a principal component of art. For this reason, it offers a particularly apt example for showing how aesthetic autonomy does not arise from a modern mode of judgment that separates beholder and object, but rather from their coupling—how the beholder and the object, as a compound, can possess autonomy. Second, the study will clarify how its account of art’s educational meaning differs from earlier approaches that sought the value of art outside aesthetic experience. Harman tends to regard much conceptual and political contemporary art as appealing to values external to art itself (Harman, 2020: 403). Interpreting this claim educationally is significant for the present discussion. It suggests that arguing for the value of arts education under the banner of civic education or humanistic education risks appealing to something “outside” art; instead, it reminds us that we should press more carefully and precisely into what occurs within art, namely the experience of the feeling of beauty. Finally, this study proposes the educational implications of Object-Oriented Ontology as the cultivation of a desire to sense the real even when it cannot be directly reached. For Harman, the feeling of beauty can be connected to the disclosure of the depth of the real object. In a present in which we are repeatedly urged to settle for minor and continually arriving sensory pleasures, this perspective leads to a pressing educational question: what kinds of sensuous experiences can guide children toward treating beings more justly? Poster Walking-With as Method: Writing, Drawing and Learning in Motion in Art Education i2ADS - Research Institute in Art, Design and Society, FBAUP, Porto, Portugal Presenting Author:This proposal presents part of an ongoing doctoral research project in the field of Arts Education, that explores walking-with as an artistic and methodological approach to learning, researching and thinking collectively. In this context, walking is understood as a condition through which attention, knowledge and relationships are produced. Developed in educational and urban contexts - between school, street, and museum - the research is based on the assumption that learning is not only cognitive or discursive, but also embodied, situated, and relational. Walking practices create conditions for slowing down, sharing rhythms, and cultivating forms of attention that challenge accelerated and results-oriented models of education. In this framework, learning is understood as something that develops through presence, care and correspondence with others and with the place. The central theme of this research is the articulation between movement, attention and learning in arts education. Walking is approached as an artistic and pedagogical practice that allows research to emerge with participants, rather than being conducted on them. This approach brings collective experience, uncertainty and openness to the fore, privileging processes over results. The study is guided by the following main questions:
Conceptually, the research is informed by perspectives that challenge representational and extractive models of knowledge. The notion of walking-with emphasises learning as a relational process, produced through the correspondence between bodies, places, and situations. Attention is understood not as an individual cognitive ability, but as a shared and cultivated practice that develops over time. Writing and drawing play a central role in this context - they are approached as embodied practices that allow lived experience to continue in another form. Writing and drawing, and their lines, are understood as gestures, marks that translate movement, allowing thought to happen through the body. The aim of this research is not to produce generalisable results or fixed models, but to articulate a practice-based methodological approach. By focusing on how learning and research occur, the study aims to contribute to discussions in arts education, research-creation and embodied pedagogy, offering walking-with as a method that privileges slowness, relationality and collective attention. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This research adopts a qualitative, practice-based, process-oriented methodological approach. Walking together is not treated as a data collection technique, but as a methodological condition through which learning and research develop. The methodology is relational and situated, evolving in response to each particular group and context. Walking constitutes the central methodological framework, enabling embodied, collective and attentive forms of learning. Participants are invited to walk together, sometimes without predefined destinations, allowing attention to shift from outcomes to what happens along the way. The research is conducted through a set of interconnected methods: . collective walking practices . intentional pauses for engagement with places . embodied listening to the place and others . writing and drawing during and after walking experiences These methods are understood as methodological gestures that support attention, presence and shared research. The main instruments and sources of research consist of materials generated by practice, produced during these walking processes. These include: drawings, maps, and spatial notes; written fragments and short texts; photographs documenting gestures and traces; field notes written by the researcher. These materials are treated as relational sources that carry the traces of movement, attention and collective experience. Analysis and reflection occur through revisiting and juxtaposing these materials over time - and the poster proposed in this submission to ECER 26 is an opportunity to test exactly that. The visual and textual fragments presented in the poster function as extensions of the research process itself, making its methods, gestures, and materials visible - and once again open to reinterpretation. The poster thus functions not only as a means of disseminating research, but as a methodological device aligned with practice. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As this is an ongoing practical investigation, the expected results are understood as situational insights, methodological articulations, and shared understandings that emerge through practice. By placing walking-with at the forefront as a condition for learning, the investigation contributes to rethinking how educational and research processes can be embodied, relational, and context-aware. I seek to make walking-with a practice that supports collective attention, openness to uncertainty, and learning through shared presence. Another expected result concerns the role of writing and drawing in walking practices. As an artist and researcher, I hope that writing-walking and drawing-while-moving will function not only as tools for documentation, but as embodied ways of thinking, giving visibility to the movement of thought, also through the body. I hope to find ways of understanding knowledge as something that can be produced through gesture, rhythm and resonance, and not only through verbal or representational forms. In the context of the poster presentation, these processes and materials will be presented as fragments that make the research process visible, inviting dialogue and reflection. Overall, the expected contribution of this research lies in broadening methodological discussions in arts education and research-creation, proposing ‘walking-with’ as a way of learning, researching and being together that values slowness, care and relational knowledge.
