Poster Supporting Authenticity and Engagement in Practice Education for Autistic Students: Views from the Speech and Language Therapy Student and Practice Educator. Birmingham City University, United Kingdom Presenting Author:In 2021, one in every 127 people were estimated to be on the autism spectrum globally (Santomauro et al., 2021). The number of autistic students at university increasing both in the UK and Europe (Gormley et al, 2024, HESA, 2024) though the number is likely to be higher than official figures because not all choose to disclose (Hull et al., 2017) or have been diagnosed (Doherty et al, 2023). Speech and language are central teaching and learning tools, as they are the means through which teachers instruct, support, and assess students. This has implications for autistic students since they are likely to experience challenges with social communication and interaction (APA 2022). Our actual and perceived ability to communicate ‘effectively’ (including understanding verbal and non-verbal communication) is influenced by our intersectional experiences, cultural differences and other factors including neurotype. Awareness and adaptation of one’s own communication skills is a key part of practice education including speech and language therapy (SaLT) (Dantuma, 2021). For autistic SaLT students, the core interactional differences between autistic and neurotypical people can pose both challenges and opportunities for those practicing in a majority neurotypical society. However, SaLT, whose aim is to maximise an individual’s communication potential, has been traditionally and historically rooted in a conventional medical paradigm (Pellicano and Houting, 2022). Practice-based learning is central to professional training and placement experiences affect students’ intention to persist with their studies and employment plans after graduation (Pesonen et al, 2021). Autistic students face significant and unique barriers in both academic and practice-based learning. The social model of disability attributes these barriers to environmental and cultural factors (Rieser, 2023). However, although listening to neurodivergent perspectives can progress equity and deconstruct ableism, research that explores the views, priorities and experiences autistic students have of their interactions within these social and physical environments (i.e. education and employment; Gormely, 2024) is still emerging. Given this context, we were interested to explore the experience and perceptions of practice-based learning from the perspective of students and recently qualified autistic SaLTs, and their placement educators (some of whom will themselves be autistic). We posed the following research questions: 1. What challenges and support do autistic SaLT students experience during practice-based learning? 2. How much do autistic SaLT students perceive that these practice-based learning experiences contribute to their motivation and identity? 3. What suggestions for support and reasonable adjustments do autistic SaLT students identify during practice-based learning? By posing the above questions, we set out to address the following objectives: • To identify effective ways to support placement educators in meeting the needs of this group of students; • To produce recommendations and resources to support the practice-based education of autistic SaLTs; • To share the information gained to enable the above to be carried forward into/inform Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) and future workplaces. Taking a neurodiverse affirming approach, the research adopts a critical realist paradigm (Bhaskar, 1975) to examine lived realities and the internal and external factors that contribute to these. Tension between neurotypical standards deemed ‘professional’ and neurodivergent ways of being are likely to impact engagement and identity and are therefore interrogated by applying the social determination theory of motivation (Deci and Ryan, 2000). Examining autistic SaLT students and practitioners and their placement educators’ experiences of competence, relatedness and autonomy - including how they shape their motivation and identity -has relevance across HEI disciplines, particularly practice-based disciplines like SaLT given the fact that communication underpins teaching, learning and assessment in all fields of education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This research sought to discover which aspects of practice-based learning are most important from the perspective of autistic SaLT students, practitioners, and their placement educators. Seven autistic level 6 SaLT students, six autistic SaLTs, four autistic SaLT placement educators and five non-autistic placement educators who have supported an autistic SaLT student were recruited opportunistically in Autumn 2024. Recruitment involved emailing and circulating adverts to all HEIs in the UK offering SaLT as an undergraduate route; the RCSLT neurodivergent SaLTs’s and disabled working group; a regional placement educator’s group; and via social media contacts and groups. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods research design (Creswell & Creswell, 2023) was created to investigate the observable and underlying factors involved in the practice-based learning experiences of autistic SLT students. University ethical approval was obtained prior to data collection and responses were recorded anonymously and stored securely and confidentially on encrypted password protected university laptops. Phase one involved an online questionnaire created to explore themes present in the literature and was administered during November-December 2024. This captured both numerical data (e.g. when diagnosed) and descriptive qualitative data from twenty-two participants. Numerical data was analysed using descriptive statistics and descriptive qualitative data was analysed by research assistants trained on inductive reflexive thematic analysis (Joy et al., 2023). Eleven participants took part in phase two, when online semi-structured interviews were conducted in January-February 2025 to probe and further explore the themes identified in phase one using thematic analysis. Finally, six participants took part in the phase 3 focus group interviews to confirm and gain insight into their experience of the identified themes. The focus groups were moderated by the two main research investigators, with two new research assistant being in attendance, who transcribed and analysed the data using a thematic/inductive analytical approach The research team discussed the content, meaning, definitions and conceptual links of the themes generated. This reflexive approach was particularly important given the unique experiences of the research team, all of whom were aware of autism and the range of disability models within education and psychology that contributed to their consideration of themes related to support, diagnosis, identity and belonging (Joy et al., 2023). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Phase one data identified 40% of practicing SLTs who are autistic and 57% of current autistic final year students received their diagnosis after starting their SLT post or studies, and that experience during their practice-based learning or the placement educators supporting this were a catalyst in pursuing this. Phase two findings identified further information around seeking a diagnosis and emotional wellbeing and regulation, and detail about shared understandings (or not), honesty, openness and transparency, and strengths versus prejudicial deficits. Phase three data analysis is currently in the final stages, and includes detail around: • belonging (when safety is/is not present, so when masking is intentional, when true identities are shared or suppressed, and the reality of liminal disability); • competence (purpose and intrinsic motivation versus academic challenges or misinterpretations and ableist barriers which vary depending on placement educator perspectives) and; • autonomy (strategies and adjustments that support and progress success and how the intuition and insight of autistic SaLTs progress their support of clients with speech, language, and communication (SLC) needs). We are already sharing findings in our own university, both with students and placement educators, and are presenting at the National Association of Educators in Practice (UK) in March. Our ECER poster will visually present our findings and so be accessible to those with diverse learning approaches. It will summarise our discussion, the European Speech and Language Therapy Association’s priority of raising awareness of the importance of SLC skills, which impact to lives of million, among policymakers, healthcare providers, and the general public. In line with the Strategy for the rights of persons with disabilities 2021-2030 (European Commission, 2021), the research will contribute to the removal of barriers to learning by enabling access to quality practice education, with implications for equality of opportunity, identity formation, employment possibilities, career trajectory and advocacy. Poster Study Hard, Work Hard! Board Game for Career Development Learning in Higher Education University of Debrecen, Hungary Presenting Author:Higher education institutions face growing pressure to enhance students’ employability and better prepare them for increasingly complex and uncertain labour markets. While policy frameworks emphasise career development learning (CDL), competence development, and work-related skills, these elements often remain weakly integrated into university curricula, particularly in theory-driven programmes (Bridgstock 2009, Bridgstock, et al. 2019, Dean et al. 2022, Tomlinson 2017). Students frequently report difficulties in translating academic knowledge into real-life decision-making related to employment, financial management, and career planning. These challenges are especially visible in Central and Eastern European higher education systems, where student employment during studies is widespread and often driven by financial necessity (Hauschildt et al. 2021, Kocsis & Pusztai 2024). This paper addresses these issues by examining an innovative, research-based educational board game, Study Hard, Work Hard!, designed to support career development learning through experiential and playful pedagogy in higher education. The game simulates realistic student life situations, including budgeting, student employment, scholarship opportunities, job interviews, and time management dilemmas. It aims to foster employability-related competences such as decision-making, communication, reflection, collaboration, and financial awareness. The central research question guiding this study is: How do university students perceive the educational value and realism of a board game designed to support career development learning and employability-related skill development? The study is grounded in three complementary theoretical frameworks. First, career development learning theory conceptualises career management as a lifelong process involving self-awareness, opportunity awareness, and informed decision-making. Second, experiential learning theory emphasises learning through concrete experience, reflection, and active engagement, which aligns with the game’s simulation-based design (Bridgstock, et al. 2019, Dean et al. 2022, Tomlinson 2017). Third, game-based learning and playful pedagogy provide the pedagogical foundation for understanding how analogue board games can support motivation, peer interaction, and deep learning in higher education contexts (Karbownik et al., 2016, Manzano-León et al. 2021). The international relevance of the study lies in its integration of empirical data from large-scale European student surveys (e.g. EUROSTUDENT) into the game mechanics, ensuring realism and cross-national applicability. Although the empirical case is situated in Hungary, the challenges addressed, student employment, employability gaps, and the need for innovative CDL practices, are shared across European higher education systems. The paper therefore contributes a Central and Eastern European perspective to international debates on employability, active learning, and pedagogical innovation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employs a quantitative-dominant mixed-methods design based on a pilot implementation of the Study Hard, Work Hard! board game within a credit-bearing university course focusing on job search skills. The research was conducted at a Hungarian higher education institution as part of an elective course coordinated by the university’s Career Centre. Participation in the board game activity was compulsory for enrolled students, ensuring full participation and a 100% response rate. The sample consisted of 104 undergraduate students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, including social sciences, humanities, business, pedagogy, and STEM fields. Participants represented different stages of study and varied employment and financial situations, reflecting the heterogeneity typical of higher education cohorts. Data were collected using a structured, anonymous questionnaire administered online after the gameplay session. The instrument combined validated scales and context-specific items. Motivation, engagement, cooperation, and perceived learning outcomes were measured using items adapted from the Questionnaire on Motivation for Cooperative Playful Learning Strategies. Additional items and open-ended questions were developed by the author to capture perceptions related to student employment, career planning, realism, and educational usefulness. The questionnaire included 21 Likert-scale items (1–5) assessing enjoyment, motivation, collaboration, perceived knowledge gains, realism, and reflective learning, followed by open-ended questions on perceived learning outcomes and suggestions for curriculum integration. Demographic and background variables were collected based on previously validated instruments. Given the exploratory nature of the study and the limited sample size, data analysis relied on descriptive statistical methods, complemented by thematic analysis of open-ended responses. The results were interpreted in relation to the study’s theoretical framework and existing international literature on game-based learning and career development learning. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings indicate that students perceived the board game as both highly engaging and educationally meaningful. Participants reported strong enjoyment, motivation, and peer collaboration, alongside increased awareness of student employment realities, financial challenges, and career-related decision-making. The highest-rated outcomes related to realism, reflection on personal choices, and the opportunity to practise employability-related skills in a low-stakes, supportive environment. Students highlighted that the game helped them better understand the complexity of balancing work and study, recognise available institutional support (such as scholarships), and reflect on long-term career implications of short-term decisions. Qualitative responses emphasised the value of informal learning, humour, teamwork, and discussion, suggesting that the game created a safe space for reflection and self-expression. The study suggests that board game-based pedagogy can effectively complement traditional teaching methods by addressing underrepresented but crucial topics such as career planning, financial literacy, and employability. Although the findings are based on a small-scale pilot and self-reported data, they point to the potential of analogue board games as low-cost, adaptable, and inclusive tools for career development learning in higher education. The paper concludes that integrating research-informed, experiential board games into university curricula can support student engagement and preparedness for life beyond higher education, while also offering transferable insights for diverse European and international contexts. Poster Creating Inclusive Digital Learning Spaces: Flexible Continuing Education for Child and Youth Professionals Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway Presenting Author:This poster presents the design and development of a new continuing education program entitled Competence Development in Work with Children and Youth, aimed at professionals working with children and adolescents across Norway. The initiative responds to a national call for more flexible and decentralized education pathways, addressing the need for accessible, practice-oriented professional learning opportunities that can be pursued alongside full-time employment. By offering a fully digital, modular program, the project seeks to broaden participation in continuing education beyond traditional campus-based formats and reach professionals across diverse geographical and institutional contexts. The central objective of the project is to design and pilot a flexible, research-informed continuing education model that supports professional competence development while allowing participants to remain embedded in their everyday work settings. The program targets a wide range of professionals, including those working in early childhood education, schools, child welfare services, health and social services, and community-based youth work. Rather than emphasizing credential accumulation alone, the program focuses on strengthening reflective practice, professional agency, and collaborative learning across disciplinary boundaries. The overarching research questions guiding the project are:
The program is built on three core design principles. First, flexibility is ensured through asynchronous learning activities and modular course structures, allowing participants to organize their learning around their workday and personal responsibilities. Second, fully digital delivery enables genuine location independence, with all teaching, collaboration, and assessment taking place online via the Canvas learning platform. Third, collaborative learning is emphasized through small interdisciplinary learning groups, fostering peer exchange, shared reflection, and mutual professional support across sectors. Pedagogically, the program adapts the U.S.-based ICMEE model (Viesca & Commins, 2026) to a Norwegian continuing education context. Each course module follows a structured five-step learning cycle: initial reflection, exploration, application (“Make it Work”), sharing, and final reflection. This cycle is designed to support participants in becoming aware of their own perspectives, engaging with research-based knowledge, applying insights in practice, and critically reflecting on changes in understanding over time. The theoretical framework underpinning the project is the Model for Orientations to Create a Positive Climate for Diversity (Viesca et al., 2024). The model identifies five interrelated orientations—agency, interconnectedness, openness, curiosity, and creativity—which together contribute to inclusive and supportive learning environments. In this project, these orientations inform both the pedagogical design and the intended learning outcomes of the program. The poster will illustrate how the five orientations are embedded within the learning cycle and aligned with module assignments and assessment criteria. The development of the program is supported by the university’s Learning Hub BLINK, a strategic initiative aimed at strengthening pedagogical innovation and supporting lecturers in the further development of their teaching. In this project, BLINK provides expertise and guidance specifically related to the flexibilization of teaching and learning, with the goal of reaching a broader and more diverse student body. This support has been central in shaping the program’s digital pedagogy, assessment design, and facilitation strategies, ensuring alignment with national priorities for accessible, decentralized, and high-quality continuing education. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The project adopts a qualitative, design-oriented research approach focusing on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a digital continuing education program. Data collection will take place throughout the first pilot phase, which includes two modules launching in spring 2026: Children and Youth’s Behavior, Communication, and Relationships and Project Development and Professional Role Understanding in Work with Children and Youth. Multiple data sources will be used to capture participants’ learning experiences and outcomes. First, continuous formative feedback will be collected through short reflective surveys embedded in the Canvas learning environment. These surveys invite participants to reflect on their engagement with course content, collaboration in learning groups, and perceived relevance to their professional practice. Second, participants’ written assignments and reflective submissions will be collected as primary data sources, providing insight into how learners integrate theoretical perspectives with practical experiences. Data analysis will be conducted using the Gioia methodology, an interpretive, grounded theory–inspired approach (Corbin & Strauss, 2008) that enables the integration of inductive insights and deductive structure through a rigorous yet flexible multi-stage coding process (Gioia et al., 2013). Both inductive and theoretically informed coding will be applied, allowing themes to emerge from the data while also examining how participants’ experiences reflect the five orientations of the diversity framework (Viesca et al., 2024). The five orientations—agency, interconnectedness, openness, curiosity, and creativity—will function as sensitizing concepts during analysis. Particular attention will be paid to how participants describe changes in perspective between the initial and final reflection stages of each topic. Ethical considerations include informed consent, anonymization of data, and secure data storage. The study focuses on professional learning experiences rather than personal or sensitive information about children or service users. The methodology aims to generate transferable insights into digital continuing education design. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The expected outcomes of this project relate both to educational design and to participants’ professional learning experiences. The poster will present preliminary insights from the design phase, including reflections on translating the ICMEE model into a fully digital Norwegian context and aligning pedagogical intentions with practical constraints faced by working professionals. It is anticipated that the five-step learning cycle will support deepened reflection and stronger connections between theory and practice. Initial findings are expected to show that repeated reflection—before and after engagement with content and practice—enhances participants’ awareness of their own assumptions, strengths, and professional development needs. Collaborative group work is expected to foster interconnectedness and mutual recognition across professional backgrounds, contributing to a positive learning climate. In relation to the theoretical framework, the project is expected to demonstrate how the five orientations for a positive climate for diversity can be operationalized within digital course design. The analysis will illustrate how agency is supported through practice-based assignments, openness and curiosity through dialogical reflection, and creativity and curiosity through flexible application tasks adapted to local contexts. More broadly, the project contributes to European discussions on lifelong learning, digitalization, and inclusive access to higher education. By documenting design principles, challenges, and emerging practices, the poster aims to offer a transferable model for institutions seeking to expand flexible, decentralized professional education. The role of the university facilitator will be highlighted as central to sustaining motivation, guiding reflection, and ensuring academic quality in fully digital professional learning environments. Poster Factors Influencing the Process of Construction of a University Student Identity and Study Success among First-generation University Students Charles University, Faculty of Education, Czech Republic (Czechia) Presenting Author:As access to tertiary education expands, universities are facing not only a growing number but also a greater diversity of students (Hussey & Smith, 2010). One consequence of the growing demographic diversity is the significant number of first-generation college students (FGCS), whose parents did not attain more than secondary education (Pascarella et al., 2004) and who make up more than 50% of university students in the Czech Republic (Hündlová & Šmídová, 2020). Depending on their social class background, applicants for university studies may differ in financial, social, and cultural resources (Stuber, 2009). Specifically, FGCS come from families with little or no experience of college education, which influences their ability to meet college expectations (Collier & Morgan, 2008). At the same time, FGCS are more at risk of experiencing a cultural mismatch between the values of academic institutions and the values of their family environment, which affects their academic performance (Stephens et al., 2012), and of dropping out of school (Ishitani, 2006). However, the experiences of FGCS in the Czech Republic are largely neglected, despite the Czech tertiary education's high dropout rate, especially in the first year of study (MŠMT, n. d.). An effective way to reduce the number of students dropping out of higher education is to successfully integrate them academically and socially (Tinto, 1975). However, the integration process tends to be more challenging for FGCS (Soria, Stebleton & Huesman, 2013). A key factor in successful integration is the formation of a new identity as a university student (Whitehead & Wright, 2017). The changes and challenges that students face during the transition from high school to university transform their identities (Hussey & Smith, 2010) and group membership. The process of identification with a new group is influenced by the perceived compatibility of existing and new identities, which tends to be lower for FGCS, making it more difficult for them to identify with their college peers (Iyer et al., 2009). However, the construction of a strong social identity as a university student, in the sense of affiliation with a group of university students and professionals in the field of study, contributes to both psychological well-being and academic success (Mavor et al., 2017). The presented research project examines how the process of construction of FGCS’ university student identity develops during the transitional first year of their university studies. It maps the challenges influencing this process and potentially threatening students’ academic success, and the protective factors through which they are able to face or avoid these challenges. The aim is to show how aspects of their diversity (e.g., learning and coping strategies) and other developed or developing identities enter into their interactions with the conditions and actors with whom they meet during their studies, and into their emerging university student identity. Identity is perceived from the perspective of social constructionist psychology as multidimensional, relational, contextual, and fluid (Burr, 2015) and through the lens of intersectionality as shaped by interwoven multidimensional power relations determined by class, gender, and other inequalities (Brenner, 2000). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used In this longitudinal qualitative study examining first-generation students from the beginning of the first year to the beginning of the second year of their university studies, research data were obtained using semi-structured interviews, shadowing, and a focus group. Participants were interviewed and shadowed several times to capture the important turning points in the process of construction of their university student identity. At the end of the first year of their studies, a focus group was conducted. The obtained data are processed qualitatively within an interpretative framework using reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2022). The studied sample consists of 7 first-generation university students between 19 and 30 years of age (4 female and 3 male) attending various faculties at Charles University and studying different fields of study. Two students studied through distance learning; one of them interrupted his studies after the first semester. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The empirical research study allowed us to show the variability of the construction of university student identity influenced by FGCS’ learning and coping strategies, other identities, and interactions with the conditions and actors of the university environment. The formation of a strong future professional identity related to the field of study; the transformation of study habits from surface to deep learning and learning with classmates contributing to good academic performance; establishing new friendships with classmates and a sense of shared purpose, which help to cope with possible challenging moments or partial academic failures; fulfilling family expectations; planning to return and help the original community; and an effort to avoid undesirable consequences of early withdrawal from studies (the need to work in non-graduate positions, taking on full financial responsibility, the threat of deportation from the country) can be considered protective factors supporting the formation of a strong university student identity and helping to remain in university studies. Factors that weaken the process of forming a university student identity and potentially lead to a greater risk of early dropout include surface learning, poor or deteriorating academic performance, comparing one's academic performance with that of others, isolation from classmates, fear of stigma related to heterosexism and ableism, weak identification with the field of study and potential future profession, creating a strong professional identity in an area where a university degree is not required, unfulfilled expectations or disappointment in studies, and imposter syndrome. In summary, the output is a visualization of the development of a university student identity, providing an opportunity to reflect on factors significant for the success of their university studies. Poster ***WITHDRAWN*** Pathway Experiences to Accessing, Progressing, and Completing Higher Education (HE) For Refugees and Asylum-seeking People in Scotland University of Glasgow, United Kingdom Presenting Author:Higher education systems are increasingly positioned as centres of social justice, inclusiveness, and socioeconomic mobility across Europe. In the United Kingdom, including Scotland, legislation that commits to widening access participation acknowledges refugees and people seeking asylum as disadvantaged groups. This recognition is explicit. On the other hand, despite these legislative goals, people who have been forcibly displaced (refugees and asylum seekers) continue to confront enormous structural, institutional, and affective challenges in gaining admission to higher education, advancing through it, and ultimately graduating. This research examines how educational research may both shed light on lived experiences and provide direction for transformational action within higher education systems in Scotland. The primary objective of this study is to understand the experiences of refugees and people seeking asylum in Scotland as they seek access to, progress within, and complete higher education. The research process is guided by the following questions: 1. What are the experiences of forcibly displaced people when accessing, progressing, and completing higher education in Scotland? a) To what extent does the status of forcibly displaced people influence and constrain their educational experience in higher education? (b) What are the implications of these constraints on the higher education trajectories for forcibly displaced people? 2. How (if any) are higher education institutions providing tailored educational support for forcibly displaced people to enhance their access, retention, and completion in Scottish higher education? The investigation is grounded in a multidisciplinary framework that emphasises human dignity, agency, and the equitable treatment of individuals. A critical lens for perceiving education as both a site of marginalisation and a possible space for liberation, Freire's (1970, 1994) pedagogy of the oppressed focuses on conversation, love, and conscientisation. Education is framed as a relational and ethical practice that requires care, acknowledgement, and mutual humanity, according to bell hooks' love ethic, which extends this concept further. In addition, the research draws on theories of social justice, specifically Rawls' (1971, 2004) principles of fairness, Sandel's (2011) criticisms of meritocracy, and Sen's (2009) capacity approach. Taking all of these viewpoints into consideration, the study investigates how structural inequalities, institutional arrangements, and governmental decisions shape the actual freedoms forcibly displaced people have to pursue and benefit from higher education. By acknowledging the ways in which legal status, race, gender, language, and trauma intersect to produce distinct experiences of exclusion and opportunity, intersectionality theory provides additional insight into the analysis. By incorporating these theoretical approaches, the study establishes education research as an ethical and political action. This action not only provides information, but it also challenges inequitable systems and leads to more just practices in higher education.
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study used a qualitative research design to elucidate the depth, complexity, and nuances of the experiences of forcefully displaced individuals in higher education. Qualitative methods are especially appropriate for this research, as they emphasise people's voices, meanings, and interpretations, which are sometimes overlooked in policy-driven or quantitative narratives around extending access. Data was produced via two interrelated methodologies. Semi-structured interviews were initially undertaken with members of widening access participation teams in some Scottish higher education institutions. The interviews examined institutional perspectives on policy implementation, support systems, perceived obstacles, and the assumptions underlying access, retention, and completion initiatives for refugees and people seeking asylum in Scotland. This institutional perspective facilitates analysis of how policy goals are translated into practice. We conducted repeated individual interviews with student refugees and people seeking asylum at various stages of their higher education experiences. Repeated interviews revealed details about transitions, disruptions, resilience, and adaptability throughout the phases of access, progression, and completion in Scottish higher education. This longitudinal perspective corresponds with the project's three- to four-year duration and enhances the validity of the results. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analysed. This method enables the identification of patterns in the data, taking into account the context, power dynamics, and the researcher's perspective. Ethical considerations were taken as a priority in the study, especially due to the participants’ possibly vulnerable legal situation and traumatic experiences. Informed consent, confidentiality, emotional welfare, and the opportunity to withdraw were valued throughout the research process. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This research aims to generate thorough empirical insights into the experiences of refugees and people currently enrolled as asylum seekers in Scottish higher education. We anticipate that the research findings will unveil structural barriers associated with immigration status, financial challenges, language, prior qualification recognition, and institutional cultures. The purpose of this study is to shed light on the various forms of agency, resilience, and informal support that enable certain disadvantaged people, such as refugees and people seeking asylum, to negotiate and combat marginalisation. At the institutional level, the analysis will most likely find contradictions between the language of extending access and actual practices, exposing discrepancies between policy intentions and student experiences. The analysis will likely reveal these contradictions. Within the context of forced migration, this project aims to use Freirean pedagogy, capacity theory, and intersectionality to improve the quality of conversations about social justice in the educational setting. To provide higher education institutions, policymakers, and practitioners with evidence-based guidance, the findings are intended to inform the creation of access policies and practices that are more humane, egalitarian, and responsive. Poster How Does Interdisciplinary Student Collaboration Unfold in Team-Based Projects: A Qualitative Multiple-Case Study 1: Leiden University, the Netherlands; 2: Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway Presenting Author:In interdisciplinary education, students’ group collaboration is often used to simulate real-world collaboration, where individuals from different disciplinary backgrounds work together to solve complex problems (Klein, 1990; Repko & Szostak, 2020). Although this pedagogical strategy is widely adopted, empirical understanding of how interdisciplinary student teams collaborate around classroom-based tasks remains limited. Prior studies have predominantly focused on learning outcomes (e.g., grades, productivity, and knowledge gains), tending to rely on self-report measures, rather than closely examining collaborative processes as they unfold in practice. Some empirical studies have focused on collaborative processes in group work more generally. For example, Van Leeuwen et al. (2014) showed that students’ interaction patterns and role negotiations change dynamically during collaboration, suggesting that collaborative roles and forms of participation are not fixed but continuously renegotiated over time. Similarly, Han and Ellis (2021) found that interdisciplinary teamwork is shaped by uneven role distributions , in which students differed in their levels and forms of participation, as well as by recurring interaction patterns, such as stable participation roles and repeated sequences of engagement, which influenced students’ involvement and engagement. Beyond interactional processes, theoretical work has emphasized the broader context in which collaboration takes place. Jornet and Damşa (2021) argued that collaboration should be understood as a sociomaterial process, in which knowledge emerges through students’ interactions with peers, tools, and learning environments. Markauskaite et al. (2023) further conceptualized interdisciplinary collaboration as part of an “educational ecology,” highlighting the interconnected roles of individual factors (e.g., students’ disciplinary backgrounds and prior experiences), social factors (e.g., interaction patterns, role relations, and norms of collaboration), material factors (e.g., tasks, tools, and digital platforms), and institutional factors (e.g., course structures, assessment requirements, and instructional arrangements). While these studies have significantly advanced our understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration by focusing on interactional and ecological perspectives, less attention has been paid to how interdisciplinary collaboration is enacted in classroom practice. This study focuses on the question of how students experience, enact, and reflect on collaborative processes within interdisciplinary team-based projects. Adopting a process-oriented focus, the study traces students’ collaborative work over time by following group meetings and discussions and observing how teams jointly conduct system analysis, engage in interdisciplinary investigation, develop and negotiate critical arguments, and integrate knowledge across disciplines as they progress toward completing their projects. It examines multiple cases across different courses and team contexts to enrich and contextualize this understanding, and to explore similarities and variations in how collaboration unfolds. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopts a multiple-case qualitative research design, integrating naturalistic observation and semi-structured reflective interviews. Phase 1: Naturalistic Observation Six interdisciplinary student teams drawn from different interdisciplinary courses were recruited. Each team was treated as a distinct case. Data included detailed field notes and audio recordings of in- and out of class teamwork, informal discussions, and online collaboration sessions. The researcher acted as a non-participant observer to preserve the authenticity of collaborative activity. The aim of this phase was to capture in-situ evidence of how students engage in interdisciplinary group collaboration as it unfolded in practice. Phase 2: Semi-Structured Reflective Interviews After student projects were completed, individual semi-structured reflective interviews (30–45 minutes) were conducted with students from each team. The interview protocol was designed to elicit reflection on students’ collaborative processes and learning experiences using six interconnected dimensions: (1) perceived contributions and group formation, (2) evolving problem understanding, (3) interdisciplinary investigation strategies and methods, (4) argumentation and decision-making processes, (5) knowledge integration across disciplinary perspectives, and (6) evaluation of collaboration and perceived teacher support. Data Analysis Group interaction data will be analyzed with a focus on students’ dialogue and interactional sequences during collaborative problem-solving. An interaction coding scheme will be used to capture key collaborative processes, including problem framing, negotiation of meanings, disciplinary positioning, idea elaboration and challenge, conflict management, and the co-construction of shared understanding. Coding will be conducted at the level of interactional episodes, enabling close examination of how collaborative practices emerge and shift over time within each group. Interviews are still in progress. The data will be analyzed using thematic analysis. Inductive coding will be used to identify themes related to perceptions of interdisciplinary roles, communication challenges, group dynamics, and learning experiences. These themes will be compared with patterns from interaction analysis to examine how students’ interpretations correspond to, or differ from, their observed practices. Through cross-case analysis shared patterns and context-specific variations in interdisciplinary collaboration may be identified. Finally, findings from group interaction and interview analyses will be triangulated to enhance analytic credibility and develop a comprehensive understanding of interdisciplinary collaboration in authentic group work settings. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings At the time of writing, data collection and analysis are still ongoing. The current data and analysis already provide insight into how interdisciplinary collaboration unfolds in practice. Firstly, students consistently engaged in problem framing and task negotiation. They devoted substantial interactional effort to clarifying assignment requirements, selecting and refining project topics, and defining the core challenges. These negotiations reflected disciplinary differences in how students framed sustainability problems, with some prioritizing technical feasibility and others emphasizing ethical, social, or normative considerations. Secondly, collaboration involved continuous knowledge integration and joint decision-making. Students combined perspectives from multiple domains relevant to their project to co-construct workable solutions. Thirdly, the data reveal strong patterns of collaborative problem-solving and adaptive regulation. Teams encountered technical, conceptual, and organizational difficulties and responded through experimentation, peer scaffolding, redistribution of responsibilities, and simplification of goals. Socio-emotional processes—such as encouragement, humor, emotional regulation, and shared responsibility—were crucial for sustaining collaboration, particularly under frustration and uncertainty. Further data analysis will further explore the collaborative processes, students’ reflections on collaboration and the differences and similarities between distinct interdisciplinary programmes in which students complete collaborative tasks.
