Paper Rethinking Loneliness through Education: A Hermeneutic Analysis of Intergenerational Service-Learning 1: UNIR, Spain; 2: UCM, Spain Presenting Author:In recent years, undesired loneliness has gained increasing attention as a major social and Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The present research adopts a qualitative methodological approach grounded in a theoretical and hermeneutic perspective, aimed at developing an in-depth understanding of loneliness as a social and educational phenomenon, with particular attention to intergenerational relationships and relational processes within educational contexts. Given the complexity and multidimensional nature of loneliness, the study is framed within an interpretative and contextualised approach that allows for a critical analysis of meanings, narratives, and conceptual frameworks associated with lived experiences of social disconnection. The study is conceived as a theoretical inquiry focused on analysing the potential of intergenerational Service-Learning as an educational approach to addressing loneliness and fostering social connection. The research explores its pedagogical, relational, and ethical foundations, paying particular attention to its capacity to promote meaningful encounters, dialogue, reciprocity, and mutual recognition between generations in educational and community settings. From a methodological standpoint, the research is based on a systematic review and critical analysis of academic literature relevant to Service-Learning, intergenerational education, loneliness, character education, and care-based educational approaches. The study draws on peer-reviewed theoretical and empirical contributions retrieved from recognised academic databases, within a defined temporal framework. The analysis prioritises conceptual coherence and theoretical depth, enabling a comprehensive examination of how Service-Learning has been framed as a response to social and relational challenges in contemporary educational discourse. The analytical process is organised around key dimensions, including theoretical conceptualisations of loneliness, the role of intergenerational relationships in educational contexts, the pedagogical principles underpinning Service-Learning, and its ethical and formative potential for cultivating care, social responsibility, and community engagement. These dimensions serve as lenses through which the educational value and limitations of Service-Learning are examined in relation to the challenge of loneliness. This hermeneutic and theoretical approach allows for a nuanced understanding of loneliness as an educational concern and contributes to the conceptual clarification of Service-Learning as a framework with the potential to strengthen social bonds and support the reconstruction of the social fabric. The study aims to offer a solid theoretical basis to inform future research and educational practice in this field. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings As an ongoing doctoral research, this study does not seek to produce generalisable causal conclusions or empirical evidence derived from intervention-based outcomes. Instead, its main contribution lies in offering a theoretically grounded and interpretative analysis of loneliness as a socio-educational phenomenon. Through a critical engagement with existing literature, the study aims to refine the conceptual understanding of loneliness across the life course, identifying both shared dimensions and age-specific features within educational and relational contexts. The research contributes to the clarification of the relational, cultural, and contextual factors that frame experiences of loneliness, particularly in contemporary European societies characterised by social transformation and fragmentation. By examining dominant narratives, conceptual models, and educational discourses, the study highlights key analytical dimensions such as stigma, social expectations, and the quality of interpersonal and intergenerational relationships. Furthermore, the study offers a conceptual contribution to socio-educational debates by analysing the potential of intergenerational Service-Learning as a pedagogical framework for addressing loneliness. Rather than evaluating concrete practices, it explores how educational settings and intergenerational approaches may constitute meaningful spaces for encounter, care, and social connection. In doing so, the research seeks to inform future empirical studies and educational practices, while contributing to broader academic discussions on loneliness, education, and social cohesion. Paper Adapting Lundy’s (2007) Model of Participation to Incorporate the Material Aspect of Children’s UNCRC Afforded Participation Rights in UK Schools. University of Leeds, United Kingdom Presenting Author:Lundy’s (2007) model for conceptualising Article 12 of the UNCRC has been hugely influential in research. It argues that “Space, Voice, Audience and Influence” are required for the fulfilment of children’s participation rights and forms the basis for many research projects on this topic. This research project introduces a post-humanist theoretical approach to the research of children’s participation rights in UK schools, considering the explicit incorporation of the matter with which children interact at school, and by which they express themselves, to be an essential component of understanding how agency is produced. The addition of a relational-materialist perspective to the child-led, participatory, standard in modern social research of childhood encourages work which takes a nuanced perspective on agency and treats it as a starting point for understanding children’s social worlds, rather than a terminus (Prout, 2000). Child-led participatory research since Lundy’s (2007) model was devised often relies on attempts to give children platforms to express themselves which are separate from the daily interactions in which their participation rights are facilitated or inhibited. Children’s utterances in research encounters are often presented as the result of a capacity for agency inhered in the individual human, pre-existing the interactions in which they are housed (Jackson, 2003). The human agent who “knows who she is, says what she means and means what she says” is rejected in new materialist conceptions of voice, including those which research children’s voices in learning institutions (Maclure, 2009, no pagination; Harvey et al., 2021). This perspective on social research, as well as other duties in the UNCRC such as the principle of ‘Evolving Capacities’ (Article 5) call for an expansion of Lundy’s (2007) model which encourages the participation of children without reliance on their ‘voices’ as conceived thus far, or on specialised participatory spaces (Varadan, 2019). By combining a rights-based approach with post-humanist social research in this project, the tenets of childhood studies and rights respecting research can be upheld, namely those which impel a duty to provide opportunity for active and agentive participation in research, while tempering these principles with the troubling of traditional humanist conceptions of matter and of the mind-body dualism in which voice “lingers close to the true and the real… seen almost as a mirror to the soul” (Alderson, 2012; James and Prout, 2015; Mazzei and Jackson, 2017, pgs.1090 & 1091). I will present the methodology for this study, its early findings and its potential impact on understanding the enactment of participation rights in schools, as well as on theories of rights as they are applied to children. By demonstrating the affective force of the materials with which children interact in schools on the formation and expression of their views, I will argue that Lundy’s (2007) model for participation rights should explicitly address the material component of autonomy rights, encouraging a duty among researchers and educators to facilitate every-day, relational and co-produced agentic participation,outside of devoted participatory activities which are limited in their impact and accessibility. The value of increasing the accessibility of agentic participation can also be seen in the opportunities to promote “voice” in a way that is not dependent on language, increasing opportunities for international co-production and for easier engagement in UK schools by those for whom English is not their primary language. The theme of “Controversial Topics in Children’s Rights and Education” in the main conference seeks to challenge established assumptions in research. This presentation may facilitate similar discussion in the emerging researcher’s conference about how children’s rights may be researched as co-produced, challenging the relied upon model of participatory research in the field of childhood studies. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) utilising art-based methods made up the first part of this study, with an emphasis on the immanent production of artefacts wherein the matter with which the young people intra-act to explore the space of the school are regarded as affective co-producers of the data alongside participants, researcher and the complex communication system of the school (Baraldi, 2022; Barad, 2007). In the first part of the FGDs, participants were asked to make maps depicting part of their school or classroom, paying attention to areas where they make decisions. This allowed the physical space of the school and its material make up to be central in their contribution. In the second part of the FGDs, the participants designed their own classroom. These tasks allowed the participants to explore their current, lived, experiences of school life and their views on what school ought to be like, without demanding immediate, independent, verbal reflection with a researcher. The use of materials present, many of which are associated with play or learning in younger age-groups allowed the children to be active, engaged participants, without overburdening them or infringing the duties placed on rights respecting researchers. The artefacts produced will be presented along with tracing lines of flight from aspects of them which affected the output of the group as a whole. This method of analysis utilises memo making and diffractive reading of research encounters to incorporate the spoken words of children in research spaces alongside the material production of the group as a whole (Freeman, 2014). The FGDs undertaken approach the research data as the product of an embodied, immanent and relational endeavour, where “hotspots” may be identified which impact the creative work of all present (Maclure, 2013). The second data generation method will be a series of participant observations of day-to-day interactions in normal classroom learning. The findings of the FGDs will inform the observation phase of this study- to take place after the submission of this application but before the conference. Areas of and interactions within the school identified as participatory by the FGD participants will be the focus of the observations. Attention will be paid in the analysis of field notes to points of contact observed between the imagined classrooms of the children in FGDs and their real classroom learning. This will allow for features which enhance or inhibit children’s autonomy in the classroom to be identified and explored. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The early findings of this study have centred on the participants use of the media on offer in FGDs as a liberating and empowering tool for the enactment of their rights. Within the FGDs this has occurred through their employment of Play-Doh as a tool for self-reassurance and emotional regulation while settling into the research environment, and the creation of familiar shapes associated with these tools and the norms of play with which they, particularly Lego and Play-Doh, are typically associated. Additionally, the affective force of these materials can be seen in the artefacts and the types of classrooms and that the young people imagine and co-create, often leading to an emphasis on play, movement and the absence of traditional desk-based learning, as well as a clear desire for collaborative approaches to learning. As a result, and depending on the findings in the rest of the study, I feel there may be a great deal of value in expanding Lundy’s (2007) model for participation when focussing on schools. At present Lundy’s (2007) model consists of voice, space, audience and impact. A fifth criteria, to sit between space and audience, would place a duty on educators and researchers to facilitate the enactment of children’s participation rights by providing multiple media for the expression of their voice. This addition will acknowledge the principle of ‘evolving capacities’ as a cross-cutting standard of the UNCRC as well as reducing an overemphasis on vocal utterances by children, which privileges those more comfortable or capable in their speech (Hanson and Lundy, 2017). As a result, school children would be afforded greater opportunities for agentic decision making, reducing the need for spaces such as school councils or consultation groups which are easily led or manipulated by adults (Chateris and Smardon, 2019). Paper “I Like to Think of it as a Struggle for Participation.” Phenomenographic Study About Teachers' Conceptions of Democracy in Chile. 1: Universidad de Chile, Chile; 2: Universidad Alberto Hurtado, Chile Presenting Author:The global context of the crisis of democracy has been recorded in recent reports by various international organizations (IDEA, 2024; 2025, Nord et al., 2025). Thus, the 2025 Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) report notes that the world has fewer democracies than autocracies for the first time in more than 20 years, with three out of four people living under authoritarian rule. Furthermore, it is reported that current average democratic levels are on par with those of 1985, with Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and South Asia being the most affected by a “wave of autocratization,” although there is also democratic weakening in Latin America, Western Europe, and North America. Likewise, the decline in freedom of expression in 44 countries during 2024 (Nord et al., 2025) is alarming, which is validated by the 2025 IDEA report that identifies freedom of the press and expression as the most affected rights in at least 25% of the countries participating in the study (IDEA, 2025). Faced with this landscape of democratic uncertainty, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has developed guidelines and recommendations for school communities to strengthen democratic and civic education (UNESCO, 2019). Specifically, one of the focuses is the implementation of education for global citizenship, within the framework of the 2030 agenda, which promotes a culture of democracy, human rights, peace, and non-violence (UNESCO, 2023). Thus, the main aim is for students to value human dignity, cooperation, and dialogue, with a focus on developing knowledge, skills, and attitudes that foster tolerance, empathy, and respect for the diversity of cultures and opinions. Achieving this goal requires teachers who are strongly committed to the exercise of democracy and citizenship education. Likewise, various studies have highlighted the importance of teachers' beliefs regarding teaching and learning processes, as well as pedagogical and didactic decision-making (Estévez-Nenninger et al., 2014). In this sense, what teachers believe and mean has a direct impact on their daily practices and, as a correlate, on student learning (Trigwell & Prosser, 1991). Similarly, what teachers do—or teach—would be a direct consequence of what they actually think. This is where the importance of investigating the ideas and beliefs that teachers express about democracy lies: it allows us to better understand the practices and possibilities of approaching democratic education in schools in line with the urgency represented by the current context of democratic fragility. This presentation is based on the initial results of doctoral research that seeks to understand the conceptions of democracy and democratic education expressed by teachers of various subjects and school levels in two regions of Chile. On this occasion, the findings to be presented and discussed relate to the conceptions of democracy held by the participating teachers, specifically their definitions, characteristics, and diagnosis in the context of democratic fragility. Some preliminary results show that teachers conceive of democracy from political perspectives linked to the exercise of participation and choice in various areas of social life, with an emphasis on decision-making. Likewise, the diagnosis of a democratic crisis linked to hate speech on social media, disappointment, and mistrust of society due to political corruption, among other issues, is highlighted. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The doctoral research is a qualitative study with convenience sampling and use of the phenomenographic method (Marton, 1994). The call for participation was open, through digital platforms (LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook) and email, to primary or secondary school teachers working in public or private schools in the Metropolitan Region (capital city) or Los Ríos Region (southern city), who meet at least one of the following criteria: 1. Work as a primary school teacher in the subjects of History and Social Sciences, Language, and/or Science. 2. Teach secondary education in the subjects of History and Social Sciences, Philosophy, Citizenship Education, Language, Science, or Science for Citizenship. 3. Be in charge of the school's citizenship education plan (Law 20.911). The first phase involved seven focus groups: four in the Metropolitan Region (capital city) and three in Los Ríos Region (southern city). In addition, three of these sessions were held in rural areas and four in urban areas, with five focus groups held in person and two held virtually (Zoom platform). A total of 36 teachers (17 men and 19 women) from eight different school subjects participated. The purpose of this phase was to understand and analyze teachers' conceptions of democracy and democratic education. The initial results to be shared in this presentation correspond to this first phase of research. Thus, based on the identification of critical or high-interest cases (Trigwell, 2000) from the previous phase, a second phase was implemented with 22 in-depth interviews, 11 in each region. The purpose of this phase was to describe experiences narrated by the interviewed teachers that were relevant to the arise and development of their conceptions of democracy and democratic education. All interviews were conducted virtually (Zoom platform). Finally, in the third stage (2026), classroom observations will be conducted on four cases from the previous participants, corresponding to two cases in each region. The purpose of this third phase is to analyze classroom practices related to democratic education among participating teachers, focusing on curricular and didactic elements and pedagogical interactions. For this research, we will use Rotar's (2024) phenomenographic analysis model, which proposes a framework that articulates stages of data analysis in conjunction with steps of practical reflection, allowing for the explicitation of the researcher's subjectivity in the process of producing and interpreting information. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This paper seeks to report on the initial results of the first phase of doctoral research related to the analysis of Chilean teachers' conceptions of democracy, which will be analyzed and discussed through the perspectives of democracy and democratic education of Biesta (2006; 2011) and Sant (2019), as well as to highlight emerging results. This research provides insight into teachers' conceptions of democracy, which is directly related to the possibilities and opportunities for democratic education that can be developed in school settings. Furthermore, considering that this is a line of inquiry that is underdeveloped (Menéndez et al., 2023) but of great interest in recent times (Belavi et al., 2021), the contribution of the results of this study lies in contributing to an emerging and necessary field of research in a context of democratic fragility. Likewise, this study seeks to contribute to the exercise of thinking about and designing teacher training in which democracy is not only a subject of disciplinary teaching but also a disposition, willingness, and action linked to the democratic convictions of teachers (Redón et al., 2021) necessary to enable democratic education. Finally, at a time when democracy is being questioned and threatened by denialist and extremist sectors that advocate hate speech (Hickey et al., 2025; IDEA, 2024; 2025), schools and teachers must take a stand for democratic education. It is therefore important to investigate the conceptions that teachers construct around democracy, as they are key players in building a more respectful, fair, and egalitarian society from within schools themselves. Paper Science Teachers’ Learning and Challenges in a Professional Development Program Based on the Reconceptualized Family Resemblance Approach METU, Middle East Technical University, Education Faculty, Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Ankara, Türkiye Presenting Author:Despite the long history of the studies on the nature of science (NOS), debates continue about what exactly the NOS means, and which approach should be used to learn and teach it. Among the various approaches proposed in science education literature, the Reconceptualized Family Resemblance Approach (RFN) has gained increasing attention. RFN addresses NOS in a holistic and inclusive way and integrates science under two interconnected systems: the cognitive-epistemic and the socio-cultural systems. The adaptation of Ludwig Wittgenstein's theory of ‘family similarity’ (1953) to NOS (Irzık & Nola, 2011; 2014) is forming the basis for RFN. By claiming that, science is presented as being more grounded in real-life practice; encompassing different scientific disciplines as a whole, like members of the same family; and expressing science not only as a science of experiments but also as a social, cultural, historical, politic, financial and institutional activity. The adaptation of this theory into education led to the birth of Family Resemblance Approach to Nature of Science, namely RFN (Erduran & Dagher, 2014).
While the literature on RFN frequently addresses theoretical frameworks, instrument development, informal science education, and curriculum analyses across diverse contexts such as Italy, Turkiye, Ireland, US, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, empirical studies focusing on educational interventions remain limited. As highlighted in a recent review by Cheung and Erduran (2023), such intervention studies have largely concentrated on pre-service teachers and students. Research on in-service teachers, by contrast, has primarily been confined to assessing their understanding of NOS and examining lesson plans. As a result, the practical implementation of RFN in real classroom settings with practicing teachers and real students remains underexplored.
Given the aforementioned gap and the fact that incorporating and imparting scientific knowledge of teachers into understanding the world is one of the ultimate aims of teacher professional development programs, examining in-service teachers’ learning experiences and challenges during RFN implementation will inform future researchers, the design of professional development programs, and instructional practices. Moreover, the researchers’ reflexivity about this specific case of teachers may offer valuable implications for policymakers and practitioners seeking to improve NOS implementation strategies.
The current study aims to document in-service science teachers’ learning during the implementation of a teacher professional development program based on RFN. Also, it highlights the researchers’ learning journey focusing on teachers’ challenges and reflective insights. This study is guided by the following research questions:
Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a single case research design. For the purpose of examining in-depth data, qualitative methods were used to gather data from six in-service science teachers working in a public school from 5th to 8th grade levels in Ankara, Türkiye. A convenience sampling method was chosen due to the location of the school (Creswell & Poth, 2016). All participating teachers had a minimum ten years of teaching experience and voluntarily attended to 13-week teacher professional development program that was designed by the researchers and pilot study conducted with different teachers and expert opinions about RFN. The program was implemented weekly with teachers as a group, and consisted of three stages. In the first stage, teachers collaboratively learned about the RFN through workshops led by the first researcher in the role of instructor. These workshops include learner-centered, collaborative, professional and reflective activities focused on the NOS. In the second stage, teachers designed an RFN-based lesson plan by selecting a unit, topic, and grade level aligned with the Turkish science curriculum. They received feedback from both their peers and the first researcher, and then implemented the lesson in their own classrooms with real students, under the first researcher's observation. Following the implementation, teachers engaged in self-reflection and received researcher feedback. In the third stage, each teacher independently designed their second lesson plans without getting any feedback and implemented it in a classroom of their choice. Similarly, units, topics and grade level were varied naturally by teachers in accordance with the curriculum. Lesson plans were required to address different topics from both the teachers’ initial plans and one another. Data collection tools in this study included teacher reflective journals, teachers’ lesson plans and classroom observations. Teachers were asked to reflect on their experiences after each implementation. Data related to teachers’ challenges were analyzed using content analysis, through which codes and themes emerged inductively (Krippendorff, 2018), and prolonged engagement and triangulation were used to increase the trustworthiness of the study. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings of this study reveal in-service science teachers’ learning during the implementation of a professional development program grounded in the RFN and the challenges they encountered., Rather than aiming to identify teachers' conceptual transformations regarding RFN, the study focuses specifically on learning in implementation and on how teachers addressed emerging challenges. These challenges included difficulties related to time management and curriculum coverage, and the enactment of RFN across different unit subjects areas, and grade levels. Teachers embraced the professional, collaborative, and reflective learning environment provided by the instructor, incorporating it into their own learning, which was reflected in the following results. First, teachers engaged in creative learning. They delivered lessons that made students feel like scientists through active learning strategies such as inquiry-based learning, problem-based learning and group work. Second, they engaged in professional learning by adapting the curriculum, time, textbooks, and lesson videos provided by the Turkish Ministry of National Education (MoNE, 2024) to align with the RFN framework. For example, they conducted group work beforehand to make good use of time, or they assigned preparatory tasks before lessons or used post-lesson activities for assessment. Third, they engaged in contextual learning by adapting RFN-based materials and practices to their specific grade level, classroom or laboratory conditions, and available school resources. This study argues that providing teachers with collaborative, reflective, and active learning environments and utilizing visual aids would be beneficial, as suggested by Erduran and Dagher (2014).
