Poster The Affective-Discursive Governance of Curriculum Reform: An Analysis of South Korea’s High School Credit System Seoul National University, Korea, Republic of (South Korea) Presenting Author:In response to rapidly changing societal landscapes, curriculum reform policies have proliferated worldwide, demanding fundamental restructuring of schooling. Yet the successful implementation of such reforms cannot be achieved through explicit directives or institutional controls alone. Reform efforts often falter without less visible mechanisms—motivational strategies that immerse policy actors in reform visions and ideals. What moves policy actors (Lähdesmäki et al., 2020), therefore, depends not only on cognitive appeals to rational deliberation but also, and crucially, on affective dimensions. Reform policies mobilize rhetorics that evoke particular feelings—such as hope, urgency, or moral responsibility—to encourage engagement (Zembylas, 2023a). Through rhetorical and representational devices that trigger and regulate affect, policies induce teachers and other actors to invest in reform ideas and to become their carriers in everyday practice (Moore & Clarke, 2016). From this perspective, the mobilization of affect operates as a constituent condition of contemporary education reform rather than a secondary or incidental feature (Zembylas, 2023b). Influenced by the “affective turn” in the humanities and social sciences, recent policy research has increasingly attended to these dimensions (Matus, 2017; Zembylas, 2022). Affect is understood as “visceral forces beneath, alongside, or generally other than conscious knowing” (Seigworth & Gregg, 2010, p. 1)—vital, relational forces that shape movement, attachment, and orientation beyond linguistic meaning alone. Affect can attach to diverse bodies, including humans, objects, discourses, and norms (Sedgwick, 2003). Within policy texts, affect adheres to vocabularies, numerical data, visual representations, and best practices, circulating to steer policy actors toward particular reform trajectories (Matus, 2017). By making specific futures feel desirable, necessary, or inevitable, affect functions as a political force—a governing strategy that regulates thinking and conduct toward predefined goals. Despite its centrality, affect has often been overlooked in curriculum policy research. Traditional studies have focused predominantly on the critical interpretation of explicit messages or on evaluating implementation outcomes (Webb & Gulson, 2012). Such approaches, however, risk neglecting how policy is enacted through what Masny and Cole (2009, p. 5) describe as “random collisions of affects.” Understanding the complex processes of policy formation and enactment therefore requires explicit attention to the affective registers embedded within policy texts and circulating through them. Addressing this gap, this study aims to analyze the specific affects mobilized in curriculum reform policy texts and to examine their political operations. It asks: (1) What types of affects are circulated within policy texts to encourage engagement with reform? and (2) How do these affective technologies produce political effects in the enactment of curriculum reform? Empirically, the study focuses on South Korea’s High School Credit System (HSCS), a nationwide curriculum reform fully implemented in 2025. By analyzing policy texts produced throughout the reform’s development, this study examines how affect is mobilized to compel participation and sustain reform trajectories. By foregrounding affective-discursive governance, the study extends critical policy research beyond analyses of content, ideology, and power relations, while offering transnational insights into how curriculum reforms are sustained amid contemporary educational crises. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used While the High School Credit System (HSCS) was fully implemented nationwide in 2025, its policy planning and discursive formation date back to 2017. This study analyzes 47 policy materials produced by South Korea’s Ministry of Education between 2017 and 2024, including 33 policy documents (master plans, manuals, press releases, and guidelines) and 14 promotional videos. These materials were selected to capture how the reform was progressively framed, justified, and circulated over time. Methodologically, the study adopts an affect-oriented approach to policy analysis. Rather than focusing on uncovering latent ideological meanings embedded in textual content—as is common in traditional discourse analysis (Kølvraa, 2015)—this approach attends to affective intensities that exceed manifest meaning. Affect is approached not as subjective emotion but as relational forces that emerge through encounters among language, visual representations, data, and policy actors. In this sense, policy texts are treated as affective assemblages that work to move, orient, and bind actors to reform agendas. The analysis follows the methodological strategy of “reading for affect” (Berg et al., 2019; Knudsen & Stage, 2015). First, close readings of textual and visual materials were conducted to identify vocabularies, phrases, images, graphs, and narrative devices that evoked particular affective intensities, such as hope, anxiety, urgency, or moral uplift. Second, through comparative readings across documents and media formats, the recurrence, movement, and accumulation of these affective elements were traced—for example, expressions such as “fundamental paradigm shift,” “customized learning,” and “growth for all.” Third, the analysis examined how these affective representations connected with different bodies in the policy texts, including subjects (teachers and students), institutions (schools), and objects (curriculum structures). Through such circulation, affective elements bind heterogeneous bodies together and produce trans-linguistic effects that extend beyond rhetorical persuasion. Analyzing affect inevitably involves the researcher’s embodied engagement with the data. Because affect is registered through sensations that call for response (Kølvraa, 2015), my positionality functions as both an analytical resource and a research instrument. Throughout the analysis, I reflexively attended to my own affective responses while examining how these intensities operate as political technologies that govern the thinking and conduct of policy actors in curriculum reform. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The HSCS policy texts circulate a complex affective configuration in which anxiety and fear coexist with hope and expectation to legitimize curriculum reform. Anxiety is activated through a rhetoric of crisis that foregrounds future societal challenges such as demographic decline and global competition, fostering a collective fear that failure to adapt will jeopardize the nation’s future. At the same time, these texts mobilize a rhetoric of innovation that frames the HSCS as an indispensable solution to systemic educational problems. This coupling of crisis and solution produces a sense of relief (McKenzie, 2017), encouraging policy actors to invest affectively in the reform. By linking key HSCS concepts—such as “customized curricula” and “student agency”—to universally valued ideals including inclusion, diversity, and growth, the policy renders the reform not only necessary but ethically compelling (Lähdesmäki et al., 2020). The political effect of these affective technologies lies in the normalization of new roles and responsibilities for teachers and students. Positioned as essential contributors to a “better future,” school actors are encouraged to desire conformity to these emerging norms (Moore & Clarke, 2016). Hope for improvement, coupled with anxiety about being perceived as incompetent or outdated, functions as a governing force that shapes conduct and subjectivity. Ultimately, these affective-discursive strategies bind heterogeneous bodies—teachers, students, parents, and curriculum structures—into a cohesive and optimistic atmosphere. While this dense circulation of positive affect secures commitment to reform, it simultaneously marginalizes critical reflection on structural issues, such as intensified academic competition, widening educational inequalities, and increased teacher workload. In this sense, the affective governance of the HSCS produces a form of optimistic attachment that may obscure the precarious and uneven realities of curriculum reform enactment. References Berg, A. Poster An Interpretivist Study of Peer Influence on the Mathematical Identity and Self-Concept of Post-Primary Students in Ireland. Maynooth University, Ireland Presenting Author:Context: Research has consistently demonstrated that parents, teachers, and curriculum structures influence students’ attitudes towards mathematics (Clerkin & Gilligan, 2018; Quaye & Pomeroy, 2021; Pocalana et al, 2023; O’Meara et al, 2022; Saadati et al, 2023; Connolly et al, 2021). However, comparatively little attention has been paid to the role of peer interactions in shaping students’ mathematical identities and self-concept as the curriculum is enacted in classrooms, particularly in Ireland. In Irish post-primary education, mathematics is a compulsory subject until the age of 18 or 19, and high-stakes assessment structures, including bonus points for Higher Level mathematics, position the subject as both valuable and anxiety-inducing (Prendergast et al, 2022). During this shared curricular experience, common global narratives such as “I hate maths” or “I was never any good at maths” persist among students and adults alike, suggesting that attitudes towards mathematics are socially produced and sustained. Amid new Senior Cycle Redevelopment, now more than ever, it is imperative that we explore peer influences on mathematical identity as we move towards a more student-centred approach to learning. While curriculum policy outlines intended learning outcomes, the lived curriculum emerges through everyday classroom interactions (Priestley, Biesta, & Robinson, 2015). Aim: The aim of this study is to capture student voice by exploring how peers interact during mathematical tasks and discussions, and how these interactions influence students’ mathematical identities and self-concept. A further aim is to explore how peer discourse shapes students’ confidence, self-belief, and sense of belonging in mathematics classrooms at a critical stage of early adolescence. To answer the question ‘How do peer interactions influence post-primary students’ self-belief and mathematical identities in the Irish education system?’ I will explore the concepts of identity, belonging, subjectivity, and self-concept. Drawing on Social Identity Theory and Social Learning Theory, this study addresses a gap in the literature by examining how peer interactions contribute to shared meanings about mathematical ability, confidence, and belonging as students engage with the mathematics curriculum (Tajfel & Turner, 1979). Findings: Data will be analysed using a combination of Reflexive Thematic Analysis and Narrative Inquiry to capture both spoken discourse and underlying identity positioning. Emerging insights demonstrate how peer talk, comparison, humour, and silence contribute to the construction of mathematical identities and shape narratives about mathematical ability, influencing students’ willingness to engage, take risks, or withdraw from mathematical activity. Implications: This study highlights the significance of peer culture as a powerful, yet often overlooked, influence on students’ mathematical confidence and identity formation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The Irish Context: In Ireland, compulsory education is from 4 to 16 years of age, with many students staying in education until 18/19 years to complete their Leaving Certificate examinations. Mathematics learning is a compulsory core subject throughout, with a common level course being completed in first year of post-primary and students then being streamed into higher and ordinary level at in second year. It is during this transition time from first to second year that a decline in mathematical interests can happen. Participants: In this ethnographic case study, underpinned by an interpretivist-pragmatic stance, three first year class groups will be observed in their timetables mathematics classes in a post-primary school in Ireland. Situated in a small town, the school has a rural catchment area resulting in a diverse student population. Based on student interactions, discussions, and engagements, eight focal students aged 12-14 years will be selected to participate further. All students will be familiar with each other as it is a small-town school. Data collection and analysis: Initial data collection will consist of detailed fieldnotes capturing peer interactions from the classroom observations over a period of six weeks. From these observations, eight focal participants will be selected to take part in focus groups. As focus groups can facilitate exploratory research and allow for opinions to bounce back and forth and be modified by the group (Frey & Fontana, 1991, p.178), it is hoped this will create a clearer picture of how peer influences can shape mathematical identities. During the focus group participates will work on different mathematical tasks and have discussions around mathematical prompts together and, once completed, findings will be triangulated through individual semi-structured interviews exploring students’ perceptions of their mathematical experiences and identities. Social Identity Theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) informs the analysis of belonging, comparison, and group positioning, Bandura’s Social Learning Theory supports examination of peer influence on self-efficacy and confidence (Bandura, 1986). Data will be analysed using reflexive thematic analysis and narrative inquiry. Implications: Findings may inform classroom practice, teacher education, and school policy by highlighting the need to recognise and shape peer dynamics in ways that disrupt negative mathematical narratives, challenge ability hierarchies, and support more inclusive participation in mathematics learning. Ethical considerations: Before collecting any data, ethical approval was sought from Maynooth University ethics committee and adhered to both the BERA code of ethics and the Teaching Council code of conduct. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings It is envisaged that this study will have theoretical and pedagogical implications. Theoretical implications involve a refined understanding of mathematical identities through student narratives; and pedagogical in that student narratives will inform the type of experiences that students enjoy together which will in turn inform teachers of best classroom practices and prompt discussions about what it means to be mathematical, challenging the negative narrative that exists currently around enjoying mathematics. Findings from the study may be significant in terms of the type of language that is used among peers when talking about mathematics and how this language can shape the identity that students carry with them into life ahead and the workforce. It is hoped that insights will be gained that will inform teachers, teacher educators, policy makers, and systems just what is needed to turn the tide on the negative discourse around mathematics and encourage an uptake in mathematics related careers for students in an Irish context. Poster Exploring the Problem Question “Water-Related Hazards” Through Phenomenon-Based Learning Nazarbayev Intellectual school of Science and Mathematics in Nauryzbay district of Almaty Presenting Author:In the context of modern education, the development of students’ functional literacy, critical thinking, research skills, and creativity is considered one of the key indicators of educational quality in the 21st century (OECD, 2018; Perkins, 2014). Traditional subject-based teaching methods are increasingly being supplemented by innovative pedagogical approaches that promote interdisciplinary learning and active student engagement (Freeman et al., 2014). Among such approaches, integrated teaching, team-based learning, and problem-based learning (PBL) play a significant role in shaping students’ holistic understanding of knowledge and preparing them for real-life challenges (Hmelo-Silver, 2004). This work examines the effectiveness of integrated lessons implemented through team-based learning and the PBL approach in developing students’ cognitive, research, and creative abilities. The study was conducted based on an integrated lesson titled “Water-Related Risks,” implemented within the educational practice of the Nazarbayev Intellectual Schools (NIS). The lesson was designed through interdisciplinary integration of Kazakh language, geography, homeroom studies, and arts, allowing students to explore the topic from multiple perspectives and connect academic knowledge with real-world phenomena (Beane, 1995). The application of the PBL approach involved engaging students in a structured research process that included identifying a problem, formulating hypotheses, collecting and analysing information, and proposing practical solutions(Savery, 2006). This process encouraged students to take an active role in learning, shifting them from passive recipients of information to independent researchers. As a result, students demonstrated improved critical thinking skills, the ability to analyse complex situations, and readiness to make reasoned decisions. Furthermore, problem-based tasks stimulated students’ creativity by motivating them to seek non-standard solutions and present their findings in various formats, such as presentations, visual materials, and creative projects (Perkins, 2014). The primary aim of the study was to determine the impact of integrated lessons combined with team-based and problem-based learning on the development of students’ cognitive, research, and creative competencies. The research focused on identifying how interdisciplinary learning influences students’ motivation, collaborative skills, and ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practical contexts (Beane, 1995; Le et al., 2018). Particular attention was given to teamwork, as collaborative learning environments adopt communication skills, responsibility, and mutual support among learners. The findings of the study indicate that integrated lessons significantly increase students’ engagement and interest in the learning process. Students actively participated in group discussions, demonstrated the ability to justify their opinions with evidence, and effectively collaborated to achieve common goals (Freeman et al.,2014). The interdisciplinary nature of the lesson contributed to a deeper understanding of the subject matter and promoted the transfer of knowledge across different academic domains. Moreover, the integration of creative tasks supported the development of students’ imagination, initiative, and self-expression, aligning with broader conceptions of twenty-first-century competencies (OECD, 2018; Perkins, 2014). However, as a classroom-based case study conducted with a single Grade 8 cohort in one school, the findings have limited generalisability. In conclusion, the results confirm that integrated teaching combined with team-based learning and the PBL approach is an effective pedagogical strategy for improving the quality of education. This approach not only develops academic achievement but also contributes to the formation of essential 21st-century skills, including critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving (OECD, 2018). Therefore, integrated lessons can be considered a valuable tool for improving students’ comprehensive development and preparing them for the demands of modern society. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The methodology of this study was developed to organise integrated lessons and systematically evaluate their impact on the development of students’ cognitive, research, and creative competencies. The research was practical in nature and based on data collected during the implementation of a specific interdisciplinary lesson. The participants of the study were 8th-grade students, and the subjects involved included Kazakh language, geography, homeroom activities, and arts. Integrating these subjects enabled interdisciplinary connections and allowed students to explore the chosen topic from multiple perspectives, promoting a holistic understanding of knowledge and increasing their ability to apply learning to real-world situations (Beane, 1995). The research process consisted of multiple stages. In the first stage, teacher-researchers designed lesson plans, identified common topics and problem areas, and defined the objectives and tasks of the lesson. The lesson was organised around the theme “Water-Related Risks,” which is directly relevant to students’ everyday experiences and contributes to the development of safety awareness, analytical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills (OECD, 2018; Perkins, 2014). The planning process also included the alignment of lesson objectives with the curriculum requirements and learning outcomes across the integrated subjects. During the second stage, students worked in four inquiry groups to map high-risk water areas, develop a safety booklet, create a text-based role-play on problem-solving, and investigate additional water-related hazards for presentation. One teacher facilitated the lesson, while the other observed, documented engagement, and provided formative feedback (Freeman et al., 2014). In the third stage, data was collected and analysed. Students’ outputs included maps, booklets, presentations, and role-playing performances, which were examined to evaluate the development of research. In addition, observational checklists, descriptor-based assessments, and group self-assessment were employed to assess participation, collaboration, and individual contribution, to understand students’ engagement and learning progress(Le et al., 2018). The next stage focused on reflection. Students evaluated their own experiences, identified newly developed skills, discussed challenges, and analysed their effectiveness within the group. Teachers also conducted a critical review of the lesson, highlighting strengths and areas for improvement, and offered recommendations for future lesson planning. This methodology proved highly effective in active research, linking theoretical knowledge with practical applications and developing critical and creative thinking. Team-based and integrated approaches strengthened teacher collaboration, allowing joint planning, assessment, and teaching strategies. Overall, this methodological framework ensured high levels of student participation, promoted interdisciplinary understanding, and supported the attainment of meaningful learning outcomes. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The results of this study indicate that integrated lessons and team-based learning methods effectively promote the comprehensive development of students’ cognitive, research, creative, and social skills (Gillies, 2016). During the “Water-Related Risks” lesson, students addressed authentic problems through group and individual tasks, applying theoretical knowledge in practical contexts. They tested hypotheses, compared sources, drew evidence-based conclusions, and justified recommendations, strengthening critical thinking, logical reasoning, and analytical skills associated with inquiry-based learning (Freeman et al.,2014; Hmelo-Silver,2004). Team-based learning also developed teacher collaboration through joint planning and coordinated delivery, while students clarified roles, shared responsibilities, communicated effectively, and made collective decisions(Michaelsen et al., 2011). Through the PBL model, learners acted as active researchers and developed life-relevant skills in risk evaluation, prevention, and emergency response. In conclusion, this study indicates that integrated lessons contribute to the development of students’ cognitive, research, and creative capacities, while also enhancing teacher collaboration through joint lesson planning and coordinated instructional design (Beane, 1995). By connecting theoretical content with practical application, such lessons support the acquisition of relevant real-life skills and promote the growth of social and communicative competence through sustained interaction and shared responsibility (Gillies,2016; OECD,2018). The integrated format further strengthens learners’ problem-solving and decision-making abilities by requiring them to analyse complex situations, evaluate evidence, and justify choices, thereby advancing critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and independent inquiry (Hmelo-Silver, 2004). Collectively, these outcomes suggest that integrated instruction is a productive pedagogical approach for cultivating key competencies associated with twenty-first-century learning (OECD, 2018). Thus, integrated lessons and team-based learning serve as effective pedagogical tools for comprehensive student development, fostering practical and life skills, as well as critical and creative thinking. Poster Articulating Curriculum with Children: Joy as a Diagnostic of Curriculum-in-Practice 1: Anglia Ruskin University, United Kingdom; 2: Anglia Ruskin University, United Kingdom Presenting Author:Contemporary education policy often invokes “enjoyment” as though it were self-evident: a feature of learning assumed to support attainment. Yet this language is frequently instrumental and conceptually thin (Connolly, 2013, 2019). In England, “enjoyment” appears sporadically and tends to be positioned as a means to other ends; it offers little guidance on what enjoyment requires in practice (i.e., time, trust, creativity) (Connolly, 2013, 2019; DfE, 2011, 2014; Ofsted, 2019). It can also sit awkwardly inside measurement-driven accountability cultures in which performing the “right” affect becomes part of being recognised as successful (Ball, 2003; Connolly, 2019). This poster presents findings from one strand of the broader Articulating Curriculum with Children project, focusing specifically on how young people conceptualise joy in relation to curriculum. Rather than treating joy as an individual emotional state or enrichment feature, we position it as a curricular question: a way of examining what curriculum-in-practice enables, constrains, and makes possible. Conceptually, our work draws on curriculum-as-social-practice (curriculum not as a static “plan” but as something enacted through agency and relations; Priestley, 2011), and on student voice/democratic participation traditions that take seriously children's roles in educational discourse and decision-making (UN General Assembly, 1989; Robinson & Taylor, 2007), including “radical collegiality” (Fielding, 2001). We also draw on care ethics (Noddings, 2005) and engagement-oriented accounts of learning (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990) to understand joy as relational: an environmental quality marked by trust, cooperation, and imaginative possibility. The overarching questions that this project explored include: 1) how children conceptualise “curriculum” and what they think curriculum should fundamentally include; and 2) what students reveal (conceptually and practically) when invited into speculative “what if” curriculum design through creative workshop methods (Costello, 2023). Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This was a qualitative study, seeking subjective and contextual perspectives from children through group interviews incorporating arts-based methods to inspire deeper discussion and creative ideas. The arts-based methods were designed in collaboration between artists and research team members. Institutional ethical consent was granted, in line with BERA guidelines in the UK. We generated data with three different educational settings, making three visits to each setting as follows: To introduce the project, and to discuss consent and ethics; To explore the meaning of curriculum in each setting using arts-based and creative methods; and To carry out a group interview to talk about emerging findings from previous visits, and to develop discussions about what matters to children in curricula and schools, and what might be important to include in a curriculum that recognises the importance of joy in learning. The settings included one state school following a traditional English Curriculum, one setting that worked with home-schooled children, and one setting that followed an alternative curriculum. In each setting we worked with between 6 and 8 students (total 20 participants) aged between 12 and 14 years old. Common data collection protocols were maintained across all sites, with minor adaptations to take account of contexts. Data were transcribed and subjected to dual coding involving regular intercoder reliability and team sense-making discussions. Where possible we may return to settings again to engage in further discussions of emerging findings. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Across settings, young people framed joy as relational rather than individualistic: it was located in belonging, trust, and shared activity, rather than in isolated “fun” moments. Participants resisted narrow definitions of curriculum as a content list, describing curriculum instead as lived experience (i.e., through metaphors of journeys, choices, and environments), suggesting curriculum is encountered as a set of conditions shaping daily life and learning, not only specifications and plans. Our analysis identified seven cross-setting themes, with shifts in emphasis illuminating how curriculum-in-practice shapes joy. Social connection moved from affective belonging and emotional safety, through implicit collaboration, to more functional peer learning that “helps ideas develop faster”. Agency strengthened across settings: participants critiqued control and argued for choice, and, when invited to redesign learning through “if you were in charge” prompts, made confident proposals that position them as curriculum makers. Across settings, students emphasised being present in the curriculum and how it is designed: not only experiencing it but actively shaping it. Joy was repeatedly associated with creativity and self-exploration without fear of judgement; art and making were described as spaces where exploration was protected from performance pressures. Life skills became increasingly salient, indicating that joy is not opposed to usefulness but often linked to learning relevant beyond school. Participants consistently raised rhythm and balance, resisting schooling that totalises and arguing for family life and rest, space - framing joy as a matter of humane time. Taken together, these emerging findings position joy as a diagnostic of curriculum conditions: young people’s accounts make visible what gets compressed when schooling is organised around constant measurement, and what becomes possible when care, agency, creativity, and humane time are designed in (Ball, 2003; Connolly, 2019). We distil these insights into child-derived curriculum design principles and reflective prompts for identifying joy-supporting and joy-eroding features of curriculum-in-practice. References Ball, S. Within education systems, the capacity to collect, interpret, analyse, and ethically use data is essential for civic participation and for enabling students and educators to make evidence‑based judgments and decisions. Although related to statistical, digital, information, and AI literacies, scholarship contends that data literacy is distinctive because it integrates technical, cognitive, ethical, and communicative dimensions oriented toward purposeful uses of data in authentic contexts (Wolff et al., 2016; Knaflic, 2020). In schools, this conception goes beyond reading graphs and tables to encompass the formulation of meaningful questions, the production and curation of data, the critical appraisal of evidence, analytical decision‑making, and the ethical communication of findings. It also demands vigilance regarding risks of misuse—including surveillance, bias, stigmatisation, and inequality reproduction—highlighted in critical accounts of educational datafication (Mandinach & Gummer, 2016; Prinsloo & Slade, 2017; Williamson, 2017). In Portugal, curricular reforms over the past decade have emphasised transversal competencies, interdisciplinarity, and project‑based pedagogies. Nevertheless, data‑related competencies remain unevenly distributed across subjects and cycles and often appear implicitly or as subordinate elements within Mathematics and Science. While the label ‘data literacy’ is rarely explicit in national curriculum documents, aligned practices and learning goals are visible at multiple levels—from early exploratory activities to formal statistical study in upper secondary—and are consolidating through pedagogical innovation initiatives, including the pilot subject ‘Literacies and Data.’ This landscape justifies a focused inquiry into how data literacy is conceptualised and embedded in the curriculum as written, and how it is understood and enacted by educational actors in everyday practice. To guide this inquiry, the study poses two research questions that reflect its dual emphasis on curricular framing and practitioner perspectives: first, how and where data‑literacy‑related competencies are embedded—explicitly and implicitly—within Portugal’s compulsory education curriculum; and second, how teachers, school leaders, and other educational actors understand data literacy and perceive their readiness, practices, and challenges related to its implementation. Together, these questions connect system expectations with lived practices in schools, providing a lens to identify convergences, gaps, and opportunities for more systematic integration. Conceptually, the study adopts a theoretical framework that synthesises three strands. The first is a multidimensional view of data literacy integrating domains as technical (collection, analysis, visualisation), cognitive‑critical (interpretation, argumentation), communicative (including data storytelling), ethical‑civic (privacy, fairness, accountability), oriented to authentic tasks and contexts (Wolff et al., 2016; Knaflic, 2020). The second draws on research into data‑informed educational decision‑making, which shows that educators’ engagement with data depends on professional knowledge, collaborative cultures, leadership, time, and tools; it distinguishes mere access to data from meaningful, practice‑proximal use that supports assessment, pedagogical differentiation, and school improvement (Datnow & Park, 2018; Mandinach & Gummer, 2016). The third incorporates insights from critical data studies, foregrounding ethical and justice‑oriented dimensions, supporting the systematic inclusion of privacy, transparency, and accountability (Prinsloo & Slade, 2017; Williamson, 2017). By integrating these strands, the study conceptualises data literacy as a cross‑curricular, pedagogical, and ethical priority whose coherent progression depends on clear curricular expectations, practice‑proximal professional learning, and supportive organisational conditions. Situated within DATA‑READY (Empowering Education through Data Literacy Integration in Compulsory Education), ERASMUS-EDU-2024-POL-EXP-DIGITAL, No. 101195801, an European project that aims to develop a European Framework for Data Literacy to guide curriculum planning, teacher education, and inclusive educational policies, the present investigation examines the Portuguese case. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study adopted a convergent mixed methods design, combining a documentary analysis of key curriculum and policy documents with an online survey of educational actors. The two strands were conducted in parallel and integrated through triangulation and joint displays, which enabled a systematic alignment between prescribed curriculum expectations and the perceptions, practices, and needs reported by practitioners. This design provided a macro level perspective anchored in official texts and a meso/micro level perspective grounded in the lived experiences of teachers, school leaders, and specialist staff across educational levels and disciplinary areas. The documentary analysis drew on a corpus that included the Profile of Students at the End of Compulsory Schooling, the Essential Learnings, disciplinary syllabi and programmes, citizenship frameworks, digital education guidance, and relevant decrees and policy notes issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation (MECI). From this corpus, we developed a deductive–inductive coding scheme covering the core dimensions of data literacy. In parallel, an online survey to teachers from grades 1–12, school leaders and specialist professionals was designed and administered. Sampling combined convenience and snowball approaches to secure diversity across regions, levels, and subjects. The instrument comprised sections on professional profile, conceptual understanding of data literacy, perceived readiness in knowledge and skills, current data use in pedagogy, assessment and school processes, attitudes and ethical concerns, perceptions of curricular integration and implementation conditions, as well as obstacles, supports, and examples of promising practices. Quantitative analyses were limited to descriptive statistics and group comparisons, reporting frequencies, measures of central tendency and dispersion, and between group differences by level of schooling, subject area, and role. Qualitative analysis applied thematic coding to open ended responses and policy texts, aligning categories with the data literacy framework and explicitly attending to ethical and justice related dimensions. Integration of the two datasets was achieved through joint displays juxtaposing curricular maps with participants’ perceptions and practices, which made visible convergences, tensions, gaps, and opportunities for improvement. The integrated synthesis underpinned actionable recommendations for policy, curriculum design, and teacher professional development, including organisational conditions. Ethical procedures included voluntary participation with informed consent, pseudonymisation, secure storage, and compliance with GDPR principles of data minimisation, confidentiality, and transparency. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The study produced an integrated account of how data literacy is positioned across Portugal’s compulsory education by combining curricular analysis with educators’ perceptions and practices. Documentary evidence showed system wide presence but uneven distribution of data related competencies, with clearer articulation in Mathematics, Sciences, and selected upper secondary pathways. Early childhood and primary education included data experiences—counting, organising information, simple surveys—yet often without explicit conceptual framing as “data literacy.” Cross disciplinary connections appeared in guidance and school level initiatives but lacked coherent progression across cycles. Survey results indicated that educators strongly valued data literacy for fostering critical thinking, informed citizenship, and resilience to misinformation. However, self reported preparedness was moderate: confidence tended to be higher in descriptive statistics and lower in visualisation, data storytelling, and ethical legal aspects. Practices were more established in assessment and internal monitoring than in student led inquiry or the use of authentic, locally sourced data in project based learning. Recurring barriers included limited time, scarce opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, uneven resource availability, and the absence of explicit assessment tools and progression criteria. Conversely, sustained professional development tied to authentic tasks, supportive leadership, collaborative structures and access to usable datasets and tools emerged as key enablers. Triangulating the strands revealed tensions between curricular ambition and teachers’ perceived readiness, uneven articulation of interdisciplinary work, and ambiguity over roles and responsibilities for addressing ethics, privacy, and data justice in everyday teaching. At the same time, the study documented promising practices—co teaching between subject teachers and school librarians, integration within environmental and citizenship education, student surveys, and the use of local media and open data to build statistical reasoning—illustrating feasible pathways for scaling. Poster The Impact of “Creating a Language Environment” Project on the Speaking Skills of Students Learning Kazakh as a Second Language 1: Nazarbayev Intellectual School, Kazakhstan; 2: Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Kokshetau, Kazakhstan Presenting Author:The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of the “Creating a Language Environment” project implemented at the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in Kokshetau on the development of speaking skills among students learning Kazakh as a second language. The project was designed as a school-wide initiative aimed at increasing students’ exposure to Kazakh and encouraging its use beyond the classroom through structured and semi-structured activities. The main research question guiding this study is: To what extent can the “Creating a Language Environment” project contribute to the development of students’ speaking skills in Kazakh as a second language? To address this question, the study explores three sub-questions: (1) how the project influences specific aspects of speaking skills, including fluency, vocabulary expansion, and the reduction of psychological barriers during public speaking; (2) which components of the language environment—such as Baskatyrgysh (Puzzles), Karaoke Time, Oqy Laid (Read Aloud), Kinotime (Movie Time), and Khabardar Bol (Stay Informed)—are most effective in motivating students to speak Kazakh; and (3) which factors should be considered when applying the findings of this study in other school contexts. The relevance of this study lies in its focus on the role of a school-wide language environment in second language acquisition. International research has consistently shown that a rich language environment provides learners with comprehensible input and opportunities for meaningful interaction, both of which are essential for developing oral communication skills. In recent years, studies in linguistic landscape and schoolscape research have expanded this perspective by conceptualizing the school space as a holistic language resource. These studies demonstrate that visual displays, informal communication, extracurricular activities, and overall school culture increase learners’ exposure to the target language and encourage its use in authentic contexts. However, most existing research has been conducted in contexts where English or other European languages are taught as second languages. In contrast, the teaching of Kazakh as a second language has received limited attention from the perspective of school-wide language environments. In Kazakhstani methodological literature, research predominantly focuses on classroom-based instructional approaches, while empirical studies that examine the entire school space as a language-learning environment remain scarce. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating a structured, context-specific project implemented in a Kazakhstani school setting. The theoretical framework of the study draws on key concepts in second language acquisition. Long’s Interaction Hypothesis emphasizes that speaking skills develop through interaction that requires learners to negotiate meaning, ask for clarification, and reformulate their utterances. Such interaction enables learners to notice gaps in their language knowledge and refine their oral production. Swain’s Output Hypothesis further highlights speaking as a driving force in language development, arguing that learners develop linguistic accuracy and complexity when they attempt to express meaning and encounter limitations in their language resources. From this perspective, errors are viewed as a natural and productive part of the learning process. Krashen’s Input Hypothesis complements these views by stressing the importance of comprehensible input slightly above learners’ current proficiency level (i+1). His concept of the affective filter underscores the psychological dimension of language learning, suggesting that low anxiety and a supportive environment facilitate more effective language acquisition. Together, these theories support the idea that a well-designed language environment should provide meaningful input, encourage active output, and reduce learners’ fear of making mistakes. This study applies these principles to evaluate the effectiveness of a school-wide language environment in developing students’ speaking skills in Kazakh. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Research Design This study employed a mixed-methods research design, with qualitative data as the primary source and quantitative data used to support contextual analysis. The research was conducted as a qualitative case study, allowing an in-depth examination of how a school-organized language environment, implemented through teachers’ pedagogical practices, influences students’ speaking skills development in Kazakh as a second language. This was chosen to capture both the complexity of the educational context and participants’ lived experiences within. Participants and Sampling The research site was the Nazarbayev Intellectual School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Kokshetau. This setting was selected due to the linguistic characteristics of the northern region of Kazakhstan, where the everyday use of Kazakh is limited, creating additional challenges for students learning Kazakh as a second language. These challenges are reflected in students’ academic performance in Kazakh-medium subjects and in regional external summative assessment results. Participants were selected through purposive sampling and included students in grades 7–9 learning Kazakh as a second language, Kazakh language teachers, school administrators, coordinators/curators, one representative from each methodological association fluent in Kazakh, and specialists in music and dombra. School support staff (psychologists, cafeteria workers, cleaners, security guards, and nurses) were not treated as direct data sources but were considered contributors to the school language environment. Data Collection Methods Both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods were used. At the initial stage, an entry survey was administered to students to identify their proficiency level in Kazakh, language difficulties, attitudes toward subjects taught in Kazakh, and perceived support needs. These data provided contextual background and informed the qualitative phase. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom and school environment observations, and analysis of students’ oral tasks. Interviews were conducted with all active participants, lasted 20–30 minutes, and were repeated with some participants to gain deeper insights. Observations focused on lessons conducted in Kazakh (Kazakh language, History of Kazakhstan, and Geography) and extracurricular settings, using a structured checklist to record language use, interaction patterns, and student engagement. Students’ oral tasks completed before and after the project were comparatively analyzed. Data Analysis and Ethics Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis through systematic coding of interview transcripts, observation notes, student work. Triangulation across data sources enhanced the credibility of the findings. All ethical requirements were met: participants provided informed consent, anonymity and confidentiality were ensured, and the research did not disrupt the educational process. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Personal Interviews Data showed school community members are familiar with the concept of creating a language environment; however, its implementation remains inconsistent, largely dependent on teacher initiative. Researchers identified lack of time, absence of clear organizational mechanisms, and insufficient coordination as major barriers. A recurring theme was students’ difficulty speaking Kazakh, which teachers linked to both limited language exposure and psychological factors: fear of making mistakes and low confidence. These affective barriers reduced students’ willingness to participate orally. Classroom Observations Observations at the beginning revealed that students avoided speaking Kazakh, produced short and formulaic responses, frequently switched to another language during peer interaction. Language support strategies were applied inconsistently. In contrast, observations during and at the end of the project showed noticeable improvement: students answered more confidently in Kazakh, participated more actively in group discussions, and made greater efforts to express their ideas. Teachers used language support strategies more consciously, contributing to increased speaking activity. Students’ Written Work Analysis Comparative analysis of students’ written work showed positive changes by the end of the project. Many students were able to express ideas more freely in Kazakh, and their writing reflected content discussed orally in groups. Nevertheless, progress was uneven. Some students demonstrated slower development and continued to struggle with maintaining focus and expanding ideas, indicating that outcomes were influenced by learners’ initial proficiency levels and psychological readiness. Conclusion The findings indicate that a systematically organized school-wide language environment positively influences speaking skills development among students learning Kazakh as a second language. Such an environment reduces psychological barriers and increases learners’ confidence and willingness to speak. While the effects varied by student, the initiative was a successful teaching strategy that supported linguistic development and psychological comfort. In response to ongoing changes across all spheres of society, the education system is undergoing significant modernization. The primary task of teachers today is to provide high-quality education, which requires not only professional competence but also leadership, organizational, and innovative skills. Enhancing the professional activity of leading teachers is now a key focus, providing them with opportunities for self-development and the ability to implement new ideas through collaboration with motivated colleagues. This approach allows teachers to improve their knowledge and skills, even without holding formal leadership positions, by continuously studying innovations and integrating effective methods and techniques into their practice. Modern educational methodology emphasizes planning lessons and curricula to ensure the quality of student knowledge. In this context, students actively participate in building their knowledge and mastering skills, reflecting the constructivist approach, while teachers guide and direct learning toward achieving the objectives of the discipline. Teacher professional growth occurs through active participation in research, experimentation with innovative methods, and reflection on practice. Action Research is a key tool for improving teacher knowledge and research activity. In this process, teachers collaboratively plan lessons around identified problems, set expected outcomes, monitor and analyze lesson results, gather student feedback, and adjust teaching strategies accordingly. Such activities foster teamwork, trust, respect, and mutual support among colleagues, while promoting the adoption of innovative methods and the improvement of pedagogical practice. The purpose of professional cooperation is to integrate theory and practice, exchange new ideas, and implement changes in teaching. Expected outcomes include increased research activity, joint lesson planning and teaching, systematic lesson monitoring, collection and analysis of data, discussion of results, adjustment of practices, and sharing of findings. This collaboration establishes professional networks, organizes joint seminars and training, and fosters continuous professional development. To ensure professional continuity, teachers need to create an environment conducive to collaboration, sharing of teaching experiences, and collective problem-solving. In our experience, this began with forming a scientific community of teachers, developing an organizational plan, defining key groups and contacts, and establishing clear objectives and research topics. Steps included selecting participants, clarifying expected outcomes, and setting timelines for research activities. During lesson planning and analysis, we adhered to principles such as: choosing methods and techniques aligned with the identified problem, searching for solutions to unresolved questions, ensuring rational lesson design, maintaining trust and cooperation, reflecting on outcomes, accepting and providing constructive feedback, motivating students, and fostering idea generation. Historically, Action Research has been recognized since the mid-20th century, with Kurt Lewin describing it as a combined approach of research, action, and problem-solving. It provides a modern framework for teachers to assess and improve their own practice. Depending on the scope, Action Research can involve individual teachers, groups, or entire institutions. Its essence lies in the professional growth of teachers through the practical resolution of specific challenges encountered in the teaching process. In conclusion, professional cooperation through Action Research allows teachers to enhance their skills, adopt innovative methods, improve lesson quality, and foster collaborative problem-solving. This approach strengthens teacher research activity, develops new strategies, and contributes to high-quality education. By engaging in continuous reflection, planning, and collaborative practice, teachers create a dynamic environment that benefits both professional development and student learning outcomes. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used Our scientific community was formed as a collaborative research group between the teaching staff of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University and teachers from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School. The study focused on topics selected according to several criteria: relevance, alignment of research questions with SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, meaningful, and time-bound), clarity of formulation, and practical significance. In conducting Action Research, we followed the six steps outlined by Walters-Adams: defining the research problem, collecting data, interpreting the data, applying insights to practice, evaluating outcomes, and planning subsequent steps. At the first stage, data such as student answer sheets, observation records, questionnaires, and lesson feedback were collected and analyzed, taking into account student abilities. Effectiveness was evaluated by comparing results at the initial and control stages. During the second stage, teachers identified optimal teaching methods, applied best practices in joint lesson planning and instruction, and emphasized psychological and pedagogical experience. Experience sharing and collaborative re-planning were key components at this stage. At the third stage, teachers focused on developing professional skills, applying findings through data analysis, surveys, and diagnostic research, and refining their practice accordingly. Throughout the study, participants engaged in professional actions such as exchanging ideas, consulting colleagues, presenting proposals, actively listening, taking responsibility within the group, showing respect, adhering to group norms, learning from peers, critically evaluating their own experience, assisting team members, reviewing relevant literature, and disseminating results at pedagogical councils and meetings, including publications. This collaborative approach allowed teachers to implement meaningful changes in their practice. The group, composed of both experienced educators and young specialists, benefited from a mutual balance: experienced teachers shared their expertise, while younger specialists contributed fresh perspectives. The key steps of our Action Research included defining research topics, identifying and addressing obstacles, collecting and analyzing data, implementing changes in practice, and summarizing results for future planning. Joint lesson planning, instruction, monitoring, and analysis strengthened teachers’ professional skills and enhanced their practical and scientific experience. As a result, our scientific community achieved measurable outcomes in a short time: engaging in active research, improving teaching practices and student learning outcomes, sharing new ideas and methods, publishing research findings, fostering professional development, and strengthening collaborative work among teachers. This model demonstrates the practical and scientific value of structured professional cooperation. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Based on the study, it was determined that professional development of teachers includes several key aspects: identifying and addressing barriers to teaching and learning, clarifying goals and methods for their achievement, differentiating scientific, methodological, and diagnostic tools, forecasting expected outcomes, and improving pedagogical skills. Teachers actively participated in the research process, collaborating and reflecting on their practice. As a result, each teacher implemented changes in their teaching, enhancing both their professional skills and research capabilities. The collaborative nature of the study created conditions for students to receive high-quality education, while also fostering teachers’ abilities to plan, analyze, and refine instructional strategies. A central focus of the research was increasing students’ engagement through innovative methods and techniques. The study revealed that students developed a range of competencies, including motivation to learn, improved academic performance, teamwork skills, responsibility, public speaking, self-assessment, peer evaluation, mutual support, self-criticism, activity analysis, and error detection and correction. To disseminate the results, a “Festival of Ideas” was organized at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University during the Day of Science. Students who participated in action research courses, alongside teachers from the Nazarbayev Intellectual School in chemistry and biology, presented posters and shared their experiences. The research highlighted key characteristics of effective action research: active participation, identification of shared problems, selection and application of effective methods, data analysis and discussion, reflective evaluation, and re-planning to improve teaching outcomes. The implementation of innovative approaches in practice demonstrated a positive impact on the quality of the educational process, enabling the integration of new projects, effective management, creation of independent development plans, and enhancement of teachers’ research activity. This experience confirms that professional cooperation in a research-oriented community supports continuous growth, exchange of experience, and practical application of innovations in teaching. Poster Designing for Transfer: How Semantic Waves Mediate Principles–Cases Transitions in Civic Education Textbooks National Taichung University of Education, Taiwan Presenting Author:A central challenge in civic and legal education lies in enabling learners to move flexibly between abstract legal principles and concrete cases. International research identifies this movement—often termed the “transfer bottleneck”—as a persistent barrier in students’ legal reasoning, particularly when textbooks provide dense conceptual definitions but limited epistemic pathways for repacking knowledge. From a subject-didactics perspective, this study examines how semantic waves, as conceptualised in Legitimation Code Theory (LCT), mediate these transitions in high-school civic education textbooks. While Taiwanese civic education curricula emphasise authentic problem-solving and the integration of principles with real-world contexts, little is known about how the authorised textbooks actually organise legal knowledge to support such transitions. The present study addresses this gap by mapping semantic gravity (SG) and semantic density (SD) shifts within the Legal Domain units of four major textbook publishers—Nani, Hanlin, Lungteng, and Sanmin—in Volume II of the national curriculum. The study is guided by three research questions: (1) How do civic education textbooks structure the movement between legal principles and cases through SG/SD variations? (2) What semantic wave patterns characterise the Legal Domain explanations across different publishers? (3) How do these patterns enable or inhibit knowledge transfer, particularly the upward movement required for repacking legal concepts? These questions are situated within broader discussions in ECER 2026’s theme, “Knowing and Acting,” by examining how curricular artefacts shape the epistemic conditions under which students can act with disciplinary knowledge. Theoretically, the study draws on LCT’s semantic dimension (Maton, 2013), which conceptualises how knowledge is strengthened or weakened in abstraction and density. Semantic waves—oscillations between SG+/SD− and SG−/SD+—are considered necessary for learners to connect context-free knowledge with context-dependent situations. Prior studies have applied semantic analysis to science, history, and higher education but seldom to civic and legal textbooks. Legal knowledge, characterised by high abstraction and layered reasoning, provides a rich site for operationalising semantic movements and identifying structural barriers to transfer. Preliminary analysis across the four publishers reveals a dominant pattern of downward semantic waves: textbooks frequently begin with decontextualised principles (e.g., rule-of-law values, constitutional protections), descend into simplified or illustrative cases, yet rarely return upward to re-generalise the concepts. In other words, legal knowledge often ends in “case-bound” explanations that illustrate but do not reconstruct conceptual understanding. While this downward movement can support initial contextualisation, the absence of upward repacking limits students’ ability to apply principles to novel situations. Such patterns may inadvertently reinforce rote reading of examples rather than cultivating flexible legal reasoning. This study contributes to curriculum theory and textbook research by identifying how authorised civic textbooks structure epistemic access to legal reasoning. It also offers methodological contributions through a systematic SG/SD coding scheme adaptable to comparative textbook studies. Practically, the findings inform the design of principle-case instructional cycles, suggesting ways to strengthen upward movements to support transfer. In line with the “Knowing and Acting” theme, the study argues that attention to semantic design is crucial for building curricular materials that enable learners to act with disciplinary knowledge, not merely recognise definitions. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts an LCT-informed semantic analysis to examine how civic education textbooks organise transitions between legal principles and cases. The research materials comprise the Legal Domain units from Volume II of four widely used Taiwanese civic education textbook series (Nani, Hanlin, Lungteng, and Sanmin). These units cover key legal concepts such as constitutional rights, civil and criminal law basics, due process, and legal responsibilities. They were selected because they represent the most conceptually dense and reasoning-intensive content within the secondary civic curriculum. Analytical procedures follow a three-stage SG/SD mapping approach. First, all core explanatory paragraphs were segmented into semantic units based on shifts in topic, function, or reasoning. Each unit was then coded for semantic gravity (SG) and semantic density (SD) using a calibrated four-level scale (from SG−/SD+ to SG+/SD−), allowing fine-grained identification of abstraction and contextualisation. Coding reliability was enhanced through iterative refinement of indicators, including lexical cues, epistemic functions (definition, rule articulation, application, justification), and conceptual relations. This produced semantic profiles for each publisher, enabling cross-text comparison. Second, wave patterns were identified by examining SG/SD trajectories across sequences of semantic units. Following Maton’s framework, three ideal-type patterns were used as analytical heuristics: (a) High Semantic Flatline (HSF), where explanations remain highly abstract with minimal contextual grounding; (b) Case-Bound Oscillation (CBO), where explanations remain situated in examples without reconstructing principles; and (c) U-Shaped Waves (USW), where moves from abstract principles downward to concrete cases and upward again to generalisable understanding are evident. Emphasis was placed on detecting the presence, frequency, and structural placement of each pattern. Third, cross-publisher comparisons were conducted to detect convergent or divergent semantic designs. Special attention was given to transitions between legal principles (e.g., proportionality, rights limitations, mens rea) and textbook-provided cases. The analysis also considered how tasks, diagrams, and boxed examples contributed to or disrupted semantic coherence. The methodological design enables identification of both micro-level textual movements and macro-level pedagogical patterns, providing insight into how textbooks mediate epistemic access to legal reasoning. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Across all four textbook series, the analysis reveals a predominance of downward semantic waves: explanations often begin with abstract legal principles and descend into concrete examples, but seldom rise back to re-abstract and integrate the cases. This pattern indicates limited upward repacking, suggesting that while contextualisation is present, opportunities for deep conceptual consolidation are weak. Such downward-only movements may restrict students' ability to generalise beyond the textbook cases and to apply principles flexibly to unfamiliar scenarios—a critical component of legal reasoning. Only sporadic instances of U-shaped waves were observed, primarily in isolated sections where principles were explicitly revisited after case illustrations. However, these instances lacked systematic placement and were insufficient to counterbalance the dominant case-bound structure. The absence of robust upward movement may reinforce surface-level understanding and impede learners from constructing portable disciplinary knowledge, echoing international concerns regarding the transfer bottleneck in civic and legal education. The study’s findings highlight the need for more intentional semantic design in textbook development. Strengthening upward movements—through summarising principles, articulating generalisable criteria, or integrating multiple cases—could better support transfer. For curriculum designers, this suggests that explicit attention to the semantic architecture of explanations is essential for promoting epistemic access. In relation to ECER 2026’s theme, the results underscore how curricular artefacts shape the conditions under which students move from knowing to acting with legal knowledge.
