Paper Talking about Collaborative Structures for Teacher Professional Development in Science Education 1: University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg; 2: University of Coimbra, Portugal Presenting Author:This contribution examines the different levels of collaboration between the fields of research and practice. By exploring a researcher-teacher collaboration in Luxembourg and collaborative structures from project in Portugal, we outline different features and conditions for collaboration. Considering that both case studies take role in established partnerships, a multi-faceted analysis will unveil multiple structures of collaborations. The studies presented here examine how partnerships can foster professional development, organizational learning, and pedagogical improvement across various contexts, contemplating both pre-service and in-service teacher education within science teacher professional learning. The case of Luxembourg explores a teacher-researcher collaboration that focused on co-developing, co-teaching and co-researching a professional development offering about the dialogue between science and language. The researcher and the teacher take part of a school-university partnership, the SciTeach Center – University of Luxembourg, which is a collaborative structure that provides professional learning opportunities for other primary science teachers in Luxembourg. Through this study, the starting point is that the SciTeach Center is acknowledged as a collaborative space where teachers and researchers come together and engage in dialogue; previous research has looked how team collaboration is fostered by a reflect-dialogue-act structure. Therefore, drawing from data that permits to look from the individual to the organizational level, this contribution aims to present what elements have enabled the teacher-researcher collaboration, by exploring a multi-layered structure of collaboration considering the processes of boundary spanning, third space, cogenerative dialogue, distributed leadership, community of practice, professional learning and ethics of care. For the case of Portugal, this contribution explores collaborative structures that promote professional growth, examining partnerships between researchers and educators, looking into the intersection of research and teaching. This plays a crucial role in shaping effective educational practices and fostering teacher continuous professional development. We analyze how these structures support inquiry-based teaching, reflective practice, and pedagogical innovation. The study is based on a qualitative analysis of multiple projects that involve research-practice collaboration in teacher education (e.g., AutoSTEM, Science2Edu). Other following initiatives, such as Prometon (which focuses on metacognition and Theory of Mind) and GEO-Academy (which develops digital and green competencies), demonstrate the impact of structured collaboration on teacher agency and instructional innovation. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used With the aim to present collaborative structures and partnerships that emerge in science teacher education in the different contexts, researchers from Luxembourg and Portugal will be able to address two overarching questions: 1. What are the findings about collaboration and partnership from research conducted in Luxembourg and Portugal?; and 2. How do these structures support science teacher professional development?. The fact that datasets include different levels of collaboration (individual, community, international), we expect to open a discussion towards acknowledging different collaborative structures and future collaboration between the involved researchers and the audience, through planning scientific exchange and future projects and publications. In the case of Luxembourg, by seeking to answer the question "What elements of the umbrella partnership supports the teacher-research collaboration?", this collaborative structure is unfolded through qualitative research approaches, taking into account video recordings, researchers' field notes, reflective pieces, and co-researching of team members' perspectives on the concept of "Science". This multi-layered analysis highlights the relevance of collaboration structures to contribute to transformative in-service primary science teacher education, based on valuing diverse voices, fostering organizational learning, paying attention to epistemic orientation. Findings reveal the impact of the teacher-researcher collaboration on individual and organizational levels as both observe and reflect upon each other's changes. For the example from Portugal, data sources include project reports, published papers, and reflective documentation from teachers involved in these initiatives. The research question guiding this work is: What collaborative structures and partnerships have been implemented and how do they support teacher professional development?. The analysis identifies several key components of collaboration between researchers and educators as Knowledge Co-Construction, Inquiry-Based Professional Learning, Metacognitive Development. The findings suggest that sustained collaboration between researchers and educators fosters not only pedagogical improvement but also a culture of professional inquiry and community building. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings Findings from these examples reveal that collaboration between researchers and teachers has a significant and sustained impact on individuals (e.g., teachers and researchers), educational organizations, and science education field as a whole. This contribution explores the role of collaboration amongst different stakeholders in shaping science education across multiple contexts, including school-university partnerships, communities of practice, and sustained collaborations, leading to a reflection on the role of collaboration itself on professional development, organizational learning, and pedagogical improvement. We want to offer recommendations for fostering collaborative structures in support of science education research and practice, underpinning key concepts such as communities of practice (Wenger, 1998/2005), distributed leadership (Woods et al., 2004), reflective practice (Schön, 1987), cogenerative dialogues (Tobin, 2006; Tobin & Roth, 2005), and equity of voices (Tobin, 2007). Through this participatory process (Bang & Vossoughi, 2016), we examine the bricolage (Kincheloe, 2001) of these two case studies to the importance of dialogue and trust-building in fostering transformative and long-term sustainable collaboration and partnership. Paper Research-Practice Partnership as Developmental Infrastructures for Teacher Learning and School Development 1: University of Haifa, Israel; 2: Ben Gurion University of the Negev, Israel Presenting Author:Research-practice partnerships (RPPs) have become increasingly prominent in educational research as sustained forms of collaboration intended to strengthen the relevance of research and support educational improvement through joint work between researchers and practitioners (Coburn et al., 2013). RPPs are commonly understood as arrangements that enable the co-construction of knowledge that is both theoretically grounded and locally relevant, while fostering ongoing engagement between research and practice communities (Penuel et al., 2015). While prior research has articulated key design principles of RPPs, including mutuality, long-term engagement, and joint knowledge production, there remains limited research on how RPPs can be evaluated in ways that capture their developmental, relational, and organizational contributions (Coburn & Penuel, 2016; Sarmiento-Marquez et al., 2023). Much existing research focuses on observable changes in practice or on the uptake of externally generated knowledge, rather than examining how participation in RPPs reshapes professional learning, and school cultures over time (Welsh, 2021). This paper contributes to current discussions on RPP by examining an RPP as a developmental context for teacher professional learning and school-level development. The research question is: In what ways does participation in a research-practice partnership contribute to teachers’ professional development and to the development of schools as learning organizations? This question responds to recent calls to explore RPPs not only in terms of outcomes, but also in relation to learning opportunities, professional agency, and developmental processes afforded through sustained collaboration (Coburn & Penuel, 2016; Sarmiento-Marquez et al., 2023). Accordingly, the paper evaluates the partnership itself as an infrastructure that enables inquiry and organizational learning through ongoing engagement in RPP (Farrell et al., 2021). The paper is grounded in three interrelated bodies of scholarship. First, the paper draws on literature on RPPs, which conceptualize RPPs as long-term, reciprocal arrangements oriented toward joint work, mutual learning, and capacity building rather than knowledge transfer (Coburn et al., 2013; Coburn & Penuel, 2016). From this perspective, partnerships are understood as infrastructures that shape professional learning conditions over time, and their value lies not only in measurable outcomes but also in the processes and conditions they create for learning. Second, the paper is informed by research on teacher professional learning and organizational learning in schools, which emphasizes that meaningful professional learning is situated in practice, socially mediated, and strengthened through sustained collaboration and inquiry (Borko, 2004; Darling-Hammond et al., 2017; Opfer & Pedder, 2011). This work highlights the importance of professional learning opportunities that are closely connected to teachers’ everyday work and that position teachers as active participants in their own learning. These features align closely with RPP design principles, suggesting that RPPs may function as particularly powerful contexts for teacher learning and collective capacity building within schools. Third, the paper draws on scholarship on teacher research and practitioner inquiry, which positions teachers’ systematic engagement in research as a form of professional learning that supports reflective practice, professional judgment, and the development of professional identity (Zeichner, 2003; Cheng & Li, 2020). This literature conceptualizes teachers as knowledge producers whose engagement in inquiry contributes not only to individual professional growth but also to collective learning and knowledge development within school communities. Together, these perspectives frame the partnership as a context in which professional development emerges through participation in research, collaboration, and inquiry, and in which school development can also be supported through these structures. Rather than assessing the effectiveness of a specific pedagogical intervention, the study evaluates the partnership itself as a developmental infrastructure that supports teacher professional learning and school-level development. In doing so, the paper contributes to Network 15 by offering a theoretically grounded approach to evaluating research-practice partnerships as professional learning contexts. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used The study employed a qualitative, exploratory design, aligning with calls to examine how partnerships function in practice and how participants experience their value (Coburn & Penuel, 2016; Farrell et al., 2021). Context and participants The research was conducted within one RPP involving two higher-education institutions and 21 schools, including primary, middle, secondary, and special education settings. Each school participated as a research school, engaging in school-based research into its own pedagogical practices. Teachers participated as co-researchers, and each school-based research process was supported by academic faculty. Participants included 25 teachers who acted as teacher-researchers and 14 school principals who were directly involved in the partnership. Approximately 40% of the teachers also held middle-management roles (e.g., pedagogical coordinators or subject leaders). The research took place after the second year of the partnership. Data collection and Analysis Multiple qualitative data sources were used to support triangulation (Merriam, 2002). 1. Semi-structured Interviews: In-depth interviews were conducted with 25 teachers and 14 principals. Interviews focused on participants’ motivations for joining the partnership, experiences of engagement in school-based research, perceived professional learning, and perceived effects of the partnership at both the individual and school levels. 2. Meeting Documentation: Documentation from school-based research meetings was collected throughout the partnership. This corpus included weekly meeting summaries from all 21 schools, written by the academic faculty members who supported each school’s research. The documentation comprised records of discussions, methodological decisions, emerging interpretations, research tasks, and next steps, as well as reflective summaries authored by faculty members based on their sustained engagement with the schools. 3. Reflective Summaries: At the end of the second year, three principals and two teachers submitted written reflections on the partnership process. These reflections focused on participants’ retrospective evaluations of the partnership, the research process, and perceived professional and organizational changes. Data were analyzed using inductive qualitative content analysis (Cho & Lee, 2014), following a systematic process of familiarization, open coding, category construction, refinement, and validation (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Coding focused on identifying patterns related to participants’ experiences of the partnership and its perceived professional and organizational contributions. Categories were developed through comparison across data sources (interviews, meeting documentation, and written reflections), allowing the analysis to move beyond individual accounts toward an evaluation of how the partnership functioned at the school and partnership levels. Peer debriefing with members of the broader research program supported analytic trustworthiness (Nowell et al., 2017). Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings The findings reveal three dimensions: Enhanced pedagogical practice. Participation in school-based research enhanced pedagogical practice by fostering systematic reflection, increasing awareness of instructional goals, and more consistent use of data-informed decision-making. Teachers reported that engagement in research prompted a shift from intuitive teaching toward evidence-based pedagogy. This sharpened pedagogical precision and supported stronger alignment between instructional practices and educational aims. Personal and professional growth and empowerment. The RPP acted as a powerful mechanism for teacher empowerment. Through collaborative research, teachers adopted an identity as knowledge producers rather than implementers of externally generated ideas. This shift was associated with increased professional confidence, self-fulfillment, and a renewed sense of intellectual purpose. Teachers described engagement in research as a professional turning point that strengthened ownership of pedagogical questions and confidence in using research to inform future development. A school culture of learning through research. At the organizational level, the RPP contributed to cultural transformation within schools. Schools evolved into professional learning communities characterized by a shared language of inquiry and collective engagement with evidence. Principals noted a shift toward a research-oriented school identity, in which organizational decision-making became increasingly data-driven. The findings highlight the limitations of RPP assessment approaches that focus primarily on predefined indicators or short-term effects (Welsh, 2021). Teachers and principals evaluated the partnership mainly through its processes, including sustained engagement in research, structured reflection, and collaborative knowledge production. This supports calls to conceptualize RPP evaluation as an examination of learning processes, relational dynamics, and organizational capacity building rather than as the measurement of isolated outcomes (Coburn & Penuel, 2016; Penuel et al., 2015). RPPs function as vital infrastructures for professional renewal. By positioning teachers as equal partners in the co-construction of knowledge, such partnerships support professional learning and organizational development that are both sustainable and deeply rooted in practitioners’ expertise. Paper Teacher Content Creation and Teacher–Researcher Partnerships: Finnish K–12 Teachers’ Expectations of Research Partnerships University of Jyväskylä, Finland Presenting Author:Teachers co‑designing with researchers offers a promising avenue for developing pedagogical content and integrating emerging technologies into everyday teaching. However, its effectiveness depends on understanding how research partnerships operate at the levels of agency, expertise, expectations, and perceived value. Although co‑design is often described as collaborative, research–practice partnership (RPP) literature shows that many initiatives remain researcher‑driven—researchers define the problems, set the timelines, and prioritise data‑collection needs. This raises questions about how teachers evaluate such partnerships, where they draw boundaries around their participation, and how they distinguish meaningful collaboration from additional burdens. This study examines teachers’ expectations and hesitations to work with researchers, focusing on what teachers hope to gain from collaboration and what aspects of classroom reality they feel researchers must understand when it comes to integrating digital innovations into teaching. RQ: What makes collaboration feel worthwhile or burdensome when researchers work with teachers to improve content creation and technology integration? This question foregrounds teachers’ criteria for meaningful participation and highlights the boundaries they draw between useful support and undue demands on their time and attention. Three theoretical perspectives guide this study. RPP theory explains why misalignment often exists, as partnerships tend to privilege researcher agendas despite participatory claims. It sensitises the analysis to issues of problem framing, agency, mutualism, and value production. Practice Architectures provides concepts for analysing how discourses, routines, material arrangements, and power relations shape what teachers find possible, acceptable, or overwhelming within partnership work. Boundary theory highlights how teachers and researchers negotiate expectations, expertise, and roles in co‑design activities, and how misunderstandings or productive crossings emerge. Together, these frameworks help explain why teachers may embrace certain collaborative practices while resisting others. This combination is particularly relevant in Finland, where teachers enjoy high professional autonomy, are trusted to design their own pedagogy, and expect practical relevance and intellectual respect from external partners. These conditions heighten teachers’ sensitivity to whether partnerships honour their expertise or introduce abstract, impractical, or researcher-driven demands that do not resonate with classroom realities. Finland serves as a high-autonomy European case from which broader insights can be drawn for other European education systems seeking to design equitable and teacher-valued RPPs. Methodology, Methods, Research Instruments or Sources Used This study adopts a qualitative research approach to uncover teachers’ views and lived experiences regarding how research projects can support their content creation and adoption of new emerging technologies such as AI. Because the research focuses on the experience and perspectives of teachers, a qualitative approach fits the requirement to engage with participants’ interpretations rather than measure or predict them. This approach assumes that teachers’ practices and beliefs are socially situated and shaped by their professional environments, institutional expectations, and personal pedagogical orientations. The data were generated in a workshop on teacher content creation and applying emerging technologies in everyday teaching practices. The research design combines multiple qualitative data sources to achieve both depth and triangulation. These include recorded semi-structured focus groups with teachers and reflective artefacts produced in the workshops and researcher observations. The focus groups functioned both as a reflective space for teachers and a site for collective knowledge-building, where participants exchanged experiences and concerns. The artefacts produced serve as situated traces of teachers’ design thinking and reveal how they create content and integrate technology in practice. Observational notes complement the focus group data by capturing contextual details, embodied reactions, and collaborative dynamics. To analyse the collected qualitative material, the study employs applied thematic analysis. This analytic approach is well‑suited for identifying, organizing, and interpreting patterns of meaning across heterogeneous data sources such as interview transcripts, artefact texts, and field notes. Applied thematic analysis provides a systematic yet flexible approach, allowing both inductive and deductive coding strategies while facilitating the disclosure of the researcher's process. Inductive coding is used to capture themes emerging directly from participants’ discussions and design processes and deductive coding draws on RPP sensitizing concepts related to teacher agency, technological adoption, and pedagogical design. The analytic process proceeded in stages: reading and familiarization, generating initial codes, developing candidate themes, reviewing themes across data sources, and refining theme descriptions. Triangulating insights from focus groups, artefacts, and observations strengthened the credibility and richness of the findings. Throughout the analysis, reflexive considerations on the researchers’ roles in the workshops and potential influence on participants are documented to enhance transparency and trustworthiness. Conclusions, Expected Outcomes or Findings This study contributes to ongoing dialogue about how research–practice collaborations can better reflect the education professional cultures in systems like Finland, where teachers enjoy high autonomy, and partnerships must align with teachers’ expectations rather than researcher‑driven priorities. The findings from this study will clarify the conditions under which teachers perceive research partnerships as genuinely desirable, including the types of activities, material support, co‑design processes, and concrete outputs (such as ready‑made templates, examples, and classroom‑tested materials) that matter in everyday practice. A key outcome of this work is to address a persistent challenge identified in the RPP literature: researchers often assume they understand teacher needs, while teachers articulate very different, more grounded expectations tied to workload, feasibility, and classroom realities. By examining teachers’ own definitions of usefulness, burden, and relevance, the study will outline recommendations for designing research activities, co‑design sessions, and material development processes that respond to teacher needs outward, rather than being structured around researcher motives inward. This includes guidance on how to design collaboration that is not merely non‑burdensome but meaningfully beneficial for teachers’ professional goals and workload management. The study extends understanding of how RPPs can support not only professional development but also concrete material development and integration of new technology into classrooms—an area of growing importance in European educational policy and practice. The findings will inform national and local educational actors about how well‑designed partnerships can strengthen teacher satisfaction, enhance technology integration, and clarify what teacher‑valued collaboration should look like in high‑autonomy systems.
